Afterhisreturntocivilianlife, heresumedhisnewspaperwork. In 1870,Johnstonmovedtothebusyport cityofSavannahandbecamethecity editorfortheSavannahMorning News. In1878,Johnstonmoved toTexasandsecuredapositionaseditorofthesmallCrockettPatron. His skillswereindemand, andhemoved toCorsicanathenextyeartoserveas editoroftheCorsicanaObserver. He soonbranchedoutandstartedhisown paper, theIndependent. In1880,he movedtoAustin, wherehesecureda positionwiththeAustinStatesman.

MeanwhileinHouston,a groupofinvestorswereattemptingto revivetheshortlivedHoustonPost. Johnstonhadalreadyestablishedagreatreputation amongTexasjournalists, andhewas hiredaseditorwhenitrestartedin 1885. ThePostsoonbecameoneof themostimportantpapersinthestate, mostlybecauseofJohnston’swriting andmanagementofhisnewsroom. Johnston’seditorialswereroutinelyruninpapersacrossthenation andquotedbypoliticiansandbusinessmen. Heoftenwroteimpassioned defensesofthefreedomofspeechand freedomofthepressaswellasopinionsofcurrentevents. In1898,Texas Democratsofferedtonominatehim

forlieutenantgovernor,buthedeclined.

InSeptember1912,Sen.Joe BaileyofGainesville,woundedby accusationsofcorruption,announced hisresignationfromtheSenate,effectiveJanuary3,1913. Gov.Oscar ColquittappointedJohnstontofillout theremainderoftheterm,eventhough itwouldbeonlyafew weeks. Johnstonacceptedandheaded toWashington. Therewasverylittle activityintheSenate,andJohnston’s termwaslargelyuneventful. HisserviceendedonJanuary29,replacedbythenewly-electedMorris SheppardofTexarkana,apopularcongressmanwhowouldserve28yearsin theU.S.Senate.

Johnston’s25daysintheSenatewas almosttheshortesttenureof anySenatoruptothattime,certainly ofanyTexan. However,onJanuary3, Sen.JeffDavisofArkansasdiedsuddenly. Nottobeoutdone(orunderdone),JohnHeiskellwasappointedby theArkansasgovernortofillthepositiononJanuary6. Heiskell,aninfluentialnewspapereditorlikeJohnston, alsoendedhisserviceonJanuary29, givinghim23daysintheSenate. Bothmen,however,farexceeded theultimaterecord-holderontheshortestterm:the87-year-oldSen.Rebecca LatimerFeltonofGeorgiawhoserved onlyonedayinNovember1922,becomingthefirstwomantoserveinthe Senateandtheoldestpersoneverappointedtotheposition.

Johnstonwasnotcontentexit politicsentirely. In1916,hewaselectedtotheTexasStateSenate,representingHarrisCounty. Hewaselectedas presidentprotemporeoftheSenatein 1918,thehighest-rankingmemberof thelegislativebody,secondonlytothe lieutenantgovernor. Hefullyretired fromTheHoustonPostin1919,andin 1920,Gov.WilliamP.HobbyappointedhimtoserveasheadoftheTexas PrisonCommission. Hecontinuedto serveuntilhisdeathinFebruary1926.

Decadeslater, theHouston MuseumofFineArtsnamedoneofits buildingsafter him. TheHoustonPost, however, fell victimtothefiercecompetitionof theHoustonChronicleandclosedin 1995.
