About The Linn-Mar Colton Center Jazz Ensemble:
Linn-Mar’s Colton Center Jazz Linn-Mar’s Colton Center Jazz Ensemble is the premier jazz ensemble and one of four jazz bands at Linn-Mar High School. Colton Center Jazz Ensemble’s season highlights include the Linn-Mar Jazz-a-Thon our annual fundraiser, the annual Java n’ Jazz concert featuring guest artist Sharel Cassity, the Liberty Jazz Festival, Coe Jazz Summit, and the NEIBA Jazz Festival. They took 1st place at the Coe Jazz Summit, where Carter Buske received an Outstanding Solo award.
About Steve Shanley:
Steve Shanley is assistant professor of music at Coe College, where he coordinates the music education and jazz studies programs. He is also the music director and conductor of the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band.
He has directed ensembles at the Iowa Bandmasters Association conference, directed the Iowa All-State Jazz Band, and conducted at the American School Band Directors convention. When he was the director at CR Washington, his jazz bands qualified for the Iowa Jazz Championships every year.
He is also in demand as a composer and arranger. Over 1,000 of his works have been performed by ensembles around the world. And in fact, the tune you are about to hear is a brand-new Steve Shanley arrangement. He is past president the Jazz Educators of Iowa and Co-Chair of the Iowa Jazz Championships. He is a member of the Jazz Educators of Iowa Hall of Fame and holds degrees from the University of Northern Iowa, University of Minnesota, and a Ph.D from the University of Iowa. Performing with Linn-Mar marks a return to his roots as like Mrs. Tiede, he is a Linn-Mar alum returning to his high school band.
