Let's hear from the 2021 JCI Mauritius National President Philip Chang-Ko

Dear 2021 JCI Quatre Bornes Local President Mariot Betombo, Dear 2021 JCI Quatre Bornes Local Board Members, Dear Members,Senators and Aspiring Members, Greetings and I hope you are all doing well during this confinement. We have all seen some drastic changes take place during the month of March, one week we were all living normally and in a flash we have seen everything turn upside down and our plan of action having the need to go through some drastic changes. One moment every meeting was physical and now we are completely virtual. But we shall do what we do best; which is to adapt to every situation that is thrown onto us JCI Quatre Bornes has some immense challenges this year, such as hosting the 2021 JCI Mauritius Public Speaking Championship as well as the 2021 JCI Mauritius Debate Championship. These two projects have gradually fallen in the past years and it is the objective this year to restore the honour of these

two flagship events and make them shine once again. As an organisation you should not hesitate to tap into the resources of your organisation, because let us not forget that JCI Quatre Bornes has produced two international officers in the past who, one is specialised in trainings and one with a strong

focus in the JCI Active Citizen Framework. As an organisation you need to learn to leverage on the skills of your members; past and present to be able lay the foundations for the future. I try my best to observe the effort every member is putting in the different initiative across JCI Mauritius and I would like to salute the efforts of JCI Quatre Bornes for

being quick also to respond to the Covid 19 pandemic and being part of the Covid Response Committee and whenever possible giving a helping hand across the different committees, hosting activities for independence day and participating in the activities of other local organisations to reinforce the brotherhood. I know the struggles of coping with limited resources, and for that, I say Thank you. I believe that JCI Quatre Bornes has a huge potential, and we should never underestimate the power of the youth when they unite towards a common goal. I have heard the different projects that JCI Quatre Bornes has in the pipeline(Community wise) and I believe in the potential of the organisation to see this through by 31st December 2021. Make it your purpose to become relevant in your respective town and begin creating even greater impact once again, because everyone believes in your local organisation and everyone knows that you are capable of much more. The team may be small, but being small is also a strength because it allows flexibility and the members have heart, and for me that is the best drive to help push the team

Message from our 2021 JCI Quatre Bornes Local President Mariot Betombo.

Dear readers, It is with great pleasure that I am conveying my first message as Local President. I am very grateful for the opportunity to serve as the Local President of JCI Quatre Bornes and I hope that we will create a bigger change this year and contribute more positively to our community. JCI Quatre Bornes is a strong chapter with a rich history over its thirty-three years of existence. Our senators and past members built a strong foundation for our chapter and gave us great opportunities to create positive changes. The 2021 action plan focuses on JCI RISE projects to enable us to adapt in a post-COVID-19 situation. As you know, JCI RISE is an initiative that encourages members to develop projects related to the three pillars of RISE: sustaining economies, motivating the workforce, and preserving mental health. We started a project called local app business in 2020 to help small businesses to have more visibility and help them overcome the economic crisis due to covid-19 and confinement. We will continue with

this project and gather more information to make it more relevant to the end users. Secondly, we will continue to collaborate with our partners to address the topic of Mental Health. The lockdown has been a particularly stressful time and the second wave came as a hard blow to the entire nation. Showing support and having open discussions relating to mental health sessions can help us and the people in our community to cope with loneliness and other stress relating to the pandemic. However, we cannot complete these projects without our members who are the heart of our organisation. We have started our recruitment campaign in order to gather more like-minded members to make

progress in our action plan and in the JCI Mission. The confinement made us shift priorities and it was a hard blow for us to return to this situation where the population is under lockdown. Many challenges were noted, the main ones being lack of food supply, the economic crisis, and people suffering from the stress and threat of the COVID-19.

To conclude, I want to thank the 2021 local board members and our members for the great work and dedication. And special thanks to the chief editor Veena Ramnauth and her editorial team for their great job. Mariot Betombo 2021 Local President JCI Quatre Bornes

This year, JCI Mauritius decided to create the Covid-19 Emergency Response Committee which is coordinated by National Board in order to unite all our efforts to address this critical situation and make a greater impact. Our work is spread across the various teams namely the Donation, Business, Mental Health, JCI Mauritius Show and the Marketing Team. It is encouraging and inspiring to see how a pandemic situation brings us together as one. Yes, the Covid-19 pandemic is a big challenge and no one wants it to happen again. But the positive part that we have learned this year is that it brings us together and make us more prepared and skilled to handle this kind of situation.

Dear Readers, Welcome to the first edition of the Whispers from the City of Flowers. I hope that you and your families are all safe and in good health. I am delighted to share a few words with you all as Immediate Past President of JCI Quatre Bornes. 2020 has been a memorable year and was full of valuable lessons. The least that we can say is that it left us better prepared to deal with this second wave of the COVID-19. The action plan for 2021 was geared towards the recovery of our local organisation in a post COVID-19 outbreak. Recruitment is a big priority so that our local organisation can carry out projects that are impactful for those suffering from the various consequences of the pandemic. Though the second wave of the disease took us all by surprise I am very h a p p y to see that our members have not been discouraged by the lockdown and continued with their respective projects. The board members have been properly equipped with

amazing training sessions during the LOM/NOM training to deliver on their assigned tasks this year. Our national flagship projects are progressing despite of the lockdown and we hope that all the participants will have an enriching experience from those training sessions. Thanks to the COVID-19 Emergency Response Committee, many projects have been launched to address the numerous challenges following the lockdown. It is a pleasure to see the JCI Mauritius family come as one during this difficult period. It is even more inspiring to witness the determination of the various committee members to overcome the obstacles to reach their goals. I hope that this passion for action becomes contagious and keeps on motivating us throughout the year. I wish you all to stay safe and in good health. Introducing the 2021 JCI TITLE Quatre Bornes Local Board

Dear Readers,

Dear Readers,

I am BETOMBO Mariot, 2021 JCI Quatre Bornes Local President. I am an Engineer and I joined JCI in June 2019. My first project as an aspiring member was to organise a photography training session. In 2020, I took on the challenge by being a local Vice President. I participated in a big project called Local App Business which would help small businesses to get more visibility. What I like the most about JCI is the bond that we share. It helps me to overcome my shyness and to have more confidence. I am what you called a geek. I enjoy sciences, computers and I particularly love coding, playing games and reading books too.

I, Ashfaaq Ochatoya, present you a small extract on myself. I am currently the Local Secretary of JCI Quatre Bornes for 2021 It is with utmost pleasure that I joined JCI back in 2019 and I swore in as a member in August 2020. Since then it has been an adventure. I was involved in several projects. ‘Developing your Leadership in Collaboration with Innsotra’ has been my stepping stone project. It was a very enriching one. ‘A hobby keeps the doldrums away’, Phylis McGinley. Reading and hiking are my favourite hobbies to escape daily routines. In the professional world, I work as an Electrical Engineer. On the ending note, I wish a lot of success to JCI Quatre Bornes for the coming months and in a Covid19 free world.

Introducing the 2021 JCI Quatre Bornes Local Board

Greetings everyone. My name is Manish Sharma Beedasy, your 2021 JCI Quatres Bornes Local Treasurer. I currently work as an account manager and I joined JCI in May 2019 during the Vice-President Visit to Mauritius. I've started my JCI career with Ace Your Next Interview Training organised by JCI Quatre Bornes in 2019. I had the opportunity to work on the team of 2019 JCI Mauritius National Convention (NATCON) and to lead the 2020 JCI Mauritius Top Outstanding Young Person's Award (TOYP). A few years back I discovered hiking and boxing when a friend asked me to participate in these activities and since I enjoyed them, they became part of my hobbies.

I am Sanjanah Pareemamun and I am Local Vice President for the year 2021. I am a student at University of Technology and I joined JCI in September 2017. My journey in JCI Quatre Bornes enabled me to participate in different projects which have helped me grow and empower myself. One of the projects I would like to share is the donation drive in collaboration of The Good Shop which we started in 2020. This project will be a win-win for both JCI Quatre Bornes and the community, especially post COVID19. We shall collect items in good condition from our members and redistribute these to people in need. I believe that this project could be done on long-term basis. My hobbies include watching movies and documentaries.

The 2020 JCI Mauritius TOYP Awards Night was held on the 3rd December 2020 at the Dots restaurant, Ebene. We received the presence of numerous JCI Senators, Members and most importantly 2020 TOYP Participants which was highly appreciated. The ceremony went very smoothly and we even had the participation of the 2020 JCI Executive Vice President Asha Auckloo. The most touching part is the engagement of the participants with the JCI network. It was a pleasure to be in the presence of so many active citizens who dedicate their energy towards community improvements. I am very confident that every participant has inspired the JCI members with their stories and their journey to create a better tomorrow.

without them, this project would not have been a success. It was such a great pleasure to work with them and I must say that they have been essential in every step of this project. The experience of leading a JCI national flagship project has been very fruitful. I have encountered numerous challenges which definitely contributed to my personal development and project management skills. Manish Sharma Beedasy 2020 JCI Mauritius TOYP Project Director.

Meeting with Mr Nagen Mootoosamy TITLE - Mayor of Quatre Bornes

On 25 February, we met with the Mayor of Quatre Bornes, Nagen Mootoosamy for a courtesy visit. We presented our projects and discussed on potential collaborations between JCI Quatre Bornes and the Municpality of Quatre Bornes. The Mayor was very willing to help and we discussed some interesting projects on which we could work together. He explained that the main concern of the Municipality of Quatre Bornes is the traffic problems at Quatre Bornes that is due to the works related to the Metro Express. People have to take a different way to reach their destination and this is creating difficulties for the inhabitants. We then exchanged on our projects for the year. We began with the donation drive, which is an exciting project where we plan to collect goods and distribute to the people in need. The mayor was very keen on it and was happy to offer the help of the Municipality for the logistics. In spite of the COVID-19, we planned to be closer to the community of Quatre Bornes. We know of many people who are suffering from the consequences of the COVID-19 and hope that the collaboration with the Municipality will help us to provide some relief to those inhabitants. I would like to end with a special thanks to the Mayor of Quatre Bornes who made time for us in his busy schedule and I look forward to a fruitful collaboration. Some thoughts from our aspiring member Muhammad on induction

Dear Readers, I am Muhammad Joolfoo and I am an aspiring member. I found out about JCI on LinkedIn and after a full research I was inspired to join in by the ambition and work done by the JCI members, JCI wants to bring a change in the world by instructing us on how to improve ourselves and the world around us. Since I joined, I had the chance to attend two induction sessions held at the JCI Mauritius Secretariat at Quatre Bornes. During the first one I had the chance to follow JCI Effective Meetinga and JCI Discover which was delivered by Senator Nousrina Peerbux. The second one was about JCI Discover and JCI Explore which were instructed by Senator Nousrina Peerbux and 2021 National Vice President Jaya Mulloo respectively. The courses were very

enriching and the exercises and group discussion were interesting and engaging. I was very impressed by the fact that the voice and opinion of each and every participant are heard and taken into consideration. I loved the atmosphere and learnt many things to help me as a JCI member. The instructors were very friendly and very knowledgeable. By joining JCI, I can say that I have a platform to express myself and this is what I learnt from the induction sessions. Through the JCI network, you meet new people there and can bring something forward in terms of ideas, knowledge, profession, personality and projects. I was amazed and inspired by the different projects that all the local organisations have been working on and the way that they have tackled projects. I hope to

Reconnecting with Passerelle Women Centre

On 24 February 2021, our Immediate Past President, Vaishalee Beedasy scheduled a meeting with NGO Passerelle Women Centre for a possible collaboration during the year. This idea was given by our 2016 Local President Jordana Sunnassee who had carried out a few projects with this NGO during her term as local president.

However, the project is on hold now that the lockdown has been extended but we will keep in touch with the shelter to see how we can help the residents in other ways.

Vaishalee Beedasy Immediate Past President JCI Quatre Bornes

Passerelle Women Centre, located in Rose Hill is a shelter offering support services to women in distress. The shelter can house up to 30 residents, often mothers and their children. Following a fruitful collaboration in the past, JCI Quatre Bornes proposed to reinitiate discussions with the shelter to provide a more sustainable contribution to the residents of the shelter. This first visit to Passerelle Women Centre was to re-establish the contact. I met with Megane who is our contact person, who kindly granted me a few minutes in her busy schedule to discuss the proposed activities. We agreed that informal training sessions on practical subjects would be interesting for the women and we also agreed to plan a celebration.

water from Ganga Talao just before the lockdown. On top of that, it was the first time, my relatives and I stayed awake for the night of Shiva on the occasion of Maha Shivaratree…what a blissful experience it was. This second wave is different compared to the first one, in the sense that, the general population is more organized compared to last year. Furthermore, Work from home has become the new reality for many companies, so the economy will still be operating at much faster pace than the previous year.

It looks like History is repeating itself. Last year, we were in confinement in the same month and there was no celebration for the Independence of Mauritius. This second wave of the Covid-19 will be much harder on our mental, physical and emotional states whether we like it or not and economically, the whole Mauritian population will have to bear the consequences of this pandemic. But enough of the dark side of the Covid-19 pandemic. From my side, it has been pretty fair up till now. I got the chance to fetch the scared

Nevertheless, the number of local cases will definitely be greater than last year and many of us is expecting the worse. To keep a positive mindset, we must value the simple joys of life like having quality family life, learn new skills, social media detox, have a sun bath for 10 to 15 minutes every day and more importantly have some “ME TIME” which will definitely help in this troublesome time.

poverty and understand more about the severe conditions in which they live.

The pandemic has changed the world for me in all aspects. Firstly, we need to accept it and learn how to live with it. Covid-19 has allowed us to think very well again and make us realize that the world needs to be restructured. We learnt that we need to give time to ourselves and our dear ones. We need each other to combat this pandemic and we should apply this spirit of compassion and solidarity in our daily lives. A community is built up with the help and contributions of its members. We realized the importance of food and that we cannot waste it. Many people are having problems to buy food or keep their normal routine due to an increase in price or scarcity of products. This enables us to connect more with the plight of those who live in

However, in the context of Mauritius, we are more equipped to handle in this second wave compared to the first one. We already know about the sanitary protocols and how to keep it in place but we still need to take it seriously. The situation outside our house is still critical and each individual must realize this. We must try to step outside only for necessity and do our part to avoid spreading the virus of COVID-19. All in all, I think that we must take the second lockdown in a positive way. During this lockdown, learn to enjoy the simple pleasures. Spend some moments with your families and seize this opportunity to care more for your close ones. Good luck to parents whose children are going for exams and do your best to encourage them in this situation. Try to put yourself in the place of someone who is in a more difficult position and be satisfied with what you have. And let us take this time to think on how you can be better after the COVID-19. When the rumours of a second lockdown were circulating, I had decided that this time, I will not take things too seriously. Even though my community was labelled as the red-zone, I took things easy because I accepted that I can only take the maximum precautions on my side and the rest would be outside my control. I also took a break from keeping up with the news, listening only to the critical sections and focused on a healthier work-life balance. With JCI, I was able to contribute to the community, even by staying indoors and this was very encouraging. Hearing the calls of distress from people around us was not easy. Celebrating our Independence TITLE Day Online online

March 12 commemorates the independence of Mauritius and also its accession to the status of the Republic. This anniversary is usually celebrated grandly by all Mauritians. On this day, there is the solemn commemoration with the protocols and national guests, the flag-raising ceremony at Champ de Mars accompanied by the parades and cultural events throughout the country. Unfortunately this year, the lockdown was announced just a few days before the National Day. We knew that everybody would be missing the celebrations and therefore, we decided that it would be a great occasion for us to celebrate online with all JCI Mauritius members.

JCI Quatre Bornes organised a zoom session with the members. We were even happier to be joined by members who are abroad. We began with the National Anthem which we sang happily and proudly followed by a moment of exchange among the members. The fun part was the quiz of the history of Mauritius and the improvised Bingo at home. Everyone enjoyed it and this game brought a lot of smiles. Yes, JCI is not only about the projects but also about the bonding we share with our members. It is true that at JCI the brotherhood of man really transcends the sovereignty of nations
