GERMAN WATERWAYS

Sail through the Dutch provinces of Friesland and Groningen before enjoying a leisurely journey along the lesser-explored waterways of Germany, navigating canals and rivers that larger vessels can't.

Pretty Weser River

Day 1: UK to Amsterdam. Fly to Amsterdam where you'll embark MS Johannes Brahms. Enjoy a welcome drink and dinner on board tonight as you cruise across IJsselmeer to Lemmer. Day 2: Lemmer to Groningen. Sail along the Princess Margriet canal, through extensive polders (reclaimed land), to the lively university city of Groningen where you'll enjoy an included city walk before mooring here overnight. Day 3: Groningen to Oldenburg. Cruise along the Canal van Starkenborgh and the Eems Canal across the border to Herbrum, so you can disembark to join an optional excursion to the Meyer Werft shipyard. Sail to Oldenburg for the night.

Day 4: Oldenburg to Bremen. Sail to Bremen, arriving this afternoon, and explore this Hanseatic city on an included tour. Attractions include St Peter's Cathedral whose history spans 1,200 years and the 15th-century UNESCO-listed town hall, both in the market square. Day 5: Bremen to Nienburg. Cruise to the picturesque city of Nienburg, on the banks of the River Weser. Arrive late this afternoon and moor overnight. The historic city has an array of half-timbered buildings, a pretty statue of the city symbol – the Little Nienburg Girl – and even an Asparagus Museum! Day 6: Nienburg to Hanover Today perhaps take an optional tour of the historic city of Minden. Later, MS Johannes Brahms negotiates the Schachtscleuse lock from the River Weser to the Midland Canal, continuing along Germany's longest artificial waterway to Hanover, where you moor overnight.

An included tour of medieval Magdeburg this morning will reveal the cathedral as well as some of its avant-garde architecture such as the 'Green Citadel.' Sail to Brandenburg and moor for the night. Day 9: Brandenburg to Potsdam Explore the pretty town of Brandenburg this morning, and discover medieval buildings and fine examples of German Gothic redbrick architecture.
