I(theeditor)amfairly younginthegrand scheme,butoldenough tohavebeentrainedin thiscraftbeforeAIcame along.Inthe“Unsinkable KarlaMcDonald”article lastweek,Iwasexcited tofindoutthatnowAI couldtranscriptvoice recordedinterviewsto text.Nomorewritingout quotes,orsoIthought!It endedupitwasmore worktotrytorewritethe AIerrors.Combined withhumanerrorattemptingtofixit,itresultedinagrammatically poorandchoppilywrittenarticle,inretrospect.

neededintheareatokeeppricing down.Ithinkourclosestonesare eitherupinOklahomaortheyare downinMidlothian.Theaggregate production,therearesomeconcerns becausecurrentlymostofouraggregatewearegettingforcementproductioniscomingfromTurkeyand Egypt.Thereisapushtogetaway fromthatandtogetitherelocally resourced.Thereiswhatiscalledan AustinChalk,whichisthelimestone basethatrunsfromSanAntonioall thewayuptoourareaandthenheads outeasttoLouisiana.BlackMountain,inordertogettothatlimestone theywillhavetoremovethetoplayer ofsoil,gettothebedrock,andthe onlywaytoextractthelimestonein ordertoproducecementistoblast minethatbedrock.Obviously,ifyou areputtingdynamiteinthebedrock andblowingitupitisgoingtocause vibrationswhichthenaffectGlobal Wafers,located3.8milesawayfrom thecementkiln.Blastingthatclose, theywillfeelthevibrationsontheir crystalingotsandstabilizers,which willcauseadisruptionandeventually majorproblemstothechipmanufacturingwhichobviouslypowerseverythingwedothesedays.Black Mountaincamebackandsaidthey woulddostripmininginstead,aprocesswithanexcavatorthatconstantly clawsatthelimestone,whichwillstill causevibrationsandbeinglessthan4
milesawaythatisstillgoingtohave enoughvibrationsthatwebelieve willaffectit.”
MarrexplainedthatBill1758isabill thatwillcauseconstructionofthe DorchesterBlackMountaincement kilntobehaltedviatheavenueofa halttoanyissuanceofpermitsgranted.Inordertoproceedwiththeirprocesstheymusthaveanairpermit granted-withthisbilltheircompany andanyothercementkilnswillnot beabletoconstructwithina10mile radiusofGlobalWafersbecausethey willnotbegrantedtheairpermitthey needtobuild.Also,withthisbill therewillbeathirdparty,1.5million dollarfunded,seismicstudyconductedbytheUniversityofTexasAustin totesthowfartheseseismicvibrationsgooutfromthesefacilities.This studywillbethefirstofitskindprovideinsightastohowcloseasemiconductorplantcanbelocatedtoa cementkilnandnotdisrupteachother.“ThisisapilotprograminGraysonCountythatpotentiallycouldset thestandardfortherestofthestate andhaveadditionalbusinessescome intothestatethatwillbenefitus.It couldhaveverybigimpactsonthe economyofthestateofTexas.”Marr alsoexplainedthatthebillhasatime limitof6years-ifthestudyisnot finishedin6yearsthenitwillbe “freegame”afterthat.

Summerishere thekidsarehome, andstrictscheduleshavebeen thrownoutthewindow!Itfeelslikea breathoffreshair untilitdoesn’t.
Despitewhattheymightthink,my kidsthriveonschedules.We’rehappier,healthier,andmoreactivewhen wehaveatleastsomestructurein place.Everysummerlooksalittle differentbecauseourkidsaregrowingup,theirinterestsarechanging, andschoolathleticsnowbleedinto oursummermonths.
Ifyourkidsarelittle,asummer schedulemightlooklikegettingup andexploringinthemornings parks,museums,storytime,splash pads,andplaydateswithfriends. Packsnacksandalunchtostretch thefun!Whenyougethome,it’snap ormovietime(yes,foryou,too!). Afterthat,cleanupthehousetogether,thendiveintoartsandcraftsor indoorplaywhiletheTexassundoes itsthingoutside.
Middleschoolers?They’reprobably sleepingin.Youcaneithergetfrustrated orworkaroundit.Ifyou needthemupearly,letthemknow thenightbefore.
Thissummer,we’vecreatedadaily listforeachkid.Threekidsathome, threeseparatelists.Eachoneincludes aspecificareaofthehousethey’re responsiblefor,withbothdailytasks
(savesmysanity!)andafewdeepcleanitemsfortheweek.Wealso includethingsthatmattertoourfamily:scripturestudy,onehourofreading,onehourpracticingasport,time withasibling,andtimeforapersonal hobby.Oncethelistisdone,theycan asktogodosomethingfun.
Areweperfectatit?Absolutelynot. Somedaysthelistbarelygets touched.Butwe’retrying!Every weektheyrotateandtakeonanew areaofthehouse.
Myolderkidswithjobsdon’thave dailylists,buttheydohaveweekly chorestiedtotheircarprivileges.
Nowforthefunpart bucketlists! Wesitdownatthebeginningofsummerandaskourkidswhattheywant todo.Usuallyit’sswimming,atrip, ortimewithfriends(andofcourse, sleepingin).
Somesummerswehittheroadfora hikingtrip.Otheryears,itjustdoesn’t workout.Butweaimforatleastone trip,evenifit’sjustadaytriptoRobber’sCave.Oneyear,wedidastaycationinFortWorth zoo,stockyards,andavisittotheBureauof EngravingandPrintingtowatch moneybeingmade.Anothersummer, wediscoveredFortSmith,Arkansas, andspenttheweekendatthewater parkandhistoricalsites.Dinosaur ValleyandBoulderParkarealsofun, budget-friendlyspotstoexplore.

TexasHistoryMinute Twoorphaned brothersheaded westinsearchof adventureanda newlife. Thestory iscommoninthe annalsofthefrontier. Inthecaseof broth-
ersFrancisandThomasLubbockofSouthCarolina,their storywouldplayanimportantrolein TexasHistory.
FrancisRichardLubbockwas borninBeaufort,SouthCarolina,in 1815toDr.Henryand AnnLubbock. Whilestillaninfant, thefamilymovedtoCharleston,where youngerbrotherThomaswasbornin 1817. Tragedystruckthefamilyin 1829whentheirfatherdied. Withthe familystruggling,the14-yearoldFrancisquitschooltoworkasa clerk.
In1835,afterthedeathoftheir mother,thetwobrothersmoved toNewOrleans,wheretheelderLubbockworkedwithavarietyof businessesandthe17-year-oldThomasworkedasacottonagent. TherevolutioneruptinginTexascaptivated theirattention.

In 1836,FrancisLubbockfollowedhis brothertoTexasandsettledinwhat becameHoustontosetupastore. He becameheavilyinvolvedinpolitics andwasappointedascomptrollerby TexasPresidentSamHoustonin 1837.
In1857,hewaselectedlieutenantgovernorofthestatebutlostre-electionin 1859toEdClark,aUnionist. Nevertheless,LubbockwasadelegatetotheDemocraticNationalConventionin1860. Heandothersoutherndelegatesclashedwithnorthern delegatesovertheconciliatoryplatformtheypushedtopreserve theUnion. TheDemocraticParty fractured,andaconventionofsouthern Democrats,chairedbyLubbock, pushedtheirowncandidate,VicePresidentJohnBreckinridgeoverthe nationalDemocraticcandidate,StephenA.Douglas.
Inthemeantime,ThomasLubbockwasanardentsecessionist andcampaignedforyearsforsecession. OnceTexassecededin1861,he wenttoVirginiatoenlistintheConfederateArmy,fightingintheArmyof NorthernVirginiaduringtheCivil War. Hesawmanybattlesanddiedat aKentuckyhospitalin1862asacolonelatage44.

SamHoustonwasforcedfromoffice. Thatfall,Lubbockchallengedhis oldfoeClarkinthegubernatorialelection. Lubbockwonbyascant124votemargin.
Asgovernor,theCivilWarwas thefocusofFrancisLubbock’sadministration. HewasanoutspokendefenderoftheConfederacyandthe draft. Heevenpushedfordraftingnon -citizensintothearmyaswell. He attemptedtoincreasetrade withMexico,evenofferingto tradeUnitedStatesbondsheld byTexasandcottonforweapons. LubbockattemptedtospurdefensemanufacturinginTexas,tolittle effect. ThechaoticwhirlwindofCivil Warpoliticsconsumedhisadministration,andhedeclinedtorunforreelectionin1863.
LubbockenlistedintheConfederateArmyattheageof46andwas madealieutenantcolonel. Hehelped organizesuppliesandtroopsforthe defenseofLouisianaduringthe 1864RedRivercampaignandserved onthestaffofseveralgenerals. InAugust1864,Lubbockwasappointedas amilitaryaidetoConfederatePresidentJeffersonDavis. Hewent toVirginiatoupdateDavisonactivitieswestoftheMississippiRiver. This voyagewasmadeevenmoredifficult withtheUnionnavalblockadeofthe SouthandthatUnionforcesnowcontrolledtheMississippiRiver,cutting theConfederacyin half. Lubbockspentthenextseveral monthsinRichmond,watchingthe ConfederacydisintegrateasUnion forcesencircledthecityandlaidsiege toit.
TheUnionArmybrokethrough ConfederatelinesinApril1865,and theConfederategovernment fled,Lubbockincluded. Davis,Lubbo ck,andanumberofothersheaded southinamadflighttoavoidcapture andtotrytokeeptheirgovernment alive. Severaldayslater,Lubbockwascaptured inGeorgia. Hewasheldatanarmy prisoninDelawarewhereheawaited hisfate. Aftereightmonths,hewas releasedaspartofanamnestyprogram andreturnedtoTexas.
In1876,theTexaslegislatureorganizedLubbockCountyinWestTexasinhonorofThomasLubbock. Its namesakecitywasorganizedafew yearslaterandacenturylaterwould growtoacityofmorethanaquarterof amillionresidents. ThesurvivingLubbockBrother,Francis,continuedtopiecehislifebacktogetherafter theCivilWarandReconstructionand eventuallyre-enteredpolitics. He servedasstatetreasurerfrom1878to 1891.
