Uncover the highlights of three of Europe’s most picturesque rivers – the Rhine, Moselle and Main.

Reichsburg Castle looms over Cochem

Day 1: UK to Arnhem. Embark Spirit of the Rhine.

Day 2: Bonn Arrive in Bonn after lunch and discover the highlights of the city on an optional walking tour with a local guide. Day 3: Cochem Explore Cochem independently this morning, while an optional afternoon excursion visits the castle, followed by a wine tasting at a vineyard.

Day 4: Bernkastel Renaissance houses line the market square of Bernkastel-Kues, where you can explore independently. Alternatively, join an optional trip on the Bernkastel panorama train.

Day 5: Bernkastel to Trier Enjoy an included afternoon tour of Germany’s oldest city, Trier, founded in 16BC by Emperor Augustus. See the Roman city gateway, Porta Nigra, and the cathedral. Day 6: Trier to Traben-Trarbach Cruise through the morning to the twin villages of Traben-Trarbach and enjoy an included wine tasting at a vineyard this afternoon.

Day 7: Koblenz Meaning 'merging of the rivers', Koblenz' rich history is reflected in a wealth of monuments and historic buildings. An optional walking tour this afternoon encompasses Ehrenbreitstein Fortress.

Day 8: Frankfurt Spend the day in the city of Frankfurt, where you can walk from one side to the other in just 20 minutes! There are plenty of places of interest, from the cathedral to the timber-framed buildings of the city centre – Römerburg – as you'll discover on an included tour. You'll also visit the Goethe House and Museum. This afternoon an optional excursion focuses on Frankfurt’s favourite drink, apple wine.

Day 9: Aschafenburg Aschafenburg has earned the nickname ‘Bavarian Nice’, thanks to its sunny climate and lively cultural scene. An optional walking tour this morning passes the Rennaisance Schloss Johannisburg and the artisan quarter.

Day 10: Mainz Look forward to a morning in Mainz with its large Romanesque sandstone cathedral. See more of the city on an optional walking tour or head to Heidelburg to explore the city and ruins of its Renaissance castle on another optional excursion.

Day 11: Strasbourg Arrive in Strasbourg mid morning and explore the cobbled streets, half-timbered houses and Gothic cathedral on an included tour and canal cruise in the afternoon.

Day 12: Rüdesheim to Boppard A morning visit to the wine town of Rüdesheim provides the opportunity to visit Siegfried’s Museum of Mechanical Music on an optional excursion. Head to Boppard, a classic Rhineland wine town, where the waterfront is overlooked by wooded gorges and vineyards, arriving mid-afternoon. You may like to visit Rheinfels Castle and St Goar on an optional excursion.

Day 13: Boppard to Andernach Leave Boppard early morning and cruise during breakfast to spend the rest of the morning in Andernach, home to the world's tallest cold water geyser which you can see on an optional excursion.

Day 14: Amsterdam Arrive in Amsterdam late morning, and after lunch you can join an included walking tour tasting local delicacies including herring, cheese and croquettes along the way; or you can join an included sightseeing coach tour and canal cruise to see the Skinny Bridge, Montelbaanstoren tower and Jewish Quarter.

Day 15: Amsterdam to UK. Disembark Spirit of the Rhine after breakfast or continue your holiday with an optional two-night hotel stay in Amsterdam.

Exploring Frankfurt

Frankfurt is a lively, cultural centre with a dramatic skyline. You can view the highlights on an included tour or join an optional tour covering the most important facets of the locals’ beverage of choice, apple wine, including its history, its traditions, and its production. The tour concludes with a typical Frankfurt snack, taken at a traditional pub in Old Sachsenhausen.

Heidelberg and its Renaissance castle

The city of Heidelburg is home to Germany’s oldest university, founded in 1386. An optional tour explores the city’s cobbled streets and visits the Renaissance castle, whose turbulent history extends to 1225 when the counts palatine of the Rhine established their residence in Heidelberg. The tour also includes a ride on the funicular railway to the summit of Konigstuhl, also known as ‘the King’s seat’.

Andernach Geyser

Andernach is home to the world's tallest cold water geyser, which sends jets of water shooting upwards 60 metres. Perhaps join an optional boat trip to a nature reserve on the Namedyer Werth peninsula to witness the geyser and maybe taste the water for yourself. The Discovery Centre here documents the science behind this geological wonder, and what happens 4,000 metres below the earth’s surface to drive and power this natural fountain. to £450^ on selected 2022 departures
