The Danville Town Council honored Rhonda Beck of Wa-Pe-Ke-Way Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, for her efforts to have military veteran banners placed in several Hendricks County communities.

The Proclamation read in part: “Rhonda E. Beck has made it her mission to ensure that we will always honor those who have so unselfishly served our Nation or take for granted their contribution and sacrifices...”

In accepting the honor, Ms. Beck thanked the Council for this recognition.

“I am humbled to receive this Proclamation for something that I truly enjoy doing-- working with and honoring veterans. It is such a rewarding experience to get to know, not only the veterans but their families; many of whom I now call friend.

“Thank you, not just to the Town leaders but the Danville residents for participating and being supportive of the many projects for veterans in Danville. It’s Ham Stand Time!

Boy Scout Troop 301 will be hosting it’s 63rd annual Ham Stand on Labor Day Weekend in the parking lot of The Mower Zone, 1120 W Main Street, Danville.

The Ham Stand provides whole, sliced and chopped hams that have been cooked on outdoor wood cookers by scouts, using a special sauce that is also prepared by the troop. In addition, scouting families provide homemade desserts that include apple pies, chocolate cake, and persimmon cookies.

Scouts work several shifts in jobs that range from cooking and cleaning to serving guests food. “It’s a great opportunity for our scouts to get hands on experience doing restaurant-type work,” said Andy Hardin, Scout Master. “Since restaurants are often kids’ first jobs, this is a great place try it out.”

Football Warriors Start A Quest for 21 Miles

Last season, the Danville Warriors took second place in theState Championship.

The Danville Football Warriors were back on the gridiron to start yet another quest to make a 21-mile trip in November.

Off of an exciting 2020 season that saw these Warriors playing at Lucas Oil Field in a championship match up against Bishop Chatard, this team was ready to start the journey to earn another trip to the big stage, this time hoping for a different outcome.

With excitement and players eager to get this season started, Danville traveled to Franklin Community High School in a test right out of the gate against a 5A school that was hungry for a successful season of their own. This was an important early opportunity for the Warriors to set the tone for the season ahead of them.

As this game began to take shape, it was tough to tell if it would be a battle of good defenses or offenses that might never find their groove. It was clear early on that Danville was uncertain about their kicking game. They were able to drive the ball deep into Franklin territory on two occasions but on fourth down, opted to go for it rather than kick a field goal each time. They would turn it over twice on downs and the first quarter would end scoreless.

The Warrior defense stepped it up in strong fashion early in the second quarter when Junior BJ Wuest, picked off a pass by the Franklin quarterback and ran it back 53-yards to the end zone, giving Danville an early second quarter lead, 7-0.

On the ensuing kickoff, Danville’s Colton Mosley recovered a fumble off of the Squibb kick by Caleb Harvey, giving the Warriors excellent field possession inside the Grizzlies 35-yard line. Unfortunately, the drive stalled at the Franklin 21-yard line after the Warriors turned it over on downs once again.

The defense continued to stand tall by forcing Franklin to punt on their next possession. Senior Brayton McMahon returned that punt eight yards giving Danville excellent field position at Franklin’s 40 yard line.

On the ensuring offensive possession by the Warriors, they would finally find their groove as the running game brought the offense to life with Senior Andrew Poppa leading the way. The drive was capped off with a one-yard quarterback keeper by Senior Kale Payne to put Danville up 13-0. The score would stay there as Harvey missed the PAT.

Payne connected on a long pass to Wuest, in what looked like could be the dagger in Franklin’s chances for an early big win. Unfortunately, Wuest fumbled the ball deep in Franklin territory, stopping what could have led to a commanding lead.

Franklin was apparently content trailing by two scores as they ran the clock out with Danville leading 13-0 headed into halftime.

Perhaps the coaching staff of the Grizzly Cubs knew what they were doing because the second half started much better for them than the first. Franklin would score 13 unanswered points in the third quarter knotting this one up at 13 apiece headed into the fourth quarter.

Danville was able to answer the scoring streak of the home team by methodically driving down the field, eating some clock, and finished when Payne connected with Senior Braxton Fulwider, who made a return to football after 5-year hiatus, from 29-yards out for the go ahead and winning score.

Many might say this was an ugly win, but as the saying goes, a win is a win. There is no doubt that Coach Comer will improve in areas where they struggled and build on the things they did right.

The journey for that 21-mile trip in November has begun.

Next week they host Mooresville to build on this early momentum.
