MEELEAVALDUS NAVALNÕI TOETUSEKS 23. jaanuaril 2021 toimus Tallinnas Vabaduse väljakul ja Venemaa saatkonna ees meeleavaldus mõni päev varem Moskvas vahistatud opositsiooniliidri Aleksei Navalnõi toetuseks. Navalnõi väitel tunnistas riigi föderaalse julgeolekuteenistuse (FSB) keemiarelvade ekspert Konstantin Kudrjavtsev üles, et vastuluureamet üritas teda tappa, pannes Kremli kriitiku aluspükstesse närvimürki. Sellest inspireerituna otsustas üks Navalnõi toetaja tõmmata Tallinnas vardasse trussikupaari. Tänaval ilutses ka teine protesti sümboliks saanud ese – väidetavalt Venemaa presidendile Vladimir Putinile kuuluva palee 700-eurose hinnasildiga tualettpotihari.

DEMONSTRATION IN SUPPORT OF NAVALNY On January 23, 2021, a demonstration in support of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who had been arrested in Moscow a few days earlier, took place in Freedom Square and in front of the Russian Embassy in Tallinn. According to Navalny, Konstantin Kudryavtsev, an expert on chemical weapons at the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), admitted that the counter-intelligence agency tried to kill the Kremlin critic by putting nerve agent into his underpants. Inspired by this, one of Navalny’s supporters in Tallinn decided to pull a pair of undies on the flagpole. Another object that became a symbol of the protest was also seen on the street - a toilet brush costing 700 euros as in the palace allegedly belonging to the President of Russia Vladimir Putin.

Sotsiaaldemokraatliku Erakonna (SDE) fraktsioon kinkis uuele spiikrile Euroopa Liidu lipu. Teatavasti eemaldas eelmine parlamendi esimees Henn Põlluaas riigikogu Valgest saalist Euroopa Liidu lipud. Ratas lubas need esimesel võimalusel tagasi panna.

Jüri Ratas, who resigned as prime minister, found a new job. He was elected Speaker of the Parliament. Ratas himself has said in interviews that this is the job he likes best. The Social Democratic Party (SDE) presented the new speaker with a flag of the European Union. The previous Speaker of the Parliament, Henn Põlluaas, removed EU flags from the White Hall of the parliament building. Ratas promised to put them back as soon as possible.

Surm on Eestis muutunud tabuks, sest seda on hakatud kartma. Veel mõne aastakümne eest tegelesid lähedased kadunukesega ise: pesid, valvasid, riietasid. Nüüd tehakse kõike seda matusebüroos. Surmast kardetakse rääkida põhjendamatu hirmuga: et kui see juba on kõneaineks, siis küllap surm ka tuleb. Ei ta tule.

Death has become a taboo in Estonia because people have become afraid of it. Until a few decades ago, relatives took care of the deceased themselves: washed, tended, and dressed the departed. Now it’s all done in a funeral parlour. People are afraid to talk about death for no good reason: as if death will come when it is the topic of conversation. It will not.

Kümme aastat oli Eestis surmade arv stabiilne, kuid kui järsku on paar tuhat surma tavapärasest rohkem, siis tuleb sellest rääkida. Suurenenud surmade arvu põhjus polnud ainult kuum suvi, koroonaviirus või patsiendid, kes piirangute tõttu ei saanud õigel ajal arstiabi. Surm on igal pool. Surm on elu osa, nagu öeldakse. Paljude jaoks tähendab surm hoopis igapäevast tööd ja praegusel ajal nad ei kurda tööpuuduse üle.

For ten years, the death rate in Estonia was stable, but when suddenly there are couple of thousand deaths more than usual, it must be talked about. The reason for the increase in deaths was not just the hot summer, the coronavirus or patients who did not receive timely medical care because of restrictions. Death is everywhere. Death is a part of life, as they say. For many, death is just a part of daily work, and nowadays they are not complaining about the lack of business.

Raul Heinver istub Lihulas oma Moskvitšis ja meenutab igasuviseid Euroopa ringreise, mida nad abikaasa Üllega selles autos koos ette võtsid. Kõik muutus aga aasta eest, kui Mikk Tarraste võttis Üllelt külmavereliselt elu. Sellest päevast peale pole auto garaažist enam lahkunud.

Raul Heinver sits in his Moskvitch in Lihula and reminisces about the European trips he and his wife Ülle took together in this car every summer. But everything changed a year ago, when Mikk Tarraste cold-bloodedly took Ülle’s life. Since that day, the car has not left the garage.

Veelgi suuremast tragöödiast oli puudu vaid millimeeter – autot juhtinud Rauli pead tabas kolm kuuli, kuid imekombel suutis ta sõita autoga ohutusse kaugusesse, kuhu Tarraste käsirelva kuulid enam ei ulatunud. Tabamusi said Raul, Ülle ja nende kaks lapselast. Imekombel jäid lapsed ja Raul ellu. Ülle ja Tarrastet takistada üritanud Virgot Rägastik paraku mitte.

An even greater tragedy was only a millimetre away. Raul, who was driving the car, was shot in the head three times, but miraculously managed to drive the car to a safe distance where the bullets from Tarraste’s handgun could not reach. Raul, Ülle and two of their grandchildren were hit. Miraculously, the children and Raul survived. Ülle and Virgot Rägastik, who tried to stop Tarraste, did not.

ESTONIAN SCHOOL IN AFGHANISTAN

Kümme aastat Eesti mittetulundusühenduse Mondo toel tegutsenud kool asub Jalālābādi äärelinnas, oliiviõlitehase läheduses. Koolimaja seisab savist elumajadest ümbritsetud põllu keskel. Selle kooli lapsed elavad põllu ääres, koolist paarisaja meetri kaugusel. Septembris käisid koolis Talibani võitlejad ja küsisid, mida seal õpetatakse, vaatasid veidi ringi ja läksid siis ära – midagi muud augustis Afganistanis võimu haaranud islamistliku liikumise esindajad ei öelnud. Pärast seda vahejuhtumit õpetatakse koolis lapsi edasi nagu varem.

The school, which has been operating for ten years with the support of the Estonian non-profit organisation Mondo, is located in the suburbs of Jalalabad, near an olive oil factory. The school building stands in the middle of a field surrounded by clay dwellings. The students at this school live on the edge of the field, a few hundred metres from the school. In September, Taliban fighters visited the school and asked what was being taught there, looked around a bit and then left - nothing else was said by the representatives of the Islamist movement that seized power in Afghanistan in August. The people of Kiviõli have heard about the green transition, but do not know how it may affect their lives. When asked if they have seen any ministers or officials from the capital at the mine or the factory site, many of them first chuckle and then start laughing. Siis ma veel ei tea, et see on Aado Tõevere – Miila küla sepp, mesinik ja hinnatud jahimees. Minu ja paljude teiste jaoks on ta osa statistikast – järjekordne number, uus nakatunu, veel üks patsient, järgmine surnu. 82-aastasena lahkub meie seast igati tegus ja vitaalne mees, kellest jääb maha vaikus.

I enter the intensive care unit of the coronavirus department of Rakvere Hospital. There, lying unconscious in a tangle of wires, hoses, and machinery, is a frail elderly man. At the time, I didn’t know yet it was Aado Tõevere - a blacksmith, beekeeper, and respected hunter from the village of Miila. For me and many others, he is part of the statistics - another number, another infected person, another patient, another dead. At the age of 82, a very active and vital man has left, leaving behind only silence.

Armastus jahipidamise vastu tekkis Aados juba varasest noorusest. Ka jahitrofeede kogumine oli tema kirg. Love for hunting developed in Aado from an early age. Collecting hunting trophies was also his passion.

Nii et maja peaaegu 90-aastases ajaloos on Kask selles ateljees alles kolmas asunik. Artist Jüri Kask has been working in this studio of the Art Hall since 1991. So, in the almost 90-year-long history of the building, Kask is only the third occupant of the studio.

Maria-Kristiina’s daughter, Ruudu Ulas, who is now also an artist, spent a lot of time with her grandparents there as well.

The church of the Dormition of the Mother of God, built in 1910, could accommodate 1200 worshippers, but the access is limited due to the pandemic.

A FADING CONVENT

Ascetic lifestyle, meagre food, obedience, more than eight-hour-long workdays, hard physical labour, milking cows, praying and a thorough cleaning before the holidays are just some aspects of the life of the 101 nuns at the 130-year-old Pühtitsa Convent. The number of nuns is dwindling, and the convent gets smaller and smaller. Nearly three quarters of the sisters are of retirement age, which means that the hard work has to be done by the younger ones. 70

Pühtitsa Jumalaema Uinumise Stauropegiaalne Naisklooster on kui omaette riigikene, kõik tarvilik püütakse valmistada kohapeal. Elu kloostri müüride vahel kulgeb omasoodu, kuid ei ole jäänud koroonaviiruse pandeemiast puutumata. Klooster kaotas viis nunna ja ühe vaimuliku. The Stauropegial Convent of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Pühtitsa is like a state in its own right, where every effort is made to prepare everything residents might need on site. Life within the convent walls runs at its own pace but is still affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The convent lost five nuns and a clergy to the virus.

Nunn Tihona tutvustab Pühtitsa kloostri seitset iguumenjat. Praegune iguumenja Filareta on pärit Venemaalt Samarast ja elanud nunnaelu alates 1992. aastast. Nun Tihona talks about the seven igumenis of Pühtitsa Convent. The current igumeni, Filareta, comes from Samara in Russia and has been a nun since 1992.

Kuremäel asuv klooster on peaaegu täielikult isetoimiv. Nunnade toiduvajaduse katmiseks on 27-pealises karjas praegu viis piimalehma ja mitu vasikat.

Nunn Jevgenija valmistub paari päeva pärast tähistatavateks lihavõteteks, seades pashavorme töökorda. Marliga vooderdatud puuvormi pannakse kohupiima ja muud pashasse sobivat, et kohupiimavorm saaks täiuslik. Vormi siseküljele on graveeritud tähed „ХВ“ – „Христос воскресe!“ ehk „Kristus on üles tõusnud!“.

The convent in Kuremäe is almost entirely self-sustaining. To meet the food needs of the nuns there are currently five dairy cows and several calves in the herd containing altogether 27 cattle.

In a few days’ time Easter is celebrated and nun Evgeniya is preparing the paskha moulds. A wooden mould, lined with muslin, is filled with curd cheese and other ingredients of paskha to make a perfect pudding. On the inside of the mould are engraved the letters “ХВ” - “Христос воскресe!” meaning “Christ is risen!”. 71

HOLY BATHING According to the Gregorian calendar, Russian Orthodox Christians celebrate the Baptism of Jesus Christ on January 19, marking the day on which John the Baptist baptised the 30-year-old Jesus in Jordan River. On this day, Orthodox believers have the custom of going to the water’s edge and dipping themselves three times in the water, each time making the sign of the cross and saying, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit!”. Orthodox believers think that this cleanses both the body and the soul. A hole was carved in the ice of Lake Harku so that believers braving sub-zero temperatures could be immersed in the water. 75

Karusloomadega tegelevate farmerite südame paneb lisaks koroonaviirusest tekkinud müügipausile värisema riigikogus arutatav seaduseelnõu, millega soovitakse Eestis keelustada karusloomafarmid. Farmerid ühel pool ja loomakaitsjad teisel pool hoiavad hinge kinni, oodates, millal seaduse vastuvõtmiseni jõutakse, kuid samal ajal vajub karusloomakasvatus Eestis järjest sügavamale varjusurma. Mõni kuu hiljem kiitis riigikogu heaks seaduse, millega keelustatakse Eestis loomade aretamine ja pidamine üksnes või peamiselt karusnaha saamise eesmärgil aastaks 2025. Loomakaitsjad nimetasid otsust ajalooliseks võiduks. Fotolugu on pikaajaline projekt ja ajas jätkuv.

Fur farmers are not only shaken by the fall in sales caused by the coronavirus, but also by a draft law debated in the parliament aiming to ban fur farms in Estonia. Farmers on one side and animal rights activists on the other side are both holding their breath and waiting for the law to be passed, but at the same time fur farming in Estonia is sinking deeper into lethargy. A few months later, the parliament approved a law banning the breeding and keeping of animals solely or mainly for the purpose of producing fur by 2025 in Estonia. Animal rights activists hailed the decision as a historic victory. The photo story is a long-term project and will continue over time.

The portrait series “Women in the kitchen” is a playful photo project, the idea of which was born from the simple and outdated stereotype that a woman’s place is in the kitchen. But that’s not the case. Postitantsutreener Liuba. Jah, postitants on ajaloos olnudki pigem naiste kui meeste ala. Kui aga keegi arvab, et mis see posti ümber keerlemine siis ka ära ei ole, eksib ta rängalt, sest postitants on füüsiliselt väga keeruline, ühendades endas nii tantsu kui ka akrobaatika elemente. Postitants sai alguse 1920. aastatel Ameerika Ühendriikides, kui seal võttis võimust majandussurutis. Toona hakati inimeste lõbustamiseks tantsima laatade telkides nende postide ümber, mis telke üleval hoidsid. Pole dance instructor Liuba. Yes, pole dancing has historically been practised more by women than men. However, if someone thinks that twisting around a pole is nothing particularly difficult, they are very much mistaken, because pole dancing is physically very complex, combining elements of both dance and acrobatics. Pole dancing originated in the United States in the 1920s, when the Great Depression took hold. At that time, people started dancing in the tents of the fairs around the poles that held the tents to entertain people.

„Keegi teine ei suudaks mind mõjutada taolist esmapilgul hullu otsust tegema,“ tõdeb melomaan Risto Kukk, kes soetas teise pensionisamba raha eest festivalidekski kõlblikud kõlarid, laserid, tossumasina ja bassikõlarid. Tänu pensirahale sai ta koju teha köögidiskoteegi, aga ühtlasi vähendab ost edaspidi ka Risto kulusid. Nimelt korraldab ta juba üle kümne aasta muusikaüritusi ning iga kord selleks helitehnika rentimine ja kohaletoimetamine on taoliste väikese eelarvega ja entusiasmist korraldatavate ettevõtmiste puhul üks suuremaid väljaminekuid. “No one else could influence me to make such a seemingly crazy decision,” admits Risto Kukk, a melomaniac who used his second pension pillar to buy festival-quality loudspeakers, lasers, a smoke machine, and subwoofers. Thanks to the pension money, he was able to build a discotheque in his kitchen, but the purchase will also reduce Risto’s costs in the future. He’s been organising music events for over a decade and renting sound equipment and transporting it is one of the biggest expenses for such events, which are organised on a small budget and out of enthusiasm.

Septembris, kui oli tunda majandusmulli paisumist, kandis pensionikeskus teisest pensionisambast lahkujate kontodele kokku miljard eurot. Selle eest maksid inimesed tagasi tarbimislaene, ostsid kodumasinaid. Arvamusuuringud näitasid, et inimesed huvituvad hullupööra investeerimisest ning niigi paisuv Tallinna börs lendaski lakke. Fotolugu teisest pensionisambast raha välja võtnud inimestest.

In September, when the economic bubble was expanding further, the Pension Centre transferred a total of one billion euros to the accounts of those leaving the second pillar of the funded pension. People used it to pay back consumer loans and buy household appliances. Polls showed that people were very keen to invest, and the Tallinn Stock Exchange, already booming, hit the roof. A photo story about people who decided to take the money out from the second pillar of the funded pension.

Noor ema tahtis meelerahupuhvrit. Aleksandra Tolmats on kolmeaastasele tütrele ema, ta on töötukassas arvele võetud ning otsib aktiivselt tööd. Pensionisambast välja võetud raha eest, mida on kahe-kolme tuhande euro ringis, ta esialgu midagi konkreetset soetada ei plaani. Sellest sai meelerahufond, mis seisab pangakontol igaks juhuks. A young mother wanted a buffer for peace of mind. Aleksandra Tolmats is mother to a three-year-old daughter, she is registered with the Unemployment Insurance Fund and actively looking for work. With the money she has withdrawn from her second pension pillar, which amounts to about two or three thousand euros, she plans to do nothing for the time being. It has become a fund for peace of mind, deposited in a bank account just in case.

LUMEJALGPALL Märtsi alguseks Paide kunstmurustaadionile kavandatud Paide Linnameeskonna U21koosseisu debüüt Levadia noorte vastu toimus tavapäratutes oludes: väljas olid miinuskraadid ja korralik lumetorm. Meeskonna peatreener Erki Kesküla nentis, et mängu tulemuses oli oluline roll oskusel püsti püsida ning teisel poolajal meenutas matš pigem müramist. Poiste vanemad soovisid küll mängu katkestada viidates võimalikele vigastustele, kuid kohtumine peeti siiski lõpuni. Tulemuseks oli paidelaste 2:1 kaotus.

SNOW FOOTBALL The debut of U21 team of football club Paide Linnameeskond against the youth team of Levadia, scheduled for the beginning of March at Paide’s artificial turf stadium, took place in unusual conditions: sub-zero temperatures and a heavy snowstorm. Head coach Erki Kesküla said that simply staying upright played an important role in the outcome of the game, and that the second half was more like a frolic. The boys’ parents wanted to stop the game, citing possible injuries, but the match was still played to the end. The result was a 2-1 defeat for the Paide team.

Neil on sõnum. 2021. aasta parimat pressifotot valisime 668 pildi seast. Need fotod rääkisid lugusid olulistest sündmustest ja inimestest. Aasta oli kirev ja fotograafidel oli põnevaid võimalusi leida ajalukku minevaid tabamusi. Pildid meenutavad meile valitsuse loomist, vastasseise, meeleavaldusi, olulisi hetki presidendivalimiselt, autorallidelt, olümpia võidurõõmu, suvist melu pärast koroonatalve ja paljut muud. Aastale andis tooni endiselt pandeemia, mida näeme ka fotodelt. Piltnikud leidsid üles tühjad kaubanduskeskused, käisid vaktsineerimispunktides ja haiglates. Väga mõtlemapanevat fotot näeme uudisfoto kategooria nominentide seas, kus Tallinnas Vabaduse väljakul kantakse piirangutevastase meeleavalduse ajal kirikust välja kirstu. Aasta pressifotoks pärjati uudisefoto kategooria võitnud pilt Tallinnas Venemaa saatkonna juures toimunud meeleavalduselt vangistatud opositsiooniliidri Aleksei Navalnõi toetuseks. See foto jäädvustas sündmust, aga lisaks sellele oli piltnik tabanud meisterlikult detaile. Venemaa lipp tagaplaanil ja ees lehvivad aluspüksid, millesse ju väidetavalt närvimürk sokutati. Taustal tualettpotihari, mis viitab Navalnõi organisatsiooni uurimisest kõlama jäänud ja oma elu elama hakanud sümbolile – et Venemaa presidendi Vladimir Putini palees on kemmergu küürimiseks kuldsed harjad. Harja küljes lehvib tualettpaber, millelt vaatab vastu ei keegi muu kui Venemaa president ise. Ühe fotoga räägib piltnik terve loo. Selle tabamiseks peab olema silma.

Parim olemusfoto on sama kõnekas. Koos sammuvad ametist lahkuv president Kersti Kaljulaid ja Alar Karis, kellest on äsja saanud president. Pildil on tabatud vaid kingad ja hoogne samm tulevikku, see kõik on päevale sobivalt sinimustvalges. See on detail, mida iga vaataja ei pruukinud näha. Mitmed piltnikud jõudsid aasta jooksul piiri taha. Parim portree näitab Kabuli raamatukaupmeest ja tema poega, kes hoiavad hoolimata rasketest oludest poodi töös. Poja käes olev õlilamp on justkui sümbol sellest, kuidas nende võimuses on näidata pimeduses vaimuvalgust. Heas pressifotos võib olla nalja ja üllatavaid hetki. Spordifoto kategooria tihedas konkurentsis jäi lõpuks peale humoorikas seik, kuidas suusaorienteeruja on leidnud end ootamatult keset lumevaest metsa. Eesti pressifotograafide tase on tugev. Nad oskavad jutustada lugusid. Selleks, et teha häid pilte, mis tabavad sündmuse olulisust, peab teemasse süvenema, teadma tausta, mõistma selle tähtsust ja ühiskonnas toimuvat. Siis oskab fotograaf leida õige lähenemisnurga ja inimesed ning märgata detaile, mis teevad pildid nüansirikkaks. Konkursile saadetud fotod näitavad, et pressifotograafide silm on terav, neil on tundlik sotsiaalne närv ja üksjagu teravmeelsust. Otseloomulikult ei puudu huumor ja krutskid. On näha ja tunda naudingut tööst. Vähemalt sama palju, nagu kiirgab portree kategoorias nominentide sekka jõudnud pildilt, kus ukrainlasest munk naudib hetke koos kassiga, näol täielik õnn ja rahu. STORIES SET TO THE LAST DETAIL A good press photo opens the viewer’s eyes. It’s a shot that catches the attention. You can’t help looking. You search your memory; you notice the details. You may be surprised, saddened, or delighted. A good picture evokes emotions. A photo takes you to the scene of the event and lets you discover something unprecedented. Just as texts tell stories, so do pictures. They have a message. We selected the best press photo of 2021 from 668 images. These photos told stories about important events and people. It was a colourful year, and photographers had exciting opportunities to find historic moments. The images remind us of the formation of the government, confrontations, demonstrations, important moments from the presidential election, from rally competitions, the triumph at the Olympics, the summer fun after the winter trouble of coronavirus and much more. The year was still dominated by the pandemic, as we can see in the photos. Photographers went to the empty shopping malls, visited vaccination centres and hospitals. A very thought-provoking photo was among the nominees in the News Photo category, showing a coffin being carried out of a church during a demonstration against coronavirus restrictions in Tallinn’s Freedom Square. The winning photo in the News Photo category and the Press Photo of the Year was taken at a demonstration in support of imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny in Tallinn, near the Russian embassy. This photo captured the event, but in addition, the photographer masterfully captured the details. The Russian flag shows in the background, in the foreground flutter the underpants, where the nerve agent was allegedly inserted. And then there is a toilet brush, a reference to an investigation of the Navalny’s organisation and a symbol of its own right – a reminder that the palace of Russian President Vladimir Putin apparently has golden brushes for scrubbing the toilet. A loo roll hangs from the brush, with the picture of none other than the President of Russia himself on it. With one shot the photographer tells the whole story. You must have a great eye to catch such a photo.

The best Feature Photo is just as evocative. Outgoing President Kersti Kaljulaid and Alar Karis, who has just become the President, walk together. The picture captures only the shoes and the dashing step into the future, all in the blue-black-white of the day. It’s a detail not every viewer might have noticed. Several photographers went abroad last year. The best portrait shows a bookseller from Kabul and his son, who keep the shop running despite the difficult circumstances. The oil lamp in the son’s hand is like a symbol of their power to show the light in the spiritual darkness. A good press photo can contain glimpses of fun and surprise. In the end, in the tightly contested Sports Photo category, a humorous scene of a ski orienteering competitor who finds himself unexpectedly in the middle of a snowless forest stood out. The standard of Estonian press photographers is high. They know how to tell a story. To take good pictures that capture the significance of an event, you have to go deep into the subject, know the background, understand its importance and what is happening in society. Only then the photographer can find the right angle and the right people and notice the details that make the images nuanced. The photos submitted to the competition show that press photographers have a keen eye, a sensitive social nerve, and sharp mind. Of course, there is no shortage of humour and wit. Their enjoyment of the work radiates, and the viewer can both see and feel it. The same way as the enjoyment emanates from the shortlisted picture in the Portrait Photo category that depicts a Ukrainian monk enjoying a moment with his cat, a look of complete happiness and peace on his face.

PALJU TOREDAID INIMESI – KIRILL JA ALEKSANDR TÕID VÕIDU Pressivideo konkursi võidu pälvisid Sander Punamäe ja Andres Haabu portreteerides kaht uljast noormeest, kes üle kõige hindavad kiireid autosid, relvi ja sportlikke naisi. Koguni 14-minutine võidutöö on videomaailma mõistes väga pikk, aga selle sisse mahub tempokalt ja mänguliselt noormeeste minevik, olevik ja tulevikki. Loo tegemisse on autorid panustanud tulemuse vääriliselt: erinevad võttekohad, võtted mitme kaameraga, sotsiaalmeedia sisu kasutamine, vaatajat abistav ekraanigraafika, loo jutustamiseks valitud autoripositsioon. Tulemus on nauditav nii sisult kui ka vormilt. Sander Punamäe avab vene noorte mõttemaailma ja väärtushinnanguid, laskumata seejuures hinnangute andmise libedale teele. Sugugi mitte vähetähtis pole ka video lõpupuänt, mis oma ootamatuses keerab niigi tempokale loole veel ühe vindi peale. Kui võidutöö tõukub päevauudistest, siis tõelise uudisvideolooga said hakkama Holger Roonemaa ja Andres Putting Delfist, paljastades Venemaa konsuli salavaktsineerimise ja meditsiinitöötajate vassimise. Sellegi loo puhul on väga hästi kasutatud ekraanigraafikat, tähelepanu väärib ka varjatud kaamera pruukimine ning asjaolu, et lugu on valminud tõelises uudistempos, mis seab karmid tingimused planeerimisele ja tehnilisele toimetamisele. Kolmas nominent, Karel Reisenbuki ja Andres Haabu lugu Eesti viimasest surmamõistetust, mille jutustas kunagine prokurör, oli sisult kahtlemata kõige mõjusam. Loo jutustamisel kasutatakse nii monoloogi kui ka meisterlikku dialoogi prokuröri ja Karel Reisenbuki vahel. Konkursile esitatud töödest hakkas veel silma Levila tehniliselt ülimeisterlik lavastuslik lugu : „Kuidas ma vihkama hakkasin“. Paraku leidis žürii pärast arutelu, et tegemist on ajakirjandusega vaid väga tinglikult – pigem on see lavastatud dokumentaal- või isegi lühifilm. Ja seetõttu me ei saanud seda päriselt pressivideona hinnata. Eesti ajakirjanduse videograafe tahaks aga väga julgustada

selgitavate lühivideote tegemisel. Konkursile esitatud Delfi lugu, mis lõhkus müüdi magnetite ja vaktsiinisüsti seostest, tekitas palju elevust. Paraku oli videos nii sisu kui ka vormi mõttes lihvimist vajavaid elemente. Võrreldes varasemate aastatega on hakatud järjest enam loo jutustamisel kasutama ekraanigraafikat ja seda ka animeerima. Lisaelemendid peavad muidugi olema sisulised, aga õige graafika õiges kohas muudab loo jälgimise oluliselt nauditavamaks ja lihtsamaks. Olulise detailina jäi silma lugude alustamise ja lõpetamise problemaatika. Kui juba loo avasekund edastab olulist teksti, võib juhtuda, et sõnum läheb lihtsalt kaduma, nagu telefonikõne esimesed paar sekundit lähevad enamasti kaotsi. Peaaegu kõikide konkursile esitatud lugude puhul oli läbivaks trendiks vaataja ajaga väga pillavalt ringikäimine. Kümme minutit on juba äärmiselt pikk aeg, rääkimata veerand tunnist või veelgi enamast. Žürii vaatas kannatlikult kõik lood läbi, mõned mitugi korda, kuid tavalise inimese püüdmine niivõrd pikaks ajaks nõuab juba väga suurt meisterlikkust. Edaspidiseks soovitaks pressivideote tegijatel leida meeskonda veel kriitilise meelega toimetaja, kes kujuteldava lugeja-vaataja esindajana juhiks tähelepanu igale kohale, kus keskendumine hajuma hakkab või loo struktuuri mingi ebaloogilisus sisse lipsab.

LOTS OF NICE PEOPLE KIRILL AND ALEKSANDR BROUGHT THE VICTORY Sander Punamäe and Andres Haabu won the Press Video Competition by portraying two rakish young men who like fast cars, guns, and sporty women above all else. The winning piece, which lasted 14 minutes, is very long by the standards of press video, but it is a fast-paced and playful creation that captures the past, the present and even the future of these young men.

However, I would like to encourage in the Estonian press to make more short explanatory videos. The Delfi’s story submitted to the competition, which debunked the myth about the link between magnets and vaccine injections, caused a lot of excitement. Unfortunately, there were elements of the video that needed polishing, both in terms of content and form.

The authors have put a lot of effort into making the video and it pays off: different shooting locations, multi-camera shots, use of social media content, screen graphics to assist the viewer, and the author’s position chosen to tell the story. The result is enjoyable in both content and form. Sander Punamäe shows the mindset and values of Russian youth without taking the slippery slope of judgement. Also significant is the ending of the video, as it unexpectedly adds another twist to an already fast-paced story.

Compared to previous years, there has been an increasing use of screen graphics and animation in storytelling. Of course, the additional elements need to be meaningful, but having the right graphics in the right place makes the story much more enjoyable and easier to follow.

While the winning entry was inspired by the news of the day, Holger Roonemaa and Andres Putting from Delfi were the real news videographers, exposing the Russian consul’s secret vaccination and the lying behaviour of the medical staff. Again, the use of screen graphics is excellent, the use of hidden camera is worth noting also, as is the fact that the story has been produced under time pressure inherent to newsroom, which makes the planning and editing of the material so much more complicated. The third nominee, Karel Reisenbuk’s and Andres Haabu’s video about the last person sentenced to death in Estonia, told by a former prosecutor, was undoubtedly the most compelling. The story is told using both monologue and masterly dialogue between the prosecutor and Karel Reisenbuk. Among the entries, Levila’s technically masterful staged piece “How I Started to Hate” stood out. Unfortunately, after discussion, the jury found that it was not really a journalistic piece - rather more like a staged documentary or even a short movie. And therefore, we could not really judge it as a press video.

An important detail that stood out was the problem of starting and ending stories. If the opening scene of a video is already conveying important text, the message might simply get lost, just as the first few seconds of a phone call are often lost. The overarching trend in almost all the videos submitted to the competition was a very wasteful approach to the viewer’s time. Ten minutes is already an extremely long time, let alone a quarter of an hour or even more. The jury patiently watched all the videos, some even several times, but capturing the attention of an average person for such a long time requires a great deal of mastery. For the future, the authors of the press videos would be well advised to find a more critical-minded editor, who, as the imaginary representative of the readers and viewers, would point out the places where attention starts to wander, or some illogicality slips into the structure of the story.

2021. aasta jaanuari lõpul musta raudratsuga Tallinna vahel ringi paarutanud ja autoaknast stardipüstoliga laske sooritanud Kirill Orlõšev ütles, et tegemist oli lihtsalt naljaga, mis kukkus halvasti välja. Nüüdseks on ta saanud kätte päris relva ja pööranud elus uue lehekülje.

Kirill Orlyoshev, who was driving around Tallinn in a black car in early 2021 and firing a starter pistol from the car’s window, said it was just a joke that turned out badly. He has now got his hands on a real weapon and turned a new page in his life.

A prosecutor who was present at the last execution carried out in Estonia recalls: “He was pushed to the floor and then a great tussle started.” Feliks Saarevet, a former prosecutor who will soon celebrate his 88th birthday, is perhaps the only one who still knows and remembers how it all happened, as he was the one who read out the last two death sentences in the notorious Patarei execution chamber.
