PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

IN THIS ISSUE

T

he latest news can at times be tough to read, with concerns about supply chain disruption, inflation, the brain-drain as well as any number of geo-political situations going on around the world. I did take time to reflect recently that despite this, there is plenty to be positive about, particularly in the country and our industry. The significant pipeline of work ahead in the construction and infrastructure sectors is undeniable, providing some certainty to the parts of the economy that hire businesses are commonly aligned to. Whilst supply-side constraints are forcing hire companies to commit to replacement fleet earlier than they are used to, these same factors are also driving solid demand for many. It is not lost on members that I have recently spoken to, that the relatively high utilisation levels they are experiencing is in part due to those same long lead times and the increasing costs of capital equipment. Whilst there is some pain associated with increasing costs for business in today’s inflationary environment it does also make existing hire fleet more valuable. Replacing team members when they leave has been a concern for many in these times of very high employment. Most accept the Kiwi tradition of leaving for a period to explore other parts of the world, and that right now there is some pent up demand for this type of travel. We may well lose a few overseas, but that has always happened. I have been impressed with a number of hire businesses visited recently to see those relatively new to the industry stepping up and taking on roles and responsibility early in their

careers. That is perhaps one silver-lining for those entering our industry – the opportunities for advancement are certainly there. The growth of various platforms and apps setting up to be part of the “sharing economy” has been apparent over the last few years. When it comes to equipment, I contend that the hire industry already provides a perfectly fit for purpose platform, via the network of HIANZ members. Levels of compliance, safety and quality are world class, with a number of our members now also offering the ability to book online and in real time. There are of course some real challenges to being in business right now, however as an industry, we are a resilient and innovative lot and should remain upbeat about the next year in business. Even our Party and Events members have reason for optimism as larger events are now being confirmed as they look forward to a busy season ahead. Coverage from overseas shows that even the largest and most iconic events are now able to take place. The combined conference with Civil Contractors NZ in August will provide a perfect opportunity to reconnect with friends, suppliers and this time with customers at the new Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre. The month of August is chosen for conference as it is fits into a slightly less hectic time at work for many. I encourage you to attend, and make the most of the educational and networking opportunities on offer. It might also be a good time to get into the mountains, or the other scenic attractions on offer in the beautiful South Island. ■ Take care

HIANZ CEO DIARY

It’s been two years since my very first article in the Hire and Rental Magazine. What a crazy, unprecedented period it has been for us all.

W

e don’t need a re-cap; there’s plenty scars and reminders of this last period that we can all see on a daily basis. Together I want to look forward and to create a plan of how we are going to build on our current position using the learnings from experiences had. What is it we need to do to be ready for the next big thing in our business lives? Here’s some of my thoughts on it all: Technology This has become an especially important part of our business lives. Yes, we all kind of dabbled in it prior to March 2020, but now, we are better prepared for the technological age. “Death by Zoom” is a common saying for your calendars and we have become quite competent in its operation. Common conversations when deciding to meet with someone involve things like what platform to use and the +’s or – ‘s of each one. I personally had never heard of “Zoom” before then and had seen the “Teams” icon but didn’t think it was for me. I was with a member the other day and they were showing me how they are transacting now at the counter and over the phone for bookings. Everything is electronic and although the big one page per day diary still sits on the counter, it was more a reminder to add items into the electronic calendar than it was for bookings. Customers signing on a tablet now get photographs of gear loaded onto the contract, delivery driver tablet showing them the best way to get to site and instant updates on pick ups popping up on their screen whilst they are out and about. Bloody clever, a long way from the dirt floor days and old notes on the back of a Winfield Red packet. If your business is not yet into the technological era, you are getting left behind. You need to seriously consider investing into this area of your company. It’s also not just capital outlay either, it requires constant improving and developing.

PAGE 6

- HIANZ HIRE & RENTAL 2022

Technology moves so much quicker these days; the ROI is exceedingly difficult to measure and achieve. You have to be constantly funding improvements or changes so that you don’t become out of touch. Have a chat with your accountant as there are ways to reduce tax and affects on the balance sheet with both capital and improvements. Supply Chain Issues Our supplier members have seen massive swings in the way their businesses operate. Previously, they would be out there working hard to find a sale for a stock item in order to clear room for the next consignment from the factory. Nowadays, they are taking orders for well into the future, with the issue now being not having the stock to meet the current demand. The economic boom is causing problems with factories only back to 80% of their Pre- Covid production capacity. And then there is the issues around international shipping affecting delays in delivery of that stock. It must be so hard to keep up with it all, especially when you are placing orders with overseas factories. By the time you receive it, the company has released a new model, superseding your current product. Then, let’s not even start on getting spares on some gear. All of this is affecting productivity and driving lost hire days through the roof. Your decision making on renewal or expansion of plant, needs to move further forward and in some cases into two financial periods in advance, not just your current one. I was working with a client once and we went though his plant list, looking at age/hours, productivity, R&M, and the future direction of his business. We sorted the list by replacement priority, then by change in direction. From there we were able to financially plan for the new capital expenditure and disposal options. That spreadsheet is still alive today and is constantly updated allowing the business owner to forecast where best to put his

Capex to match his evolving business. This was a small drain laying company that had only been going 3 years and had got the wobbles. They are now in a far better position, growing sustainably and creating excellent returns. The same principles can/should be adopted into your hire business. Where is your marketing moving to? What are the trends developing? How long does it take to gear up for those changes, what’s it going to cost, how do you fund it and what’s the return going to be like? Staff I have always struggled with the mentality of staff being an expense. Yes, the cost of staff sits as an expense line item/s on your P&L, however, they are really a cost of a sale. They create the value of the sale to the client. They are as the trendy speakers and promoters of business improvement products say, “The biggest asset in your business.” Either way you look or perceive staff, they are an integral part of your company. This last period of time has shown us their greatest worth, risk, and consideration. Who would have thought for a moment that we would be paying staff NOT to come to work? Who would have ever believed the government would fund you to not have your staff at work? Bloody crazy. Here we are, looking at our businesses and saying, “When the business is open, I need the staff to be working.” Easier said than done at the best of times when you consider that they may need to occasionally isolate and may even leave which means you are always on the lookout for good replacements. Skilled or not. Don’t even get me started on the minimum wage now being $21.20! The pressures of having people to work with you in your business has never been greater. I know a lot of you are looking for ideas and support on this matter. HIANZ has just released a foundation training course for the Party and Events sector. It is an online course that gives a complete newbie to

HIANZ CEO DIARY

If you are not into a technological era in your business, you are getting left behind. marquee rigging, the basic understanding of what to expect. It covers H&S, what they need to bring with them to work each day, terminology, description of items and what to expect when helping erect a marquee. We are working on content for general hire staff induction and are building courses that will create a development pathway in the role of a “Hire Controller.” This is a term the UK are using, and Australia are starting to adopt the terminology also. The UK have got it across the line as a recognised qualification. Something to aspire to. Furthermore, we are partnering up with others on providing administrative, sales and management professional development courses. All of this is about helping you train and retain valuable team members. Training helps with retention as it shows you are willing to invest in their development and provide them with something more than just a few extra

$$ in their pay packet. You win too as your team develops and adds extra value to every hire. I want to go even further on the training front. I want to see us put together an Owners Training programme. Something similar to the Institute of Directors courses but focussing on the hire industry. I see it helping existing members get a better understanding of their business, how to set some goals, plan for growth, succession and so on. This type of course would be great for not only those who are thinking of getting into the hire game but also as a first step for a staff member who may be looking at the opportunity of purchasing an existing business. Giving them the tools to understand ownership and the value of running a hire company would be a good starting point. I will be interested in your thoughts on this in the coming months. So, when I look back at what I have just written it is clear that we’re all basically trying to achieve the same

things. As an association we have become technically much smarter with our websites, database management and webstore content. We are also carrying more stock, looking at other value-added supporting products and training to be better at what we do. For instance Kylene is currently doing a social media course, John is getting auditor development training and I, well I am getting coached on better speaking, lobbying, and getting our industry story heard and respected. All great stuff that adds value to your membership of the Association and provides support to your business. It shows we have adapted and are working to the new norm. In a nutshell that means being, flexible, to expect the unexpected and to lift our capabilities. In my mind this sets us up for a positive future and reduces the impacts of any risk. Hopefully, this finds you in the same mindset. ■ Good chat…

2022 CONFERENCE

THE 2022 CONFERENCE IS NEARLY HERE!

I

t is well documented that this year’s conference will be held in conjunction with the Civil Contractors of NZ. We believe this will provide greater opportunities for our members whilst retaining the essence of a HIANZ conference experience. Here’s 4 good reason why we believe that in 2022 this one will be the most successful yet. 1. Civil Contractors are one of the biggest customer groups for hire companies. They can, and do hire almost every type of item you have in the yard or on the shelf. They even extend into marquee hire and portable toilets/ temp fencing. This isn’t just for the big hire companies, it’s also a fantastic opportunity for small hire business owners to come along with their local contractor to enjoy a mutually satisfying experience. 2. CCNZ members are very practical, well-paid people and hire a lot of equipment for personal use as well.

PAGE 8

- HIANZ HIRE & RENTAL 2022

These 2 reasons alone show that as an industry, we need to get and keep close to this market segment. Networking, partying, and sharing stories is an excellent relationship building strategy. The opportunity to conference with this customer base should not be underestimated. To be able to hear the same presentations, be involved in the same

business workshops and network with others, will create further business opportunities. 3. Our supplier network exhibit every year at our conference and then at the Civil Contractors conference. In previous years, these conferences have been close together in time but not geographically. This makes it difficult to manage time and

2022 CONFERENCE

Conference registrations are open, so please sign up and get along, learn, network, and socialise. Get on the phone now to your local contractors and get them to come along with you. I really am looking forward to sharing this experience with you and showing you the true value of the association. ■

resources, with large costs. This year we save a huge amount of money by being together at the same time. Our exhibition hall is now fully sold out, and we are considering opening up further areas to maximise opportunities for our supplier members. How great is it to see the same gear your clients are looking at and even having conversations with them about making it available for hire. 4. TePae Christchurch Convention Centre is the newest conference venue operating in NZ currently. This is a uniquely, impressive venue, situated as close to the middle of Christchurch as you can get without displacing the Cathedral. It’s massive and can accommodate a huge number of people. On its own HIANZ, could never afford to use this venue or fill most of the space. But, by partnering with CCNZ we get the chance to fully experience it. These reasons should be enough to excite you but if you’re not yet convinced, hang on to your hat, because it gets better: We have listened to feedback from last year and have worked hard to plan and implement a conference programme full of interesting and relevant sessions to help you in your day-to-day business life. You can find the full programme on our conference website, with enough detail to allow you to understand the subject matter. At the beginning of the conference, we have 3 “Masterclasses”. These are educational, business improvement related classes, where experts present ways to help you in your business. We have a couple of great speakers, ‘Seven Sharp’ host Hilary Barry is our MC and our range of 25 minute breakout sessions will give you even more business insights.

Did I say party? For some of us, networking and socialising is the biggest reason and the most fun part of the conference. This is where we enjoy each other’s company, bury some hatchets, and sink a few drinks (in a responsible manner). Last year we even had Rugby lineout lifting plays as part of our socialising experience! This year, the dress up theme is ‘Steam Punk Masquerade.’ Weird and crazy you say, and yes it will be very scary to see the creative juices flowing and how risqué it gets to win the prize. I look forward to the evening and I challenge you to try and get funkier than me! The HIANZ Hire Excellence Awards night is on the final night and is this is what it’s all about. We will start out having shared pre dinner drinks with the Civil Contractors but then separate to our own Awards Dinner. We‘ve had a substantial change up to the awards system this year and it seems a few of you are still hesitant to enter, possibly because of time constraints or fear of not hitting the mark. I want to assure you, under the new system, its about promoting what you are doing great and celebrating that. If you have one area at least you think you are good at, enter just that. All we need is a few words on how good you are. ■

SILVERCARD AND OTHER MATTERS I have observed the following trends when conducting the audits. • Our members are doing a great job out there. In a way it feels that for the most part, I am merely collecting evidence that our members are operating to a compliant level. In fact, many of our members are well positioned to achieve Best Practice levels with minor tweaks to their systems and/ or processes. Bear in mind that Best Practice is above and beyond a compliant level of operation. • You don’t have to be a big organization to be a good one. Effective Workplace Health and Safety Systems are scalable to the size of the operation or PCBU. Some of our members who are operating smaller business are doing as well if not better than some of the larger players out there.

• We have some extremely talented and experienced Marquee Riggers within our ranks. I have been nothing short of impressed by the skills, knowledge and customer service being delivered by all the teams I have observed erecting Marquees. The willingness to share their knowledge and experience has been impressive with some teaching me a few tricks of the trade along the way. It would be an understatement to say that 2022 has been a challenging year for us all. Rest assured knowing that we have been manning the pumps and are still working towards all the goals that we set out to achieve at the beginning of the year. If I am honest...Rodney has snuck a few extras in! ■ See you all at conference, JH

COVER STORY

INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY THE KEY TO ALMAC’S SUCCESS The emergence of the Almac patented Bi-Levelling Platform system has offered a solution to the problem of steep lateral and longitudinal slopes. This resulted in a wave of innovation and diversification across the aerial platform sector generating significant attention particularly throughout the hire industry and its end users.

N

ew Zealand distributor, Youngman Richardson offers a wide range of Almac tracked scissor lifts, booms and spider lifts designed for use in many areas including construction, landscaping, building and maintenance. “All the machines offered are AS/NZS 1418.10 certified and equipped with cutting edge and unique technology which makes them perfect for a wide range of applications,” says Youngman Richardson Sales Director, Phil Fairfield. “Italian quality Almac tracked access equipment has been a welcome addition to our access equipment range,” says Phil. “With constant research into new technologies and new functions we are in no doubt that these innovative high-performance machines are quite clearly market leaders.” Leading the range are the Almac 870-BL-EVO and 1090-BL-EVO self-levelling tracked Scissor Lifts which cater for different work situations where it can adapt from very narrow environmental applications to difficult or uneven terrain uses. A major benefit is that the machine will be safe no matter whether it is moving at height or stationary meaning that the operator can get on with the job and not have to worry about anything else.

With a powerful Kubota diesel engine, the Almac 870-BL-EVO and 1090-BL-EVO scissor lifts have many other features including being able to work up to 7.9 and 10 metres high respectively. There is also a considerable increase in platform size with a 2-man basket (250/300kg capacity) and the ability to extend it to provide additional horizontal reach and extra room for tools and materials. In the case of the 870-BL-EVO it is 400mm wider than the similar 850-BL-EVO model. As well as being diesel-powered these Almac scissor lift models come with an electric option.

topped by a articulate jib to offer a working height of 12.2 and 16 metres respectively.

Coming soon to the line-up are the BT Line of Almac self-levelling tracked Spider Lifts. Combining the characteristics of a self-propelled, wheeled aerial platform with a stabilised tracked aerial platform these machines can reach heights of between 15-18 metres. They are available in two different types of automatic stabilisation, fixed-visual or variable but are also safe to use without stabilisers at a height of 8-9 metres depending on the model. Automatic tensioning of the track provides the big benefit of zero maintenance.

A remote-controlled Multi-Loader tracked platform complements the range of Almac products. There are two models of Multi-Loader which has a flat deck platform with either 2.5 or 6.0 Tonne capacity (depending on the model) and independently bi-levelling tracks which can be used in a variety of indoor or outdoor heavy duty applications. ■

The Almac Jibbi 1250-EVO and 1670EVO self-propelled/self-levelling telescopic crawler cranes feature a three-section telescopic boom

Both machines incorporate automatic dynamic ‘Pro-Active’ bi-levelling, allowing the machine to drive at height on slopes or undulating ground. With a variable outreach ranging from 6.5m to 8.2m for the 1250-EVO and 6.7m to 8.5m for the 1670-EVO together with compact 2-person basket and 80-230kg capacity, the Almac telescopic crawler crane is a versatile machine that can be used for a variety of circumstances and conditions.

DANGEROUS GOODS

HAZARDOUS GOODS: COMPLIANCE OR COMPLACENCY?

S

tart a conversation with Hirepool’s Environment, Health and Safety Manager Mags Rimmer and you’ll soon be impressed. “It’s a challenging subject to get your head around,” says Rimmer. “The regulations are written for regulators, not for the hazardous goods user or handler. Many of them are difficult to interpret and implement. It can be frustrating!” Indeed there is a continuum of confusion between what is termed Hazardous Substances versus Dangerous Goods. Worksafe NZ denotes a hazardous substance as a product or chemical that is explosive, flammable, oxidising, toxic, corrosive or toxic to the environment. Many of the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017 are still misunderstood. “Dangerous Goods is a term used in transport. This causes overlapping requirements with two different regulators: workplaces frequently mix the two terms up which just adds to the confusion”.

“The second major source of frustration is that so many common household products are hazardous. It detracts from the potential risk and potential harm they might cause if used incorrectly. Familiarity within the home environment has made us complacent,” says Rimmer. “I’m worried that as an industry we might have dropped the ball in some areas,” says Hirepool Chief Operating Officer and HIANZ President Ant Smit. “We’ve spent two years trying to mitigate the risk of Covid and maybe took our eyes off other areas such as Hazardous Goods,” he says. Although comprehensive training in Hazardous Goods handling and management is mandatory for all Hirepool employees, Rimmer knows she’s going to be busy over the next few months. “We have great systems in place at Hirepool. Now it’s a matter of making sure our team understand the risks and how they need to manage them”. When asked about the key pillars of any Hazardous Goods Management Plan, Rimmer is quick to respond.

“A comprehensive site plan, security, correct packaging & labelling, emergency planning and Training. Especially training. We have moved from approved handlers to an all-staff training and competency model. Any employee who might have to pick up a can of petrol or use industrial cleaning products need to be trained and assessed as competent, to ensure they are used and handled safely”. ‘’I think all hire companies need to be vigilant around the potential ways customers or staff might get harmed and ensure they take the necessary steps to prevent that harm. It is therefore important that the training staff receive matches what they are doing with the substance, whether that is simply offering it for retail or using it in their work activities. They have to be prepared to answer any questions customers may have so again access to current Safety Data Sheets and having them available to customers is a ‘must do’. Establish a good working relationship with your test certifier as they will be able to guide you through the minefield of requirements.” ■

SILK ESTATE SHOWS THE WAY Silk Estate provides the complete event solution; from the silk-lined, clear marquees through to final flourishes, and everything in between

A

t Silk Estate Marquee Weddings, creating memorable family celebrations has been the key driver over the last decade for owner, Toni May. During those years Toni and her specialist team have successfully managed hundreds of marquee installations throughout the wider Canterbury region. Some have been at the most remote and picturesque locations, transforming the natural setting into a unique venue for very special occasions. The business has outgrown several rented premises, and, in the spring of 2020, the entire operation was moved to a custom-designed building on the outskirts of Ashburton. Early Days Toni worked alongside her husband, Peter May in their canvas fabrication business. About 12 years ago, Peter was asked to manufacture small marquees for the local A&P shows and then larger marquees, for family events being held at the homes of their rural clients. It was from these beginnings that the concept of Silk Estate started to take shape, with Toni stepping into the marquee business full-time, while Peter remained focused on the canvas fabrication business. With requests for more and larger marquees, Peter and Toni engaged

with Tauranga based Baytex to custom manufacture marquees to meet client needs. Unique Additions Toni has a keen eye for detail and demands the highest of standards. Initially, all the styling and décor for the interiors of the marquees were hired-in but were of variable quality, much to Toni’s disappointment. She gradually purchased Silk Estate’s own higher-quality equipment, commissioned a luxury loo and adapted the marquees to enable full wood ‘hocker’ system flooring to be integrated. The flooring system involves positioning polished floorboards on bearers, providing the ultimate experience for guests. Heavy Lifting It certainly hasn’t been all fairy lights and flowing silks for Toni though. As one of few women in the industry she has brought a fresh approach to doing things more efficiently and reducing the heavy lifting. For Toni and her team, palletising event items is vital for seamless installs and break-downs of the marquees. “We’ve got to get everything in and out of the trucks easily, so having them on pallets helps enormously”, says Toni. “Several years ago, I had quite a

challenge obtaining an innovative piece of hydraulic equipment from the United States. The manufacturer was very unsure a ‘women’ was the right person to even discuss the prospective sale. Plus, they didn’t sell outside of the States. However, with some considerable persuasion they did ship the equipment to us - their first export out of the US!”, says Toni. Another efficiency has resulted from going through the APEX Marquee & Accreditation process. Although still in the provisional stage of the accreditation process, it has helped considerably when dealing with different councils. Bright Future The future is looking bright for Silk Estate, despite the challenges the pandemic brought on the events sector. Initially, many weddings were postponed but more recently bridal organisers adapted to smaller weddings. Silk Estate marquees have also supported local, export-oriented businesses, to enable staff spacing for social distancing purposes, a crucial requirement imposed by the destination country. As restrictions ease and the opening of the border will allow family and friends to attend events, the future is looking very bright for Silk Estate. ■ HIANZ HIRE & RENTAL 2022 -

JLG INDUSTRIES LAUNCH ‘SERVICE PLUS’ INITIATIVE JLG Industries has unveiled its latest customer support initiative, ‘Service Plus’ which offers JLG equipment users and owners, a smarter way to maintain their machines, no matter what size fleet they have

A

vailable as part of JLG’s broad suit of aftersales services accessible under ‘Ground Support’, which is best described as providing “everything you need to stay in the air,” Service Plus offers a choice of two plans, allowing operators to select the one that most closely meets their needs. A key benefit of Service Plus is that it provides a known, monthly fixed price for servicing and maintenance of equipment, providing greater budgetary control and minimising the risk of any surprises at the time of servicing. A regular service plan such as those offered under Service Plus, also provides long term savings and minimises the risk of costly downtime by pre-empting any possible issues with the equipment. Additionally, Service Plus ensures all machines are regularly checked and comply with Australian Standards and job site requirements, ensuring the safety of operators and other people on site. JLG Industries (Australia) Ryan Pragnell, said the Service Plus program was the latest in a long list of aftersales services the company had developed, designed to make ownership of JLG equipment as efficient, hassle-free, and enjoyable as possible.

“Having a superior product line-up is just one component of the overall JLG experience,” Ryan said. “While we’re certainly very proud of what we offer on the product front, JLG’s aftersales suite of services is another important differentiator for the business, and the breadth of what we offer is really appreciated by our customers “Service Plus is our latest initiative and was developed to allow our owners to concentrate on their core business, while entrusting the servicing and maintenance of their equipment to JLG. This not only means that every box is ticked in terms of what’s required for the ongoing performance of the machine, it also ensures that applicable compliance standards are met, while providing full pricing transparency with fixed known costs.” Available for either three- or five-year durations, the two Service Plus by JLG plans are: Service Plus - Preventative Frequent and annual inspections. This service is available for machines of any age.

coverage for breakdowns, repairs or parts (some conditions apply). Comprehensive is limited to machines that are up to 12 months old from the date of commission. Service Plus at-a-glance benefits • Known and fixed service costs • Maintenance to exacting OEM standards • The use of genuine OEM parts • Servicing by factory-trained technicians • Provides full-service history for equipment • Offers improved resale value • Provides improved ROI • Increases budgetary capability Service Plus is currently only available in metropolitan areas, but however JLG Industries can cater to customers in other markets or regional areas with Fixed Price Service Plans, which are also part of the overall Ground Support offering. ■ For further information contact us on 0800 4 JLGNZ

ASSOCIATION NEWS

ASSOCIATION PRINCIPAL SPONSOR ANNOUNCED

H

IANZ recently invited all their Associate Suppliers to ‘throw their hat in the ring’ to become our Principal Sponsor for the next three calendar years. This prestigious appointment isn’t all about a financial commitment, it’s also about working in partnership with the association as we jointly strengthen our ties promoting HIANZ as an association of likeminded people to all prospective members. So, in order to find the best fit for both us and a supplier willing to take up the position of Principal Sponsor, we asked interested parties to submit a proposal on the things that as an association we need to receive from the relationship. These were: • The promotion of our industry to the wider market, specifically HIANZ members. • The Promotion of membership to the association of businesses involved in hire. • Advertising and advertorial contributions to our Association magazine. • Training for Association members on products and processes adopted

• • • •

and aligned to our good practices and standards Providing support towards industry wide technical and/or safety improvement initiatives the Association may initiate or be involved in. Financial contribution to HIANZ events and conferences. Adding value to our members subscription to the Association. Allowing us to provide added services to the Association members. It’s not all about the money, it’s the full encompassing solution to promote the Association to our members, other hire companies, and the wider commercial market.

The concept is to be at the forefront of support to the Association and our membership base. Adding tangible value to the membership will be vitally important. Over the past years, Youngman Richardson have fulfilled this role impeccably and after evaluating all our options we see it fit to continue the relationship with them. Talking with Ed and Phil about the opportunity to continue our relationship, Phil said “We hope that over

the past four years we have demonstrated our ability and commitment to consistently deliver the value and support sought by HIANZ.” Ed added “Our overall approach will continue to be a collaborative one with a focus on building an even stronger relationship as we jointly navigate business challenges and opportunities unique to the Hire Industry.” We couldn’t agree more, Youngman Richardson has proven to be more than financially supportive of the association. We constantly use their premises for meetings and training. Even our members agree they are a very accommodating supplier, with Josiah at NZ Machine Hire saying, “We have had nothing but positive experiences with YR and look forward to a continued business relationship.” We congratulate and thank Youngman Richardson on their appointment as HIANZ Principal Sponsor we also thank Ed, Phil, and the whole team at YR for their continued support of the Association. Thank them yourselves, by supporting them too! ■

CENTRAL GROUP LOOKING AT A BRIGHT FUTURE IN ELECTRIC MACHINERY Over the last few years, we’ve been seeing an increasing number of companies looking to reduce their carbon footprint, reduce their operational costs and make efforts to improve working environments for their staff and employees.

T

hese are three leading factors when it came to our choice to invest in lithium-ion and battery electric machinery technology. With customers in forklifts and material handling already in a position to choose from many options, we are looking forward to what the next generation of this means for the light commercial and construction industry. With Wacker Neuson and Takeuchi making some inroads with this gear and Heli forklifts already well established on their path to supply, providing parts, and sharing information to keep this gear well maintained, it’s an interesting space to keep an eye on. The team have been getting great feedback on the lithium-ion and electric options we have managed to get into our rental, owned, and managed fleets. The overwhelming benefit our customers are seeing off the bat is

PAGE 24

- HIANZ HIRE & RENTAL 2022

the improvement to workplace noise levels have been reduced dramatically with engine noise gone and zero fumes from lithium-ion machines. The following feedback we get is about the reduced operating costs with no need for these machines to have additional onsite fuel stores or gas supplies they are starting to see the long-term benefits of going electric. As Central Group has been growing and expanding our business groups and dealer networks, we have seen many of these benefits go from local to national as the 1 or 2 machine tests turn into fleet upgrades and replacement machines are increasingly becoming electric. This only helps to multiply the benefits of this new and evolving technology and helps it gain momentum. With growth and development comes knowledge and understanding – no

one in our team knows this better than Dean Meyer. Dean has been with us since the first machines started arriving and have been hands-on with getting to know how electric technology/machinery is being put together. He is doing this so that in the long run we know how to keep it running and well maintained without having to rely on overseas experts. We’ve seen a range of small tweaks and changes coming though as the suppliers make changes to designs and adapt to real-world problems these machines encounter, improving with each new generation.

company PROFILE

The team have been getting great feedback on the lithium-ion and electric options we have managed to get into our rental, owned, and managed fleets. Concerned with the global supply shortages and shipping delays? Our Directors Steve Mackay, Des Walsh, and Wayne Ross have seen this hitting almost every supplier, so we’ve been proactively locking in and ordering ahead with suppliers to maintain reliable unit delivery of commonly needed machines. But realistically there have been some suppliers of suppliers who are starting to see raw material supply issues taking a toll. There has been a range of approaches we’ve seen from suppliers from simplifying standard specs and opening new production facilities. It looks like time will tell which strategy will be the best approach. HIANZ, the Central Group of companies and its’ connected businesses have been serving New Zealand and the hire and rental companies

throughout NZ for many years. Most customers and suppliers will know us by our direct-to-customer and supplier businesses Central Group Forklifts and Trucks, NZEG (New Zealand Equipment Group), or Fowlers Machinery. These units have helped us secure strong relationships with our customers in delivering quality machinery and backing it up with great supply and knowledge for servicing and parts to keep the gear running. Behind the scenes, well not quite behind the scenes our team have been working with brands including Heli Forklifts, Takeuchi, Wacker Neuson, Hyundai Trucks, UD Trucks, Junghenrick, and TCM/Unicarrier. These brands are some of the best material handling machines. ■

COMPANY PROFILE

NORTH HARBOUR HIRE: MATES IN BUSINESS When Graham Smith and Robin Stanley combined their talents and a decent chunk of cash to purchase North Harbour Hire in 2019 they could never have projected the bumpy road ahead Three years on and the business partners have withstood the disruption of Covid and have successfully reshaped their business model. “We have four main streams to the business,” says Robin. “Firstly, there’s the equipment hire business which is growing nicely. We also offer a range of mechanical servicing, including warranty work, for small engine stuff. Then there’s an LPG filling facility and our Kärcher retail business.”.

Although the pair have only been in business for three years, they’ve been good friends for a long time and respectful of each other’s talents. “Robin does a great job with the admin, website and marketing,

while I look after the workshop” says Graham, underplaying his mechanical skills. And it’s been Graham’s mechanical skills that has enabled the business to open their Kärcher retail operation. “I’d done a lot of servicing work with the Kärcher range over many years so knew the products really well,” says Graham. “We had a chat with Kärcher who wanted to develop their presence on the North Shore and so we quickly set up the retail operation”. “You would think it’s a bit counter-intuitive to offer a hire service alongside a retail operation,” says Graham “We get so many customers who fall in love with the commercial machines and so once having hired one they then want to buy one. We figured if they weren’t buying from us, they’d be purchasing from someone else”. The commitment to Kärcher comes with some stringent requirements: the business needed to ensure it had in-house technical expertise to back up its service commitment. As well as Graham’s wealth of knowledge the company also has two proficient

mechanical apprentices who get exposure to a wide range of equipment and customers. However it’s the equipment hire side of the business that provides the financial momentum. “Our most popular hire items are mowers, chainsaws and garden equipment, especially at weekends,” says Robin. North Harbour Hire preferentially stocks a wide selection of Briggs & Stratton equipment, including the Echo range of garden products. “I think we’re seeing the continued growth of the major hardware retailers and the corresponding demise of the local lawn mower shop” says Robin. “While there’s a nice servicing opportunity for us, I think we’re also seeing many people understanding the environmental impact of buying lower-quality disposable equipment and instead hiring something that will do the job without going into landfill”. “There’s also the issue of space with current housing on the North Shore” continuing at a frantic pace,“ says Graham. “Our trailer business is going well, mainly because no one’s got space for a trailer these days”. Plans for continued growth are well underway. “We’d like to expand into a couple of new equipment categories, while being less reliant on our weekend business” says Robin. ■

EWPA NEWS

Do you own and hire out Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWP’s)?

If your answer is yes, you need to read this article...

J

ust over three years ago, the government publicly consulted with industry about changes to the Health and Safety at Work Act, primarily for plant and structures. This new series of regulations is now legislated and in is the hands of Worksafe NZ for setting a plan of implementation. It is the EWPA’s understanding that the Plant and Structures regulations implementation will be consulted with industry before being enacted. This doesn’t mean we will get to make change to it when consulted but more on how the regulations will be implemented and the time periods for adoption. So, what is so important about these regulations? There are a few things that Hire will need to consider and

PAGE 30

- HIANZ HIRE & RENTAL 2022

adopt. Some/most we are all doing already. Such as, machine guarding and increased safety measures for users of hired equipment. There will be a need to lift our game on a few items that are difficult to guard without considerable cost. Seatbelts and operator restraint will be an increased area of attention. This may mean not just a std lap belt but a restraint belt that disables the machine if it’s not fitted. The work we have recently done around log splitters will also come back into the forefront. The biggest changes is with EWP’s and working at height. This is something the EWPA has been working hard on over the past year to get a better position than that being adopted. Sadly, it seems Worksafe think better than the industry when it comes to EWPs, and this means we will need to adopt their latest ideas for the time being whilst we prove they have it wrong and need to adjust. Two things affect hire going forward on EWP’s. First is that inspectors of

EWPS now need to be CBIP accredited which means they need to hold a welding qualification or similar knowledge of the Welding Supervisor qualification. This can only be proven by attending and passing the Weld

EWPA NEWS

Supervisor course run by HERA. All of this needs to be done by December this year to continue inspecting EWP’s. The second thing is that the inspector cannot inspect a machine that they have worked on over the previous six months. This includes any repair or scheduled maintenance work. That means, you need to have either two

inspector/mechanics or a third-party inspector for every 6 monthly certifcate if your technician continues to maintain the machine. This has bought a whole lot of complexity to the situation and in the minds of the EWPA has increased risk not safety.

There is much more to come on this matter and as HIANZ, we will do as much as we can to support the EWPA in getting a better position on this matter. The EWPA will keep us informed of progress and we will update our HIANZ /EWP members webpage with more information as it comes to hand. ■

NZFIA NEWS

We have been busy within the forklift space and we are pleased to share the following progress report.

T

he Good Practice Guideline (GPG) draft is nearly ready to be distributed to the wider industry for feedback. We are working on the final few sections, then it will be time to format the document and work on any illustrations that may be required.

The panel has been doing great work within this space and they have proposed some positive and much needed changes to our industry. I have been encouraging the panel to think big and to provide solutions to issues that have plagued us all within the forklift industry for some time. The GPG has been drafted with the betterment of our industry at the forefront and has been no small task. The GPG has been a “from the ground up” project and is not a revised ACOP by any means. I have been in communications with Worksafe NZ, NZQA and Hanga-Aro-Rau so that we can hit the ground running as we progress this document. Once this document is complete, a review of the forklift related Unit Standards will commence. We have included proposals for how this may look, and we look forward to receiving feedback from the wider industry when we distribute the draft GPG for industry feedback in the near future. I am sure there will be those who approve the proposals. We also PAGE 32

- HIANZ HIRE & RENTAL 2022

expect that there will be those that feel that we may have missed the mark. Fortunately, the Forklift community won’t need any encouragement to give feedback… And this is a good thing! This document needs to best serve the industry. By best serve, I mean Keep our people, our mobile plant and our operations safe. To ensure that everyone is aware of their duty of care, obligations, and responsibilities regardless of if you are a Supplier, Trainer, Employer, Fleet Manager, Service Provider or Forklift Operator. This is our opportunity to produce a “by industry, for industry” document. If there are those that feel we have missed the mark, this will at least start the discussion as to what would best serve us. A lot of work has been underway producing, developing and moderating training packages for our members wishing to deliver Silvercard Forklift training. Two training packages have been moderated and approved to report the following unit standards: 1. 10851 – Operate a powered industrial lift truck (forklift) 2. 10852 – Operate a powered industrial lift truck (forklift) fitted with attachments 3. 18409 – Use a forklift mounted safety platform in the workplace.

Mentoring courses will be underway shortly for those who wish to deliver the above training packages. These mentoring courses are aimed to familiarise the trainer with the course content as well as learn the back of house systems designed to load learners and report the appropriate units. As many of you will be aware, the calibre of Forklift training being delivered in NZ is inconsistent. Silvercard Forklift will be delivered to the same standard regardless of where you attend the course. We aim to achieve this by adopting the model currently being used by the Silvercard MEWP programme. This consists of courses such as the mentoring course, but in addition we moderate and support our trainers as best we can to achieve this consistency.

Planning for the New Zealand Forklift Operator Championships 2022 is underway! The intention is to hold regional heats throughout NZ and for the winner of each region to compete at the finals in Christchurch on the 25th and 26th of November at the Trucking Industry Show. The NZFIA along with other suppliers will be there, so save the date. Come and introduce yourself, tell us your thoughts on the draft GPG, talk Forklifts and watch the championships to see who takes the trophy and the bragging rights home. More details on this to follow. ■

LEGAL

FRANCHISING TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS By Andrew Skinner of Auckland law firm Martelli McKegg

If you are experiencing growth in your business and considering how to expand your footprint then one option would be to consider franchising. New Zealand has a strong and successful franchising history and according to the latest Massey University survey results has 590 franchisors of business systems with sales turnover estimated at $37 billion.

F

ranchising provides an opportunity to expand your footprint in new areas without needing to stump up all the extra capital yourself. If you have a strong brand and good systems for operating your business then read on to learn the basics of franchising. How does franchising work? Franchising is a business model where a business owner (Franchisor) grants to another person (Franchisee) a licence to use their brand and rights to operate their business system in another location. The franchising relationship is governed by a detailed franchise agreement, which allows the Franchisee to use the trademarks, branding and operating system of the Franchisor’s business in return for paying certain fees. The Franchisee will receive initial training and mentorship from the Franchisor when setting up the new franchise business. Importantly, the franchisee will be responsible for all the capital and operating costs of the new franchise business. The Franchisor will need to prepare an operations manual, which acts as the bible for running the business. It governs the franchise’s performance, procedures and conduct. The franchise agreement will ensure that the Franchisee cannot deviate from the Franchisor’s operations manual and procedures.

PAGE 34

- HIANZ HIRE & RENTAL 2022

New Zealand does not have specific legislation that governs how Franchisors are required to operate in relation to a Franchisee. Franchisors are not obliged to disclose any specific information regarding their business to potential Franchisees so caveat emptor (buyer beware) will apply. This puts the onus on the Franchisee to investigate whether the opportunity is right for them and ask the Franchisor the right questions to understand what they are getting into. If the Franchisor is a member of the Franchise Association of New Zealand (FANZ) then the Franchisor will be required to provide potential Franchisees with a disclosure document. The disclosure document will have specific information (as set by FANZ) regarding the franchise to provide to the Franchisee. Membership to FANZ is beneficial to Franchisors as you join a community of franchisors who share information and experiences and promote best practices within franchising. Key features to have a successful franchise system 01. Distinguishable Your product or services do not have to be unique but you do need to set yourself apart from your competitors. It could simply be the way you run your business that

sets you apart from the rest, such as better technology systems or unique branding. 02. Strong track record You will need to show that your business model works and is profitable for other people to want to buy in. You will need to work out how long it will take for new Franchisees to build a client base and turnover in new areas to the point that they can be self sustaining. The franchise agreement will also need to give the Franchisees enough time to make a fair return on their investment once the franchise is self sustaining. 03. Replicable Your business model will need to be easy to replicate. The power of a franchise is the ability to replicate the same business model for a different customer base in a different location. You will need to be able to teach someone your business quickly so they can carry it on without your input. The Benefits for a Franchisor Franchising is a cost effective way to expand your business into a national or even international footprint. The main barrier that businesses face when looking to expand is the amount of capital and labour that it requires to operate in new markets. Franchisees will spend their own

Franchisee to grow the business as they will be rewarded if the business succeeds.

more freedom and may be invited to develop and improve on the systems with the Franchisor.

Franchisees will front the operating costs for running the franchise and will be required to pay the Franchisor franchise fees, which is usually a percentage of the monthly revenue of the business. The Franchisor will not have to be involved in the day to day management of the business but will be required to provide oversight in a system development/mentoring role. This will free up the Franchisor to attract new Franchisees or focus on other initiatives.

The Benefits for a Franchisee

Franchising is a great way to grow your business but care is needed to do it properly. This article provides an overview of some of the important concepts but obtaining the right advice to guide you through the process is very important. ■

The franchise agreement will set performance goals that the Franchisee will be required to meet on an ongoing basis to be able to continue using the systems. This incentivises the

Franchisees are able to buy into an already successful business model that has proven systems in place. They can skip the start-up stage which is often the difficult part as you need test an unproven concept in the market. The Franchisee can hit the ground running with a proven concept that has name recognition. Paperless Operations: Green in More Ways Than One Once upon a time, we carved deeds and transactions on stone tablets. Paper took over since it was so light and way easier to carry around. Soon, we’ll look back on using paper like we used to look at stone tablet carving, and it’s not just about the environmental costs of paper production. Here are five ways Hire software helps businesses reduce paper waste and become more efficient.

immediately in the system. You’ll have answers more quickly and eliminate the need for reminders.

01. Provides a digital source of truth.

02. Handles your contracts.

Running a hire business generates a ton of data. Every hire requires item and customer data, time due back, dealing with various hire rates, etc. Having a digital source of truth means anyone in the organisation can find those details immediately - no need to search for the one person that knows about the deal they made.

The hire process has a lot of steps quotations to bookings, invoicing, payments - and that’s just on the front end. You might have different rates to charge, by customer, by day/week/ month, etc. Updating or managing all this information by paper? That’s a tiring task, especially to ensure that information is updated in every location.

But it goes beyond cutting chaos at the counter - when you’re using hire software instead of paper, truth isn’t trapped at a single location. If you need to see that an item has been delivered, you don’t have to wait for your drivers to find the paperwork in their cab, take a photo, and send it or worse, wait until they’re back at the depot to get that information. Signed delivery paperwork can be accessed

PAGE 36

- HIANZ HIRE & RENTAL 2022

Your hire software should not only handle the contract process, but it should integrate with your accounting system to give you end-to-end contract management. Your team will be able to provide better service when everyone can see who has what item, the correct pricing, accurate availability, and are even able to transfer items between stores quickly and easily.

And with an integrated website and payments…your customers can be writing their own quotations and/ or contracts from home 24/7, keeping your phone free and your staff focused on customers at the counter. 03. Two Words: Digital Signatures. Ever try to find an old contract in your filing system? Even with great recordkeepers, you’ll still need to be on-premisis to find proper documentation, not to mention the space to store all those contracts. When you take electronic signatures, signatures and documents are stored within your software. So if you have internet access and you’re able to log in to your account, you can view the entire history of signatures, by customer or contract, and find the signature you need. You’re eliminating disputes quickly by showing who last had responsibility for an item. And you’re doing it within a few keystrokes.

Point of Rental Sets New “Best Employee” Records MELBOURNE - At some hire stores, it’s their longesttenured staff member. At others, Point of Rental is their new up-and-comer. Regardless of how long Point of Rental has been handling their hire operations, though, thousands of businesses named it their Employee of the Year in 2021. Different reasons were given - “It works 24/7.” “It helps train our employees.” “It’s made our team more efficient.” One owner even wanted to give Point of Rental a hug. The 40-year industry veteran continues to be available to other businesses, too. See how you can put Point of Rental to work for you at pointofrental.com. Lorem ipsum

04. Organises Your Logistics.

If your service team needs to annotate inspections, repairs, or breakdowns and update their schedule/route for the day, mobile apps handle it. If it’s your drivers, making deliveries, collections, site visits… they can check in at locations and dispatchers can see where they are in real-time - no need for calls or texts. If your sales team is out on site, you can see available inventory and set up quotations and contracts from the customer site. Even better - your team back at the counter will be able to see your sales staff have quoted the item so they don’t overbook it minutes later.

The more you know, the easier it is to plan well. By getting away from paper and investing in hire software, you’re consolidating your data in one place. You can now see what you have available at your other locations without having to call and interrupt their flow. You’re not having to print load sheets, contracts, or anything, and your team is able to see directions. You’re able to run a dispatching office, mapping routes to be as efficient as possible, increasing efficiency and employee satisfaction (who likes dropping something off, going to their next stop, and seeing that the third stop was right back by the first one?). 05. Mobile Applications. Carrying paperwork on the road with you…you just plain don’t need to do it. Don’t worry about a wind gust blowing something away. Don’t worry about it falling between the seats. Don’t worry about spilling coffee all over everything.

Mobile applications are able to handle all the data you’d have on paperwork, but they sync with your hire software to get you the most up-to-date data.

So, if you’re weighing the value of implementing paperless processes… well, no one in the paper era was clamoring to bring back the era of stone tablets. Similarly, we haven’t heard a single business owner that’s made the switch say “Gosh, I miss paperwork, rekeying contracts, and filing documents.” ■

CYBER RISK IMPACTS FOR THE HIRE INDUSTRY

A

ll businesses today rely on IT and technology. We use them without thinking in the same way we would have used a calculator or fax machine in the past. Yet improvements in efficiency come with a whole new area of risk for businesses of all sizes. The hire industry is no different. The average financial impact of a cyber-attack on a business is $159,000 according to a survey issued by Hewlett Packard toward the end of last year. Yet less than 5% of New Zealand SMEs have cyber insurance as protection. The simple fact is that cyber risk and threats are developing and changing. There have been increases in both ransomware attacks and social engineering (e.g. sending e-mails impersonating senior colleagues) and losses are mounting. Cyber insurance can play an important role. Cyber insurance is, in many ways, different to other forms of insurance. Some insurers will undertake pre-policy risk assessments and advise you of your system vulnerabilities and what needs to be done to fix them and some will provide real time threat assessments advising you of new threats specific to your systems. All insurers will provide 24/7 cyber response services to help you manage an attack or recover from a loss. Understanding the risks, you are exposed to and the likely costs and impact of an attack on your business is important. No system is perfectly secure. Having a well thought through recovery plan that includes an element of insurance assistance will help improve the resilience of your business. ■ For further information contact David Chow, Executive Broker ICIB on 027 482 6832, email David.chow@icib.co.nz or visit www.icib.co.nz HIANZ HIRE & RENTAL 2022 -

S

tarting in the agriculture equipment business back in 1969, Braber Equipment made a bold expansion from the wholesale agriculture market in 1991 and started BE Pressure Supply, a manufacturer of pressure washers and accessories. The goal was to compliment the agriculture products being sold through Braber Equipment in Canada and the Pacific Northwest and offer end-users quality products with exceptional value. Since that time BE Pressure has grown from a three man operation in a small warehouse, to eight North American distribution facilities, five international manufacturing facilities and proudly exports to more than thirty countries globally today. With a strong team of employees focused on designing quality products and delivering good service, they plan to continue their quest to be as innovative in the future as they have for the past twenty years. It is their family driven philosophy that has allowed them to grow in an industry that has seen much consolidation in the recent years amongst the competition. ased in the suburb of Mt Wellington, this large and modern facility features a selection of display equipment for sale including boom lifts, scissor lifts, vertical lifts, compact crawler booms and low-level access machines. The site is also home to a large workshop that undertakes predelivery checks servicing, repairs, inspections and major rebuilds. Additionally, the facility features integrated warehousing that’s capable of dispatching spare parts around the country at short notice or making them available for local pick-up. There’s a team of 10 JLG staff based at the site including three mobile service technicians; a further four mobile service technicians are based across other parts of the country (Wellington, Christchurch, and Central Otago), providing the convenience of job site servicing and breakdown assistance if required. JLG Industries (NZ) Branch Manager, Cameron Neilson, said the New Zealand branch was well credentialled to support local customers, with prompt, efficient and professional service. “There’s a major focus now on investing in our staff. Among the programs are a range of industry related training and qualification activities. “We’re also increasing our focus on what our customers need to run their equipment and machines more efficiently, this includes having more parts in stock and available. Another recent change is an expansion of our operating hours, as well as upgrades to our Online Express parts portal, making it more convenient for customers to get what they need.” Visitors to the Auckland branch in the coming months will also notice several layout changes – these have been designed to increase the workshop footprint and to free-up floorspace to establish a dedicated display area for new equipment sales, with the view of providing customers with a more professional purchase experience. ■

D’GNOME UNDERCOVER

IT’S TIME TO BE RUTHLESS

It’s about this time of year that D’Gnome finally gets over the shock of putting together the upcoming sales and expenses budget

D

’Gnome had a rant in the last issue about the cost of staff and the difficulty in getting really good people. That cost certainly got highlighted in this years in-house budget, with anticipated staff costs making up a higher percentage of overall sales. Ouch!

Hire, especially short-term hire, is a labour intensive business. It’s especially tough if you have a quick turn around of high maintenance gear like garden equipment or party hire items. It got D’Gnome thinking: what could we do to mitigate some of the labour costs. D’Gnome spoke to a mate in business who suggested a couple of ideas. 1. What is not performing? We often carry lines of equipment that don’t pay their way. They’ve either got a shitty return on cost or take up too much time to clean or maintain but for sentimental reasons we haven’t got around to flicking them on. The sad truth is that it’s just not worth it. Wake up, realise there are no sacred cows and get rid of them. D’Gnome’s mate asked the heartless question: What would the receivers do if they walked in your door tomorrow? Turn that money into something useful.

photo by Scott Graham - Unsplash

2. What can you make more efficient? Cleaning is a constant bugbear in our industry. If it takes too long to clean a certain piece of equipment get rid of it. Perhaps investing in a new automatic wash system or wash bay might save you time and money, or an expansion of work space to avoid shuffling equipment. How can we do more with less manhours? At $22 - $30 per hour it probably won’t take long to recoup the costs and you’ll have a happier team. 3. What can you make more reliable? We all hate breakdowns. D’Gnome hasn’t seen any research from the hire industry but it must cost 4 – 5 times the amount of time to rectify a breakdown as it does to carry out preventative maintenance. It’s

worthwhile keeping a log of customer complaints (including breakdowns) just to track any particular trends with dodgy gear or insufficient servicing. D’Gnome had one item in the fleet a few years ago that caused minor annoyance. Once we realised it was a trending lemon we got rid of it and made life better for everyone. 4. Involve your team Task them with a challenge to make life better. It might involve better scheduling or providing better workstations or carrying more spares. American General George Patton famously said “Never Tell People How to Do Things. Tell Them What to Do, and They Will Surprise You with Their Ingenuity.” It’s worth giving them clear direction and a few resources to have a go at getting more accomplished with the same people. ■
