John Ericksen finishes the 1st annual Panoply of Pride 10K
Presented by PSEG Long Island

I want to personally thank Tracey Epstein for her service to GLIRC as Board Secretary and Chair of our Government/Compliance Committee. She was a wonderful addition to the board and donated a lot of time through her work. I’d also like to thank her for serving as Race Director of the Bond, Schoeneck & King, Kings Park 15K Run, Lynn Gartner Dunne, LLP Rob’s Run 5K and the ASPIRE 10K.

I wanted to thank you for putting on a wonderful run this past Sunday. The Panoply of Pride was one of the most joyful, fun, and inclusive events I have been privileged to enjoy. Held in my hometown, it was heartwarming to see so many members of my community out cheering us on. You are directly responsible for giving an opportunity for people to show love to a marginalized community. It worked! Congratulations!

The course was well marked and well staffed with enthusiastic volunteers. The encouraging words from them and our Suffolk police officers were a boost on that humid morning!

Sand City never disappoints, what a fun after party! The food, the drinks, the DJ and the drag queen performance were a blast.

I love this finishers medal, and the teddy bear for my age group placement. The bear is sitting proudly in my bookcase, a wonderful reminder of a great day.

I’m proud to be a member of an organization that supports charities who look to serve people in their time of need regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation, social or economic status.

People are people, love is love.

GLIRC has proven true what I’ve said since I started this journey towards health and an active lifestyle a few years ago.

Runners are the best humans.

Thank you.

DR.

KERNER

GLIRC would like to thank Terry Bisogno for all the races that he has announced and been a part of! Terry, our club and our entire running community would not be the same without you, you have brought so much joy into all our lives! THANK YOU FOR YOUR YEARS OF SERVICE!

Police Appreciation Run

On a beautiful, sunny, and still Thursday evening runners flocked to Nassau County's Eisenhower Park to show their support for the fine men and women of Long Island's Police Departments. In a tremendous showing of support for our Long Island Police Departments, runners took to the start line and ran their hearts out! In the Men's Division it was Jason Sinert who broke clear of Oscar Lorenzo around the 2 mile mark and put in a hard charge to the finish, crossing in 16:48, almost 20 seconds clear of Lorenzo, who came home in second with a time of 17:10. Third place went to Luke Jarski in a time of 18:06. In the Women's Divison it was Alyssa Knott taking the commanding win in a time of 19:49. The race for second place came down to a sprint finish, with Erin Blasdel-Gebelin grabbing the second spot in 21:08, just edging out Martha Delgado who crossed one second later on a time of 21:09!

After being postponed one week due to the wildfire smoke and air quality issues that were present on the original date of June 8th, the anticipation for this years event was at an all time high. The event most definitely delivered as the racing was fast and close, and the weather was perfect for running fast! As always many of the local Police Department Running Clubs were on hand to participate and we can not thank all of our participants enough for supporting the Police Crisis Fund to aid law enforcement officers and their families in emergencies. As always the first $1000 in proceeds also went to Nassau Police Running Club and it's Scholarship Fund. THANK YOU LONG ISLAND RUNNING COMMUNITY!

I have been a member of GLIRC for many years. I w January 2022. I remember attending my first GLIRC Membership s night. Being so new to running I kept hearing the term PR being u their awards I had to ask the woman next to be what PR meant. I e that night! I have run everything from 1 mile to a ½ marathon, to duathlons and this year my first triathlon. I joined the board to represent the back of the pack have not been on the podium but cross every finish line with a smi omplishment. My main focus on the board is to keep the training programs going. RunStart , RunSteady and RunSmart. It is amazing seeing a RunStart participant cross the finish line after running 1 mile “without stopping” when only a few weeks ago they could not run around a ¼ mile track. Hearing a RunSmart participant say “wow I just ran 7 miles I’ve never done that, and never thought I could”. If it wasn’t for these training programs, I don’t think I would still be running. After completing my first RunStart program I didn’t put in the work and didn’t process. During my second RunSmart program I met a group of wonderful women who became close friends and we dubbed ourselves the Blazin Bzzz. The Bzzz have been running together for over 7 years, and have travel together to many races. My hope is that GLIRC can continue the training programs so that we can encourage others to start or continue running. Participants that join the programs could also help to boost the membership of the club. On a personal note, I am married to my husband of 21 years Bill Torres. I am a Treasury Administrator for an eyewear company. In other words, I play with money. When I’m not running, I can be found in the dance studio studying and performing in Tap and Jazz dancing. My husband and I are the proud parents of two rescued Maine Coon Cats Alejandro and Rafael. I am here for the members of GLIRC. If you see me running a race or volunteering introduce yourself let me know how the board can make the club a better experience for you.

5 TIPS FOR RUNNING IN THE HEAT

As the temperatures soar during the scorching summer months, many runners face the challenge of training or running in the heat While it may seem daunting, with the right approach and precautions, you can still enjoy your runs and stay safe In this article, we present five essential tips to help you navigate running in the heat and make the most of your summer workouts 1

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate: Staying properly hydrated is paramount when running in hot weather Start by hydrating well before your run, consuming at least 16 to 20 ounces of water or a sports drink an hour before you head out During your run, aim to drink fluids every 15-20 minutes to replenish what you ' re losing through sweat Opt for water or an electrolyterich drink to restore your body's essential salts Remember, thirst is not always an accurate indicator of dehydration, so make a conscious effort to drink consistently throughout your run

2 Time your runs wisely: Timing your runs during the cooler parts of the day can make a significant difference in your comfort and performance Aim to run early in the morning or later in the evening when the temperatures are generally lower By avoiding the peak heat of midday, you reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses and allow your body to perform better If running during daylight hours is unavoidable, seek shady routes or consider indoor alternatives like treadmills or indoor tracks

3 Dress appropriately: Choose lightweight, breathable, and moisturewicking clothing to keep your body cool and dry during hot runs Opt for lightcolored clothing that reflects the sun ' s rays rather than dark colors that absorb heat Wearing a hat or visor can provide additional shade and protect your face from direct sunlight Don t forget to apply sunscreen to exposed skin to guard against harmful UV rays Additionally, consider wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes and enhance your visibility

4 Adjust your pace and expectations: Running in hot weather puts extra strain on your body, so it's crucial to adjust your pace and expectations accordingly Listen to your body and be prepared to slow down your pace or take walking breaks if needed Focus on maintaining a steady effort rather than trying to hit specific time

goals Remember, it's better to prioritize your safety and well-being over pushing too hard and risking heat exhaustion or heatstroke

5 Acclimate gradually: If you ' re not accustomed to running in hot conditions, it's essential to acclimate your body gradually Start by running shorter distances in the heat and gradually increase your mileage over time This allows your body to adapt to the higher temperatures and helps reduce the risk of heat-related ailments It may take a few weeks for your body to adjust fully, so be patient and attentive to any signs of heat stress

Running in the heat can present unique challenges, but with these five essential tips, you can make your summer runs safer and far more enjoyable!

Improve Your Performance with Better Posture

Runners are highly prone to musculoskeletal injuries due to the repetitive impact and stress placed on their bodies. Proper posture and body alignment while running is essential for injury prevention and optimal performance. Correct posture helps distribute forces evenly throughout the body, reducing the risk of excessive stress on particular muscles and joints. Additionally, it enhances the body's biomechanical efficiency, allowing for better stride length and reduced energy expenditure.

Chiropractic care focuses on identifying and correcting misalignments or subluxations in the spine and extremities. Correcting imbalances and restoring proper alignment will not only result in better posture, but also enhanced joint mobility, which promotes proper muscle function, leading to optimal body mechanics while reducing stress on vulnerable areas.

Improve your Posture and Performance with ART®

Active Release Technique (ART) is a manual therapy that restores normal tissue texture and function. By targeting adhesions and scar tissue that can develop in soft tissues due to the repetitive strain injuries from running, ART® can improve flexibility, and reduce pain, enabling runners to recover from injuries more quickly and effectively

Graston Technique employs specially designed instruments to detect and treat soft tissue restrictions. This therapy effectively addresses scar tissue and fascial restrictions, enhancing tissue mobility and promoting healing. Runners can benefit from improved range of motion, reduced inflammation, and accelerated recovery from injuries.

While both chiropractic care and traditional physical therapy aim to treat and prevent injuries, chiropractic care offers distinct advantages for runners:

Holistic Approach: Cold Spring Chiropractic takes a holistic approach to care, focusing on the whole body's alignment and function. By addressing underlying spinal and joint misalignments, we can help runners achieve long-lasting improvements in posture, biomechanics, and overall well-being.

Individualized Treatment: We provide personalized treatment plans tailored to each runner's specific needs, taking into consideration such factors such as gait analysis, training regimen, and individual goals to develop a comprehensive plan that addresses both current injuries and future injury prevention.

Non-Invasive: With an emphasis on non-invasive and drug-free treatments through manual adjustments, soft tissue therapies, and corrective exercises, we can promote healing and pain relief without relying on medications or surgical interventions.

Preventive Approach: We focus not only on treating existing injuries but also on preventing future ones. By addressing imbalances and dysfunctions in the musculoskeletal system, we help runners maintain proper biomechanics, reduce the risk of overuse injuries, and optimize performance.

Cold Spring Chiropractic gives you a personal treatment plan geared to your training or recovery goals. We begin by understanding what you do, as it relates to your sport or daily activity, and create a plan with a goal. We are dedicated to keeping up with the most effective procedures that provide significant positive results. Our multidisciplinary approach leaves no stone unturned. Our approach is as unique as you are.

Terry Bisogno Wins Bay Shore YMCA’s Great South Bay 5K, 6-3-23

Those seeking Truth in Headlines may briefly gripe that the real two winners of this breezy flat Bay Shore 5K are Anthony Bedford, 18, and spectacularly just FOUR SECONDS back the OTHER RACE WINNER, Elizabeth Caldwell, 27—17:25.37 to 17:29.66. “Phantastic photo phinish.” The other 247 excellent runners and walkers, and/or some combinations thereof, were treated to a decent day and a great race at the YMCA in Hon or of Judi. To me, and all my fellow and gal Circuit Runners, addicted to asphalt, the OTHER winner of the race was Long Island’s great friend Terry Bisogno, Voice of Long Island Running. I saw Terry at my warm-up, covered by his great smile, but he looked like he’d lost a lot of weight. I tried not to worry about him, but failed. You know Terry. Terry is the cool reverse of the old sitcom Cheers bar where everybody knows your name. Why? Because Terry knows EVERYBODY in the race, and ann ounces you blasting over the Finish Line, as fast as your tired old knees will allow Of course, he gets the names from the numbers across your chest, but he also acknowledges something good about you, and what you mean to our running community. Terry also knows good stuff about runners, and everything he says about you is cheery and upbeat. He calls me Long Island’s Historian, and he probably praises you as a speedy kid having a great race who just womped the Historian, again, who se excuse is “my feet just didn’t go fast enough.” We all had a great time at the Islip 5-Miler five years ago, when my calf muscle made me run BACKWARDS over the line like Danny Badalament did in the Long Island Marathon, and Terry kidded me at the time, and still kids me about it.

Kudos to you 249 runners and the rest of you supporting them on the sidelines. Great races were delivered in the approaching-middle-age zone by GLIRC runners in all age zones, plus Bohemia, Northport, Seld en Hills, LIRRC and the rest. Here are a few highlights, and their respective speedy times for any age, but especially THEIR ages: Sayville’s supersonic semi-senior citizen Chuck Otto, 67, 23:51, Bohemia’s incredible Islip Pam Brown [70-74] in 30:18, edging out her worthy competition by 12 MINUTES; the M70-74 swoop showdown with Bellmore’s John Neverka, 73 and 26:04 vs. RVC ’s Robert Raab, 74, and 26:22; Selden hills harrier and GLIRC Paul Bonanni ’s 24:47 took silver to W. Islip’s Michael Parisi ’s 24:19. In the half-centurion male 50-54 crew of semi-youngsters,

Huntington’s Brian Walls outran all but seven racers to #8 overall 19:07, while Joe Maiorana and his red, white, and blue regular running togs took 3rd 50-54 in 31:19.

Teen time: Tom and Geri Clements’ grandson Brayden Clements, 18, won 7th OV in 19:03, just behind teen emeritus Victoria Robitaille, 2nd female and #6 runner overall. Tanner Wissman, 14, ran a nifty 19:19 and 6:13 a mile to win the M 15 & Under category. At that age, I could make it all the way to second base! Brightwaters’ Ainsley Duke took gold F15↓ with 23:23, seven minutes ahead of her next competitor in the age group. Kevin Costello’s 35-39 victory in 18:42 nearly snuffed the six-minute mile., while this guy M. Dean, 80, took the Older Than the Other guys’ prize in 30:58, squelching the furtive ten-minute mile by a dandelion whisker (9:58). Dana Caruso, 42, won the Masters’ prize and vanquished the seven-minute mile (6:52) in 21:18. It ’s a great tour of the Brightwaters waterfront ne ighborhoods, on a rare day in June.

On our 58th anniversary July 3, 2023, Toni and I plan to be at our Oakland County, Michigan cottage. However, we wish we could be with you all that day, when GLIRC has apparently planned a Tribute Race by his house for TERRY BISOGNO, who has been suffering from a very serious illness I wish I could be there to say a few words for him, as I did when he lent me his microphone for one minute in Bay Shore’s Judi 5K on JUNE 3 rd . Apparently, this race will go right by his house. All the best to you and to GLIRC, and especially to Terry Bisogno, a great masters’ runner, and an even greater friend over many years of Glory Days, and my not-so-glorious ones, too. My Dearborn high-school friend Fr. Rick Cassidy, a Metro Detroit priest and marathoner, talks about running the good race, from the Bible somewhere. Terry Bisogno has not only run it, he has called the roll up yonder on all our community stages in all our races for all these roaring ye ars. Thank you, Terry. You’re a wonderful friend to us all, and we appreciate all you’ve done to recognize us for our hard asphalt efforts, in sunshine and in shadow.

Maury Dean, 6-28-23, my “Half-Birthday ”
