Whispers from the City of Flowers

Chief Editor Message

Dear Readers, Greetings! It is with great pleasure that I am presenting to you the second edition of this year's newsletter. On behalf of the JCI Quatre Bornes's editorial team, I warmly welcome you to the readership of our newsletter. As Editor in Chief, I wish to thank all authors and reviewers who have been cooperative and supportive in building this edition. There have been quite a few unintended and unforeseen obstacles in the past few weeks, however with the kind guidance and motivational words of our dear 2022 National President Yudhish Rohee we have learnt our lessons and emerged into better versions of ourselves. This edition contains a review of all the projects conducted by JCI Quatre Bornes in the second quarter of 2022. The two large scale projects carried out have been the Advocacy for Disabled people, which received nationwide coverage, and the Vice President Richard Ojo's Banquet Dinner. The local organisation also focused on personal intellectual development of the youth through short training on financial literacy and time management among others.

I am glad to see that slowly but surely the local organisation is moving forward with multiple other projects, with the generous guidance of the National Board and other Local Organisations. The acts of support indeed highlights and honours the acclaimed "Brotherhood of JCI". Keeping this in mind, I wish you a good reading ahead, Sudharshinee Goordoyal 2022 Chief Editor JCI Quatre Bornes

Message from 2022 JCI Mauritius National President On behalf of JCI Mauritius, I would like to congratulate JCI Quatre Bornes for successfully hosting the 2022 JCI Vice President Richard Ojo banquet in the month of May. It was great to see the organisation coming together to organise the event under the leadership of the project director Sudharshinee Goordoyal.

Dear Readers, It is with utmost privilege and honour that I am addressing you as the 2022 JCI Mauritius National President in this second edition of JCI Quatre Bornes newsletter of this year. We are already half a year into our ‘one year to lead’, six months to go and soon we shall be working on the succession plan to prepare for next year. It is very positive to note the progressive growth of JCI Quatre Bornes this year. The Local Organsiation has been active in terms of various initiatives and projects over the past 6 months such as awareness session with the Mauritius Police Force, working on genderbased violence project and ‘unleash your inner power workshop’. The Local Organisation also organised various training to empower the members such as personal branding, mind mapping and financial literacy.

4

During the month of June, the 2022 JCI Africa and Middle East Conference was organised in Hammamet, Tunisia and it is with a pleasure to announce that 2006 JCI Quatre Bornes Local President and 2016 JCI Vice President, Senator Ryad was elected as the President of the JCI Africa and Middle East Senate Association. It is indeed wonderful to see the achievements of the past members of JCI Quatre Bornes. Message from 2022 JCI Quatre Bornes Local President I wish to also thank all Aspiring Members, Members, and Senators for their presence, hard work, consistency, interactions and feedback.

Dear JCI members,

members

and

aspiring

It's already time for our second e-newsletter; it's been an incredible year filled with challenges and learning opportunities. As Paul Cezzane said, "Time and reflection change the sight little by little until we come to understand." This is indeed a good time to pause and reflect on what we have accomplished as a group. Only then can we work on bettering our skills and overcoming our weaknesses.

We had a lot of training and ongoing projects over the last few months, which has been great. Keeping the same pace and dynamism, we still have to achieve our goals. I am confident that the unity we have within the team will help us in meeting the goals outlined in our Action Plan. Let us renew our commitment and energy for this year's second half. Finally, I would like to thank the hardworking team who made this e-newsletter a reality, especially our Chief Editor Sudharshinee and designer Huzaifa. Wishing you a Happy reading! Ashfaaq Ochatoya 2022 JCI Quatre Bornes Local President

Throughout the numerous challenges faced, my local board has always provided great support. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the 2022 Local Board; this journey would not have been possible without 2022 Local Secretary Shivangee, 2022 Local Treasurer Sanjanah, 2022 Local Vice Presidents Muhammad, and Veena.

Time management training

Personal Development is one of the main pillars on which JCI Quatres-Bornes puts emphasis. In this line, a training on Time Management was carried out along with many other trainings. Time Management is an important art of efficiently and intelligently using our time to accomplish all daily tasks and complete them in a systematic manner. The training was carried out on Saturday 9 April at the JCI Mauritius Secretariat. Our trainer was Dr Ismael Issackjee and our project director for this training was 2022 Local Vice president Muhammad Joolfoo. The witty trainer made sure to adopt an interactive approach to make the audience grasp the various factors

involved when planning our routine schedules. He also highlighted how it is important to focus on minimizing bad habits and optimizing on good ones. One of the tips that I found very helpful was to listen to podcasts while commuting when stuck in traffic. I have since then made sure to make good use of many more such tips; I hope other attendees have done the same. After the training was concluded an E-certificate was provided for those who successfully followed the training. Muhammad Joolfoo Project director

Financial literacy workshop

On 25th May 2022, JCI Quatre Bornes in collaboration with FinClub, a Peer to Peer Platform, organised a financial workshop. Mr Gavesh Deonanand, a Financial analyst, coached the audience on peer to peer lending. The purpose of FinClub is to connect creditworthy Borrowers seeking competitive personal loans with Lenders looking to fund the loans and earn higher returns on their investments. As a new financial firm, the company was looking for ways to promote their product while also educating people on investments. The most interesting aspect of this project is that it allows for easy investment via an internet platform. Launched in September 2021, the FinClub has already attracted over 50,000 visitors and received 1,000+ loan applications. With 100+ individual investors forming the Lender Community on the platform, more people are seeing it as an attractive alternative investment, particularly when compared to the low returns available elsewhere (i.e. 0.30 to 1.00% p.a. Savings rate). Historical returns are as high as 12.05% p.a. Their vision is to financially empower the underserved population and to make investment more accessible.

12

In this financial workshop, we have discussed how the direct lending allows certified lenders to charge higher interest rates and provide competitive loans to borrowers. To conclude, I want to thank all my board members for their support and dedication and special thanks to the chief editor. Last but not least, I would like to thank 2022 Local President Ashfaaq Ochatoya for his unwavering support for this project. Sanjanah Pareemamun Project director

His Excellency the Lord Mayor, Mr Mahfooz Moussa Cadersaib was the chief guest for this workshop, and he made an appeal to the young participants in this workshop to support EDYCS in this endeavour. Unleash your Inner Power workshop

On 11th June 1022, JCI Quatre Bornes hosted the “Unleash your Inner Power” workshop at the JCI Secretariat. We had Mr Jameel Rahemtoolah and Mr Arshaad Abdool who are both certified coaches and leadership trainers. We learnt about how to tap into the power of your brain so that you can actualize your full potential. We were introduced to the NLP as a model of how you use the power of your mind effectively, access a powerful state, use the power of languages and how you can overcome the excuses that hold you back from achieving your dream.

The workshop was very enriching and powerful for the participants who all had a very positive response to it. As project director, I would like to thank them for their participation and also to the speakers who came and gave us this wonderful workshop. Huzaifa Udhin Project director

VP Richard Ojo's Visit

The visit of the Vice President of JCI is a major annual event for the organisation. All Jaycees look forward to learning and sharing their experiences with the VP. Due to Covid restrictions, last year the visit was held online. Finally, in 2022, the Vice President Richard Ojo announced that he would be visiting Mauritius. The National Board immediately started planning his visit. The most important event during his visit is a banquet dinner organised in his honour. JCI Quatre Bornes was entrusted with the responsibility to plan the event. Project Director Sudharshinee along with the National and Local Board members began the arrangements, as soon as they were delegated this task, about two weeks prior to the VP's arrival in the country. On the D-day, 28 May at 7pm, at Labourdonnais Hotel, the first item of the agenda started: the Member's Forum presented by the Vice President Richard Ojo. It was a fun and interactive session where VP Ojo briefed the audience on the importance of the brotherhood within JCI and the elementary values of the organisation. He also focused on how every JCI cluster can achieve the targets.

Local Presidents had the opportunity to present a brief report of all their major projects with JCI Rise projects being the key topic of their presentation. Newest JCI members were also sworn in with the Vice President Richard Ojo and 2022 National President Yudhish Rohee doing the honours. Later the Project Director Sudharshinee, 2022 National President and Vice President Richard delivered their message to the audience. All attendees had the chance to network among each other and with the Vice President during the multiple breaks during the event. The banquet was finally concluded with a grand photoshoot. As Project Director I want to thank each and every person involved during the organisational phase. I am grateful that the 2022 National President, Yudhish trusted JCI Quatre Bornes with the banquet. Coya Muhammad Zahiir Feizal

Growing up, I always felt this world too wide for my frail shoulders, and this is the reason I couldn’t find for myself a safer harbor than JCI Quatre Bornes. So before my time vanished into thin air, I took the leap of faith and engaged as an aspiring member, trying to bring some hope to a world in desperate need of it.

To quote the famous Welsh poet, Dylan Thomas, “do not go gentle into that good night” and let me avow that this is what I intend to do. Honored, proud and delighted, those were the feelings that stir my heart and soul in just thinking of the marvelous adventures that await ahead.

solutions. An amazing person, who inspires not only me but also millions of people around the world, once said: “None of you will believe until you love for your brother what you love for yourself." We all want ease in our everyday life but we must not forget those in difficulties. It is our duty to help them. We have to stop focusing on problems but rather concentrate on solutions. I am sure that with JCI, I will be able to contribute to amazing projects for today’s generation.
