Lady Bulldogs standing tall in district play The Howe Lady Bulldogs continued to cruise through district play with two more wins during the week. Howe (19-6, 51) won at Leonard on Tuesday by a score of 40-26 and then turned around and outpaced Bonham, 66 -29 on Friday night. The Lady Bulldogs for the season are averaging 49.88 points per game while allowing 36.40. But in district play, the girls have tuned it up to 58.67 points per game and allowing only 31.33. The next win for Howe will give them 20 on the season which would make six of the last eight seasons with 20 or more. The two years, Howe fell shy of 20 was 2014 (17 wins) and 2017 (19 wins). On Tuesday, Howe got off to a somewhat slow start with only a 9 -5 advantage after the first period. But the Lady Bulldogs went on a tear in the second with 14 points scored and only a free throw allowed. With a 23-6 lead at the half, cruise control was the pace for the second half. Cassidy Anderson had her biggest scoring game of the year as she clocked in with 18 followed by Sierra Copeland’s 11. Other scorers were Jenna Honore (5), Trinity Williams (3), and Ally Harvey (3). period. The Lady Bulldogs led 37 -13 at the half and went on a 20-6 run in the third period to put the game out of reach. Harvey’s 20 points led Howe with Copeland following with 15 and Anderson with 12. Other scorers were Honore (8), Williams (6), Molly Wilson (3), and Paetyn Ford (2). Copeland led Howe with 10 total rebounds. Howe will play at home against Whitewright seeking their 20th victory on the season and Head Coach Derek Lands’ 435th career win.
Noah Riley wins spelling bee Noah Riley, an eighth-grader, correctly spelled stirrups and became the winner of the 4th annual spelling bee at Howe Middle School. Twenty-two students battled to be the top speller, spelling words such as fiercest, mulish, vortices, and nefarious. Noah will represent Howe in the Grayson County Spelling Bee on Tuesday, February 4, in the auditorium at the South Campus of Grayson County College. These bees are sponsored by the E.W. Scripps Company and are the precursor to the National Spelling Bee held in Washington D.C. in May.
