HappyIndependence Day,thisweek!Incelebrationoftheholiday, wearegoingtodoa historyrecaponhow thisholidayoriginated, forthoseofuswhohave livedawhilesince7th gradeAmericanHistory class.Thesehistorical factsweregathered fromavarietyof sources,butmainly fromHistory.com.
AmericanIndependence Dayoriginatesback fromtheRevolutionary War.PriortotheRevolutionaryWar,forovera decadeBritishauthoritiesandcolonistshad risingtensionbetween them.TheFrenchand IndianWar,alsoknown astheSevenYears’War lastedfrom1756-1763, andresultedinmore territoriesunderBritish rule.Withexpanding Britishrulecameincreasedtaxes,including theStampActof1765, theTownshendActsof 1767andtheTeaActof 1773,tonameafew. Increasedtaxesledto heatedprotestsfrom colonistswhoresented thelackofrepresentationtheyhadinParliament.In1770,thecolonistsresistedinamob form,leadingtoThe BostonMassacre-in whichBritishsoldiers openfiredoncolonists, killing5men.In1773,
theTeaActwasreleased. FollowingtheSevenYear War,GreatBritianwasin tremendousdebt,which theysoughttofixbytaxingthecitizensandattemptingtobailoutkey playersintheBritish Economy.Oneofthose playersintheBritisheconomywasTheEastIndia Company,whichtheBritishgovernmentgavea monopolyontheimportationandsaleofteainthe colonies.Colonists’resistancetothismoveby theBritishgovernment resultedintheBostonTea PartyinDecemberof 1773.AgroupofBostonianscalledthe“Sonsof Liberty”,agrassroots groupknownatthetime forcivildisobedience,hid theiridentities,boarded3 Britishships,anddumped 342chestsofteaintothe BostonHarbor.The amountofteadumpedinto theharborwouldbethe equivalenttodayofabout 1milliondollars’worthof tea.
InresponsetotheBoston TeaParty,KingGeorgeIII ofEnglandgavehisroyal consentto“TheCoercive Acts”,alsoknownasthe IntolerableActs.These actswereaseriesoflaws establishedbytheBritish GovernmenttotrytoregaincontrolofMassachusettsandpunishthedisobedienceofthepatriots. LastMonday,theHowe ISDBoardofTrustees gatheredtogetherfora specialmeetingalready previouslyscheduledto discussthebudget,with oneadditionalitemaddedonthetable–employeetermination.Andrew Harvey,formerHead FootballCoachandAthleticDirectorwasthe topicofthenightfor manyofthemeeting attendees.

“DearHoweISDFamilies: Iwantedtofollowup withyouregardingMr. Harvey.Asyouall know,onJune24,2025, theDistrictwasmade awarethatAndrewHarvey,AthleticDirector/ HeadFootballCoach, wasarrestedbytheTarrantCountySheriff’sOffice.Followingnotificationfromlawenforcement,IimmediatelynotifiedtheTEAStateBoard ofEducatorCertification, whichgovernsteacher certifications,aswellas ChildProtectiveServices. Fortherestoflastweek,I conductedanindividualizedassessmentofthe conductunderlyingthe

Igetthisalot,sohere goes.“Monte,whydo youlovehighschool footballsomuch?”The answerisdeepandall overtheplace.Asa youngkid,Igrewupina smalltownwheremy momanddadbothgraduatedfromthehigh schoolinthatsametown. Ilookeduptotheplayers thatworethesamecolor jerseysandletterjackets thatmyparentswore.At ayoungage,Ilearned
thatIwasapassionatepersonandIhadathirstfor winning(maybebeyond normal).
In1985,theHoweBulldogswenttothethird roundoftheplayoffsasa Cinderellaunderdogand whodoesn’tloveanunderdogplayingagainsta perennialstatepowerhouse andtakingthemdownto thewireandleavingno oneinGrovetonasking, “HoweWho?”anymore. Thatkindofthingmakes youhaveenormouspride
foryourhometown.After thatseason,theplayers andCoachFryardrove aroundHowethrowing outalloftheirworn-out footballstokidsinthe neighborhoods.Icaught oneofthoseballson Highway5nearDavis Street.Itwasabetterfeelingtomethancatching theceremonialopening pitchfromJoeDiMaggio.

WehavereachedouttotheChild AdvocacyCentertoprepareadditionalsupportsforanystudentsthatmay havebeenavictimofmistreatmentor abuse,andweareformulatingaplan tosupportthosestudentsstruggling withmanagingtheemotionsofarole modeldisappointingthem. Iwill followupwiththosesupportsnext weekifnotsooner.
TheBoardofTrusteesmadeitabundantlyclearlastnightthatmisconduct thatendangersaminororcouldendangeraminorchildwillnotbetoleratedwithinHoweISD.Weappreciatethesupportandpatienceofthe communityasweworkthroughthis difficultprocess. Althoughthemeetingwasoriginally scheduledtoreviewandpresentthe Proposed2025-2026BudgetandTax RateInformation,pendingstatelaws effecttheexactknownnumbersthe SchoolBoardisabletopresentatthis time.TheSchoolBoardhasworked diligentlytoplanasmuch“ahead”as theypossiblycanandareprojectedto savemoneyonseveralpendingprojects.However,statelawsthataffect thebudgethavenotbeenenactedto allowcompletelyaccuratenumbers currently,therefore,wewillwaitto reportthosenumbersuntilaccuracyis available.

ButIdidn’twanttojustwearthejersey.IwantedtoWINjustlikethey did.
Ayearbeforethat,Howehiredanew assistantcoachnamedSteveSimmonswhoIclickedwithbecausewe bothsharedthesamebrandinginour brainof“enthusiasmiscontagious.” Themorehescreamed,themoreI screamed.Therewasnotamoment wherehedidn’tthinkwecouldlose–atleasthenevershowedthattomeat anytime.Therewasalsoayoung mannamedRobBoazwhoalso sharedthatpassionandenthusiasm andhelitafirewiththecrowdsboth homeandawaybywavinghistowel awaitingthekickofforkickoffreturn. Hewasa5footnothingkamikaze with100timesmoreenthusiasmthan fear.Hisplaywasinspirationaltome asbarelyateenager.Prettysoon,his momhadmadetowelsforevery playertowearandwave.

inmyeyes.ButIquicklygotoverit becausewewentthreeroundsdeep intheplayoffsandreachedthesame levelasthat1985teamthatfirstlit myfuseforhighschoolfootball. Afterthatyear,CoachFryarannouncedhewasleavingforJacksboro,anditbrokemyheart.Itfeltlike whatachildmustgothroughduring adivorceoftheirparents.Thequestionstomyself–“Iknowwelosta lotofseniors,butit’snotlikewe’re notanygood.Howcouldhejust leaveuslikethis?”Butmeanda fellowteammateofmine,JonNorwoodimmediatelyplannedamissiontotryandgetourpreviousassistantcoachJoeyMcQueenbackin HowewhohadlefttheseasonbeforeandtookBellsthreerounds deepintheplayoffsinhisfirstseasonasaheadcoach.Coach McQueenwasayoungerguy(still oldtous)andwassomeonewefelt comfortablewithandthathecould leadus.HedidcomebacktoHowe, butitwasanythingbutcomfortable. TheCoachMcQueenwehadasan assistantwasnotthesameguywho cameinasaheadcoach.Wehadlost agreatamountoftalentandwewere notnearlyasgoodarosteraswehad thepreviousyearandheknewthat hewouldhavetoforceustodo thingswedidn’twanttodoinorder toachievethethingswewantedto achieve.TherearedaysIhatedthe man.ButtherewasnotadayIdidn’t respecttheman.Hetoldusevery day,“Iloveeachandeveryoneof you.”Tome,thatwasweirdthata grownmanwouldtellmeheloved me.Wewerejustabunchoftypical dumbteenagers,butyoudon’tknow howimportantthosewordsareuntil youbecomeaparent.Lookingback,
itwasbecausehelovedusenoughto behardonusandgetustowherewe wantedtogowhetherweenjoyedthe difficultjourneyornot.Winningon Fridaynightisamagicalexperience withthenameofyourhometown stampedonthefrontofyourjersey andwhatseemslikethewholetown inthestandsrootingyouon.Iwish everyonecouldexperiencethat.Ialso knowofthebonditbringswhen you’repushingyourselftocomplete exhaustionknowingthatyourteammatesaredoingthesamething.In situationslikethis,youlearnata youngagehowtofightthroughinjuriesandillnessesbecauseforthefirst timeinyouryounglife,you’reapart ofsomethingmuchbiggerthanyourself.Idon’tlovehighschoolfootball becauseofthelightsandtheheadsets, butbecauseIknowthatinthetrenchesthereisabondtakingplacedown onthatfieldwhereyoungmenare learningthatnomatterhowbadthey feel,theymustgetbackupandgive fulleffortnotforthemselves,butfor theguynexttohim,orthecoachon thesidelinewhoknowshehasmore inhistankthatwhatheevenrealizes. Thisiswheretheathletesthatunderstandthisoftentimesbecomesomeof thegreatestemployeesandentrepreneursthatyouknow–becausethey knownothowtogiveupandknow nothowtoquit.CoachMcQueendid takeourdepletedrosterfullofguys thatweren’texpectedtoliveuptothe previousteamandsomehowgotus threeroundsdeepintheplayoffs.We hadalittlehelpfromanamazingdefenseandarunningbacknamedMichaelBaileywhotheVanAlstynePA announcerclaimed,“hadmovesbetter thanElvis.”Weonlyhadahandfulof coaches,butI’dstandthemtoe-to-toe withthebigstaffsoftoday.BillyHill
Ourworld,andespeciallytheworld onlineisoftennotsafeforkids.As manyknowandhaveunfortunately experienced–childrenandyoung adultscaneasilybegroomed,confused,misled,andpreyedupon.Fear ofjudgement,shame,dismissaletc. followingharmfuleventsoftencauses victimstoremainsilentandevenpossiblyshiftintomisplacedself-blame. Silenceofthosewhosufferatthe handsofvaryingtypesofabuse,leads oftenintoissueslateroninlife,includingsubstanceabuse,self-harm,depressionandevensometimessuicide.

Initially,in2018,Ididn’thaveany ambitionsforthiskindofthingbutI wasreadingTheHoweEnterprise andsawanarticlesayingthatthe Citywaslookingfortwopeoplein thecommunitytoserveonthePlanningandZoning(P&Z)Board.I didn’tknowwhatthatwassoI lookeditupandthensenttheMayor atthetimealittlebitaboutme.I thoughtthatmightbeawaytohelp serveinthecommunity.AfteraconversationwiththeMayorIwas nominatedforthepositionandgot ontheBoard.Afterservingonthe Boardforafewyears,therewasa spotfortheChairmanoftheP&Z Board,soIdecidedtogoforthat-I wasnominatedandvotedinanddid thatforabout2years.”Overall, WoodswasontheP&ZBoardfor7
yearspriortorunningforCity Council.

GeorgeEdwardChristopher,age79, passedawayonSunday,June22, 2025athishomeinHowe,Tx.He wasbornonSeptember15,1945,in Albany,Kentuckythenmovedto Howeasachild.Georgewasknown forhisdedicationtohardwork,love fortheoutdoorsandlivedalifefilled withsimplepleasuresandcherished momentswithhisfamilyandfriends.
Georgebeganhishardworkinglife aroundage18atOlsonBodiesin Sherman,Txasamachinist,before beginningalongcareerwithTexas Instrumentsin1967.Hecontinued withTIuntilhisdepartmentwasacquiredbyMEMC,whereheworked untilretiringin2001.Georgealways offeredahelpinghandtofamilyand friendswithhiselectrical,carpentry andplumbingskills.Hehelpedwith theadditiontoBethelBaptistChurch inHowe,wherehemadeaprofession offaithandwasbaptizedin1978.In hisyoungeryearshealsoworkedthe fieldsaroundHowehaulinghayand harvestingcrops.
Beyondwork,Georgefoundjoyand adventureintheoutdoors.Hewasan avidfishermanandhunter,spending countlesshoursboatingandcastinga lineatLakeTexoma,DenisonDam, orfishingprivatepondsandlakes aroundHowe.Hewasreadytohunt whateverseasonitwasandmayhave evenallowedhiskidstoskipschool onopeningdayofdoveseason.He workedinhisgardenaslongashis healthallowedandthefamilywill cherishthememoriesofeatinghis tomatoesrightoffthevine.
Whetheritwasacasualdinner,acelebrationwithfamilyoranightoutwith hisfriendsattheCowboyClub,he lovedlaughter,countrymusic,andthe camaraderiethatcamewithsharinga drinkandcreatinglastingmemories. Georgecouldbequiteastoryteller
andlovedto"pullyourleg."Hecould alsobealittleornery,pickyabouthis mealsanddemandingabouthisseat athisfavoritebar,sotheykepthis specificseatreservedjustforhim.So famouswas'George'sSpot'thatheis mentionedinthecountrysong "CowboyClub"recordedbyRobby White.
Ashishealthdeclined,Georgewas nolongerabletodosomeoftheactivitiesheloved,buthestillwasan avidfanofhisgrandkids.Inrecent years,hecherishedtimewatchingthe GunterTigersonFridaynights,cheeringthemonthroughmultipleState Championships.
Georgewasprecededindeathbyhis parents,EdwardandGeorgiaEstelle (Melton)Christopher,sisters,Patricia Christopher,VirginiaPeltonandgreat grandsonKnoxFloyd.

Ithinkitstartedwhenmysonturned 13andproudlyannouncedoneday thathecouldnowwatchanyPG-13 moviehewanted becausehewas “finallyoldenough.”Thethingwas, wehadyoungerkidsinthehouseand a“noTVinthebedroom”rule,so realistically,itwasn’tgoingtohappen anyway.
Okay,we’renotthatstrict.Ourkids watchedplentyofPG-13moviesbeforetheywere13.TheAvengersmoviesaresomeofourfavorites!What oursonreallymeantwasthathe thoughtheshouldnowbeallowedto watchhorrormovies whichwe don’tallowinourhome.Itoldhim, “Justbecauseyoucan,doesn’tmean youshould.”Herolledhiseyeswhile Iexplainedthatjustbecausewe’reold enoughormatureenoughtohandle somethingdoesn’tmeanweneedto invitedarknessintoourlives.
Thisweek,withtheongoingnews coveragesurroundingAndrewHarvey,thatsameprinciplecametomind again.Thereweregraphicdetails sharedthatmanyfelteveryoneneeded toread.Yes,they’republicrecords. Yes,they’relegallyavailableupon request.Butdidweneedtoexpose ourentiretown andespeciallyour youth tothosedetails?No.Iappreciatethosewhoofferedwarnings (includingthisverynewspaper),but
manyyoungpeoplestillsawandread thingsthey’llneverforget.Itfilledmy ownmindwithdisgustanddarkness, andhonestly,IwishIhadneverread it.
Weneedtoprotectourkids’innocenceforaslongaswecan.Willthey beexposedtothiskindoffiltheventually?Possibly.Willtheycomeacross mediathattaintstheirminds?Yes. Socialmediamakessureofthat.

Ourlatestwarstorybeginsonabaseballfieldmanyyearsago.The hometownninewasastate-ranked districttitlecontenderasalwaysand thevisitingteamwasnotasgoodas thehometeam,buttheywerehanging inthereliketribeofbatsinacavern waitingtotakeflight.
Asthegameprogressed,Ikeptnoticingahome-townspectatorstanding directlybehindmypartnerontheothersideofthebackstop,whowascallingagreatgameofballsandstrikes.
Thisgentlemanwasdisagreeingon eachclosepitchthatdidnotfavorthe localhurleronthemound.Hisbody languagecloselyresembledadisco dancerfromthe80’seachtimeaball wascalledorhewouldraisehisarms infutilitywhilefacingthelocalsupporters.
Thisfellahad2sonsplayingforthe locals.Onewaspitching(imagine that)andtheotherwasonfirst.Both boyswereverygoodplayersandboth werealsoverygoodkids tosaythe least,weknewtheterritorypretty well.
Thisgarbagecontinuedwellintothe latestanzasasthegamebecamemore intenseandmypatiencewiththe dancingdadwaswearingthin.
Asatimeoutwascalledwiththe hometeaminthefield,myposition
requiredmetobebehindthemound. Duringthetimeout,thepitcher reachedouttomeandstatedthathe wassorryabouthisdadactinglikea foolbehindthebackstop.Wellnow, thatwasalltheammoIneeded.
Onthenextgyrationbydad,I screamedloudenoughtorattlethe windowsintheStateCapitol.Isaid “Hey,Travolta Doyouknowyour sonisouthereapologizingforyour behavior?”
Thelocalfansandvisitorfansjust eruptedinlaughterasDiscoDadsat downwiththeburdenofhumilityon hisshoulders.
MaybeIwasalittleunprofessionalin myoutburst.MaybeIwasalittleout ofline.Butafterthegame,bothboys saidthankstome.
Iguessthebottomlineisthatnobody comestotheparktowatchtheofficialsandsurelynobodycomesto watchjerksinthebleachers.They cometowatchtheseyoungfolksdisplaytheirskillsonthefield.

thismeetingincludedGeorgeWashington,JohnandSamuelAdams,PatrickHenryandJohnJay.Thefirst meetingdidnotfocusonindependencefromGreatBritain,butinstead denouncednotaxationwithoutrepresentationandthecolonies’lackof consentregardingthemaintenanceof TheBritishArmy.TheyissuedaDeclarationofRightsduetoeverycitizen, includinglife,liberty,property,assemblyandtrialbyjury.Theyvotedto meetagaininMayof1775,butby thattimeviolencehadalreadybegan.
OnthenightofApril18,1775the BritishmilitaryheadedtowardConcord,Massachusettstoseizetherifles, artilleryandammunitionstoredbythe Massachusettsmilitia.PaulRevere andotherpatriotswhobecameaware ofthissoundedthealarm,ridinginto Concordandgivingthelocalmilitiamentheopportunitytomobilizeand intercepttheBritishmilitary.This clashbetweenpatriotsandtheBritish militaryledtotheBattlesofLexingtonandConcord,officiallybeginning theRevolutionaryWar.

OnJuly4th,theContinentalCongress formallyadoptedTheDeclarationof Independence,whichhadbeenmostly writtenbyThomasJefferson.Thevote forindependenceoccurredonJuly 2nd,buttheadoptionofTheDeclarationofIndependenceoccurredonJuly 4th,resultinginthecelebratedholiday today.

ScottJoplinwas anearlymusician whotransformed muchofthelandscapeofpopular musicintheearly 1900s. Though manydetailsofhisshortlifeareuncertain,hisimpactonearlyAmericanmusicisundeniable.
Joplinwasbornjustafterthe CivilWarin1867or1868possiblyin theEastTexascommunityofLinden ormaybeTexarkana,thoughevenhis placeofbirthisnotentirelycertain. Hisparentshadbeen slaves. Whenhewasyoung,thefamilymovedtonearbyTexarkanawhere hisfatherworkedontherailroadthat effectivelycreatedthecity. Hisparentswerebothtalentedmusicians, withhisfatherplayingthefiddleand hismotherplayingthebanjo. From there,Joplin'sloveofmusicgrew. As achild,helearnedpianoandclassical musicfromavarietyoftutorsinthe Texarkanaarea.
Hebrieflyworkedontherailroadlikehisfather,buthedecidedto tryhisluckasamusician. In1885,he leftTexarkana,travellingacrossthe countryandplayingpianoinbarsand housesofillreputeoranywherehe couldfindwork. Joplinalsoattended collegebrieflytofurtherstudymusic theoryandcomposition. Between 1895and1917,hepublishedmore than80songs,includingclassicalmusic,operas,andanewformofpopular music,ragtime.
Ragtimewasknownforits upbeattempo,oftenplayedonpiano oraccompaniedbyfiddles,banjos,or trumpets. Musichistoriansconsiderit tobeanearlyforerunnerofjazzand blues,bothdevelopedintheDeep South,whichwouldbecomeincreasinglypopularbythe1920s,withrock androllbranchingofffrombluesby the1950s. Joplintiedthisnew "ragtime"musicinwithclassicalmusicaltheorywithfarlessimprovisation andturneditintoanartform. Bythe mid-1890s,hewastouringwithhis owngroup,theTexasMedleyQuartet. Hisbandperformedatthe1893 ChicagoWorld’sFairtowideacclaim. Joplin'sbiographerscredithis performanceswithspreadingthepopularityofragtimeacrossthecountry. In1899,the Maple Leaf Rag, was publishedandbecamethemostpopularsheetmusicsoldthatyear.
HemovedtoSt.Louisin1900 withhisnewwife,BelleJones,where heconcentratedonteachingandcomposing. However,astringoftragedies begantounravelhislife. Aninfant daughterdiednotlongafterhisarrival inSt.Louis,andheandhiswifedivorced. Shediednotlongafterward. Inthemeantime,oneofhisoperas, The Guest of Honor(1903),was afailure. HissecondmarriagetoFreddieAlexanderofLittleRockended whenshediedjusttenweeksafter their1904wedding.
JoplinmovedtoNewYorkin 1907andremarriedtwoyearslater. In 1910,hecompletedhisnext opera. Treemonisha wassetinRondo, justeastofTexarkana,inthe1880s. In thestory,ayoungwomanonaplantationlearnstoreadandwriteanddis-
coversthateducationisadefense againstfearandsuperstitionthatcrippledhercommunity. Crushedbypoor receptionofhisopera,bankrupt,and hisphysicalhealthcollapsing,hehada nervousbreakdownandwascommittedtoahospitalinearly1917. Hedied threemonthslater,notyetfiftyyears old.
AfterJoplin’spassing,hisinfluenceonlygrew. Manymusicianscontinuedtoimitatehisstyle,andragtime musicremainedextremelypopular, ultimatelyinspiringthegenreofjazz bythe1920sandeventhebigband musicofthe1930sand 1940s. His Maple Leaf Rag wasused oftenforthesoundtracksofseveral moviesmadeinthe1920sand1930s. Bythe1970s,hismusicwasrediscovered. In1973,composer MarvinHamlischadaptedJoplin’s popularsongfrom1902, The Entertainer, forthemusicalscoreforthe film The Sting, whichstarredRobert RedfordandPaulNewman. Thenext year,Joplinwasawardedaspecial posthumousAcademyAwardforBest Song Portionsof Treemonisha also begantobeperformedforaudiencesin the1970s.
In1976,hewasawardedanhonoraryPulitzerPrizeforhiscontribution toAmericanmusic. Joplin’smusic cametoembodytheearlytwentieth centuryformanyAmericansasthey lookedbacktotheseeminglysimpler timesofnearlyacenturybefore. Overall,thenationagaincameto appreciatetheunheraldedartisticgeniusofScottJoplin,themanwhoinspiredsomuchofthemusicthat Americahasenjoyedthroughthe years.
Celebrating Independence Dayisalways ahighlightof thesummer season.Itis trulyatimeof celebrationas wearethankfulforthedecisionsthat weremadeby Congressand thecourage andfaiththesemenpresentedasthey declaredtotheworldtheUnitedStates wantedthefreedomtobecomeasovereignnation.Whentheinitial battlesintheRevolutionaryWarbroke outinApril1775,fewcolonistsdesiredcompleteindependencefrom GreatBritain,andthosewhodidwere consideredradical.Bythemiddleof thefollowingyear,however,many morecolonistshadcometofavorindependence,thankstogrowinghostility againstBritainandthespreadof revolutionarysentimentssuchasthose expressedinthebestsellingpamphlet “CommonSense”publishedby ThomasPaineinearly1776.

Werealizethatmanypeoplearemore caughtupinthefestivitiesofcookouts,andfireworksfortheoccasion andofcourse,thisyeartheFederal holidayfallsonFridayandisafun timetoenjoyathree-dayweekend.I justwanttoaddthatwhileweareappreciatingthiswonderfulblessing fromGod,itwouldbegoodtokeep thisnationinourprayers.Alotisgoing oninourcountryrightnowandmuch ofitisassociatedwithhatred, rebellion,anddisagreement.Idonot wanttogetintoallthedetails,butI’m sureyouknowwhatI’mreferringto. Irealizetherehasalwaysbeendifferingsideswhenitcomestopolitics,and thedividinglineofhostilityhas neverbeenmoreclear,asweseestate andfederaljudgeswhoareopposing mosteverythingthatournew administrationistryingtodo.
Thereisalsoanotherannualeventthat isimportantespeciallyforthosewho considerthemselvestoembracethe
Christianfaith,butthereisagood chanceyouwillnothearmuchabout it.ThisyeartheUnitedStateswill celebratethe70thofficialanniversary of“InGodWeTrust”asourNational mottoestablishedwasalawpassed bytheeighty-fourthcongressandapprovedbyPresidentDwightD.EisenhoweronJuly30,1956.Forthosewho arefollowersofChrist,weareconfidentthisdeclarationoriginatesfrom theBiblewithpassagessuchasPsalm chapter16andverse1thatsays, “Preserveme,OGod:forinTheedoI putmytrust.”AsChristianswebelieve whenGodsaidthatvengeanceisHis judgment,aswefightevilonourknees inprayeranddependonHispower toaccomplishHiswill.
Isaiahchapter5usesapropheticoracle deliveredthroughthemetaphorofa vineyardtodescribeatimewhen Israelbecamerebellious.God,the ownerofthevineyard(representing Israel),isdisappointedbecausehis vineyardproducedwildgrapesinstead oftheexpectedgoodfruit.ThissymbolizestheIsraelites’failuretolive uptotheircovenantwithGod,characterizedbyinjustice,greed,andadisregardforGod’slaw.Thechapter includesaseriesof“woes,”whichare pronouncementsofjudgmentagainst specificsins,andultimately foreshadowsGod’sjudgmentandthe consequencesoftheiractions.Oneof thesinswenoticeinverses20-21 wasbeingconfusedastowhatisright andwrong.“Woeuntothemthatcall evilgood,andgoodevil;thatput darknessforlight,andlightfordarkness;thatputbitterforsweet,and sweetforbitter.Woeuntothemthatare wiseintheirowneyes,andprudentin theirownsight.”Ourfreedomisnotso wecandowhateverwewant.We arefreetoserveandworshipGod.The worldwantsnorulesorlaws,but God’speoplearefocusedonRomans 12:9,“Letlovebegenuine.Abhor whatisevil;holdfasttowhatisgood.”
