Vana vaene koerake Kamur kardab vett. Cover photo: Kiur Kaasik / Delfi Meedia

IN THE BACKYARD

The poor old dog Kamur is afraid of the water. Kamur has lived in the small Latvian town of Jēkabpils for over ten years, but he has never seen anything like this in his entire life. In January the water suddenly overflowed the banks, and now his house is in the middle of the river. There is no safe kennel anymore. Kamur doesn’t read the news; in fact, he can’t read at all. He prefers to run around outside and do other dog things in his free time. Therefore, he hasn’t read stories about how, due to climate change, there can be nasty weather, raining cats and dogs in the middle of winter in his hometown (which he wouldn’t mind at all, but he doesn’t like the consequences). Fortunately, poor Kamur has a kind owner, Sergei, who takes him to dry land several times a day, on a surfboard.

Fotol saavad liinid 6. detsembril puhtaks Raplamaal Palamulla külas.

ELECTRICIANS’ WORKDAY At the end of November, a strong blizzard and snowfall swept across Estonia, leaving thousands of homes in darkness. “The wires are breaking,” explained Andrei Voropajev, who has been working as an electrician in Rapla County for 20 years, to local journalists who shadowed him during the challenging days following the storm. Thick snow accumulated on power lines, and the lines had to be continuously cleared as much as possible. Throughout Estonia, more than 150 specialists worked in two shifts during those days, braving the cold and thick snow to make efforts to quickly eliminate storm-related disruptions. In the photo, the lines are being cleared on December 6th in Palamulla village, Rapla County.

STRIKE IS COMING On December 1st, Minister of Education Kristina Kallas and the chairman of the Estonian Educational Personnel Union Reemo Voltri, announced that the Ministry of Education has managed to find an additional 8 million euros for an increase in teachers’ salaries.

INVISIBLE SCHOOL On September 1st, an assembly was held at Metsküla Elementary School, which officially no longer exists. “We are like an invisible school,” said Metsküla school principal Pille Kaisel. “There is a building, there are children, there are teachers, but there is no school.” The Lääneranna municipal council decided in March of the previous year that the elementary school must close its doors from autumn. Despite this, students, along with their families, gathered for a ceremony on Knowledge Day, and three first-grade students received their primers. The officially closed school continues with the support of the community and donors and is in legal dispute with the municipality.

SAVISAARE ÄRASAATMINE

FAREWELL TO SAVISAAR

5. jaanuaril saadeti viimsele teekonnale taasiseseisvunud Eesti üks vastuolulisemaid poliitikuid, peaminister ja pikaaegne Tallinna linnapea Edgar Savisaar. Vene mõjuagendiks nimetatud, erinevate skandaalide ja suure kohtuprotsessiga maadelnud poliitikule korraldati riiklik matus.

On January 5th, one of the most controversial politicians in independent Estonia, Prime Minister, and long-time Mayor of Tallinn, Edgar Savisaar, was sent on his final journey. A state funeral was organized for the politician who had been referred to as an agent of Russian influence and had struggled with various scandals and a major legal process.

72aastaselt on siiski liiga vara lahkuda, ütles pärast endise abikaasa lahkumist Vilja Toomast. Fotol on ta sarga kõrval Edgar Savisaarega hüvasti jätmas. At the age of seventy-two, it’s still too early to depart from this life, said Vilja Toomast after bidding farewell to her ex-husband. Valimisööl juhtus nii mõndagi. Fotol on elu veel ilus: saabunud on paberhääletuse tulemused ja EKRE juhib Reformierakonna ees kümne kohaga riigikogus. Meeleolu EKRE leeris oli hea, nad näisid seilavat edu kursil. Kuniks kella 23 ajal tulid korraga kõik e-hääletuse tulemused, mis kinnitasid hoopis peaministripartei suurt võitu. EKRE peol Hiltoni hotellis võttis seejärel maad matusemeeleolu. Hakkasid lendama ähvardused, et nüüd alles läheb sõjaks.

Until, at 11 PM, all the e-voting results came in, confirming a significant victory for the party of the prime minister instead. POLIITILINE ÜLEKUULAMINE 23. augustil 2023 puhkes idavedude skandaal. Rahvusringhääling kirjutas, et peaminister Kaja Kallase abikaasale Arvo Hallikule osaliselt kuuluv transpordiettevõte Stark Logistics on hoolimata 2022. aasta Venemaa sissetungist Ukrainasse jätkanud äri Venemaal. Just see andis aluse kutsuda peaminister Kaja Kallas riigikogu korruptsioonivastasesse erikomisjoni aru andma.

POLITICAL INTERROGATION On August 23, 2023, the Eastern Transport Scandal erupted. Estonian Public Broadcasting reported that Stark Logistics, a transport company partially owned by Prime Minister Kaja Kallas’s husband, Arvo Hallik, had continued business operations in Russia despite the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Meanwhile, Kallas’s government had issued guidelines in December 2022 stating that Estonian stateowned enterprises should not conduct any business with Russia. The media also reported that Kallas had provided a loan of 350,000 euros to her husband’s company, through which Arvo Hallik had a stake in Stark Logistics. This became the basis for summoning Prime Minister Kaja Kallas to report to the parliament’s special anti-corruption committee.

AKADEEMILINE PIDUPÄEV

ACADEMIC CELEBRATION

Traditsioonilised volbriöö pidustused saavad Tartus alguse akadeemiliste organisatsioonide rongkäiguga, mis viib laulda möirgava seltskonna Vanemuise juurest lippude lehvides raekojani ja sealt edasi Tartu Ülikooli peahoone ette. Enne hommikuni kestvat õllehõngulist möllu tehakse veel kohustuslik peapesu pronksist Karl Ernst von Baerile. Alates südaööst on kõikide akadeemiliste organisatsioonide muidu suletud ruumid külalistele avatud.

The traditional Walpurgis Night celebrations in Tartu commence with a procession of academic organizations. The singing and roaring crowd, waving flags, makes its way from the Theatre Vanemuine to the town hall and then to the main building of the University of Tartu. Before the beerinfused revelry that lasts until morning, there is the mandatory head wash of the bronze statue of Karl Ernst von Baer. From midnight onwards, the otherwise closed rooms of all academic organizations are open to guests.

TRAMMITEE PÄRNADE UUS KODU Vanasadama trammiteele ette jäänud kuus pärna said aprilli lõpus uue kodu Löwenruh’ pargis. Puude suuruse tõttu tuli nad asetada veoauto platvormile kaldu, nii veeti puid läbi linna ööpimeduses.

THE NEW HOME OF THE TRAMWAY LINDENS Six linden trees that stood in the way of the Vanasadama tram track found a new home in Löwenruh Park at the end of April. Due to the size of the trees, they had to be placed on the platform of a truck at an angle. The trees were transported through the city in the darkness of the night.

POEKÜLASTUS

SHOPPING

Hyundai roolis istunud juht, kes üritas ootamatult ette keeranud sõidukiga kokkupõrget vältida, sõitis autoga vastu Tallinnas Roseni tänaval asuva Macta Beauty ilukaubamaja seina. Veebruarikuise liiklusõnnetuse tegi põnevaks asjaolu, et tekkinud segadust ilupoes kasutas ära poevaras, kes napsas kauplusest 671,50 euro eest tooteid.

The driver of Hyundai, who tried to avoid a collision with a suddenly turning vehicle, ended up driving the car into the wall of Macta Beauty cosmetics store on Roseni Street in Tallinn. The traffic accident in February became intriguing due to the fact that a shoplifter took advantage of the confusion in the beauty store and snatched products worth 671.50 euros.

COMPLETED DISTANCE “I didn’t have many expectations, I came to cover the distance,” said Andrus Veerpalu at the finish of the Tartu Marathon to reporters. The 52-year-old Olympic champion Andrus Veerpalu was still part of the leading group at Palu, 16 kilometers before the finish, trailing the winner Henri Roos by only six seconds. In the end, the gap with the winner increased to about 2 minutes and 16 seconds, and Veerpalu narrowly missed the place on the podium. However, the veteran representing SK Jõulu was clearly the best in the M50 age group.

LÄTI LÄBI PRESIDENDI PRILLIDE

LATVIA THROUGH THE PRESIDENT’S GLASSES

Fotol tutvub Karis kohalike militaartehnoloogia ettevõtete toodanguga.

“A useful trip,” said President Alar Karis, who, at the invitation of the Latvian president, rushed for three days from one meeting to another at the neighbouring country, with a business delegation in tow. According to Karis, Estonia often looks towards more distant countries, forgetting that it is essential to maintain relationships with neighbors as well. Thus, he visited Latvia to nurture ties, for example, at the Rail Baltic construction site, brewery, military base, and ice cream factory. In the photo, Karis explores the products of local military technology companies.

LADIES DIVING INTO A TRASH CAN AND LINING UP IN THE FOOD QUEUE WITH SLEEPING BAGS. FOOD HUNTING IS ON IN ESTONIA

In Estonia, over 84,000 tons of food are discarded every year. If this food waste were spread evenly on the ground as a one-meter-high layer, it could cover the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds one and a half times. At the same time, almost 50,000 people in our country live in absolute poverty – meaning they don’t always have food to put on the table. Some people have found an opportunity in this massive waste and have embarked on food hunting.

Korralikult riietatud vanaprouad nahkkäekottidega, oma kohalolekust suuremat saladust tegemata, ootavad, kuniks biojäätmete konteinerid täituvad apelsinide ja banaanidega. Siis on käes nende tähetund: prouad astuvad prügikastidele ligi ja valivad välja parima kauba. Daamid on hästi varustatud – puuviljade sorteerimiseks on neil käes kummikindad ja kaasas mitu kilekotti. Well-dressed elderly ladies with leather handbags, without making a bigger secret of their presence, wait until the bio-waste containers fill up with oranges and bananas. Then comes their moment of glory: the ladies approach the bins and select the best goods. They are well-equipped – they have rubber gloves for sorting fruits and several plastic bags with them. 38

Almost every evening, Airi Hark sits on a folding chair near Tallinn Central Market and waits. On some days, she reclines on a sun lounger. When it’s colder and windier, she brings a sleeping bag from Lasnamäe with her. She wears a coat, with another jacket underneath: Airi comes here whether it’s –5 or –15 degrees Celsius. Airi sits near the food cupboard where surplus food from stores is brought, food that would otherwise be discarded. Airi waits in line with others. “Why do I have to stand here in the cold and shuffle from foot to foot like others? You have to take the maximum from life,” says Airi Hark about her gear.

Kella kümneks õhtul on toidukapi juurde kogunenud juba paarkümmend inimest. Järjekorda võetakse nagu polikliinikus: “Kes on viimane?” Paljud käivad siin mitmendat kuud ning on omavahel tuttavaks saanud.

Airi wants salads and delicacies from the food cupboard, but especially cake. She is even called the Cake Lady. Today the luck was on her side and Airi became the owner of Tähesära Christmas cake.

By ten o’clock in the evening, about twenty people have gathered around the food cupboard. A queue is formed, similar to how it happens in a clinic: “Who is the last one?” Many have been coming here for several months and have become familiar with each other.

Toiduprügi kaubandusest ja tootmistest koos majapidamiste biojäätmetega on jõudnud biogaasijaama. Eile oli see söök, homme sõidavad sellega Tallinna bussid.

Lõunasöök abivajaja kodus. Kogu pildil olev toit oleks muidu ära visatud. Lunch at the home of a person in need. All the food in the picture would otherwise have been thrown away.

Food waste from commerce and manufacturers, along with household bio-waste, has reached the biogas plant. Yesterday it was food, tomorrow Tallinn public transport will run on it.

Igal aastal jõulude ajal kogub Toidupank abivajajatele koolidest ja lasteaedadest annetusi, mille pakivad neile kaasa lapsed koos vanematega. Sel aastal annetasid Sikupilli asumi lasteaiad 20 kasti toidukraami. Every year during the Christmas season, the Food Bank collects donations from schools and kindergartens for those in need, which are packed by children along with their parents. This year, Sikupilli district kindergartens donated 20 boxes of food. 39

VÕÕRAS TULI KÜLASSE. MAALASED VAATAVAD BETOONIGA TÕTT Betooni taga on mets. Rail Balticu tulemisest on kaua räägitud, juba 1990ndate algusest, pea sama kaua kui kiirest internetist. Viimane vist ei jõua kunagi igasse Eestimaa nurka, aga Rail Balticu jaoks vajalikke tükke on üle riigi vaikselt valmis saanud. Behind the concrete lies the forest. The arrival of Rail Baltic has been talked about for a long time, since the early 1990s, almost as long as high-speed internet. The latter may never reach every corner of Estonia, but pieces necessary for Rail Baltic have quietly been completed across the country.

Fotolugu eestlaste uutest betoonist naabritest.

STRANGER CAME TO THE VILLAGE

Saustinõmme ökodukt kogu oma hiilguses. Rail Balticu trassile rajatakse üle kolmekümne ökodukti, lisaks sadakond muud loomade läbipääsu. The Saustinõmme ecoduct in all its glory. Over thirty ecoducts are being constructed along the Rail Baltic route, in addition to around a hundred other wildlife crossings.

One fine day, machines began rumbling behind the village in the midst of thick woods. More and more frequently, they spun up dust on the roads, creating infernal noise. Such commotion had never been seen around here before. Previously, it had been an incredibly quiet place, with only an occasional passing car. The distant hum of the highway could be heard, but when the wind blew in the right direction, it was truly a heavenly, serene area. And then suddenly, they kept hauling and hauling, long days passing, and a mountain grew wider and higher, visible over the trees from afar, no matter which way you looked. The villagers joked whether a ski slope or some sort of a bomb shelter was being built. Railway construction had been discussed in the news and on the radio, but that it would come right here – and on such a large scale – no one would have thought. Now, ecoducts and road overpasses sprouted like mushrooms after the rain. In Urge, Saustinõmme, Loone village, and many other places. Massive amounts of gravel, sand, and concrete were transported there. Photo story of Estonians’ new concrete neighbours.

Raplamaal asuva Põlma küla elaniku Annelii aia taga pesitseb uus naaber – Põlma viadukt. Behind the garden of Annelii, a resident of Põlma village in Rapla County, a new neighbor is settling in – the Põlma road overpass. 41

VENE SÕJAVANGIDE LAAGER LÄÄNE-UKRAINAS 3. jaanuar 2023, vangla Lääne-Ukrainas. Vene poolel võidelnud Sergei on pärit Ida-Ukrainast, kuid elas juba aastaid Venemaal.

CAMP OF RUSSIAN PRISONERS OF WAR IN THE WESTERN UKRAINE January 3, 2023, prison in Western Ukraine. Sergei, who fought on the Russian side, is originally from Eastern Ukraine but had been living in Russia for several years. According to him, on February 24, 2022, he knew nothing about Russia starting a war in Ukraine. He had an argument with his wife, a neighbor called the police, who took him to the military enlistment office instead of the local police station. This led to his journey to the front line. Sergei, who had already spent 18 years in prison earlier, says that although there are Russians whom Ukrainians deeply resent, Russian prisoners of war are treated humanely. “It could have been much, much worse,” he notes. After the interviews with the prisoners of war are concluded and they are taken away, the head of the prison camp’s office, Ljubomõr, explains: “They all say they didn’t kill anyone. There was one who even claimed he didn’t hold a weapon. And then we have video footage from surveillance cameras showing him walking the streets of Irpin, firing indiscriminately in every direction.”

HINGEMATTEV MISSIOON

SUFFOCATING MISSION

28. september.

The goal is to identify individuals so that their families can properly bury their loved ones. These pictures were taken in the village of Avdiivka on the border of Donetsk and Kharkiv after the final search of the day. All the bodies collected throughout the day are attempted to be identified and assembled. ESIMESED JA VIIMASED SUUDLUSED VAKSALIS Donetski oblasti ajutise pealinna Kramatorski raudteejaama perroon on Ida-Ukraina rindepiirkonnas koht, kus suudeldakse kõige rohkem. Kõige õnnelikumad on suudlused Kiievist saabuvate rongide ajal. Julmadest lahingutest väsinud sõduritele on need ühed vähesed õnnelikud hetked sõja ajal, kui rongist astub maha naine või pruut. Kramatorsk asub rindejoonest umbes 50 kilomeetri kaugusel.

FIRST AND LAST KISSES AT THE RAILWAY STATION The platform of the Kramatorsk railway station in the Donetsk Oblast is the place in the Eastern Ukrainian frontline region where the most kisses are exchanged. Always four times a day and always at specific times – when trains from Kyiv arrive or depart the city. The happiest kisses occur during the arrival of trains from Kyiv. For the soldiers tired of brutal battles, these are some of the few joyful moments during the war when a wife or a girlfriend steps off the train. Kramatorsk is located about 50 kilometers away from the frontline. 45

Bohorodõtšne külas purustatud kirik. Peakupli ülekullatud rist on pildistamise ajaks rusude vahel lebanud juba kümme kuud. The photo captures a demolished church in the village of Bohorodychne. At the time of the photo, the gilded cross of the main dome had been lying in the rubble for ten months.

Juri Ponurenko on üks viiest tagasi tulnud külaelanikust.

Vrakk seisab siiani seal, justkui koletu veretöö tunnistusena. A Russian army T-80 tank fired upon the village of Bohorodychne from the hill until Ukrainian forces destroyed it. The wreckage still stands there, as if a testimony to the monstrous carnage.

One of the seven remaining residents of Bohorodychne village, Yurii Ponurenko, shows how people use the remnants of a blown-up bridge to cross the river for bread. It was fortunate that the bridge collapsed in the explosion rather than was being scattered. Yurii Ponurenko is one of the five residents who returned. “Wouldn’t you have come back? If you had been born here and lived here your whole life?” he asked. “It was the best village in the world! What great fishing spots we had here!”

MAAILMA PARIM PURUSTATUD KÜLA

BEST DEMOLISHED VILLAGE IN THE WORLD

Bohorodõtšne küla on ukrainlaste visaduse näide. See on üks kümnetest IdaUkraina küladest, mis on sõjas maatasa tehtud. Ukrainat vallutama tulnud Vene väed tampisid 2022. aasta kevadel Bohorodõtšnet ja küla kaitsnud Ukraina üksusi poolteist kuud. Lasid otsesihtimisega eemalt suurtükkidest ja mäe otsast tankidest. Eri andmetel hukkus nendes rünnakutes 25–35 kohalikku. Enne sõda elas külas umbes 700 inimest. Vähemalt viis protsenti külaelanikest on seega sõjas hukkunud. Iga kahekümnes.

The village of Bohorodychne is an example of the Ukrainians’ resilience. It is one of the dozens of villages in Eastern Ukraine that have been razed to the ground in the war. Russian forces invading Ukraine destroyed Bohorodychne completely in the spring of 2022, with Ukrainian units defending the village for a month and a half. The attackers fired directly from a distance with artillery and tanks from the top of the hill. According to different data, 25–35 locals perished in these attacks. Before the war, about 700 people lived in the village. At least five percent of the villagers have been killed in the war. Every twentieth.

Nüüd on tänav jälle vaikne.

The last tsarist-era wooden house, located on a street called Põik near the heart of Tartu, is making way for an apartment building. Due to the shape of the plot, the old house was built in a parallelogram shape, which means there are few right angles in the building, but plenty of other angled corners. Long-time resident Elvi Nassar recalls that in the past, Põik was a quiet street, where the only disturbance to Sunday morning sleep might have been the loud conversations of devout Old Believers gathered under the windows. However, it was generally peaceful. Until all the traffic from Annelinn to the city center, including buses and trucks, was routed down this small street, causing the house to shake, and the building, constructed on peaty soil, began to sink. Now the street is quiet again.

VIRUMAA VARISEB. MAA VAJUB, MAJAD PRAGUNEVAD JA EHITADA EI KANNATA Pool sajandit vanad põlevkivikaevandused Ida-Virumaal varisevad: põldudele ja metsadesse tekivad üha suured varinguaugud, Jõhvi on hädas ehituskõlbliku maa leidmisega ning Kohtla-Järvel kortermajad pragunevad. Fotoreportaaž varisevast Ida-Virumaast.

Kohtla-Järve kortermajades näeb metallist pinguteid, mis peaksid seinu koos hoidma. Ühe sellise sisse asetas keegi korteriomanik oma 10–15 aastat tagasi ikooni. 33 MINUTES TO A NEW LIFE

Sissevaade ilumaailma intiimtsooni.

An insight into the intimate zone of the beauty world.

“The skin is the largest and most important organ of the human body, and you simply have to take care of it,” says the woman at the beauty salon located on Pikk Street. during a photorejuvenation procedure.“Of course, we’re getting old, already over forty. Until then, you can manage with your old looks if you’ve taken care of yourself, but from one point it won’t help you anymore. The morning after your birthday, you wake up and look: ‘Damn!’” recounts the woman, who is preparing for an evening jubilee visit. 56

Rinnaimplantaatide paigaldamine Kotka Erahaigla plastikakirurgia keskuses maksab vähemalt 4500 eurot.

Five minutes and done. Kaja, who visited the Faceline beauty salon for lip injections for the second time, says that if you are not satisfied with your reflection, you have to do something. Eyes wet, she endures the pain of the injection. Kaja has a stress ball in her hand and even though her lips were anesthetized, she fights the pain with tears in her eyes. The owner of the Faceline beauty salon and a specialist in cosmetic surgery injects filling into her lips, to which the the main ingredient is hyaluronic acid.

Installation of breast implants at the plastic surgery center of Kotka Private Hospital costs at least 4,500 euros. As a rule, women from the age of 40 do not want round silicones and ask for drop-shaped ones, which they think don’t seem so fake. The silicone is applied by brute force and the operation lasts 33 minutes on average. Women think about new breasts for 3-5 years before they go for implants.

It all began in November of 2022, somewhat like Oskar Luts’s “Spring,” because when I arrive with my camera at Viimsi Music School, the first rehearsal fof the brass band’s Song Celebration repertoire has already started. I have decided to follow his and his instrument-playing friends’ journey to the Song Celebration arch.

He travels nearly 150 kilometres to distribute flyers with the photos of himself and his promises to the settlements of Lääne-Viru County. Why does the pensioner spend money when the likelihood of getting into parliament as an independent candidate is virtually nonexistent? Paulus says he can manage well thanks to his ancestors. “So what, I’ll skip one holiday in the South!” Teho Paulus is running precisely because perhaps then some of his friends won’t vote for Conservative People’s Party of Estonia (EKRE). He considers his campaign successful if he gets over a hundred votes. After the elections, it turned out that Paulus got 30 votes. 69

ÖÖS ON ASJU

IN THE NIGHT, THERE ARE THINGS

Möödunud aastal riigikogus toimunu meenutab Mati Undi 1990. aastal ilmunud romaani “Öös on asju”.

Last year’s events in the Riigikogu resemble Mati Unt’s novel ‘Öös on asju’ published in 1990. The work talks about electricity, or rather tries to, because quite early on the author realizes that it is no longer possible to talk about electricity. Speaking becomes a substitute activity because some book needs to be finished. As a result, words lose more and more of their meaning and significance. In seeking any kind of meaning from this complex text, the reader is simply exhausted.

The same applies to the nights in Riigikogu. For example, a member stands in front of an empty hall and delivers a speech to three people, consisting of words whose value lies not so much in their meaning, but in their ability to prolong time. The listeners also engage in substitute activities - some sleep, some smoke outside. The journalist on the press balcony is also engaged in substitute activities, having fallen asleep.

And as Tiit Hennoste has written about the novel: ‘In the end, it doesn’t seem important anymore where all this leads, because the reader tires of searching for meaning, the story is too cumbersome to be enjoyed just for the sake of playing.’”

KÄRGPEREÄRI KÜÜNITAB LÕUNA-EESTI KUPLITE VAHELT IDAMAADESSE Kodase siidrikoja ja restorani asutajatel Tea ja Sulev Nõmmannil on elukogemusi USAst, Soomest ja Aafrikast, ent juba rohkem kui 15 aastat tagasi panid nad Lõuna-Eestis mulda õunapuud. Kasutades ära oma akadeemilist tausta, hakkas perekond valmistama nüüdseks auhinnatud siidreid. Linnakärast eemale Põlvamaale asutatud koht on sütitanud ka nende nelja last. Tegemist on pereäriga, ja õigupoolest kutsuvad Kodase eestvedajad end kärgpereks, mille liikmeks saavad ka töötajad. Kevadel läheb Kodase aias õitsele 10 000 õunapuud.

BEEHIVE FAMILY BUSINESS SOARS OUT TO THE EAST FROM THE HILLS OF SOUTHERN ESTONIA Tea and Sulev Nõmmann, founders of the Kodas Cidery and Restaurant, have life experiences from the USA, Finland, and Africa. However, over 15 years ago, they planted apple trees in Southern Estonia. Leveraging their academic background, the family started producing award-winning ciders. The establishment, located away from the hustle and bustle in Põlva County, has also ignited the passion of their four children. It’s a family business, and, in fact, the leaders of Kodas refer to themselves as a “kärgpere” (a beehive family), where employees are also considered members. In spring, 10,000 apple trees will bloom in Kodas’ orchard.

WITCH OF BAHMUT

32-year-old Olha worked as a lawyer in Kyiv, but when the war broke out, she immediately joined the army and participated in the defense of Bahmut. After demonstrating bravery in the battles there, she became the deputy commander of a mine mortar battery in the Ukrainian army, nicknamed Vidma (meaning Witch). “It’s always pleasant to fight against evil,” says Olha, who has found her calling and wants to go to the military academy after the war to become a higher-ranking officer. Her husband, two brothers and mother are also fighting in the war.

Sellel universaalsusel on omad head ja vead, suurepärane on end võrrelda muu maailmaga, kuid pingutus, mida oleks vaja näiteks maailma pressifoto võitmiseks, on hoomamatu. Või kas on? Kas keegi on Eestist üldse proovinud? Erki Nool võinuks

piirduda Eesti meistrivõistlustega, kuid läks olümpiale – esmalt täielikult ebaõnnestudes, kuid kolmandal katsel ta võitis. Ma kirjutasin juba kogumikus “Eesti pressifoto 2020“, et meie pressifotograafid teevad väga head tööd. 2023. aasta töid hinnates tõdesin jälle, et ma olen meedias tegutsenud üle 20 aasta, kuid ikka on fotosid, mis mind üllatavad. Näiteks Urmas Reinsalu siluett riigikogu saali ees – kuidas see oli tehtud? Ma polnud midagi sarnast kunagi varem Eestis näinud.

LET IT BE SEEN HOW AWESOME YOU ARE Why haven’t Estonian press photographers won awards in international press photography competitions? Who could answer? I am usually (and rather) asked how to evaluate the level of journalists writing in Estonia compared to the big and wide world. I have answered that the level is exceptionally high, because we operate under conditions of limited resources and in an exceptionally narrow language space, i.e. we will never have millions of readers and subscribers, because there are not so many people who can speak Estonian. It is difficult to compete with others, because the nuances of the language cannot always be accurately conveyed even with the best of intentions and translations.

2020” that our press photographers do a very good job. When evaluating the works of 2023, I realized again that I have been active in the media for over 20 years, but there are still photos that surprise me. For example, the silhouette of Urmas Reinsalu in front of the Riigikogu hall - how was it made? I had never seen anything like it in Estonia before. The experts explained and I got a little wiser and I’m sure I’ll remember this photo years from now. This year there were several “wow” works, which brings me back to the opening question. I have nothing to teach you, and this text is actually written with only one thought - to inspire. Go crazy, discover, try, experiment and by no means limit yourself to Estonia, you are fantastically talented. Feel free to show it to the rest of the world.

It is much more difficult to make such a comparison in press photography, the photo speaks in a universal language and you don’t need to know the local language to understand it. True, background knowledge of customs and events can be helpful, although I’ve always believed that a good photo can transcend all cultural spaces. You just look and understand. This universality has its pros and cons, it’s great to compare yourself to the rest of the world, but the effort it would take to win, say, a world press photo is unfathomable. Or is it? Has anyone from Estonia tried it at all? Erki Nool could have limited himself to the Estonian championships, but he went to the Olympics - failing completely at first, but he won on the third attempt. I already wrote in the compilation “Estonian press photo

See võimaldaks lugusid hinnata selles kontekstis, kuhu nad on loodud.

On väga hea näha arengut lugude autorite käekirjades. Videolugu annab võimaluse mängida ja katsetada. Nendes videolugudes pole televisiooni rangeid formaadi- ega ajapiiranguid. Eestis on palju huvitavaid ja inimlikke lugusid just tõmbekeskustest kaugemal.

THE STORYTELLERS WITH SENSITIVE NERVES WON The stories nominated in the best press video contest were united by the video image and the content of the story being well balanced. Three nominees stood out for the professional level of storytelling. The stories for which video is the best way to mediate content and to which a moving image provides added value came to the fore.

The principles of journalistic ethics and good practice must also be kept in mind for video stories. Although video allows it, the journalist should not be the center of the story, but the mediator. In this respect, the stories that made it to the nomination also stood out - the journalists played the role of storytellers with sensitive nerves.

The jury discussed about the integrity of the stories for a long time. A video story can be excellent, but it must also be supported by good storytelling and journalistic content. Among the videos presented, there were very different ones and they were of different levels. It was not difficult for the jury to make a decision, because the members were quite unanimous about the very strong stories.

The jury acknowledged that video stories could be submitted in different categories, such as news story, reportage, feature story and sports. This would allow stories to be evaluated in the context in which they were created.

It is very good to see the development in the handwriting of the authors of the stories. The video story provides an opportunity to play and experiment. These video stories don’t have the strict format or time constraints of television. But in order to fit into the attention span of viewers, you need strong editing and a sense of content. The story must carry and the length of time must be justified. We hope that in the future authors will be even more daring to experiment with different storytelling techniques and formats, because this will contribute to the development of video journalism. The jury was pleasantly surprised by the video production of county publications. There are many interesting and humane stories in Estonia just beyond the centers of attraction. They matter for local residents as well as for the audience all over Estonia. Directing more resources (from time to technology) to local publications would enrich the landscape of video journalism and benefit media organizations as well.

Editors-in-chief from all Estonian media organizations could submit more of their journalists’ stories to such competitions. The editorial office reaches its peak when the story is published, but its valuable journalists and videographers could also be recognized by submitting to professional competitions.
