Volodymyr Reva, a farmer living near the Russian border in Kharkiv region, has three large hangars where he stored wheat, corn, and sunflower seeds. Hangars riddled with shrapnel from missiles and shells are only part of the war damage suffered by the eastern Ukrainian entrepreneur.

„Öelge palun, millal see lõppeb? Millal lõppeb see, et meie lapsed peavad surema?“ küsisid õhurünnakus hukkunud 11-aastase Anastassija vanemad. Sõja algusest saadik on Venemaa pommi- ja raketirünnakutes hukkunud sadu Ukraina lapsi, neist noorimad vaid mõnekuused. 2022. aasta detsembri lõpuks oli sõjas ametlikel andmetel saanud surma vähemalt 429 last. Pildil maetav Anastassija hukkus, kui Harkivis asuvat eramaja tabas Vene vägede õhutõrjerakett S-300.
A DARK DAY
“Please tell me, when does it end? When will it end that our children have to die?” asked the parents of 11-year-old Anastasiya, who was killed in an air strike. Since the beginning of the war, hundreds of Ukrainian children have died in Russian bomb and missile attacks, the youngest of them only a few months old. By the end of December 2022, at least 429 children had died in the war, according to official figures. Anastasiya, pictured, was killed when a private house in Kharkiv was hit by a Russian S-300 antiaircraft missile.
PUNATANK JA SINIMUSTVALGE
Viimsisse Eesti sõjamuuseumisse teel olnud Narva punatankile lehvitati Padaorus sinimustvalget lippu. Valitsus otsustas 2022. aasta augusti keskel eemaldada Narvast ja selle ümbrusest kõik Nõukogude sõjamonumendid, sealhulgas T-34 tanki.

After a Soviet tank was removed from Narva, people waiting in Padaorg waved the blue-black-white national flag to the passing vehicle when it was transported to the Estonian War Museum in Viimsi. The government decided to remove all Soviet war monuments, including the T-34 tank, from Narva and its surroundings in mid-August 2022.

Põhimõtteliselt said meist ka ühe hetkega bomžid,“ ütles Natalja.

Fortunately, no one was killed when a rocket hit a nine-story building on Mayakovsky Street in Toretsk, Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. However, the shock wave of the explosion caused severe damage to the apartment building across the courtyard. A block of concrete weighing about a couple of hundred kilos flew from the neighbouring house into the kitchen window of the secondfloor apartment where 65-yearold Natalya and 64-year-old Oleksandr live. “We can’t even go to the toilet at home anymore. Basically, we became hobos in an instant,” said Natalya.

On Monday, May 9, 2022, at 3:30 p.m., two women headed to the Bronze Soldier monument in Tallinn with photos of people who were wearing the Saint George’s ribbons on their jacket. According to the women, they were commemorating their ancestors who died in the Second World War. In previous years, a similar event called the March of the Immortal Regiment has taken place to expresses the Kremlin’s ideology and spread its propaganda. The woman, who refused to obey the orders, was forced into a police van.

THE BURIAL SITE OF IZYUM
In Izyum, eastern Ukraine, Russian soldiers buried nearly 500 people into unmarked graves during five months of occupation. The civilians’ graves were discovered after Ukrainian troops liberated the town that is located in the southern part of Kharkiv Oblast. Some of the exhumed bodies showed signs of violence.

The company of Nikolai Ossipenko, the most influential businessman in Ida-Viru County, signed a 15 million euro maintenance contract with the city of Kohtla-Järve, but a few days later the National Criminal Police arrested Ossipenko and several members of the city government and council. Despite the shock, the day after the raid, people kept working in the Kohtla-Järve city hall as if nothing had happened. Mayor Toomas Nael looked the journalist in the eye and said that he had no clue that something might be amiss in the affairs of the municipality. A family fleeing the war in Ukraine has arrived in Tallinn. Work at the refugee reception centre is in full swing both day and night - people are registered, fed, given a food parcel, necessary hygiene items and clothes.

The elderly people in the town of Izyum in the Kharkiv region of eastern Ukraine survived five months of Russian occupation together. Some of the hospice residents are bedridden, but some of the elderlies are able to walk on their own. After the bombing began, the hospice was the only place for them to get help.

Her home is aglow with Christmas lights. There is an engineer in the household who has arranged the electrical matters expertly - her husband Urmas. The family has lived in the farmhouse for 13 years, and in that time Urmas has turned it into an energy-smart home.

Ljudmilla Sibul, a small business owner and pensioner living in an apartment building in Lasnamäe, Tallinn, cannot manage without a TV - she has one in every room. She watches the Russian-language news about the threat of war in Ukraine, smokes a cigarette and says that no one wants war after all. Warmed up dinner consisting of a pie and coffee is set on the table. Ljudmilla has lived in the same three-room apartment for 40 years. She once had a family of four, but her two sons moved out long ago and her husband is dead. Ljudmilla mainly saves electricity by simply not being at home during the day.

Priit Adler owns a manor-sized building complex in the forests of Lääne-Viru County and a Pure Water Theme Park called Metsamõisa (Forest Mansion), which is not connected to the electricity grid of national energy company Eesti Energia. All the electricity and heat is produced on site. During a snowstorm, Adler cleans the solar panels of snow. Every watt counts in Metsamõisa.

The household of Liidia and Jüri Luiga in the village of Nõmme has been without electricity for about a day. The Luigas’ home is under the power line, which the brigade is currently repairing. According to the couple, it’s difficult without electricity, everything is at a standstill, but they have nothing but praise for the brigade. After all, they must toil in the forest with thick snow like this - try to do it yourself, it’s very hard work. Liidia leans over a little to see what the men of the repair brigade are doing on the other side of the fence.

Three local men have been working here in central part of Saaremaa up to their waists in snow since 7 a.m. A brigade from Elektrilevi’s partner Enersense is repairing some of the hundreds of power cuts in Saaremaa. A HAIL OF BULLETS ON THE WAY TO THE PHARMACY
At the beginning of 2022, violent demonstrations erupted in Kazakhstan and were brutally suppressed by the security forces. Sholpan Begaidarova, a 30-year-old single mother of three, went to the central pharmacy in Almaty on the evening of January 6 to buy medicine for her feverish children. As she was passing through the neighbourhood where the rioting happened, she was hit by four bullets fired from a Kalashnikov rifle. Three weeks later she was back on her feet, although her wounds were still causing severe pain.

WHERE DID YOU COME FROM, LITTLE FLOWER?
When it comes to introduced species, Sosnowsky’s hogweed is the one that gets the most attention, but Sakhalin knotweed is much harder to get rid of. The rhizomes of the knotweed spread far and wide, penetrating deep into the soil and intertwining into a tangle that is extremely difficult to eradicate. The ‘curse’ of the Sakhalin creates tiny knolls on the ground, making it even more difficult to penetrate the thicket. The knotweed also destroys all other plants in its path. CHASING AFTER GRANDMA
The bright and sunny picture is not of a mother, as one might think at first glance, but of a young grandmother with her grandchild. Anna Frank gave birth to her first child at the age of 16 and had her first grandchild at the age of 38. There are strong bonds between the women and the generations of the family, and perhaps it is the brightness radiating from this that helps Anna cope with a difficult profession: she runs the Children’s House service that helps sexually abused children in Estonia.

Venemaalt pärit Leka Kašaba kavatses minna Kiievisse, et kohtuda viimaks tema südame võitnud Valerijaga. Esimest korda said nad lõpuks kokku aga hoopis Tallinnas – Valerija ja Leka pelgasid, et sõda jääb neid muidu lahutama. Pärast mõnda aega Eestis elamist olid noored armastajad sunnitud kolima laeva Isabelle pardale, kus nende koduks sai aknata kajut. Seal on kogu aeg pime ja kitsas, ent noored ei nurise.

The war brought lovers from St. Petersburg and Kyiv together in Tallinn. The young couple met on Tinder before the war started. Leka Kashaba, from Russia, was going to Kyiv to finally meet Valeriya, who had won his heart. The first time they finally got together was in Tallinn instead - Valeriya and Leka were afraid that the war would separate them otherwise. After living in Estonia for some time, the young lovers had to move on board of MS Isabelle, where they found a home in a windowless cabin. It’s dark and cramped, but the young couple doesn’t complain.

THE GREY FACE OF EUROPEAN GREEN CAPITAL
Tallinn will be the European Green Capital in 2023. However, a question haunts the residents of Tallinn: to which city should be the title of Green Capital given? Is it an award to a city that is already green, or to a city that is not yet very green but is keen to become one? Theoretically it should be an award for achievements in environmental protection. With these photos, however, we are showing the face of Tallinn, which has not been cleaned of its grey specks of dust by a mere rhetorical greenwash.
Public transport in Tallinn has been free of charge for residents for years, but this has not encouraged people to move from cars to buses. EU funding is being used to plan new tram lines and the city boasts one of the newest bus fleets in Europe, yet our capital has one of the highest motorisation rates among the cities in Europe. City leaders like to blame this on the municipalities bordering Tallinn, saying that their residents drive to work and clog up the streets.

Pärast mitut aastate jooksul luhta läinud ehitusplaani, kavandatakse nüüd mülka asemele 30-korruselist hotelli- ja büroohoonet.
For more than a decade, there has been a muddy ground in the centre of Tallinn, directly opposite the Viru Centre on the former site of the Academy of Arts. All those years it has been used as a car park. The city makes no demands on the owners of the property. After several years of failed plans, a 30-storey building housing a hotel and offices is now planned to replace the muddy site.

Not a single blade of grass on the Narva Road. Hundreds of metres without any greenery or shade of trees. An asphalt field spreads out in one of Tallinn’s busiest streets. This is causing urban heat islands to form.

Last year during the summer red bicycle lanes appeared suddenly on the streets of Tallinn. Even though the paint work cost 1.5 million euros, the lines deteriorated quickly due to poor quality. With the onset of winter, they created red snow and, as it melted, red dirt, dubbed by the press as a Tallinn-style bloodbath.

A grandfather and a grandson are harvesting barley from their farm field. Much is determined by the weather, and the foreman is God in heaven - if it rains, plans must be changed. Right now, however, it’s 32 degrees outside, but it is pleasantly cool in the combine’s cab. You can’t start working as soon as it gets light in the morning, you have to wait until the dew has dried. While working in the field, Arvo, the owner of Takkasaare farm, is often accompanied by his four-yearold grandson Ats-Aron.

At a time when most people didn’t even have a colour TV in their homes, the game of koroona (also known as novuss) was hugely popular. “We need to lift that back leg a bit,” instructs Hillar Elva, looking at the spirit level laid on top of the koroona table at his home. He’s one of the few people who still keeps the game alive at his home in Kadrina. The host Hillar Elva is paired up with Andrea Uustulnd, one of the top koroona players in Estonian and European champion in 2003. They play against the latter’s husband, another top player in Estonia, Mihkel Lepist, who is in the same team with his and Andrea’s son Marek Lepist.
