About The Independence Jazz Orchestra:

The Independence Jazz Orchestra has a long and stored history among Iowa jazz bands. Long-time director David Lang kept the program at the very top of the 3A class for decades. And they haven’t lost a step under current director Joel Knipe.

Mr. Knipe is from Fort Madison, and his band director was Jen Tiede, in her first job after college. Later, when Mr. Knipe was in college himself, his student teaching practicum was with… you guessed, Mrs. Tiede. It’s extra special for us to get to bring them together this year at The Corridor Jazz Project.

About Jen Tiede:

Jen Tiede directs The Colton Center Jazz Ensemble at Linn-Mar as well as Symphony Band and Studio Jazz Band. Linn-Mar is also her alma mater. She attended the University of Northern Iowa has her Master of Arts from the University of St. Thomas.  Like Mrs. Schmidt, she is also member of the Iowa Women’s Jazz Orchestra and also performs in the Iowa Jazz Composer’s Orchestra as well as at her church. She is an executive board member of the Jazz Educators of Iowa, extending her work in jazz education to the entire state.
