GEHL NEW AGRICULTURAL EQUIPMENT MANURE SPREADER WARRANTY GEHL AGRICULTURE DIVISION of the GEHL COMPANY, hereinafter referred to as Gehl, warrants new Gehl Manure Spreaders and attachments, to the Original Retail Purchaser to be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of twelve (12) months {ninety (90) days for commercial/custom use} from the Warranty Start Date, except as set forth below: The sides on box spreaders and the tank on Scavenger® spreaders against perforation (rust through), and Clad-Tuff® floor on box spreaders against delamination, are warranted for a period often (10) years from the Warranty Start Date for replacement only, labor and freight excluded, unless defect occurs during initial twelve (12) month warranty period.

GEHL AGRICULTURE WARRANTY INCLUDES: Genuine Gehl parts and labor costs required to repair or replace equipment at the selling dealer's business location.

GEHL MAKES NO REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED (INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR PARTICULAR PURPOSE), EXCEPT AS EXPRESSLY STATED IN THIS WARRANTY STATEMENT.

GEHL WARRANTY DOES NOT INCLUDE: 1.

Transportation to selling dealer's business location or, at the option of the Original Retail Purchaser, the cost of a service call.

2.

Used equipment.

3.

Components covered by their own non-Gehl warranties, such as tires, trade accessories and engines.

4.

Normal maintenance service and expendable, high wear items.

5.

Repairs or adjustments caused by: improper use; non-intended use; failure to follow recommended maintenance procedures; use of unauthorized attachments; accident or other casualty.

6.

Liability for incidental or consequential damages of any type, including, but not limited to lost profits or expenses of acquiring replacement equipment.

No agent, employee or representative of Gehl has any authority to bind Gehl to any warranty except as specifically set forth herein. Any of these limitations excluded by local law shall be deemed deleted from this warranty; all other terms will continue to apply.

CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Your decision to purchase this piece of GEHL· equip­ ment was a good one. We are sure that your decision was strongly considered and that you are looking for­ ward to many seasons of reliable performance from this machine.

We, as a Company, have invested a great deal of time and effort in developing our lines of agricultural and industrial equipment.

This manual was developed specifically for the machine you have purchased. The information, con­ tained within, was prepared for your assistance in preparing, adjusting, maintaining and servicing your machine. More importantly, this manual provides an operating plan for safe and proper use of your machine.

Major points of safe operation are detailed in the SAFETY chapter of this manual. Refer to the Table of Contents for an outline (by chapters) of this manual.

Use the Index, in the back of the manual, for specific chapter and topic/page number references.

A plastic Pouch is provided on this unit for storing the Operator's Manual. After using it, please return the Manual to the Pouch and keep it with the unit at all times! Furthermore, we recommend if this machine is re-sold that this Manual accompany the unit.

The Spreader model and serial numbers are on a plate located on the left side of the Main Frame at the front left corner of the Box. "Right" and "Left" are deter­ mined from a position standing behind the Spreader.

From this position, the Transmission and Drive Line are On the "right" side.

SAFETY The above Safety Alert Symbol means ATTENTION! BECOME ALERT! YOUR SAFETY IS IN­ VOLVED! It stresses an attitude of "Heads Up for Safety" and can be found throughout this Operator's Manual and on the machine itself.

BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO OPERATE THIS EQUIPMENT, READ AND STUDY THE FOL­ LOWING SAFETY INFORMATION. IN ADDI­ TION, MAKE SURE THAT EVERY INDIVIDUAL WHO OPERATES OR WORKS WITH THIS EQUIPMENT, WHETHER FAMILY MEMBER OR EMPLOYEE, IS FAMILIAR WITH THESE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS. Our Company ALWAYS takes the operator and his/her safety into consideration when designing its machinery and guards exposed moving parts for his/her protec­ tion. However, some areas can NOT be guarded or shielded in order to assure proper operation. In addi­ tion, this Operator's Manual and Decals, on the machine, warn of further danger and should be read and observed closely.

MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE BEFORE unclogging, cleaning, adjusting, lubricat­ ing or servicing the unit: 1.

Disengage the tractor PTO.

2.

Shut off the tractor engine, remove the starter key and take it with you.

3.

Wait for all movement to stop.

4.

Remove the Telescoping PTO Drive and ALL power connections from the tractor.

ONL Y when you have taken these precautions can you be sure it is safe to proceed. Failure to follow the above procedure, could lead to death or serious bodily injury.

ADDITIONAL SAFETY REMINDERS Some photographs, used in this manual, may show Doors, Guards and Shields open or removed for il­ lustration purposes ONLY. BE SURE that all Doors, Guards and Shields are in their proper operating posi­ tions BEFORE starting the tractor engine to operate the unit.

ALWAYS wear safety glasses with side shields when striking metal against metal. It is further recommended that a softer (non-chipable) material be used to cushion the blow. Failure to heed could lead to serious injury to the eye(s) or other parts of the body.

On Spreaders equipped with Hydraulic Endgates, NEVER use your hands to search for hydraulic fluid leaks; use a piece of cardboard. CAREFULLY inspect ALL Hydraulic Hoses and connections, on a routine basis; NEVER use your bare hand, escaping fluid under pressure can cause serious injury. If injured by escaping fluid, see a doctor at once. Injected fluid MUST be surgically removed by a doctor familiar with this type of injury or gangrene may result.

SAFETY (Continued) ALWAYS follow state and local regulations regarding use of a safety chain and auxiliary lighting when towing farm equipment on public highways. BE SURE to check with local law enforcement agencies for your own particular regulations. Unless otherwise prohibited, use a Slow-moving Vehicle Emblem.

Only a safety chain (NOT an elastic or nylon/plastic tow strap) should be used to retain the connection between the towing and towed machines, in the event of separation of the primary attaching system.

Block the Spreader so it will NOT roll after it is dis­ connected from the tractor.

Good safety practice dictates that you NEVER tow an implement (without brakes) unless towing vehicle weighs at least one-and-one half (1-1/2) times the weight of the towed implement and its load. For any public highway travel and to be in compliance with this rule, BE SURE that your tractor is heavy enough to counterbalance the weight of the loaded Spreader; refer to the Specifications chapter for potential loaded weights of the various model Spreaders.

Our Company does NOT sell replacement tires. In addition, tire mounting, service or inflation can be dangerous. Whenever possible, trained personnel should be called to service and/or mount tires, follow­ ing the tire manufacturer's instruction. If you do NOT have such instructions, contact your tire dealer or our Company. In any event, to avoid possible fatal or serious injury, follow the specific directive given in the Service chapter of this manual.

To avoid injury, stay out of the Spreader Box. If entrance into the Box is required, BE SURE to exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCE­ DURE BEFORE going in.

REMEMBER! It is the owner's responsibility for com­ municating information on safe use and proper main­ tenance of this machine.

MANURE GAS IS A DEADLY KILLER I Good safety practices dictate that you NEVER enter a manure pit alone. BE SURE someone else is around to help you out in an emergency.

CHAPTER 5 CONTROLS & SAFETY EQUIPMENT This machine is provided with features for operator safety and convenience.

A CAUTION Become familiar with and know how to use ALL safety devices and controls on this machine BEFORE attempting to operate the unit. Know how to stop machine operation BEFORE starting It.

FUNCTION CONTROL (Fig. 5-1) This GEHL Box Spreader features a Function Control which allows the Conveyor Apron to be operated for unloading and to stop the Beater(s) for Box c1eanout.

The Control Mechanism is linked to the tractor by a Control Rope. An Indicator. which protrudes thru a slot in the Front Cover, is provided to show the operation mode, according to a Decal attached above the slot.

NOTE:

BEFORE proceeding to load or after un­ loading and cleaning-out the Spreader Box, reset the Indicator to the "Start/Slow" position.

GUARDS & SHIELDS (Fig. 5-1)

A CAUTION BEFORE proceeding to perform any work on the unit and BEFORE removing or opening any Guards or Covers, BE SURE to exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PRO· CEDURE (page 8). Replace ALL Guards and Covers BEFORE resuming operation.

Whenever possible and without affecting machine operation, Guards, Shields and/or hinged Covers have been used on this equipment to protect potentially hazardous areas. In many places, Decals are also provided to warn of potential dangers as well as to display special operating procedures.

HITCHJACK (Fig. 5-2) A Hitchjack is furnished with the Spreader to support the machine when the tractor is disconnected as well as to facilitate aligning the Hitch Clevis with the trac· tor draw bar for hookup.

A Hitchjack is furnished with the Spreader to support the machine when the tractor is disconnected as well as to facilitate aligning the Hitch Clevis with the trac­ tor drawbar for hookup.

When the Jack is NOT being used to support the Spreader, it can be pivoted up to the "storage" posi­ tion. Wrap the Chain around the Jack Handle, before inserting the Locking Pin through the Hub holes to prevent the Handle from dragging on the ground.

A WARNING BE SURE the Locking Pin Is properly seated Into the holes through the Jack Tube and the Hub on the Spreader A-Frame, BEFORE the tractor Is disconnected.

SAFETY CHAIN & AUXILIARY LIGHTING (Fig. 5-4)

A CAUTION ALWAYS follow state and local regulations regarding a safety chain and auxiliary lighting when towing farm equipment on a public high­ way. BE SURE to check with local law enfor­ cement agencies for your own particular regulations. Unless otherwise prohibited, use a Slow-moving Vehicle Emblem. Only a safety khaln. (NOT an · elastic or nylon/plastic tow strap) should be used to retain ~he connection between the towing and towed machines, In the event of separation of the primary attach· Ing system.

(OPTIONAL) HYDRAULIC ENDGATE (Fig. 5-3)

The Manure Spreader can be equipped with an optional Hydraulic Endgate which uses either one or two trac­ tor-operated Hydraulic Cylinders to raise and lower the Endgate. The Endgate should be ordered and installed on any unit which is frequently used to haul manure over a public highway.

The Telescoping PTO Drive is designed to rotate freely inside the Drive Shield Tubes.

The Telescoping PTO Drive is provided with a Spring­ loaded Locking Device on each end to positively lock the Drive connection onto the tractor PTO shaft and the Spreader Drive Input Shaft. Available N is nitrogen the plant can use. Total N is mostly organic and ammonium nitrogen. Organic N is slow releasing N. Ammonium N is equivalent to com­ mercial fertilizer and, except for that lost to the air, can be used by plants in the application year. Organic nitrogen must be released before plants can use it.

Variable amounts of organic nitrogen are released in a plant-available form during the first cropping year after application. Table 2 summarizes the percentages of organic nitrogen released (mineralized) during the first cropping season. Organic N released during the second, third and fourth cropping years after initial application is usually about 50%, 25%, and 12.5%, respectively, of that mineralized during the first crop­ ping season.

Nearly all of the phosphorus and potassium in animal wastes are available for plant use the year of applica­ tion. After a few years of regular waste applications, the amounts available are about the same as one year's application.

To coincide with a total "Waste Management System", the application rate for your own particular require­ ments can be determined through soil testing and the data provided in the two tables, with the assistance of a local University Extension Office. The preceding "Nutrient Value" information is reproduced with the consent of Midwest Plan Service.

Emergency Shut-down In an emergency or in case a foreign object becomes lodged in the Rear Beater area, STOP Spreader opera­ tion IMMEDIATELY by disengaging the tractor PTO. BE SURE to exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8) when leaving the tractor seat to correct the problem.

Tractor Hook-up (Fig. 6-2) NOTE: By design, this Spreader can only be properly hooked-up to a tractor which has PTO and hitch dimensions conforming to ASAE Standard S203.

Horsepower required may vary according to the con­ sistency of manure, ground speed and terrain.

Proper operation requires a tractor with sufficient horsepower to run the PTO and size to counterbalance the weight of a loaded Spreader.

Telescoping PTO Drive (Fig. 6-3) NOTE: Do NOT attempt to use a hammer to aid in attaching Drive Connections on either end.

The Spreader is equipped with a Constant Velocity Telescoping PTO Drive Shaft. This constant velocity capability, while cornering, results in a smooth, quiet running Drive Line, without power fluctuation.

A CAUTION Use a locking hltchpln (a pin with a positive retaining device) to connect the Spreader to the tractor drawbar.

PTO Connection (Fig. 6-2) NOTE: GEHL Box Spreaders are deSigned for 540 RPM PTO operation only. To prevent Drive Line damage, avoid operating at higher speeds.

It is very important that a measurement of 14" (355 mm) is established and maintained from the end of the PTO shaft to the drawbar pin hole.

NOTE: Whether in operation or NOT, the Maximum Joint angle MUST NOT exceed 80'. Any angle, greater than 80', WILL result in damage to the Joint. In addi­ tion, for continuous operation, the maximum Joint angle should be limited to 35'. Wide-angle Constant Velocity Joints are NOT designed for use as angled­ gearboxes. Any continuous operation, at angles greater than 35', will result in shortening Joint life.

Spreader Drive Input Shaft Connection Clean and lightly grease the splines on the Spreader Drive Input Shaft and Yoke of the Telescoping PTO Drive. Slide the Yoke onto the Input Shaft. Move the Yoke back and forth until the Yoke Lock engages the groove in the Input Shaft.

Tractor Connection After the correct distance is obtained, slide back the Coupler Lock and attach the PTO Drive to the tractor PTO shaft. Make sure that the Coupler locks onto the PTO shaft; slide it back and forth until it locks.

NOTE: To prevent damage to the Telescoping Drive, NEVER allow the tractor's rear tires to make contact with the Telescoping Drive while making sharp turns. Be especially careful when pulling the Spreader with a tractor equipped with dual rear tires and/or a 3-point hitch.

Check the tractor hydraulic fluid level after filling the Spreader Cylinder(s). Add fluid to the tractor system, as required.

LOADING THE SPREADER (Fig. 6-5) Although GEHL Box Spreaders are designed and built to handle solid and semi-solid manures, many potential problems can be avoided when manure is spread, if the following guidelines are established and met:

NOTE:

To prevent damage to the Drive Line, Con­ veyor Apron and Beater(s), foreign objects, such as stones, heavy timber or metal, should NEVER be placed into the Spreader.

Hydraulic Connections for Optional Endgate (Figs. 6-4 & 6-5) Before starting the tractor, connect the hydraulic Hoses, for the Endgate Control Cylinder(s), to an ap­ propriate pair of remote outlets on the tractor. Then, operate the tractor valve to fill the hydraulic lines and operate the Cylinder(s) to raise and lower the Endgate.

BE. SURE the Control Indicator is in the "Start/Slow" position before starting to load the Spreader.

When loading hard-packed manure into the Spreader with a Loader Bucket, try to breakup the large chunks. Always load from the front to the back of the Spreader. Avoid heaping material at the back. Do NOT pack the Beater(s) with manure.

3.

In winter or freezing temperatures, make sure the Beater, Apron and Endgate (as applicable) are free (NOT frozen) before loading the Spreader and applying PTO power. Test-run unit before loading it. BE SURE the Endgate (if provided) is closed before loading.

Always keep the Conveyor Apron Chain tight.

Proper Chain tension can be seen when the Chain is 1/2" (13 mm) from the Channel Crossmember at the rear of the Spreader.

UNLOADING & SPREADING (Fig. 6-5) GEm... Box Spreaders are furnished with an Apron Speed Change Mechanism to operate the Conveyor Apron at a normal unloading (slower) or faster (cleanout) speed. Operation of the Speed Change Mechanism is controlled by the Function Control Rope from the tractor seat.

NOTE: If the Conveyor is heavily loaded, it will NOT shift until the load is reduced.

To unload and spread manure and prevent unnecessary stress on the drive components, observe the following guidelines: 1.

Where provided, raise the Spreader Endgate.

2.

With the Control Indicator in the "Start/Slow" position and the tractor at low RPM, engage the tractor PTO and gradually bring the tractor up to speed. When in the "Start" position, the Beater is on and the Apron is running in low. If the Beater starts and stops or does NOT begin to turn, stop the PTO, exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8) and check if the Main Drive Shear Bolt has failed.

4.

To completely empty the Spreader Box, pull on the Control Rope to move the Indicator to the "Cleanout" position. In the "Cleanout" position, the Beater is off and the Apron is running in high.

After the Spreader is cleaned-out, DISENGAGE the PTO and pull the Control Rope to return the Indicator to the "Start/Slow" position.

OVERLOAD PROTECTION Shear Bolts are used to provide overload protection in two areas on the Spreaders.

NOTE:

BE SURE to stop al/ Spreader operation IMMEDIATEL Y when Shear Bolt failure is detected.

Apron Transmission Driven Sprocket (Fig. 6-6) A 1/4 x 1 Grade 2 Shear Bolt and Locknut are provided in the Apron Transmission Driven Sprocket. Replace­ ment 1/4 x 1 Shear Bolts and Locknuts can be obtained in packaged quantities of eight bolts and nuts by GEm... part number 900091. If the Conveyor Apron Drive Shear Bolt has sheared, exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8) and rotate the Beater(s) backwards by hand, to align the holes for replacing the Bolt. If the Beater(s) can NOT be rotated, exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8) and remove the Telescoping PTO Drive from the tractor PTO shaft to align the Shear Flange holes.

NOTE:

The Apron operates whenever the tractor PTO is engaged. When the Apron is on, if the load of manure does NOT move towards the Beater(s), exer­ cise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PRO­ CEDURE (page 8) and check to see if the Apron Drive Shear Bolt has failed. Correct the causers) of Shear Bo/t(s) failure before proceeding.

When Spreader is nearly unloaded, pull the Rope to move the Control Indicator into the "Fast" position. In the "Fast" position, the Beater is on and the Apron is running in high.

Main Drive Protection (Fig. 6-7)

PTO is being engaged at too high an RPM.

Replacement 1/4 x 1-1/2, Grade 8 Bolts and 1/4 Lock­ nuts can be obtained in packaged quantities of eight bolts and nuts by GEHL ,part number 080079. If the Main Drive Shear Bolt has sheared, exercise the MAN­ DATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8) and rotate the Beater(s) backwards by hand, to align the holes for replacing the Bolt. If the Beater(s) can NOT be rotated, exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8) and remove the Telescoping PTO Drive from the tractor PTO shaft to align the Shear Flange holes.

A foreign object is caught in Beater(s) or Beater is frozen tight.

3.

Beater was NOT engaged when starting to un­ load. BE SURE to engage Beater after Spreader is unloaded and before starting to unload next load.

UNPLUGGING

A WARNING When any part of the Spreader becomes plugged, stop the unit IMMEDIATELY. NEVER leave the tractor seat to unplug the Spreader NOR attempt to climb Into the Spreader Box without first exercising the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8).

The following are probable causes for PTO Drive Shear Bolt failure:

Beater(s) will probably have to be unloaded with a pitch fork so that the Beater(s) are free to rotate. After unplugging, replace any Bolts which may have sheared and BE SURE that the Control Indicator is in the .

"Start/Slow" position BEFORE restarting the tractor and engaging the PTO.

CHAPTER 7 ADJUSTMENTS

A CAUTION BEFORE proceeding to perform any adjust­ ments on the Spreader, exercise the MAN­ DATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8).

APRON DRIVE TRANSMISSION INPUT (Fig. 7-3) Chain Tension Blocks are provided for the Drive Chains on the Apron Drive Transmission. Chain ten­ sions should be checked after every 50 hours of opera­ tion. Chain tension is adjusted by loosening the Bolt and adjusting the Block position on either Chain.

APRON CHAIN TENSION (Fig. 7-1 & 7-2) Apron Chain tension should be checked after every 50 hours of operation. Apron Chain tension is important because too much slack will cause the Chain to ride off the Sprockets and, too much tension will cause prema­ ture wear and early failure of the Chain and/or Sprock­ ets. Adjust the Take-up Bolts, on both front comers of the Spreader Box Frame,evenly until the Chain is 1/2" (13 mm) from the Channel Crossmember at the rear of the Spreader.

In freezing temperatures, BE SURE to keep the Box Floor and Apron Chain Slats clean. Operate the machine empty (before loading) to make sure nothing is frozen tight.

The Main Drive Chain, located in the front of the Spreader, is provided with a Chain Tightener Block. To adjust Chain tension, remove the Front Cover and ad­ just the position of the Block until the proper Chain tension is obtained. Chain tension should be checked after every 50 hours of operation. The Chain is proper­ ly tensioned when it can be deflected approximately 1/4 to 1/2" (6 to 13 mm), with hand pressure applied at the midpoint of the Chain, between the Drive and Driven Sprockets.

Referring to the Beater Clutch "Fast" Position Adjustment Detail, move the Front Shift Lever to the 2nd Notch ("Fast") position. Adjust the Cable length, on either end as required. so that the 2nd Speed Clutch just reaches the point of full engagement and the Compression Spring is still maintaining tension on the Washer and holding it against the Front Sliding Pivot. This will be evi­ dent when there is "0" clearance between the 2nd Speed Clutch Jaws. Check the indicated Washer;

if it is loose. the Cable will have to be adjusted longer until the Washer is tight.

NOT, repeat step 2 and then, recheck the Clutch adjustment. If the 1/16" (1.6 mm) Gap can NOT be attained, it may be necessary to add Washer(s) between the Rear Sliding Pivot and Roll Pin to increase the Gap or Washer(s) may have to be removed to reduce the Gap.

CHAPTER 8 LUBRICATION

A CAUTION NEVER attempt to lubricate the machine when any part of the unit Is In motion. ALWAYS BE SURE to exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8) BEFORE proceeding to lubricate this machine.

It is well to remember that a sufficient amount of oil or grease will prevent excessive part wear and early failure.

TRANSMISSIONS Periodically check the oil level in each Transmission using the Dipstick, where provided. In the Beater Drive Transmission, replenish the oil, as necessary, with SAE #90 gear oil. For the Apron Drive Transmission, use only special GEHL Gear Lube (Part Number 090685). Special GEHL Gear Lube MUST be used to promote long life and avoid component breakdown and early failure.

OILING Lubricate all Drive Chains every 10 hours of operation using a good grade of foaming aerosol lubricant. The recommended method is to spray the entire length of Chain on the center of the Rollers. It is better to lubri­ cate Chains when they are warm (after use, rather than before).

In addition to the Roller Chains, apply oil or foaming aerosol lubricant to the Telescoping PTO Drive Guard and the Upper Beater Drive Chain (where provided).

GREASING (Fig. 8-1) Wipe dirt from the Fittings before greasing to prevent any dirt from being forced into the Bearings or pivots.

Replace any missing Fittings, when noted. To mini­ mize dirt build-up, avoid excessive greasing.

NOTE: In addition to the Fittings, inspect and repack the Wheel Bearings at least once a year.

Whenever possible, trained personnel should be called to service and/or mount tires. Lubricate both the tire beads and rim flan­ ges with a soap solution. Do NOT use 011 or grease.

Check the Spreader Tire pressure after every 50 hours of operation. Tires should be inflated to the appropriate pressure listed in the Table. Wheel Lug torque should be checked after every 50 hours of operation and tightened to 125 ft-lb (170 Nm) torque.

• Use a Clip-on tire chuck with a remote hose and gauge which allows you to stand clear of the tire while Inflating It. • NEVER Inflate beyond 35 PSI (240 kPa) to seat the beads. If beads have NOT seated by the time the pressure reaches 35 PSI, deflate the assembly, reposition the tire on the rim, relubrlcate both parts and re­ Inflate It. Inflation pressure beyond 35 PSI with unseated beads may break the bead or rim with explosive force sufficient to cause fatal or serious Injury.

• After seating the beads, adjust the Infla c tlon pressure to the recommended operat­ Ing pressure listed.

• Do NOT weld, braze, or otherwise attempt to repair and use a damaged rim.

CHAPTER 10 PREPARING FOR FIELD OPERATION ASSEMBLED SPREADER GEHL Box Spreaders have a Beater Clutch which con­ trols operation of the Beater. Before loading Spreader and before engaging the PTO to unload the Spreader, BE SURE the Control Indicator (on the front of the Spreader) is in the "Start" position. Then, engage the

PTO at a low RPM. Shear Bolt overload protection is provided for both the Apron Drive and Main Drive Shaft. Refer to the Operation chapter for additional details. If Spreader is going to be operated in freezing temperatures, BE SURE to review and comply with recommendations set forth in the Operation chapter, under the Winter Operation topic.

CHAPTER 11 TRANSPORTING REFLECTORS & SMV EMBLEM (Fig. 11-1) For towing the Spreader on a public highway after dark, Red Reflector Strips are provided on each rear corner. Unless prohibited by local codes, use a slow­ moving vehicle emblem (purchased locally) when transporting Spreader on a public highway. A Bracket is provided on the left rear side of the Spreader for mounting the emblem.

A CAUTION ALWAYS follow state and local regulation regarding use of a safety chain and auxiliary lighting when towing farm equipment on public highways. ONLY a safety.clla.ln. (NOT an elastic or nylon/plastic tow strap) should be used to retain the connection between the towing and towed machines, In the event of separation of the primary attaching system.

BE SURE to check with local law enforcement agencies for your own particular regulations.

Unless otherwise prohibited, use a Slow­ moving Vehicle Emblem. NEVER . tow a Spreader on a public highway at a speed greater than 20 mph (32 kmh)

SAFETY CHAIN & AUXILIARY LIGHTING (Fig. 11-2) As required or when desired, the Spreader can be equipped with a Safety Chain for travel on public highways. Refer to the Optional Features & Acces­ sories chapter for ordering information. The Safety Chain should be attached to the tractor and Spreader as shown. When attached in this manner, the safety chain should have the following characteristics: 1.

Chain is sufficiently slack to allow turns and movements of either the tractor or the farm im­ plement, without placing tension on chain.

Chain is of sufficient strength to hold the decoupled implement (and its load) and tow it to the shoulder.

CHAPTER 12 STORAGE Because a Manure Spreader is year-round implement, it should be inready-to-operate condition at all times.

Several provisions have been designed into the Manure Spreader to enable it to be used in cold, moderate and warm outside temperatures. The most important factor for continuous proper operation is lubrication. Routine

lubrication should be repeated more frequently in both temperature extremes.

NOTE: When operating the Manure Spreader in freezing temperatures, the unit should be stored in­ side, if possible. Refer to Operation chapter for special operating procedures in freezing temperatures.

CHAPTER 14 SET-UP & ASSEMBLY GENERAL INFORMATION The following procedures should be performed inside an enclosed workshop which is equipped with the proper tools and an overhead hoist. Although the pro­ cedures imply a single set-up person, two people can and will be able to assemble the components to the machine more quickly and easily.

Unless otherwise noted, the standard fastening proce­ dure is to secure two parts with a Cap Screw or Bolt, Lock Washer and Hexagon Nut. A part with a mounting slot should be secured with a Plain Washer against the slotted surfaces. Lock Nuts are sometimes used to prevent two parts from separating but still to allow one part to move or rotate next to the other. Attaching hardware. which will require installation in the path of material flow should always be installed with the head of the screw on the same side of part which will be in contact with the material.

TIRES, WHEELS & AXLES

Tire Mounting

A CAUTION If Spreader Is ordered without mounted tires, It Is recommended that tire mounting ON LV be attempted by a qualified tire manufacturer's Installer or by properly trained personnel ac­ cording to the manufacturer's Instruction. If you do NOT have such Instructions, contact your tire dealer or the Company. In addition, remember that all truck-type tires MUST be mounted with Inner tubes. Inflating or servic­ Ing tires can be dangerous. Whenever pos­ Sible, trained personnel should be called to service and/or mount tires.

Use an overhead hoist to remove all of the components which were shipped inside the Spreader. After the parts are removed. safely and individually raise each side of the Spreader using an overhead hoist or hydraulic jack.

NOTE: BE SURE to use a long lifting chain or spreader bar when hoisting to avoid distorting the Spreader Box. Before hoisting. properly block the side NOT being raised. Then, proceed to mount the Wheels and Tires.

Attach the Wheels with the Lugs furnished and torque the mounting hardware to 125 ft-lb (170 Nm).

ACCESSORY COMPONENTS

A WARNING Before proceeding to Install any of the Acces­ sory components, properly support the Spreader A-Frame with the Hltchjack. BE SURE that the Lockpln Is properly Installed and seated through both holes In the Hltchjack Tube and mounting Hub, on the A­ Frame. Place blocks In front of and In back of both Spreader Tires to prevent any movement or otherwise attach the Spreader to a tractor.

Do NOT attach the PTO Telescoping Drive.

NOTE: The following information for each acces­ sory, as applicable, is divided into two sections; Genera/Information and Special Procedures. Refer to the exploded-view drawings and associated parts lists for assembly details. On hydraulically-powered acces­ sories, Quick-disconnect Fittings, to match your tractor remote outlets MUST be purchased locally. Use Loc­ tite~ (or equivalent pipe sealing compound) to insure leak-free pipe-threaded connections.

Special Installation Notes 1.

The two Elbow Fittings (between the Tubes and Hoses to the Cylinder on the left side) should be removed and replaced with the Tee Fittings shown at the ends of the Crossover Tubes. Then,

After the right Cylinder, Hoses and Crossover Tubes are interconnected, the Crossover Tubes should be anchored at about the middle of the Spreader Box floor with the Special Bolt, two Clamps and Locknut as shown. After making sure that the Apron Slats are NOT in the path of the anchor bolt, drill a 13/32" diameter hole through the Box Floor from under the Spreader. Then, pass the Special Bolt through the 13/32" hole (from the top down) and install the two Clamps around the Crossover Tubes and secure them with the Locknut provided.

Litter Pan General Information

Using the tractor hydraulic remote control, activate the Endgate Control Cylinder to fully extend the Cylinder and completely raise the Endgate. Then, slightly retract the Cylinder (about 1") so that the Cylinder is NOT in its extension state. Shut off the tractor engine and make sure that the Endgate is stable (NOT moving downward).

At the back end of the Spreader and by hand, completely open the Litter Pan and carefully block the Litter Pan completely open.

When the Litter Pan is installed in conjunction with a Hydraulic Endgate, the Control Cable MUST be routed through the Guide Assembly and up to the Yoke of the Left Endgate Control Cylinder and anchored around the Cylinder Yoke Clevis with the Cable Clamp provided.

When the Litter Pan is NOT installed in con­ junction with a Hydraulic Endgate, the short Control Cable (furnished with the Litter Pan package) is replaced by a long Control Cable which is furnished with the Litter Pan Manual Trip Lever Package. When the Manual Trip Lever is installed, the long Cable is routed from the Litter Pan Control Lever through all of the Rope Guides, along the left side of the Spreader, and connected to the Manual Trip Lever per details under that topic.

When the Litter Pan is installed in conjunction with a Hydraulic Endgate, the opening of the Litter Pan is activated by the extension of the left Endgate Control Cylinder. To obtain the proper Cylinder extension and Litter Pan Control Cable length adjustment, three initial conditions should be established before the Control Cable is con­ nected around and anchored to the Cylinder Yoke Clevis.

Then, carefully remove the Litter Pan block and test the operation by extend­ ing and retracting the Endgate Cylinder to raise and lower the Endgate. Readjust the Cable length as required so that the Litter Pan opens complete­ ly just before the Endgate is completely raised.

Litter Pan Manual Trip Lever Package After the Litter Pan package is installed and instead of installing the short Endgate-controlled Cable, anchor the long Control Cable, furnished with the Manual Trip Lever Package, to the Litter Pan Control mechanism in the same manner illustrated with the Litter Pan draw­ ing. Then, route the long Control Cable through the Rope Guides and up to the top front left corner of the Spreader. Per the exploded-view drawing and as­ sociated parts list, install the components of the Manual Trip Lever mechanism and connect the Control Cable to the Trip Lever as illustrated. The Side Rails are likewise con­ veniently attached to the top edges of each side of the Spreader Box using hardware provided.

LITTER PAN If the Spreader is going to be transported on a public

highway. a Litter Pan (804867) should be obtained and installed to prevent manure from falling-out the back of the Spreader and onto the highway. The Litter Pan package is designed to be used in conjunction with an accessory Hydraulic Endgate or without an Endgate provided a Manual Trip Lever package is separately ordered and installed.

LITTER PAN MANUAL TRIP LEVER PACKAGE If the Spreader is equipped with a Litter Pan but NOT

equipped with a Hydraulic Endgate package a Litter Pan Manual Trip Lever package (804864) MUST be ordered and installed separately.

NEW DECAL APPLICATION

Decal Locations infonnation is provided to assist in the proper selection and application ofnew decals, in the event the original decal(s) become(s) damaged or the machine is repainted. Refer to the listing for the illustration reference number, part number, description and quantity ofeach decalprovided in the Kit Refer to the appropriate illustration(s) for replacement location(s).

Surfaces MUST be free from dirt, dust, greaseand otherforeign material before applying the new decal. To apply a solid­ fonned decal, remove the smaller portion of the decal backing paper and apply this part of the exposed adhesive backing to the clean surface while maintaining proper position and align­ ment Slowly peel off the other portion of the backing paper while applying hand pressure to smooth-out the decal surface.

Refer to the SAFETY Chapter of the Operator's Manual for the specific information provided on al/ of the various Safety Decals furnished in the Decal Kit(s).
