A MESSAGE FROM SUZANNE NELSON

Are you a planner, or are you a person who does things on a whim? If you’re a planner, maybe you’ve been running your whole life, or maybe you made a commitment to begin running after a major life change. If you aren’t, maybe you saw Brittany Runs a Marathon during a Netflix binge and bought your first pair of VaporFly trainers the next morning. Me? When it comes to everything outside of work, I’m the whimsical adventurer After I clock out, I crave the absence of structure!

The other day, I planted an entire farm’s worth of vegetable seeds in our tiny one-bedroom apartment all because I wanted a simple, old-fashioned tomato sandwich You know the kind – white bread, mayo, salt and pepper, and thick slices of a freshly-picked summer garden tomato so juicy that you have to eat it over the sink There’s really nothing like it, and store-bought, anemic tomatoes don’t have the same kick

You see, an onion sprouted in my kitchen, so I Googled whether I could grow this thing that decided to change its life, despite my determination to eventually cook it. Who am I to deny an onion of its destiny? Googling led to me thinking about that sandwich, and a visit to my ‘frenemy,’ Amazon Prime. Late-night Amazon purchases are never a good thing. The following day the delivery guy dropped off grow lights, plastic trays, warming mats, fertilizer (good heavens, that stuff smells rank!), potting soil, and every other thing imaginable Thaddeus and I are now destined to be the “weird place” in the neighborhood this summer We have a 15’x 5’ cement slab patio covered by our upstairs neighbors’ balcony I’ve never grown a plant in my entire life that hasn’t met an early demise I kill succulents, folks I am also wellaware that I am way behind, as I should have planted these things a few weeks ago My seedlings don’t know that – my dining room is filled with adorable little sprouts, and I dare not tell them I’m the worst plant mama in the world So far, they think I’m great and I won’t bust their bubble just yet But, you know what? I’m going to make it work Some of you are going to get my extra seedlings for your gardens, and many more of you will probably become the proud owners of the metric ton of zucchini that will try to take over my porch.

Running started like that for me, too. One day, I got up, put on some shoes, and just… ran. Didn’t even think about it – just… did it. What about you? Did you have a whim, where one thing led to another, and suddenly you found yourself running 5k’s on the weekends, shopping at local running shops for gadgets and gizmos, and prepping for your first marathon? Or were you the methodical type – you ran track in high school, and now that your family life is settled, you charted a training schedule for yourself and got down to business?

This month, I challenge you to do the opposite of what you normally do If you are a planner, I challenge you to sign up for an event on a whim Come join us on Motivation Monday evenings at the GLIRC Clubhouse and run an undetermined distance with some folks you’ve never met! Or, flip through these pages with your eyes closed, put your finger on a random event, and run it! The Greenbelt 25/50k is on May 13, and there’s even a relay option if you don’t feel like running very far! Grab three unwitting friends and make a day of it. If you’re a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants person like I am, set a clear goal. Do research, choose an event to work for, write it all down, and plan it out. Depending on your current training, target a 5k or a 10k. On May 21, enjoy a jaunt on the beach at the PSEG Long Island Spring 5k at TOBAY Beach Or, June 8, we are having the David Lerner Associates Police Appreciation 5k Run Perhaps you have some distance under your belt – you can easily build up to a 10k for the Panoply of Pride Presented by PSEG Long Island 10k Run at Sand City South in June, or you can plan to run your fastest 5k ever at the Runner’s Edge Long Island Women’s 5k Run Presented by Bethpage Federal Credit Union in July

Find your sprouted onion (RUNion, if you will?) and dream about your tomato sandwich Whatever your philosophy – organized visionary or impulsive quirk – and make it work

Cheers through the miles,

On a crisp but sunny spring morning over 200 runners lined up for the Gary Mintz Memorial Scholarship Run at Brentwood High school. The event was created in honor of one of the high school’s former principals, Gary Mintz. He was a principal at Brentwood High School from 1989 to 1995. After he passed away, his idea of creating a 5k race in the community to raise scholarship funds for the seniors of BHS was implemented by Mr. O’Brien, another former principal. This year marked the 28th year that the high school hosted the run to help more students pursue their college dreams!

MeetYourBoa r d GLIRC PresidentAlan Baisch

It’s been about 4 months since I became president of GLIRC, and it is an eye opener! For a sport that has given me so much, I want to return the favor. I think back to when I first started running. It was about 11 years ago at the Marcum Workplace Challenge. I enjoyed the comradery with the other runners, although I did not feel like a runner. I persisted and thought that for next year’s race I would train a little. Over time I would build up my mileage. Well, a year later a friend at work said I should run the Stony Brook Turkey Trot. I thought why not. Let’s give it a go. I went to the race in my sweatpants and sweatshirt, along with my best pair of sneakers that I used for mowing the lawn! I placed first in my age group. Since that moment, I started training more and more. At the time I lived in Selden and heard about a group of people that run the Selden Hills I lived in Selden and did not know it had any hills. Well, I can now say that it does have some painful hills! Like the runners they are, the runners of the Selden hills were very encouraging and helped me to get through it

Fast forward to this year and in January I was voted in as President of GLIRC. I have been on the board of Directors for several years and decided to step up if the need arose. I do have some experience with not-for-profit clubs that I belong to and have worked in thr past. I have been a former treasurer of the United States Air Force Academy Parents club of Long Island. I have been a past president of the "Long Island Systems User Group" (LISUG) (a technology group) and currently remain part of the board of directors. I am currently employed as Vice President of Information Technology for an Insurance company and enjoy playing with new technology.

I am fortunate to have many people on the board and in the office that bring a level of knowledge and experience that goes well beyond impressive. The time and effort they put in is amazing! I will try my best to bring better value to membership, reward volunteers in new ways, put on new races and to give back to the Long Island community. In the next few weeks, we will be announcing some new and exciting benefits to your membership.

In February 2023 I was awarded Long Island Track and Field Senior Men’s Athlete of the year. It was something that I would never have thought possible. Running is something that allowed me to meet many great people. I can honestly say that I have never met a runner that I didn’t like.

Common Foot Injuries For Runners

The foot is one of the most complex structures in the human body, containing 33 joints, 26 bones, and over a hundred muscles, tendons, and ligaments that must work together to support your body weight, absorb repetitive impacts, and propel your body forward. Given the intricacy and the amount of force and stress it absorbs, the potential for foot injuries for runners is not surprising.

Active Release Technique® (ART) can help relieve pain and improve function in the foot. ART® uses pressure to specific points on the muscles, tendons, and ligaments, to break up scar tissue and adhesions that cause pain and inflammation. ART® has shown to be effective treatment for a variety of foot problems, including:

● Plantar fasciitis - pain in the bottom of the heel caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot.

● Achilles tendonitis - inflammation of the Achilles tendon, located on the back of the heel.

● Metatarsal stress fractures - fractures of the bones in the foot caused by repeated stress.

Once you experience foot pain, it is important to consult with a sports injury specialist experienced with running injuries to assess the injury and discuss treatment options to keep you running. Often people consider a podiatrist first when dealing with foot pain, and they can provide certain solutions that help. However, most podiatrists cannot address soft tissue injury, or weakness and imbalances in other areas that may be causing the foot problem. A sports certified chiropractor, on the other hand, can assess foot problems and provide treatment and will also take into consideration the entire body and the kinetic chain for sources that could be the root cause of the injury

Active Release Technique® treats scar tissue and adhesions that are limiting movement and flexibility in the foot and the surrounding tissues. In conjunction with corrective exercises to address foot stability, strength, and arch support are critical to protecting the foot and supporting it will help avoid further injury and aggravation of it during training. Additionally a sports-certified chiropractor who specializes in running can analyze your gait to increase stride length, quicken your pace, and find the faults in your running pattern to identify why you are experiencing foot pain.

Active Release Technique® Helps You Recover Faster

Soft tissue restriction from injury, overuse or poor posture causes the muscle fibers to become shortened and tight. This results in pain, inflammation, and a decrease in range of motion. ART® releases these restrictions by lengthening the muscle fibers and restoring normal function. There are many benefits to treating foot pain and injury with ART®:

● Pain relief - ART® can help relieve the pain caused by a variety of foot problems, including plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and metatarsal stress fractures.

● Improved function - ART® can help to improve range of motion, flexibility, and strength in the foot.

● Reduced inflammation - ART® can help to reduce inflammation and swelling in the foot.

● Improved circulation - ART® can improve circulation in the foot, which can help reduce pain and speed up healing.

● Increased range of motion - ART® can increase range of motion in the foot, which can help prevent future injuries.

Active Release Technique® has been very successful in treating foot pain, and is why many sports teams have ART® practitioners on staff to treat athletes who develop foot problems. A sports injury specialist will provide specific treatment through manipulation of the nerves and the bones of the foot to encourage the release of trapped nerves and contribute to healing with increased circulation. Recommended exercises and stretches help improve the strength and flexibility of the arches, ankles and feet.

Treatment may range from joint mobilization and alignment techniques, to massage, muscle and joint stretches, as well as taping. Chiropractic treatment to correct spinal alignment is beneficial so the weight of the body is evenly spread across the feet. Biomechanically engineered custom orthotics have helped many runners with a neuroma and other foot problems. You can get your custom-made Foot Levelers orthotics at Jonas Chiropractic. Insurance may cover the entire product, depending on your coverage.

Active Release Technique® , Graston Technique and Cold Laser therapy have been proven to be one of the most effective, safe, and completely natural methods to treat pain and balance the body. ART® combines intense active movement-based massage and joint mobilization techniques, which sets it apart from passive massage and physical therapy At Cold Spring Chiropractic you receive a personal treatment plan geared to your training or recovery goals. We begin by understanding what you do, as it relates to your sport or daily activity, and create a plan with a goal. We are dedicated to keeping up with the most effective procedures that provide significant positive results. Our multidisciplinary approach leaves no stone unturned. Our approach is as unique as you are.

THE

SAFE CENTER

$66K AT FIRST ANNUAL 5K RUN/WALK ON APRIL 1, 2023

RAISES

“Don’t Be A Fool, Abuse is No Joke” Event Supports Victims and Survivors of Interpersonal Violence and Abuse

Bethpage, NY (April 1, 2023) – The Safe Center, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit, the leading victim service organization in Nassau County, raised $66,000 at its first annual 5K run, which started and finished at its Bethpage headquarters this past weekend on April 1. Runners braved the rain with the winner finishing in just 17 minutes.

The Safe Center is Long Island’s leading provider of services for victims of domestic violence, child abuse and interpersonal violence.

The run took advantage of the April Fool’s Day date by pointing out that "Abuse is No Joke.”

“It’s really about raising awareness and helping people better understand these issues,” said Joshua Hanson, Executive Director of The Safe Center. “Unfortunately, for a lot of people who don’t have experience with these issues, it can be a joke, it can be a punchline. We want to help people understand the real impact on individuals, families and communities that all of these issues have. All in the context of bringing people together and have a little fun on April Fool’s Day.”

The run was co-chaired by board members Laura Curran and Christine Egan. “I love running 5ks and think it’s a great way to pull people into a cause,” said Laura Curran, former Nassau County Executive and host of the “Cut to the Chase” podcast. “Because of a foot injury I will be raising (funds) not running this year.” Curran’s team has already received gifts or pledges totaling more than $10,000.

“I’ve been involved with The Safe Center for about 15 years and my passion for the work it does only grows with time,” said Christine Egan, of Garden City, who has run in several marathons over the years. “This race starts and ends at the Safe Center LI headquarters, which is a great way to show people where we do the work we do every day.” Egan’s team has raised more than $5,000. The day also featured a quarter mile fun run for novice runners and kids age 10 and under.

The Safe Center, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit, is the leading victim service organization in Nassau County, providing comprehensive and trauma-informed services for victims of interpersonal violence including domestic violence, child sexual and severe physical abuse, rape and sexual assault, human trafficking, and elder abuse. In 2014, The Safe Center was created by the merger of the Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence (founded in 1978) and the Coalition Against Child Abuse & Neglect (founded in 1979). This merger created a highly integrated service model to empower victims of interpersonal violence to recover from their abuse. The Safe Center operates a 24hour Hotline (516-542-0404) providing crisis intervention, access to services, and information and support Visit https://www tscli org for more information.

On a rainy April Fools Day Morning, runners braved the harsh conditions to come out in droves and support The Safe Center LI. Although the temps were mild, the rain and wind proved to be a formidable opponent for anyone on course. Of course, our top finishers overcame the course and laid down some speedy times despite less than ideal conditions! Longtime GLIRC member John Schmuck took the Men's Division win in a speedy 17:20 while GLIRC member Tara Fowler claimed the Women's Division overall victory in 19:33. Congrats to these two GLIRC members on a great race!

GLIRC Finishers include: John Schmuck (17:20), Tara Fowler (19:33.31), Shari Klarfeld (20:22 63), Joseph Thomas (21:17 30), Justin Tasolides (22:59 68), Stacey Holman (25:54.65), Susan Schmuck (27:43.02), Jonathan Golden (28:28.51), John Stauber (28:38.93), Jennifer Vargas (28:47.67), Steve Frankle (29:46.99), Megan Lutz (30:12.72), Christopher Duvally (31:03.63), Lauren Harnick (33:09.90), Robert Rate (33:23.55), Robert Goldfarb (37:06.97), Lance Margolin (37:50.36), Norman Hershkowitz (44:13.38), Ellen Decarmine (47:31.78), Vera Fichtelberg (48:28.50), Patricia Fichtelberg (48:29.03)

Bill Duerr- Thank you so much for our son's Hohoho 5K Sweatshirt and GLIRC merchandise. He’s so happy, and he’s been wearing it and the hat quite frequently. I’m pretty sure that he’s worn the junior tri shirts each week since he got them too. I’m so impressed by you and GLIRC, especially after reading your mission statement on your website too. Count us in to be sustaining members from this point onward!

Jodi & Richard Brodsky- Finished the Boston Marathon in 4:10:28 and 4:27:01. I finished strong and the last 3 miles were faster than my average pace. I was wearing wrist supports and I’ve never finished a marathon at a faster pace.

A Beautiful Day in the Trails

On a comfy spring morning, many of Long Island's trail enthusiasts took to Brookhaven to run this beautiful course. With great mixes of single and double track trail, this race is both fast and technical. At the finish, cheering spectators welcomed in Jessica Moore as the first race finisher, taking the win in the Female Division. In second was Heather Lynch and third went to Martina Nadeau. In the Men's Division it was Casey Lopez taking the win followed by Greg Pandolfo and Josh Rogienski.

Congrats GLIRC finishers: Pao Wang (01:10:51), Ronald Porter (01:26:32), Richard Blackmore (01:29:34), Nancy Cook (01:32:12), Liam Lanigan (01:34:21), Alyssa Corr (01:38:14), Maureen Stammers-Janzen (01:40:46), Michelle Maclellan (01:56:34)

Mini MightyMan Pool Triathlon

The perfect beginner race or early season warm up that includes a pool swim in the nassau aquatic center's 50 meter freedom pool. This race always shows the long island triathlon scene who is the next up and comer as well as who has been working hard all winter. this year was no exception! with heavy rains battering athletes on the bike course, and run soaked shoes waiting for them in transition, it was not a race day for the faint of heart. in the Men's division it was up and coming star, lightening warrior Matteo SOMMA who took the win edging out the n jersey veteran Yean JIMENEZ. while these two put on a clinic front it was Jonathan PALADINI who edged out the rest of th field to claim the third place spot. In the women's division was A. ONEIL taking the win, but get this, she is only 12 year old! this kid is showing that long island triathlon is heade a spectacular direction. Jessica ESTRELLA (14 years old) followed her in to claim the second spot and Libby EWING made it a close race to come in third.

glirc finishers include- mini MightyMan Pool Tri- Alex Elet (36:47.5), Thomas Mihailin (37:56.4), Brandon Worster (38:24.2), David Parker (43:33.2), Kieran Gibbons (44:44.4), Michael Pitzer (48:34.7), Jeffrey Reynolds (49:51.9), Steve Juchem (52:08.0), Sue Moller (52:18.4), Kathleen Cergol (55:14.9), Stephanie Templeton (01:01:00), Iqubal Nigel Hassan (01:01:34), Lucas Wassmuth (01:03:12), Scott Wassmuth (01:03:45), Joseph Maiorana (01:04:03)
