About Marion Jazz Band One:

Marion Jazz Band One this year performed several home concerts as well as in the Coe College Jazz Summit, and at the NEIBA District Jazz Festival. Several students in this band are also veterans of the Jazz All-State Band. They are directed by Logan Vanderwiel.

About Mike Conrad:

Mike Conrad is a composer, improviser, and assistant professor in Jazz Studies and Music Education at the University of Northern Iowa. He has been recognized for his arranging and composing with four ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Awards and seven DownBeat Awards, as winning the prestigious Sammy Nestico award, given by the US Air Force Airman of Note. His arrangements have been performed all around the world, including the legendary Birdland Club in New York, the Netherlands, and even at President Obama’s second inaugural.

As a performer, Conrad has toured China, played at the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia, Italy, and appeared at various jazz festivals and venues all over the United States.

His latest projects include a recent trio release and the Iowa Jazz Composers Orchestra, a big band exclusively performing works by Iowa Composers.

He’s appeared at the Umbria Jazz Festival, the Rochester International Jazz Festival, the Rockport Jazz Festival, the Twin Cities Jazz Festival, and the Iowa City Jazz Festival.
