Thissummer,FeedMy Sheep,thelocalfood pantry,isdoinganevent tofeedtheschoolchildrenoftheareaoverthe summer.FeedMy Sheepislocatedwithin theHoweMethodist Churchandfeeds,on average,40-60people perweek.Therearean averageof5newfamiliesperweekcurrently, notincludingthesummerbackpackprogram. Theaveragecostof obtainingfoodforthe pantrytogivetothe communityinaddition todonationsreceived byNorthTexasFood Bankandothers,isat least$3600permonth.
The“backpackpro-
gram”wassetupby FeedMySheepincooperationwiththelocal schoolsofHowe,Van AlstyneandTomBean toallowfamiliestosign uptoreceivebackpacks fullofnon-perishable foodweeklyoverthe summerforchildrenin need.Theprogramprovides280-350backpacks weeklytochildren,with anaveragecosttothe pantryofatleast$2400 permonth.
Thosereceivingfood mustfilloutpaperwork statingincomeandmust meetcertainrequirementstoregularlyobtain servicesfromthepantry. Therearetightrequirementsalsomaintainedat (Continued on Page 12)

ThisweektheCityofHowebeganthe processofswitchingthewateronthe WestsideofHowetosurfacewater fromLakeLavon.Thechangeinwateristhesameprocessthathappened ontheeastsideofHowepreviously thatcausedyellow/orangewater.In previousstatementstheCityexpressed thewaterdiscolorationisnotprojected tobeassevereontheWestsideas theyhadbeenontheEastside.The followingarestatementssharedbythe Cityontheirwebsiteregardingthe watersituationonJune10th:
FirstStatement:
“Previously,theCityofHowenotified citizensthatachangewouldbetaking placeJune10,2025,inresidualdisinfectantfromfreechlorinetochloramines.Thisisduetointroducingsurfacewatertothesystemonthe
westsideofUS75.Howe'ssurfacewaterfromGTUAwillnow beabletoservetheentirecity. However,theCitywillattimes stillrelyonthecombinedthree deepwaterwellsonbothsidesof US75.
Withtheintroductionofanew watersource,thereisthepossibilityofdiscoloredwaterasthe changeindisinfectantsreactswith eachother.Wedonotbelieveit willbenearlyasimpactfulasit waswheninitiallyintroducedon theeastsideofUS75inNovember2022.PublicWorkshastaken measurestoflushtheentiresystemtodayastheintroductionbegins.Thisshouldsignificantly helptoreducetheimpact.

MotherhoodColumn Whenwemovedherenearly10 yearsago,wequicklylearnedour kidswouldbeaddingsomething newtotheiridentities:theywere HoweBulldogs.ThattruthwassolidifiedduringourveryfirstexperienceataPEdemonstrationledby then-coach,CoachSimmons.My husbandandIwereimpressedbythe military-stylecheers,chants,andthe waythestudentsfolloweddirections withprecision.Wequicklyrealized ourgirlsneededtobesignedupfor softball,andthatitwastimetodig ourheelsindeephereinHowe.
Weknewbeforecomingthatthis wasagenerationaltown.Wewere thenewcomers andtherewere definitelygrowingpains.Icannow seehowourolderkidsdidn’tquitefit inasnaturallyasouryoungestones whostartedkindergartenhere.We hadtoelbowourwayin,sotospeak. Butitwasworthit.We’vecometo lovethetraditionsofthissmall town thecheersandchants,communitypeprallies,DayofChampions,theprideinHowe’sstellarband competitions,andthatundeniable Bulldogspirit.Irememberlookingat apictureonedayandrealizing90% ofourwardrobewasHoweBulldog attire.
Now,ourtownisgrowing and withgrowthcomeschange.I’mnota bigfanofgrowingpains.Someof themreallyhurt,evenifthey’renot necessarilybad.Othersdon’teven makeusblinkatthetime,butthey
quietlychipawayatwhatmakesthis townspecial.
TherearesometraditionsIsincerely hopeweholdontoasHowecontinuestogrow:

Yes,wemaystruggletowininsports sometimes,butwecanstillbe proud ofourkidswhogivetheir best,ofthecoachesandteacherswho showupeverydaytopushandencouragethem.Thatkindofpridematters.

TexasHistoryMinute Thegeneisthe fundamentalbuildingblockof life. Genesdeterminehowcells functionandwhat traitsarepassed fromonegenerationtothe next. Littlewasunderstoodabout themwhentheywerediscoveredin thelate1800s. However,theresearch ofoneTexasscientistandNobelPrize winner,Dr.HermannMuller,ledto majorbreakthroughsinunderstanding thenatureofgenes.
HermannJosephMullerwas borninNewYorkCityin1890. His fatherwasametalworker,andhis motherwasaBritishimmigrant. He becamefascinatedwithbiologyata youngage. Hegraduatedfromhigh schoolattheageof16andentered whatisnowColumbiaUniversity. He ultimatelycompletedhisbachelors degreeinbiologyin1910fromColumbiaandearnedadoctorateby 1916.
In1915,Mullerwasoffereda positionatRiceUniversityinHouston asabiologyprofessorandresearcher. Ricehadonlybeenfoundedthree yearsbefore,anditsleaderswereanxioustoestablishitsreputationasacenterforscientificresearch. Hecontinuedtofocushisresearchonthegeneticsoffliesandincreasinglylookedat geneticmutations. However,thelack ofavailablelabassistantsduringWorld WarIgreatlylimitedhisabilitiesto continuehisresearch. HeleftRiceand teamedupwithhisformermentorat ColumbiaUniversity. Aspartofthe continuationoftheirwork,Mullerwas abletodetermineby1920thatthesize ofwingsofflieswasdeterminedgenetically,amajorbreakthroughinunderstandinggenetics. HereturnedtoTexasasaprofessor andresearcherattheUniversityof Texasinthefallof1920. WhileatUT, heconductedsomeofhismostimportantworkregardinggenetics. In 1923,hebeganusingx-rayradiationin hisgeneticstudies. Mullerwasbecomingincreasinglyrenownedamong scientists,andhewasinvitedtoserve asaspecialprofessorinphysiologyat theUniversityofChicagoin1925beforeresuminghisworkinAustin. By 1926,Mullerwasabletoconclusively demonstratethatx-rayscausedlethal mutationsinflies. Thediscoverycementedhisreputationinthescientific community. By1928,hewasalso abletoshowthathighlevelsofradiationalsocausedfataldamageinother typesofinsectsandinplantssuchas cornandstronglysuggestedthatradiationalsoposedadangertohumanbeings. Hecametowritedozensofscientificarticlesoutlininghismanyfindings.
Uptothattime,verylittlewas understoodabouttheeffectsofradiationonanimaltissuesandcells. Scientistsexperimentingwithradiationhad reportedstrangeburnsandincreased cancerratesforyears. Whilethe words“radiation”and“mutations” becameembeddedintheimaginations ofmanysciencefictionnovelists,comicbookcreators,andthegeneralpublic
intheyearstocome,Muller’sexperimentsconclusivelyshowedthedestructiveeffectsofhighlevelsofx-rays oncells. Thex-raywasquicklybecominganindispensabletoolinmedicaldiagnosticsinthe1920s,butMuller’sdiscoverydemonstratedtheneed tolimitthepowerofx-rayscansand exposure.
MullerlefttheUniversityof Texasin1932andspentthenextseveralyearsworkinginlabsandteaching atvariousuniversitiesintheUnited StatesandEurope. In1942and1943, heworkedonceagainattheUniversity ofChicagowherehebrieflyworked onaspectsoftheManhattanProject, America’stop-secretefforttoproduce anatomicbombduringWorldWarII.
In1945,MulleracceptedapositionasprofessorofzoologyatIndianaUniversity. In1946,hewasgiven theNobelPrizeinMedicineforhis workingenetics,themostrespected awardinscience. He spentthelastyearsofhislifewarning aboutthedangersofnuclearwarand radiationpoisoning,callingforanend tothenucleararmsraceofthe1950s and1960sandcallingforanendto nucleartesting.
Scientistsnotonlyimpactthe worldwiththeirowndiscoveriesbut alsowiththestudentsthey teach. Mullerhadatremendousinfluenceonhisstudents,helpingtotraina numberofimportantscientists. Dr. WilsonStone,alongtimeprofessorat theUniversityofTexas,studiedunder Mullerandcontinuedhisworkonradiationanddemonstratedhowultravioletradiationaffectedbacteriaandwas lateraconsultantfortheAtomicEnergyCommission. Mulleralsohelped trainDr.GeorgeSnell,whosharedthe 1980NobelPrizeinMedicineforhis workthatshowedthelinkbetween genesandsuccessfulorgantransplants. FamedastronomerCarlSaganalso studiedunderMuller,workinginone ofhislabswhilestillanundergraduate. MullerdiedathishomeinIndianapolisin1967attheageof76.
Droppingthestones, searchingwithin Thosewho haveneverexperiencedan addictioncan seemunsympatheticanduncaring.Why? Thereareseveralreasons,like thinkingthat self-inflicting destructiondoes notdeserve compassion,or maybeit’sthearroganceofthinking theythemselveswouldneverbeso blindastoletsomethinglikethathappentothem.Ifeelthegreaterconsiderationwouldbe,“isbecomingcaptured inthedependencyofachemicalmore offensivetoGodthananyothertype ofobsessiveattractionordependence?”Isdrugaddictionmoreofasin thantheaddictionofovereating,pornography,alcohol,anger,exaggerating,orgambling.Manyintoday’s worldhaveevendevelopedadependencyassociatedwithsocialmedia.So, whyisiteasiertodiscriminateand haveprejudiceagainstanotheraddict thanforexample,someonewholiesor cheatsontheirtaxes?Maybeforsome, it’seasiertocondemnsomeonethatin theirdenialisconsideredhigheronthe listofintentionaldestructivebehavior.
Irecentlyreceivedacallfromadistraughtmotherthathasadaughterwho isineverysenseofthewordanaddict. ThefamilylivesontheWestCoast andshebegantotellherpainfulstory ofhowtheywereonceahappyand blessedfamily.Theywenttochurch, werefinanciallystableandsoproudof bothofherbeautifuldaughters.Sadly, thegirlsstartedhangingaroundbad crowdsanddriftedaway.Thatwas elevenyearsago.Onedaughterisrecovering,andtheotherisincarcerated inourlocaldetentioncenter.Imadean appointmenttoseetheonewhoishere inmycity.Thosewhoworkthere knowmeasacommunitychaplain andallowedmetomeetwithherprivatelyinasmallofficespace.Wehad aproductiveconversationasshecried moretearsinforty-fiveminutesthan somepeopleweepinalifetime.She wantstochangeandgobacktoway thingsusedtobe.Sheremembersflirtingwiththecuriosityofgettinghigh whichseemedexcitingatthetimeand howsheeventuallysurrenderedtothe subtletemptationstoexperiencethe fleetingpleasureseveryonewastalkingabout.
Slowlyshebecameentangledinaspiderwebwhichledherdeeperintodependencyandinashortperiodoftime ithadherwrappedtightlyinthebondageofdarknessanddespair.Yes,she madebadchoices,butweallhave. TherealityisthatGodwantstorecoverandrestoreeveryone’slife,butHe cannotbringhealingandbalanceifwe willnotletgooftheproblem.Whateverwearetryingtobreakfreefrom,we musttakeitonechoice,oneday,and oneprayeratatime.Itwillnotbesimpleorpainlessforthisyoungwoman oranyoneelsetoregaincontroloftheir life,nonethelesswehavethisglorious
promise;“ButJesusbeheldthem,and saiduntothem,Withmenthisisimpossible;butwithGodallthingsare possible”Matthew19:26.
Whendiscussingthenegativeattitudes ofjudgmentandcondemnation,weare remindedofthetrueaccountfoundin JohnchaptereightwhereChristinterruptsapublicexecutioninvolvinga womanwhohadbeencaughtintheact ofadultery.Thereligiousleadersasked JesusconcerningHisthoughtsabout theMosaiclawwiththeintentionof confusingHim,towhichHesimply replied,“Hewhoiswithoutsinamong you,lethimcastthefirststoneather.” Thiswasamazing,butthestorydoes notstophere.Astheexecutionsquad quietlywalkedaway,Jesustoldthe womanthatheraccusersnolonger condemnedherandneitherdidHe,go andsinnomore.Whenweseetheanimosity,disgust,andcontempttoward thosewhohavemadehorriblechoices, thequestionremainsastowhyhuman natureisalwaysreadytothrowthefirst stone?
Irecalltheoldsayingabouthowpeoplewholiveinglasshousesshouldnot throwrocksandthisshouldremindus ofGod’smercytowardus.Ibelieve it’simportantinthesetroublingtimes, tobemoreforgivingandmoreconcernedaboutmakingsureourown heartisrightwithGod.Spendingour timefocusingandjudgingothers,causesaninfectionofpessimism,resentment,andevenhatred.Whenweneglecttoprayforthosewhohavelost theirway,wecontinuetogrowcold andharshwhichaddstoourmisery.
