Stunning castles on the banks of the Rhine

Day 1: UK to Düsseldorf. Embark Spirit of the Rhine.

Day 2: Düsseldorf Spend a full day in Düsseldorf where an included guided tour explores the Old Town – a square kilometre full of churches, art and more than 250 pubs, bars, restaurants and cafes.

Day 3: Rüdesheim This afternoon, perhaps take an interactive map and embark on a self-guided tour of Rüdesheim. Alternatively, join an optional excursion to Siegfried’s Museum of Mechanical Music or opt for an optional wine tasting.

Day 4: Rüdesheim to Koblenz

Cruise through the UNESCO-listed Middle Rhine to Koblenz for an afternoon at leisure. Across the river sits the vast Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, which you can visit on an optional excursion.

Day 5: Koblenz to Bonn Arrive in Bonn at lunchtime and perhaps embark on an optional walking tour to see sights such as the Electoral Palace and the baroque City Hall. Entrance to Beethoven’s former home, now a museum, is included for cruises departing 2022. Day 6: Bonn to Arnhem. Enjoy an afternoon in Arnhem where an included tour treveals more about the battle that was fought here during World War II. Beginning at the ‘Bridge Too Far’, you’ll also visit the Airborne Museum and Airborne Cemetery. Day 7: Amsterdam This morning there is a choice of two included excursions: a walking tour with the opportunity to taste local delicacies along the way or a coach tour and canal cruise to see the Skinny Bridge, Montelbaanstoren tower and Jewish Quarter.

Day 8: UK to Amsterdam. Disembark Spirit of the Rhine after breakfast or continue your holiday with an optional two-night hotel stay in Amsterdam.

A Bridge Too Far

An included tour in Arnhem visits sites associated with Operation Market Garden which occured during World War II. Begin at the ‘Bridge Too Far’ where the 2nd Battalion, led by Lieutenant Colonel Frost, held out for four days in September 1944 against overwhelming odds. See a monument dedicated to those who participated in the mission and the church in Oosterbeek, where the Allies took refuge. At the Airborne Museum antitank guns and a Sherman tank stand exactly where they were left in battle.

Middle Rhine

Relax aboard Spirit of the Rhine as she cruises through the UNESCO-listed Middle Rhine from Rüdesheim to Koblenz. Glide through a valley cloaked in green forest and punctuated by the occasional fairytale castle and pass the fabled Lorelei Rock.

Siegfried's Museum of Mechanical Music

Siegfried Wendel’s collection of 350 self-playing instruments is a veritable treat for eyes and ears. The museum houses music boxes, barrel organs, hand-cranked carnival machines and early jukeboxes, all in full working order. Of particular interest is the ‘Puppet Orchestrion’, a cabinet containing puppet musicians (1888). Perhaps visit during an optional excursion.
