Aftersomerobustbrainstormingand debatetheboardidentifiedseven priorityareas,allofwhichare underpinnedbymarketing, communicationandrevenue.Aboard memberhasoversightofeach strategicinitiative.
MOSTMEMBERS willalreadybefamiliar withsomeofHIANZ’sstrategicactivitiesandservices.TheAPEXprojectis startingtogainsignificanttraction,our libraryofESDSsheetscontinuesto grow,participationinSilvercard coursescontinuestoincreaseandour webstoreisrunningwell. However,Covidhasleftitsmarkonour industry,particularlyonourabilityto interactwithoneanother.Thisyear’s conferenceinChristchurchwasa greatopportunitytorenew acquaintancesanddevelopnew contacts.Butweneedtodoalotmore.
THEHIANZBOARD iskeenlyawareof theneedtoimproveour communicationsandmember engagement.Youcanexpecttosee amorecoordinatedprofessional approachtocommunication.Inthe
shorttermyoucanalsoexpecttosee amemberonlyPrivateFacebook pagewherememberscansharealerts andotherrelevantinformation. Regionaleventswillgetashakeup, pilotingsmallermorelocalisedevents toensurewere-establishthose connectionswithinourindustry.
HIANZwillcontinuetosupportyouwith thetoolsandresourcesyouneedto managemattersofcomplianceand health&safetywithinyourbusiness. Wehavesomesuperbtrainingcourses availablebutareawareweneedto focusonhire-specificcoursessuchas health&safetybasicsandhazardous goodstraining.
ADVOCACYANDLOBBYING have becomeamajoractivityforHIANZ. Throughsomehardworkbyourteam (andRodneyinparticular)wehave developedgoodrelationshipsand constructivedialoguewithkeystakeholderssuchasWorksafeNZ.The incominghealthandsafetyatwork reformforplantandstructureswill havemajorimpactsonmany equipmentcategories,especially scaffoldingandMEWP’s.It’svitalthat weworkwiththeregulatorstomake implementationofthenewlegislation asefficientaspossible.
Onthelonger-termhorizon,HIANZ intendstoinvestigatewaystoattract youngpeopletoourindustryand createinitiativestohelpyouretain them.Likeitornotwealsoneedto considerthesustainabilityofour industryfiveormoreyearsahead.We arealreadyseeingsomerapid changesinhowsustainabilityisbeing embracedinEuropeduetoacombinationoflegislatedchangeand customerdemand.Itisnaturalthat NewZealandwillprobablyfollow someofthesetrends.
THEREARESOME excitingtimesahead andrealopportunitiestoaddvalueto ourmembersbusinesses.Theboardis committedtosupportingmember’sto besuccessfulbyprovidingthetools andresourcestohelpmembers overcomefuturechallengesand makehireeasy.TheboardofHIANZ areexcitedtoseewherethisjourney willlead.■

InAugust weheldourAnnual Conference.TostartwithI’llgiveyoua fewnumberstoponderandconsider–720peopleondayone,790onday twoalongwith200HIANZmembers (suppliersandhirecompanies).Andat theAwardsevening800peoplewere serveddinnersacrosstheseparate HIANZandCCNZfunctions,allatthe sametime!
Thehighlightformewasthenumberof peoplewehadtogetheratonetime. Otherhighlightsincludedseeingclients withmembersandsupplierswithboth theircustomerbases.Itwasalso hearteningtoseesomanycontractors vieforthetitleofthebestdressed steampunkcostumeandofcoursethe HireExcellenceAwardsnightwasone ofthebestever.

Environmentalsustainabilityhasbeen kickedaroundformanyyearswithno significantchangetothewaywedo things.However,Iamofthefirmbelief

•Venue–greatspace,qualityof everything,eventhepeople. Theirfoodwasgreattoo.
HADHIANZHELD aconference therebyitself,wewouldhave beentuckedoffintoasmall corner.Theplaceismassive.Inactual fact,ontheFridaynight,theculminationofourjointconferencewiththe CivilContractors,wherewebothheld separateAwardsnights,theNational Partywasalsoholdingtheiropening conferencedinner.Therewerejuston 1300peopleinthevenuethatevening,luckilyforusallweneversawa politician,andsomehowthevenue gotusfedatthesametimewithlittle ornonoticeabledelay.Incredible. 102exhibitingcompanieswereon display,givingusourbiggestever exhibitionhall.Itwasdefinitely focussedonconstructionequipment
butstilltherewere“Hire”specific exhibitorsthereaswell.Wehadso muchdemandforsitesthatEWPA, NZFIA,MartelliMcKegg,OSHBoxand Silvercardrelinquishedoursitesand shrunkintooneboothtoallowother payingexhibitorstocomealong. CCNZdidthesame,shrinkingfromfour standsdowntotwo.
Christchurchturneditonandgaveus agreatvenue,mildweatherfor Augustandoptionsforthosewho wantedtocontinueintothelaterparts ofthenight/earlymorning.Youmight havereadintheCEOreport,the highlightsfromtheauthor.Anevent likethis,beingthesecondforthe HIANZteam,gaveussomereallygood ideasandafewareastoimproveon.
•Somethingyoumighthavebeen obliviousto,theconference managementteam.Thiswasthe CCNZhistoricalconference organiser.Wewereimpressedwith theworktheydidduringthe conference.Forusasateam,itfelt liketheywereontopofeverything andallowedustospendtimewith thosewhoattended.
•Masterclasses.Theseweredeepdive educationalsessionsthatranfora coupleofhoursonthefirstmorning. Wehadsomereallygoodtopics, content,andpresenters.EMArana “fromhiretofire”classandbyall accountsitwasfullofreallyhelpful content.SimonWebsterofFinance NZ,supportedbyChrisBirdofBNZ, gaveahighlyinformativeclasson financeoptions,fundingtoasset ratiosandpromotedhireasagood
startingpoint.Wewillcontinuethese themesintonextyearbutwon’trun thematthesametimesothatyou canattendboth.
•HireExcellenceAwardsnight.We havereceivedalotofgreat feedbackfromattendeesthatthe nightwasoneofthebest.Itwasa nightforustofocusonourpeoplein theindustryandrecognisethose businessesthatareworkinghard towardsexcellence.TeRadar addedtothenightwithhiswittiness andadaptablepresenting.Sogood, wealreadyhavehimlockedinfor nextyear.
•KailaColbin,aguestspeakeronthe firstday.Her“Gradually,then suddenly”presentationwasavery insightfultopic.Itmadeyoulookat whatyouaredoing,what’sworking andwhatisthenexttrend.That catchphrasenameofher presentationissomethingweshould belookingoutfor–thatthethingjust tickingalongnowmightallofa suddenbeabouttotakeoff.
Needsimprovement:

•Price.Wetookabitofheatonthe priceofthisconference.We,too, wouldlovetokeepthepricedown foryouall.Buttherealityisabig, newvenueandthatmanypeople comeswithalargebudget.We, however,havedonethatnow,and aswestartplanningfornextyear, wearelookingatourcostsvery closely,soastomakeitvaluefor moneynextyear.
