Whispers from the City of Flowers

Chief Editor Foreword

Dear readers, Greetings!! Welcome to the first issue of this year's newsletter titled "Whispers From The City Of Flowers" of JCI Quatre Bornes. First and foremost, I wish to thank the JCI Community, especially the authors, for their valuable cooperation in putting together this edition. I am also grateful to our incredibly talented editorial teammate Huzaifa Udhin for his creative input. The content of this newsletter is but a mere fragment of the thoughts of our fascinating minds - quite representative of this year's motto "Beautiful Minds Inspire Others". Indeed, the newly established board members are full of enthusiasm and I am honoured to publish their aspirations and their values. Words are less to describe their admirable efforts in the face of difficulties.

This periodical shall begin by a foreword from the leaders of the JCI Community followed by a message from our fellow board members. We will then feature the winning experience of our aspiring members who made us proud during the latest debate championship. The newsletter also describes the ensuing activities regarding the Gender Based Violence, Neighborhood Watch and Skills Development Training projects. I share the same vision as JCI; I sincerely hope to bring together motivated citizens and create resilient leaders.

Having said this, I suggest you let our articles whisper optimism in your hearts. Sudharshinee Goordoyal 2022 Chief Editor JCI Quatre Bornes

Message from 2022 JCI Mauritius National President In JCI, training, empowerment and connecting with past members and senators is vital for the success of an Organisation. It is only through these ways that the current generation can learn about its history and its culture. I will hereby encourage JCI Quatre Bornes to work as one united team and by amplifying their voice in order to be the organization that creates and brings sustainable impact. Dear Readers, It is with great honour and privilege to address you as the 2022 JCI Mauritius National President in this first issue of JCI Quatre Bornes newsletter. I would hereby like to thank Local President Ashfaaq Ochatoya and his Local Board Members for taking the challenge to lead the Local Organisation this year. As young leaders, we have - and will continue to have - a valuable role in the local and national response to community challenges. I would urge you to dream big but, at the same time, remember to start small. Transformation is not a big bang; like everything in nature, it’s a gradual process. There will be spikes, when you hit the threshold where something big happens but, you have to work from the ground up. Every tree starts off as a seedling – you have to take care of it and let it grow.

4

This year, JCI Quatre Bornes is working with the Mauritius Police Force in Gender-Based Violence initiatives whereby various activities are planned to be conducted. I would like to congratulate JCI Quatre Bornes for winning this year’s JCI Mauritius Debate Competition. On behalf of the national board, I would like to seize this opportunity to thank JCI Quatre Bornes for its continuous support and I look forward to their impactful projects and activities. Yours in JCI Spirit, Yudhish Narotumdass ROHEE 2022 JCI Mauritius National President

2022 JCI Quatre-Bornes Local Vice-President Introduction

Being the 2022 Local Vice President of JCI Quatres-Bornes is a big challenge for me and I hope it will be a memorable and enjoyable journey ahead. I have known and joined JCI in October 2020 and since then the journey has been fantastic so far. Being someone in the Telecommunication engineering, Educational and Research fields I will try to bring my expertise, experience, and devotion to the club. I will work out to fill the gaps in those areas and will try to bring on different realistic projects during this 2022 mandate together with my board. Also, my focus will be mainly on the different training that will be offered to the members and public by JCI Quatres-Bornes’ experts and trainers. Additionally , I will try to put

emphasis on environmental projects in our locality. Bonding ourselves with other social clubs and increasing our networking to carry on with more projects is another vision I have. I hope the 2022 local board members will bring out their best as much as they can for the club together with all the members and aspiring members of JCI QuatresBornes. Before ending, thanks a million JCI Quatres-Bornes members, for putting your trust in me. Muhammad Bin Abubakr JOOLFOO 2022 JCI Quatre Bornes Local VicePresident

Greetings everyone, My name is Veena Ramnauth, your 2022 Local Vice President. I currently work as an Analyst and I have joined JCI as an aspiring member during the Lockdown in March 2021. I started as the 2021 Chief Editor for JCI Quatre Bornes and this allowed me to know a lot about the Local Organisation. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to be designated as the Project director for the ongoing project on Creating Awareness on Gender Based Violence under the guidance of our 2021 National Treasurer, Vaishalee Beedasy.

Through this project, I had the privilege to be the contact person with the Mauritius Police Force and Family Protection Unit and that was a really great experience. I also learnt a lot of new things that will definitely help me be a better version of myself and I made a lot of new friends and acquaintances as well. So, for me, I made the right decision to join JCI and I look to put forward more trainings, workshops, self-development programmes and of course, outings. 1/1

2022 JCI Quatre-Bornes Local Secretary Introduction

Hello everyone, I am Shivangee Ramsamy. It is a pleasure for me to be featured again in the E-Newsletter of JCI Quatre-Bornes. I have the honour to be the 2022 JCI Quatre-Bornes Local Secretary. From being an aspiring member to a member and finally to a Local Secretary, the journey has been very fruitful. I joined JCI Quatre-Bornes in May 2019, became a member in December 2019 and became a Local Secretary in March 2022. I have attended trainings by JCI City-Plus, helped and attended work sessions with JCI Beau-Bassin/ Rose-Hill and even participated in a joint project with JCI Curepipe.

I have always wanted to help others and JCI has given me the opportunity to do so. Last year I even participated in the JCI Mauritius Debate Competition, and I assure you all that the experience I have received is worth it. This year we have our Gender-Based Violence project and the clothes donation in collaboration with JCI Curepipe. We are also going to keep a few surprises for later. Yours, Shivangee Ramsamy 2022 JCI Quatre-Bornes Local Secretary

Dear readers, my sincere greetings! Being elected as local Treasurer 2022, it is with great honour and privilege for me to express my gratitude towards the members of JCI Quatre-Bornes To maintain determination at the top, we must not forget to unite members by making them organise and participate in various activities including workshops and training. This will help them to develop along with the aspiring members and other members within the organisation, so that they reach their best abilities.

The clothes donation is one of the SDG related initiatives of JCI Quatre Bornes in close collaboration with JCI Curepipe. We have decided to collect clothes which will be redistributed to the identified needy people by the committee in close collaboration with the Mauritius Police Force. In the end, I would like to thank the Editorial Team who has put all their efforts into making the First Edition of the Newsletter of 2022 a success. The Winning Team 2022 JCI Mauritius Debate Championship Aspiring Members Experience (By Keshav and Rovena) The happiness which dawned upon us after winning the 2022 JCI Mauritius Debate Championship was superlative than even finding money in our pockets. Maybe as we drank our nth cup of tea through the long night of relentless preparation on the eve, the tea leaves that lined the side predicted that the sincere hard work of the team, and exhilarating willpower of the aspiring members to hoist the flag at home will be recompensed. It is said that we should always start off on the right foot - it may be we eventually unconsciously did so, since as we freshly joined the team of JCI Quatre Bornes, the quirk of fate assigned us with the opportunity to participate in the 2022 JCI Mauritius Debate Championship. The welcome and support we received from the JCI Quatre Bornes were as warm and encouraging. As perplexed, we found ourselves to be, given we were new and mostly unaware of the competition, we made it our mission, our responsibility to put our best foot forward so we can have the name of JCI Quatre Bornes soar again. We had innerly set our minds for the win and decided that irrespective of the circumstances on the D-day, we shall be brave in the attempt.

At Honoris Educational Network, though not previously acquainted, after few introductions, we got along, and felt much at ease with the rest of the members of JCI Mauritius. The atmosphere was convivial, from the judges, the fantastic organisers to the contestants. The competition was professionally organised and wellstructured. Given the absence of certain teams, though going to the finals directly was a mere toss of coin game, the stress and pressure remained inevitably high. While watching the 1st round added a few zests to our confidence and understanding of the competition, we had an opponent - JCI Curepipe, which stood strong and tall against us. We knew time had been the biggest constraint in our preparation, and as the chit 'Are private schools better than public schools?' came out for the final schools, we were somewhat ambivalent given we had more pros than cons, and we were assigned the opposites.

The Winning Team 2022 JCI Mauritius Debate Championship Aspiring Members Experience (By Keshav and Rovena) Yet, we made best of the findings and spontaneous facts we had at our disposal, and we affirmed our ideas confidently on stage, with each one of us, asserting and delivering our best in our roles as team leader, crossexaminer (Special mention to our friend, Muhammad Joolfoo for having introduced us to this platform) and 'refutter'. Post the debate, we moved sceptically through the buzz in the room, and as the Senator delivered the win in our favour - it was at time a relief and a bliss which knew no bounds. Cherry on the top - our team leader, Keshav Porahoo won the Best Speaker title - indeed his performance had been impactful. Capturing words from the best speaker himself:

12

"My forte in public speaking enabled me to deliver my best as team leader and bring solid arguments. Needless, as we say, there is always room for improvement. Fairly satisfied with my performance, I was not expecting to win Best Speaker, a true highlight of the day for my team members and myself. I eventually took with me that day, not only trophies but the secret to being a best speaker, which is, confidence and pertinent arguments". Today, as we embark on this journey with JCI Quatre Bornes, we gather that teamwork lead us for the win, and all alike, unalike ideas - we intend to go on stronger.

Aspiring Members Introduction

Rovena Choytah

Truth be told, I always found it to introduce the crowd rather than myself. So, she is named Rovena Choytah who would adopt along with the pace of nature, the succulents themselves; who would tap her feet and dance tirelessly to compensate for a sedentary week; who would have loved to craft stories, bake cookies, and sell candles when she is not pulling off long hours at work, an auditor by profession, in a not so ergonomic posture. Over the years, she has been able to undust the layers of low self-esteem, hesitation, and shyness to embrace not only the academics, but the extracurricular where she got various opportunities to be the leader, negotiator, presenter, researcher, critic, thinker, challenger, innovator or a mere member - yet all contributing to gain public speaking,

writing, decision-making and analytical skills. Through and beyond the box-like screen, she has eventually learnt what the world looks like - woes and wars, all living for the little things - and world issues like equality, human rights, ecosystem, gender-based violence, war-afflicted countries, refugees & asylum seekers, women, empowerment, marginalisation and uncountable more keep her hooked up, plus has grown her empathy to contribute towards the collective good as much as she can. She utterly believes that being an aspiring member of JCI Quatre Bornes is a door open to working in a team and in cohesion towards putting in action ideas/projects for and with the society at large. She aims to concretely add to the journey of marvellous and well-led projects by JCI Quatre Bornes.

Aspiring Members Introduction

Keshav porahoo

Greetings, Brought up in a modest family, where education has been highly valued as the mighty armour for a better life, I have as well at all times sought to incorporate extracurricular activities which enabled me today to inculcate no less than the panoply of skills of a ringmaster and a performer. In this light, my family has always been my ultimate backbone. Living up to their dream, I am today a graduate of Engineering and IT from the University of Mauritius. I am currently working in one of the sectors that has probably grown and sometimes outgrown to co-exist with human-the technology sector.

14

An extrovert at heart, in speech and in action since primary days, this led me to thrive and excel in my participations in non-academic activities such as Model United Nations, Drama, Public Speaking and Debates amongst others. I, also, still hold memorably to the moment where I was elected ‘Tete de liste’ and appointed as Vice President for the University Students’ Union elections (2018-2019). All inclusive, gave me opportunities to be an artist where I have been able to set up a stage, direct a performance, bring alive projects for the larger good and simultaneously manage the backstage.

Aspiring Members Introduction

Amidst all, I vehemently believe in my culture and tradition, as I hold the land of my ancestors as well - India, close to my heart. Being an Overseas Citizen of India, I have gladly represented Mauritius in India in 2019 through the Indian Embassy. Similarly, I take utter pride in speaking Hindi/Bhojpuri as one of the mother tongue languages and was ranked first worldwide in Hindi for the HSC exams. Rolling my sleeves up, I intend to engage with JCI Quatre Bornes, with much determination and willingness to bring about constant changes in the society. For every small action count, I trust that our collective dedication backed by our individualistic efforts will help build a better world.

Let it be the first time to speak what we feared of, Let it be the first time to write what we are denied of, Let it be the first time to share the goodwill we all dream of, For everything has a first time.

The Magical Christmas Smile

Christmas isn't a season, it is a feeling; a truly magical feel. Irrespective of age, we all love to be pampered on this day. It is a time to reunite with family and have a meal together. The pandemic situation hasn't made it easy for some. Yet, JCI Quatre Bornes, under the kind leadership of Ms Veena Ramnauth, brought smiles to the faces of children and women at Passerelle Women Centre, Quatre Bornes and at the L'Oiseau du Paradis Shelter, Cap Malheureux on 26 December.

I am thankful to all donors and the organising committee (Immediate Past National President Philip, 2021 National Treasurer Vaishalee, 2022 National Vice President Trishya, 2022 JCI Quatre Bornes Local Vice President Veena, 2022 JCI Quatre Bornes Local Secretary Shivangee, 2022 JCI Quatre Bornes Local Treasurer Sanjanah and Aspiring Member Sandyl) for their valuable assistance. As Mother Theresa rightly said "It's not how much we give but how much love we put into giving." Sudharshinee Goordoyal

An online donation campaign was launched a week prior to the 25th of December with the intention to provide a Kid's Happy Meal to each child of Passerelle Women Centre. Our fellow Jaycees and donors were very generous and the team collected enough funds to sponsor children at L'Oiseau du Paradis Shelter as well. In addition to food, toys were gifted to both shelters. Given the regulations and the risks involved due to the pandemic situation, our team couldn't spend much time with the children. However, it was still a pleasure to behold the beauty of thrilled children enjoying their gifts. Watching from afar, in a way, we were similar to Santa Claus although dressed in Burgundy polo shirts inscribed with JCI.

Neighbourhood Watch

JCI Quatre Bornes and JCI Mauritius met with the Child Protection Unit (CPU) and the Family Protection Unit (FPU) on the 22nd January 2022 to discuss ways the JCI Community can help the Mauritius Police Force in combating Gender Based Violence (GBV). One among the proposed solutions was to incorporate the Neighbourhood Watch project with the GBV project. Hence, JCI Quatre Bornes and JCI Mauritius are collaborating together to address this problem in the society. Since Neighborhood Watch is existing in some regions and can be implemented everywhere, this can be used as a referral pathway and mechanism for the reporting of domestic violence, child abuse, and GBV cases amongst other problems in the society. We have hence embarked on raising awareness in the community through sensitization programmes from the CPU while implementing neighborhood watch to highlight the importance of denouncing GBV.

18

Our pilot session was first started at La Source, Seeneevassen Ave, Quatre Bornes, where we had the support of the local PPS, Honorable Marie Alexandra Tania Diolle. This initiative was favorably welcomed by the people of the locality. Additionally, we have more insights for the project GBV in the pipeline. Please keep following us for more updates on our social media page for future projects. I firmly believe that with our new members, we have the capacity to take this project to new heights. Thank you Veena RAMNAUTH Project Director Gender Based Violence Project

Short informational & awareness videos on Gender based violence Last year a solid team of JCI Quatre Bornes embarked on a project regarding Gender Empowerment which aimed to tackle issues of gender based violence. Multiple training and webinars were held as part of a sensitisation campaign. As confidently said and believed by our collaborators, the Family Protection Unit and Clinical Psychologists, education of our citizens is the key to solving this societal concern. The effort put into this project should be a continuous one, not just a single attempt. Hence, our team have made clippings of the previous webinar sessions and published the same on the Facebook Page of JCI Quatre Bornes. Gradually but surely, we hope our videos will have an impact on its viewers. We kindly request you, dear reader, to watch and share these videos to your surroundings on WhatsApp, on Facebook and other Social Media platforms. As we move forward to collectively find solutions, I wish to encourage you to share your views with us. We would be grateful for your contribution to our project, afterall you are also a member of this society. As it is always asserted on this matter, being a mute spectator also makes you part of the problem. It's time for a change; seize the opportunity, fellow reader, to finally be part of the solution.

Meet and Greet

On 28 January, JCI Quatre Bornes began the year by building stronger bonds. Wisdom comes by sharing experiences with each other; with this aim the "Jaycee Freshers", as I'd like to put it, took the initiative to organise a meet and greet. The event was held at Eighty Eight Restaurant, Bagatelle. Senator Kiran Bhujun responded positively to the invitation and we appreciate his effort and time to meet with the newest members of JCI Quatre Bornes. His advice throughout the evening motivated all those present and strengthened their enthusiasm to lead and view things with an improved perspective. Indeed, it was a joyous opportunity for all of us to share how JCI made us happy in varying ways and most importantly what JCI meant to us. Being a newbie in this organisation I was reluctant, at first, and rather unsure what was awaiting in terms of responsibilities as a recently sworn in member. The informal setup on that day created an ambience that was highly conducive to promoting an enlightening discussion. As I vividly recall, Senator Kiran described how he found his passion for photography through this organisation. We would like to share with you dear readers, and hopefully prospective JCI members,

20

that a testimonial video by Senator Kiran, was published on the JCI Quatre Bornes Facebook Page. I urge you to watch the video. The JCI Quatre Bornes family intends to grow bigger and better and leave an impactful legacy too. With this intention the members are earnestly looking forward to more such insightful Meet & Greet events. Sudharshinee Goordoyal
