Danville Merchant Chatter Ruff House Adventures “Four on the Floor” Are you tired of your dog jumping on you or other people? Does your dog get excited when you come home? It’s great they are excited to see us, but getting scratched doesn’t feel that good. Or you may be tired from work, and don’t have the energy at the moment. This is a common issue, and with a little training this behavior could be fixed. Continue reading if this happens with your doggie. “Four on the Floor” is a great training tactic. At the times your dog jumps, don’t look at them or give any pats. You don’t want to reward the dog for doing a behavior that is not wanted. You should continue to ignore your dog until they have all four paws on the floor. Immediately reward after all their paws on the floor, start giving your dog some pats and “good doggie”. The Danville Town Council started the October 6 meeting with a resolution honoring Danville resident Connie Lawson for her many years of public service. Mrs. Lawson served as Clerk of Hendricks County from 1989-1996; served in the Indiana Senate from 1996 - 2012, where she was the first woman to serve and Majority Floor Leader; and served as Indiana Secretary of State from 2012 - 2021, making her the longest serving Secretary to date. In other business, the Council decided to stay with NFP as Insurance Agent of Record. A representative from Banning Engineering received permission to move forward with construction of the Clear Well Storage Tank for the new Water Plant in North Ellis Park. Anne Johannson received permission for street closures for the Scares on the Square event and the Danville Community Education Foundation’s Walk/Run the same evening, October 29. The Council heard from representatives of Civic Plus about a proposal to implement a new Web design for the Town that would connect with other towns and the county. The formation of a Community Development Corporation to assist with Economic Development was approved. The Fiscal Plan and Annexation for the Sparks property at 1509 10th St. were approved. An ordinance updating the 1998 Town Purchasing Agency and purchasing rules was approved. Also receiving approval was a text amendment to the Subdivision Control Ordinance. A public hearing on request for annexation of property at 538 N CR 50 E was opened and no comments were re-ceived. Also receiving a public hearing was the 2022 Budget. No comments were made; a vote will be taken at the next meeting. The 2022 Salary Ordinance was introduced. Parks Director Will Lacey received approval on a Capital Expenditure Request for $71,291 for power-washing, acid etching and painting of the pool basin.
Say It Ain’t So, Santa!
With little fanfare and quite a bit of the sound of chainsaws, the community Christmas tree on the north side of the court house yard was rcently cut down and cleared away. That tree was planted in memory of H. Hunt Palmer (1955-2000), a member of the Hendricks County Council (see photo at right). The tree was showing signs of damage with many of the interior branches broken off. A new Christmas tree was planted on the southside of the court house last July, a cooperative effort between the Downtown Danville Partnership, Hendricks County, and the Town of Danville. It will be several years before a ladder, let alone a scissor lift, will be needed to decorate the new tree, but Santa has entered it in his GPS.

Thanks to readers of The Republican who generously gave to the American Verteran Services Corp.’s Winter Coat Drive. Of the four drop-off locations around the county, we collected the most coats, hats, scarves and gloves to help keep veterans warm this winter.
Tri Kappa Poinsettia Sale
Brighten the coming holidays with poinsettias from the Alpha Associate Chapter of Danville Tri Kappa. Sales are underway with this year’s ordering deadline Friday, Oct. 22. All poinsettia sales are in advance and support local philanthropy. Poinsettias are available in two sizes and in an array of colors: 6.5-inch pots (with 7 or more blooms) are available in red, white, pink, marble, ice crystals (new color), and shimmer surprise; and 8-inch pots (with 15 or more blooms) are available in red, white, pink, marble and shimmer surprise. Prices are $9 for 6.5-inch pots and $16 for 8-inch pots. These extra nice poinsettias, grown by Heartland Growers, can be ordered from any Alpha Associate Chapter member. Poinsettias will be available for pickup on Tuesday, Nov. 23, at the Phi Delta Kappa house (802 Phi Delta Kappa Dr., Danville) – just in time for a Thanksgiving thankyou gift or holiday decorations for churches, businesses or your own home. The Alpha Associate Chapter of Danville Tri Kappa greatly appreciates the community’s support for its annual fundraising project.

HCHS Pet Food Pantry It was a glad occasion when the Gulley family of Danville got together and gained a member on October 2, for the wedding of Aaron and Taylor Sager. Phil performed the ceremony (at right), which took place at the Vornholt property in Danville. The Gulley siblings took the opportunity to pose by a mural by Julie Vornholt while they were together. Hendricks County residents needing pet food should call Hendricks Humane (317-745-3338) to leave a message stating their name, phone #, type and number of pets and any special needs. Requests for pet food called in by Monday are filled on Wednesday for porch pick up between 1-6 pm. Exceptions can be made as well as deliveries in specific cases. We want to be sure pets have food. The HCHS Pet Food Pantry is part of the County Food Pantry Coalition, and also participates in three Gleaners Mobile Food Pantry distributions.
