There’s a cool story that goes along with this chart. Soul Bagel was composed by Cedar Rapids Washington grad Ryan Middagh, now on the jazz faculty at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. While he was at UNI, Ryan wrote this chart as a trombone feature for his classmate Joel Nagel. Get it? Joel, of course, is now the director of Ryan’s alma mater Cedar Rapids Washington.

About The Clear Creek-Amana Jazz Ensemble:

The Clear Creek Amana Jazz Ensemble is one of 4 instrumental groups at Clear Creek Amana High School. The Jazz Ensemble participates in many festivals around the area and have been invited to participate in the Iowa Jazz Championships several times over the last decade. They are in their first year under the direction Sam Bills, who is one of a growing number of directors and guest artists who performed in the Corridor Jazz Project as students.

About Anthony Williams:

Anthony Williams joined the music faculty at the University of Northern Iowa in 2013. He has previously taught at the University of Mary, University of Memphis, and Lemoyne-Owen College. He has degrees from the University of Central Arkansas (BM), University of Northern Iowa (MM), and the University of Memphis (DMA). He is a past winner of the University of Memphis Concerto Competition and the National Association of Negro Musicians Concerto competition.

Nationally, he’s performed with the Memphis Symphony, Arkansas Symphony, the Ray Charles Orchestra, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Jeff Coffin, John Mayer, as well as in our region with Orchestra Iowa, Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony, Dubuque Symphony, the Iowa Jazz Composers Orchestra, Big Fun, and the NOLA Jazz Band.
