MRS. BETTY JANE VOLPP, the matriarch of the Volpp family from Danville, Ind., left this realm on the night of Monday, July 26, 2021. And she loved 50-cent words like ‘realm’, and ‘matriarch’, and phrases such as ‘shuffling off this mortal coil’. She died of natural causes at the age of 97½ years, in Muncie, Indiana. Mrs. Volpp was a smart, funny, beautiful lady of many creative and artistic talents. She was a voracious reader and avid follower of world events, as well as a curious and fascinated participant in the beauties and miracles of Mother Nature. The night skies full of the stars, planets, and the moon kept her up many hours every week. Her favorite constellation, as pointed out to all the grandkids and great-grandkids, was the Big Dipper. And yes, she was a night owl, always. Betty Jane was born in Mooresville, Ind. on January 18, 1924, the second child of Ralph Lee Cook and Jesse Clyda Thompson Cook. Her siblings were John Thomas Cook and Ralph Daniel Cook, both now deceased. She also lived at the Thompson family farm in Hazelwood, Ind. from approximately 1931 to 1943, then returned to the Mooresville home. Betty graduated from Clayton High School, class of ‘41 (serving as Drum Major with the marching band as a Senior). After high school, she commuted to her employment in Indianapolis for the duration of World War II. She married her wartime sweetheart, Russell F. Volpp, on August 31,1945 in Indianapolis, where they resided for 13 years with their family of three children - Mike, Ted, and Kit. In 1959, they moved to the farm property on the southwestern outskirts of Danville, which remained in the family until the end of 2020. Mr. Volpp died in August 2005, just shy of a 60th wedding anniversary. Betty Jane loved returning to the country life’s space and possibilities, right down to helping neighbors recapture the inevitable escaped farm animal. She reveled in the richness of all things outdoors - like the scent of newly turned field soil during spring planting season; and the music of spring peepers after dark. She loved the excitement of thunderstorms, the shapes of clouds, and the masses of evening lightning bugs in the summer; the varieties of trees and birds and flowers; the sounds of the creek flow, the colors of sunsets and autumn leaves, and being first to build a snowman in new snowfall. She loved life very much. In the early 60’s, Betty began her longtime membership in the Hendricks County Home Extension’s Mill Creek Homemakers Club. She earned many top award ribbons for her yearly exhibits at the County Fair with her extraordinary sewing and quilting skills and stuffed animal creations. She also belonged to a local quilting bee of many years’ duration. And she was a great cook and baker, too. Betty was a dedicated poll worker in most Hendricks County elections for many, many years. She was also very proud of her Hendricks County early settler heritage through her Thompson ancestors, and loved and supported the annual Thompson Family Reunion gathering which existed through its many descendants from 1912 to 2012. Betty Jane was a truly gifted Mother Hen to her family members: son Mike Volpp (Louise) of Muncie, Ind.; son Ted Volpp, Chicago, Ill.; and daughter Katherine Volpp Huggler (Gary), also in Muncie. Grandchildren are: Jeff (Shelli) parents of great grandchildren Emma, Mason, Jillian, & Courtney; Brett (Lauren) parents of great grandchildren Ramona & Jasper; Michele Volpp (Sam), parents of great grandchildren Milania & Soleil; Norah Volpp; Abby Huggler Gibson (Ryan), and Laura Huggler. A Celebration of Life gathering is planned for October, at Mill Creek Church, Danville, 1823 S County Road 250 W. Date and time will be announced later. Her chosen charity for any donation in her name is: Anatomical Education Program, Indiana University School of Medicine, 635 Barnhill Drive, Room MS 5035, Indianapolis, IN 46202 P.S. This bio has been slow in being published, in Betty’s dear honor. She was an accomplished late-aholic herself, and it is apparently a recessive gene. ___________________________________________________ JAMES ROBERT WARREN, 74, Brownsburg, passed away on August 20, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. This is provided by the Indiana Sate Department of insurance and funded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. “Our SHIP counselors provide free impartial information to assist consumers in making decisions regarding their Medicare choices and questions” states Deanne Sanders-Below, coordinator of In-Home Services at Hendricks County Senior Services. “Ship is not affiliated with any insurance company or agency and does not sell insurance. They are staffed by a crew of volunteer counselors who have completed intensive training to offer objective assistance in complete confidence,” states Below. SHIP is driven by volunteers who are committed to helping people with Medicare determine the best healthcare choices for their individual situations and to be good consumers of Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medigap, Part D Drug Coverage, Long Term Care Financing and Low-Income Assistance Programs. To become a SHIP counselor, you must complete a 30hour training, either virtually or in-person; complete volunteer shadowing, additional training in the spring and fall and have a desire to help Medicare Beneficiaries in your community.
