It’s that time of the year. The crocus stick up their heads to remind us that all those Winter runs were worthwhile.
After the New York Marathon, the time changes. It becomes dark for those morning runs. Coupled with the morning chill, it’s that much harder to get out the front door.
It’s a chore to maintain high mileage weeks to attempt to prepare for the Boston Marathon. That race has gone off a hot as 96 degrees. It’s very difficult to take those dark morning runs, run thru snow, sleet and chill in order to be ready for that springtime marathon.
We are over that hump. It is lighter in the mornings. Occasional 50 or 60 degree days, bring the promise of even warmer weather, comfortable runs and less bulky three levels of clothing.
Spring is here! And with it come an increased number of races. GLIRC has a series of promising events. The rites of Spring start with Aspire 10K on April 29 th . We have a new course this year with a little bit more of a challenge. Start and finish will be at the usual Howard B. Mattlin Middle School, 100 Washington Ave, Plainview, NY.
June 8 th will feature the ever popular David Lerner Associates Long Island Police Appreciation Run.
With the popularity of our brewery runs, we will be adding an event with the cooperation of Sand City Brewery of Lindenhurst. There will be our usual popular runs. Prepare for our 25K and 50K Greenbelt Trail Runs, our ever popular Womens Run on July 8 th and of course the largest run of the year, the Marcum Workplace challenge. So, get by your favorite running store, make sure you have the right equipment, and come out and celebrate Spring Fever. Get ready and plan to get to the GLIRC races this Spring.

On a warm, clear, and uncharacteristically calm day at Hechsher State Park the nations best ultra distance road athletes lined up looking to take battle it out for the title of National Champion. Along them at the start line was many of Long Island's finest athletes looking to battle for Age Group National Titles and many just looking to check "run a 50K" off their lists! At 8:30am the athletes took off in search of 50K success, some took the first of 10 5K loops conservative, and others went out fast, but only time would tell which strategy would be most effective on the day
Among those that went out fast was Charles Smogoleski, clocking a 5K split of 17:12 for his first two laps. While Charles was out front putting a gap on his competition Kallin Carolus Khan was patiently negative splitting his first 4 laps, going from 17:23 to 16:58 by lap four. At this point it was obvious that Charles would have to start bringing down the pace if he wanted to hold on to his lead, and so he did. For a few laps the two ran within striking distance of each other, with Khan taking the lead, but not by much. It was not until Lap 8 when Khan made finally broke Smogoleski by continuing to split 17:30s, it seemed as though Smogoleski's early pace was catching up with him and Khan just needed to hang on at his extremely consistent pace. That he did, crossing the line in 2:52:49, claiming the 2023 50K road National Championship! Charles Smogoleski crossed second in 2:55:09 and Mike Katsefaras put in a huge late race dig to claw back within striking distance of Smogoleski to finish third in 2:55:48.
In the Elite Women's race we saw much more even and smooth initial laps, with Andrea Pomaranski taking the early lead and putting in incredibly even splits all race long to continually and steadily build her lead on Brittany Charboneau who also continually put in steady low 19 minute 5Ks
to build a gap on Melissa Tanner who was consistently splitting low to mid 20 minute 5K splits At the finish it was a consistency show for the Women's Race with those three holding strong and finishing with similar 5K splits on lap 10 as on lap 1! Andrea Pomaranski took the win in 3:07:50, Brittany Charboneau took second in 3 :13:29, and in third it was Melissa Tanner in 3:21:46
In the 50K Age Group race we saw an incredible display from three star Long Island runners, and all GLIRC members! Boyd Carrington who won the M50-54 Age Group National Championship in an impressive 3:24:15, Leah Jantzen won the F50-54 Age Group National Championship in 4:05:56, and Trent Hampton won the M40-44 Age Group National Championship in 4 :28:01
Congrats on bringing home these National Championships to Long Island!!

Thanks to all runners and volunteers who made our 2023 race a success, and thank you for allowing me to serve you as Race Director Pandemic issues prevented us from holding this event in 2022 and 2020 so we were thankful to be able to get back to the roads of Kings Park on March 18th
We had a much smaller field this year with 220 finishers
Regretfully we had to change the race date to the 18th, the same weekend as the NYC Half, after having initially scheduled it for the 25th We are implementing processes to prevent that from happening in the future
Although rain was initially in the forecast, we ended up with a chilly and somewhat windy morning without precipitation
Feedback was positive on the course, our volunteer support, the ‘athletic green’ race sweatshirt, our new ‘pub glass’ awards, and our post-race snacks and beverages Thank you to everyone who took time to complete the post-race survey! A few additional details:
We did our best to order a variety of sweatshirt sizes, but we ran out of mediums We will be guided accordingly with future orders. We will also order a few more in the XXL size It is difficult with so many runners signing up during the week or two before an event, as our orders have to be placed earlier
We will order more post-race bananas We are seeking quality gluten-free items to have post-race. We will also try and keep the canned beverages cold, and add hot beverages if possible
We will add a second portable toilet at another spot on the course (we only had one at mile 4)
We will add a water stop somewhere before mile 4
Look forward to seeing you on the roads and at future races!
The Bond, Schoeneck & King, Kings Park 15K Run, A Long Island Track and Field Grand Prix Series Race was held on March 18th 2023. The race spanned the rolling hills of Kings Park and tackled the steep Kohr Road climb. Athletes were greeted with an unseasonably warm morning, perfect for fast running and fun with friends on course. On the Men's side it was a battle all race between Jossi Fritz-Mauer and Scott Bickard. The two ran stride for stride until the 8 mile mark when Bickard made his move He slowly crept away from Fritz-Mauer to break the finish tape in 51:59, Fritz-Mauer followed closely behind in 52:08 Third place went to Michael Herbert who had a strong day, running 54:31. In the Women's race we saw Elizabeth Caldwell take charge of the race in the early miles to build a healthy lead before the finish, she crossed the line in 57:45. Second place overall and first place female masters went to non other than Kelly Perno-grosser in 1:01:12. Third place went to Lauren Jasinski in 1:05:46. In the Male Masters Division it was long time star runner and recently crowned 50K Age Group National Champion, Boyd Carrington in a time of 55:46
After the race was over runners were greeted with an array of bagels from Smithtown Bagel and some delicious muffins, generously donated by Rockland Bakery. The post race ceremony also had vendors including Orange Theory fitness and raffles including a beach cart donated by Clayton Funeral Home of Kings Park. As always runners earned a high quality hoodie and award recipients earned a nice 20 oz glass award!

Colleague of Dr. Lawrence Lembo FOR OVER 20 YEARS HELPING ALL LEVELS OF RUNNERS, FROM BEGINNERS TO TRIATHLETES
Runners can gain so much more from cross-training than just recovering from injury Cross-training can make you a stronger, more flexible, well-rounded athlete. By adding alternative non-impact exercises to your workout routine you will not only reduce your risk of injury but also improve your overall performance by increasing aerobic fitness, power, and efficiency In addition to improved fitness and endurance, while giving your overused muscles and joints a rest, cross-training can also help your motivation by rejuvenating the mind and body from training ruts. Supplement your running with strength training, flexibility exercises, and non-impact endurance sports such as bicycling and swimming and reap the benefits:
Doing the same workout that use the same muscles inevitably leads to overuse injury Runners looking to reach a speed or distance goal may push their skills and overtrain. This can lead to injuries that sideline you and halt your progress. Instead of using the same joints and muscles over and over, cross-training engages a variety of muscle groups. By replacing recovery runs with easy non-impact workouts such as bicycling, swimming or pool running, you reduce the amount of repetitive impact on your legs, hips, and feet, and thereby reduce injuries without sacrificing fitness.
Another benefit of cross-training is greater aerobic capacity When you increase speed or distance, you should stick to the 10% rule, which limits how much more you can train each week. When you add cross-training, switching to a different exercise allows you greater training volume, which increases your stamina without overusing the muscles, joints and tendons used in running. By expanding your aerobic capacity over time you will find that your stamina improves overall. By adding non-impact exercises you can increase efficiency, strength, and power, without additional breakdown, fatigue or injury
For runners who focus on endurance or speed, strength training often provides a boost in performance. By incorporating resistance training into your routine, you'll improve your performance more than running alone. Many running injuries are caused by instability in the hips, knees, and ankles due to weakness in the stabilizing muscles. Strength training to address specific weaknesses will alleviate the stress on joints and tendons. Strength training, especially jumping drills and plyometrics, helps increase stride length which translates into less ground contact and consequently less injury and faster race times.
Dynamic stretching movements enhance performance by mimicking the way your muscles and connective tissues actually stretch during running. Performed regularly it reduces the internal resistance in the muscles and joints used in your running movements, which will increase the efficiency of your stride. By working different muscle groups, cross-training helps develop greater dynamic flexibility
When you perform a new exercise, a whole new set of joints, ligaments and muscles are stretched out, which increases flexibility throughout your body This increased flexibility and reduced internal resistance in your muscles and connective tissues make your body able to adapt and respond faster as you run.
Cross-training enables your body to recuperate faster from injuries, and in some cases, the alternative exercises directly improve the condition caused by your running activity The best alternatives that most closely simulate the action and demands of running are pool running, elliptical training, bicycling, and inline skating.
Our goal is helping every athlete reach their performance goals. We design athlete-specific treatment plans that take into consideration your individual training goals, using joint mobilization techniques with soft tissue repair in addition to the strengthening and coordination regimens offered by physical therapy As athletes we understand the need to repair injury without losing valuable training time.
Active Release Technique® is intense active movement-based massage treatment, which sets it apart from passive massage techniques and physical therapy treatment. ART® promotes faster recovery, restoration of normal tissue function and helps prevent injury by reducing scar-tissue build-up and promoting ideal muscle length through the healing process. While other therapies can provide relief, ART® combined with stretching and exercise heals tissue in the shortest time with the lowest incidence of reinjury
Dr Jon DeGorter specializes in treating runners and triathletes, and is well versed in injury prevention and rehabilitation keeping athletes doing what they like to do!

Danielle Singson and Roxy Bianco- ran the Newport News One City Marathon in Newport News, Virginia on March 5, 2023. Danielle ran a 3:43:12 and Roxy ran a 4:39:51. A marathon PR for both!
Justin Tasolides- GLIRC members Tara Fowler and myself (Justin Tasolides) completing the Big LA 5K and the Los Angeles Marathon last Saturday and Sunday, finishing their LA Double Play challenge!
In the marathon, Tara rocked a 3:36:21 while I finished 4:27:24. Not a personal best for either of us -- humid, hilly, bad weather, etc. -but we had fun and did our best to rep GLIRC on the left coast! (We randomly met the dad of a past winner of the USATF 50K championship several years ago, who had wonderful things to say about GLIRC after all these years!)
Richard Holmes- For your enjoyment of trivia, if I make the time limit despite tearing my PCL knee ligament halfway through last weekend's Mississippi Trail 50K (which I still finished), this would be my 824th official marathon/ultra marathon, tying me for 10th place all time among runners from the western hemisphere.
Dee Ann Grappone and JoAnne Kong- ran the NYC Half Marathon on 3/19/23 J. Kong time 2:34:41, D. Grappone 2:57;44
Nick Palazzo- got his Lifetime membership jacket! Congrats Nick, and thank you for your years of service with the club!

With some amazing March weather, the March Classic Duathlon kicked off the years multisport season with a bang. With damp roads to start, athletes didnt seem to mind as the racing was top notch. Many athletes set some blazing fast times, this early in the year that can only mean we are in for one intense multisport season! Jerry Faulkner lead the way in the Men's Division with Andrew Cruz and Jonathan Paladini following close behind. In the Women's Division it was Tianna Biscone taking the win in commanding fashion and Jessica Perocho coming in second. Third went to Alexandra Teran.
NYTRI, a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) organization, is dedicated to carrying on the legacy founder Dan Honig left behind by continuing to produce triathlon, duathlon, and multi-sport events for educational, racing, physical fitness, and recreation. Thanks to the friendly and supportive atmosphere of the NYTRI community, membership typically includes novice to seasoned athletes from throughout the Tri-state (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut) area. In 2017, NYTRI was proud to have competitors from 10 different states to International attendees from across the Atlantic, representing the Czech Republic and Spain. Under the new leadership of Ron Darress, NYTRI will continue to offer the highest quality, multisport events in the NYC Metro and surrounding areas for years to come
Those of you who have been around the Long Island running scene for a few decades will remember Ralph Epifanio, his magazine Islandwide Runner, and the innovative racing events that he staged over the years, The Lobster Relay was an iconic “Ralph Race.” It featured teams of two, with each team member carrying a lobster for a mile run and then handing the lobster off to the second runner on the team to head for the finish line.
My wife Susan and my buddy Jim McDougall made their own “be kind to lobsters” statement by substituting a zucchini for their lobster I don’t remember how they did in the race, but they got lots of laughs for their creativity including laughs from Ralph!
-Mike PolanskyThe Rowley family has created this page in order to raise money for Todd's son, Nicholas Rowley, who is a junior at SCAD, Savannah College of Art and Design. As you know, Todd passed away suddenly on January 25 and the family needs our help to support Nicholas in his pursuit of completing a bachelor's degree in film. Todd had been working very hard to pay for college each semester and was proud to not have loans for Nicholas or himself. Please consider a donation, any amount will help. Thank you so much.
Many St. Patrick glory-seekers ventured to the out and back asphalt of East Moriches, to chase stratus clouds and shamrock dreams. Sergei Avramenko of Southampton, and also Ukraine-bordered Belarus, 38, pounded pavement to win first of 159 runners in 16:24. Fleetfooted lass Lily Strebel, 15, and 4 th OVERALL, scrunched distaff dashers with her 6:04/miles in 18:50. Silver and gold winners were Trevor Hayes, 17 (17:03.6) and Ethan Goldman (17:44), plus Heather Wright, 49 & twenty minutes flat, and Sara Mikula, 15, 21:48. Masters gold, too, went to Heather Wright, right? a nice 20:00.77 [maybe 19:59.999]. Heather outkicked first male master Kevin Weldon’s decent effort in 21:08. Cool pastures and chic homes on the seaward side greeted galumphing runners, as we dodged potholes at Mile One, over good flattish scenic roads of emerald-green spring. East Moriches’ 50+ winner John O’Brien, 50, 22:21, and Manorville’s Debra Franchi, 58, 26:40, hammered the 50-59 age group. Senior 60+ kudos went to sizzling-sixties guys Chuck Otto, 67, 23:24 of Sayville, and Port Jeff’s Robert Haughn, 65, 25:03. East Moriches’ New York City marathoner Beth Ferriola, 68, scorched the 10-minute mile, in a nice 30:59. Three 71-yearolds? Joe Sferrazza, 71, won M70-79 in 41:13, following Janet Gogel (71, 37:43) and Nancy McCaffrey (71, 40:18). Longtime semi-young Footnotes writer Maury Dean, 80, bountifully earned his huff-puffing age-group PR in 29:46.54, finishing 56 th overall, after 80% of the Awards Ceremony celebrants and fans left for greener shamrock pastures.
