Even though the COVID-19 pandemic is compelling us to adapt to the new normal life, the final quarter of 2021 has been eventful. Our National flagship project 2021 National Debate Championship has been a success. Clothes Donation and Gender Based Violence projects have kept our members active. I seized this opportunity to thank all members and project directors who came forward to live up the challenge. As the saying of Morgan Freeman goes:

to all our Senators for their precious advice. On an ending note, I congratulate the editing team for the amazing job done. Message from 2021 JCI Mauritius National President

Dear JCI Quatre Bornes Local Board Members, Dear Members , Senators and Aspiring members, Greetings and I trust this email finds you well. It has not been an easy year for all of us. I believe that a leadership role is like a game of poker and it all comes down to what we do with the hands that we are given.

I would like to congratulate JCI Quatre Bornes for successfully hosting the 2021 JCI Mauritius Debate Championship despite all the last minute challenges. The only challenge remaining now is the Debate Championship and I would really like to see this project through.

The organization has known a lot of challenges this year, but it is not a reason to be discouraged, every organization knows a lifecycle and it that little moment after the decline where the curve shifts upwards is where the magic begins, but this magic can only be accomplished through hard work, determination and teamspirit.

Important highlights I have observed is the project related to Gender Based violence in collaboration with the Mauritius Police Force. It creates a sense of satisfaction to see how the members are working passionately to make this vision reality and this project has a huge potential in terms of impact if you are able to see beyond your current capabilities. I firmly believe that the new generation of members will create an even greater impact with the right mindset and we will see JCI Quatre Bornes will Rise again.

With their help, I gathered a team o f w o n d e r f u l p e o p l e w h o w e re eager to work. We set up a 2021 Debate Championship Board. We held regular meetings to prepare for the training and the Championship. I would like to highlight that the advice from the past project director has been instrumental. Those meetings w e re f r u i t f u l a n d g u i d e d u s i n realising each step of the project. After several negotiations with Mr Ravin Papiah. He accepted to be the trainer and the judge for the competition. On the day of training, I was very surprised by the great attendance. The training was very instructive and interactive. The participants had the opportunity to seek advice and got a better insight about the competition itself. I will seize this opportunity to thank all the participants and Mr Ravin Papiah for making this

JCITITLE Rythm

Dear Readers, I am Sanjanah Pareemamun and I am the Local Vice President for the year 2021. This year we have 2 main projects concerning JCI RISE: J C I RY T H M - R a i s e Yo u r s e l f t o Help Mankind is collaboration between JCI Curepipe and JCI Quatre-Bornes. A donation drive has been initiated whereby we collected clothes to help the needy people. These will be distributed with the advice of the Mauritius Police Force who will enable us to reach genuine cases. Our SDGs 1 is contributing to upcycling, ensuring a clutter free home in line with SDG 2 ar (Responsible consumption and production) and most importantly helping those in need in line with SDG 1 (No poverty). We also came to this initiative by changing the mindset of people not to throw their clothes away and give their clothes that can be used by the other people who really need it. Moreover, upcycling of clothing helps the environment in a similar way as recycling bottles, paper and cans does. It is important to emphasize protecting

the environment, and making clothing donations are a great step to take for any person of any age. For example, the polyester fiber production process puts a strain on the environment.

Furthermore, it can keep your h o u s e o rg a n i s e d b y d o n a t i n g . Homes get messy, especially as y o u s p e n d m o re t i m e i n t h e m . Donating clothes and other home goods ensures that you’re keeping y o u r h o m e c l u t t e r- f re e . R a t h e r than having all those clothes in your closet that you never wear, donating gets rid of them and gives your home the space it needs to breathe!

It can also aid those in need. One of the most important reasons to donate clothes is how many people it helps. It helps those who can’t afford expensive clothes. On this ending note, I would like to thank the Editorial Team who have put so much effort into making it a success. I am also grateful to all team members of JCI who have inspired me and encouraged me to seize more opportunities.

Webminar on Gender TITLE Based Violence

Women's day... Men's day... Pride month... The whole spectrum of genders is celebrated every year on March 8, November 19 and June 28. Yet behind the celebration also lies the darkness due to violence. A woman paining from physical violence, a man suffering from emotional distress, a member of the LGBTQ community being denied basic rights... We have discussed it all during the webinar held on Saturday, 28 August 2021. It was an enlightening session with representatives from Mauritius Police Force ( MPF) , more precisely the Family Protection Unit (FPU) along with the clinical psychologist Ms Sharuna Doyal. We also had the kind participation of Honourable Tania Diolle during the event. The session was carried out in an interview style where the project director, Ms Veena Ramnauth and 3 members of the organising committee would take turns to dedicate a question to the panellists.

This structure allowed to define the terms from the Gender Based Violence lexicon before digging deeper into how violence is manifested. The panellists emphasized how GBV is a continuum of violence in the society and how cases have significantly increased in severity, number and types. Not all forms of GBV is visible, some are subtle yet damaging and long lastingly painful manipulation and verbal abuse for instance. As highlighted by participants, the phrase “moi ki mari”, vividly depicts the euphemistic language and the tendency to make jokes on the topic tends to undermine the seriousness of domestic abuse.

It aggravates the taboo surrounding GBV. The panellists are striving to improve the situation through awareness campaigns, such as this webinar, by demystifying the causes of crimes against genders as well the various misconceptions and misperceptions which result in victim blaming in a still patriarchal society.

effort along with a good strategy is needed to reach maximum people so that victims can overpower the fear to speak out and all citizens can fight against gender based violence.

The violentometer, a tool widely used by professionals in the field, highlights the strata of gender violence and how a behaviour can be associated to each level. Hotlines, workforce, and infrastructural facilities are being made available to victims. The session was enriching in terms of knowledge and it was concluded by agreeing that a collective

In spite of tremendous progress towards including gender equality as a global goal, a lot of work remains to be done to achieve this g o a l . U n e q u a l p o w e r re l a t i o n s create the conditions for genderbased violence to occur, and it can be perpetrated or condoned by relatives, community members, or government actors. Gender Based Violence does not only mean violence towards women or domestic violence but also includes verbal abuse, psychological manipulation and much more! And it concerns ALL of us. During the last 2 lockdown periods, there has been a sharp increase in cases relating to G e n d e r- B a s e d V i o l e n c e o n

M a u r i t i u s a n d w i t h i n c re a s i n g brutality towards the victims. JCI Quatre Bornes has thus embarked on the project "Nu Pa Per, Nu Pa Pu Ress Trankil" to address this issue by creating awareness on Gender-Based Violence. In this context, JCI Quatre Bornes in collaboration with the Police Family Protection unit organized a training session entitled, Help Us Help Them which was held at Flying Dodo on the 6th November 2021. The session was an informative one aiming to create awareness on Gender Based Violence. We had among us Mrs Ramdour – Woman Police Chief Inspector, Mrs Rajeshrie JAUNKY – Woman Police Chief Inspector and Mrs Sundhya GOORBIN Women Police
