OLDER ADULTS
Holocaust Survivor Care Services
During the past two years, we have been able to help 96 Holocaust survivors in the area. We have provided information and referral, comprehensive case management, individually tailored psychological care as well as support for caregivers.
Our range of care has expanded dramatically by providing access to virtual senior centers, Uniper technology, expanding our Volunteer Friendly Visitor program and Pen Pal program. We have touched the lives of many who have needed our presence while maintaining the existing access to support for medical, legal, and financial assistance to those who qualify.
Continued Success Of Uniper Technology For Seniors
Mrs. Ahuva* is a 89 year old Holocaust survivor from Poland who lives in a senior housing community with 12 hours per day homecare since having a stroke a few years ago. The stroke impaired her speech severely affecting her ability to communicate on the phone and limiting our ability to safely provide much needed psychological care. Uniper has provided the means to implement a variety of interventions opening a window for non-verbal communication that eases understanding. As a result, she has learned skills to manage sleep problems and worry and the weekly sessions on Uniper have reduced depression. Her aide facilitates her access to various programs that provide engagement and entertainment. Even her Friendly Visitor volunteer, a retired speech pathologist, uses Uniper to connect with her weekly.

Transportation Services
Toyota Motor North America awarded a grant to JFS to transport seniors and people with disabilities to medical appointments and provide access to social services.
Limited finances, location, and disabilities often make it difficult for the elderly to access transportation services, contributing to a decline in quality of life. The program has helped clients meet their needs while improving isolation. They have rave reviews and report improved quality of life. Since we received the Handicap Accessible van in December 2021 our driver, Shelita Warner, has helped with approximately 75 rides per month.
