About the Iowa City West Jazz Ensemble:
The West High Jazz Ensemble is one of three big bands at West High. The band performs at a variety of concerts and festivals throughout the entire academic year. They also bring in a guest artist each year for their Jazz Cafe, a fundraising concert held each December. West has a brand new director in 2024, but he’s no stranger to us. Brian Zeglis has been a guest for Corridor Jazz multiple times.
About Rich Medd:
During his career as director at West High, Rich Medd built the program up to involving nearly 100 students in the program and more than two decades of consecutive years qualifying for Jazz Championships.
Rich has a long and illustrious career as a player. While in school, he played lead trombone in the McDonald’s Jazz Band and the Disneyland All-American College Marching band. He has played for more than two decades in Orquesta Alto Maiz, is a member of Mike Conrad’s Iowa Jazz Composers Orchestra, Blake Shaw’s Biggish Band, Jim Dreier’s Latin group Ritmocano, the Rod Pierson Big Band many more.
It was exactly 10 years ago that Rich brought Brian Zeglis to West as a guest artist for Corridor Jazz. So it was only natural that Mr. Zeglis would want to reciprocate in his first year as a director at West.
