VAADE, MIDA MEIL ENAM EI OLE

Merevaade Tallinna miljööväärtuslikus piirkonnas Pirital. Dokumenteerisin 14 kuu jooksul (juuli 2023 – september 2024), kuidas vaatamata kohalike elanike vastuseisule rajatakse promenaadi ja Pirita tee vahele luksuslikud korterelamud, varjates nõnda avara vaate merele. Kuni 2024. aasta jaanuarini sain pildistada täpselt samast punktist haljasalal, kus tegin esimesegi foto, kuid peatselt kerkisid tulevase ehitusplatsi ümber piirdetarad. Saabusid ekskavaatorid ja kraanad. Taganesin mõnikümmend meetrit, püüdes säilitada võimalikult sarnast rakurssi. Aasta jooksul laiendati ehitustsooni veelgi ja taganesin ka mina oma kaameraga. Mida aeg edasi, seda kaugemalt ma pildistada sain ja seda koledamaks vaade muutus. Septembriks 2024 kerkisid müürid 2–3-korruselisteks ja vaade merele kadus. “Esireas on alati loetud arv kohti,” reklaamib arendaja Liven sealseid merevaatega kortereid, millest suuremate hinnad küündivad üle miljoni euro.

A VIEW WE NO LONGER HAVE

Sea view in milieu-valued Pirita district in Tallinn. For 14 months (from July 2023 to September 2024), I documented how, despite the opposition of local residents, luxury apartment buildings are being constructed between the seaside promenade and Pirita Road, thus obscuring the sweeping sea view. Until January 2024, I was able to take photos from exactly the same spot in the green space where I captured the first photo, but soon the fences were erected around the future construction site. Excavators and cranes arrived. I stepped back a few dozen metres, to maintain as similar as possible angle. During the year, the construction zone was extended even more, and I retreated with my camera. As time went on, I was forced to take the pictures only farther and farther away and the view became only uglier. By September 2024, the walls had reached to 2–3 storeys high, and the view of the sea disappeared. “The number of seats in the front row is always limited,” advertises the developer Liven apartments with a sea view there. The prices of the larger ones reach over one million euros.

Ye Pan harjutab metsasarve üürimajas Tallinna kesklinnas Vana-Lõuna tänaval. “Olen proovinud korteris harjutada, aga alati pääseb heli naabrite juurde – võib-olla radiaatorite kaudu, ei tea. Lasin professionaalidel korteri helikindlust parandada, aga kuna korter ei saa olla lõpuni õhukindel, siis mingi osa helist ikkagi pääseb välja. Proovisin ka väikest stuudiokabiini. Arvan, et laulmiseks või kitarrimänguks see sobib, kuid metsasarve mängimiseks kindlasti mitte. Selles väikeses majas on mul palju mugavam ka veebi teel oma Hiina õpilasi õpetada ning lugusid salvestada. Seda kohta otsisin umbes pool aastat. Esialgu rentisin ühe kontoriruumi büroohoones, aga kohe, kui seal mängima hakkasin, öeldi ei-ei, seda kuulevad ju majas kõik inimesed!”

Ye Pan practices the French horn in a rented house in central Tallinn on Vana-Lõuna Street. “I’ve tried to practice in the apartment, but the sound always gets to the neighbours – maybe through the radiators, I don’t know. I let the professionals improve the soundproofing of the apartment, but since the apartment cannot be completely airtight, some of the sound still escapes. I also tried a small studio booth. I think it’s fine for singing or playing guitar, but definitely not for playing the French horn. In this small house, it is also much more convenient for me to teach my Chinese students online and record music. I searched for this place for about half a year. Initially, I rented an office space in an office building, but as soon as I started playing there, they said no-no, everyone in the building can hear it!”

ERSO SÜMFOONIKUTE LOOMERUUMID

Estonia või mõne teise kontserdimaja kaunilt valgustatud laval istuvad frakkides ja õhtukleitides muusikud ja mängivad meisterlikult oma instrumente. ERSO annab hooaja jooksul kümneid kontserte ja selleks hetkeks, kui muusikud kõik koos saali kogunevad – isegi proovi ajaks –, peab igaühel oma partii juba nüanssideni selge olema. Kuidas nad sellise vormi saavutavad, kui kõik orkestri rohkem kui sada liiget ei mahu Eesti Kontserdi prooviruumidesse harjutama? Käisin ühe kuu jooksul uurimas, kus muusikud oma pillist helisid välja võluvad.

CREATIVE SPACES OF ERSO SYMPHONISTS

Musicians in tailcoats and evening dresses sit and play their instruments masterfully on the beautifully lit stage of Estonia Concert Hall or any other arena. Estonian National Symphony Orchestra (ERSO) gives dozens of concerts during the season, and by the time the musicians all gather in the hall – even during rehearsals – everyone must already know their part down to the last nuance. How do they achieve such a readiness when there is no space for more than a hundred members of the orchestra to practice in the rehearsal rooms of the Eesti Kontsert? For a month, I was exploring where the musicians conjure up sounds from their instruments.

Mihkel Peäske harjutab flööti kodumaja kõrvalhoone pööningutoas Laagris. “Noorena sain meeldejäävad kogemused, kuidas muusikakeskkooli metsikult kajavas klassis harjutades ja pärast suurde tuhmi saali kontserti andma minnes oli helipildis tohutu vahe. Need ehmatused panid asja paika, et enne lavale minekut ei tohi mängida hea heliga ja kajavas ruumis. Naabritega pole tüli harjutamise pärast tekkinud, keegi pole kunagi midagi ütlema tulnud. Siin, eramajas, on naabrid vahel palunud, et kui harjutama hakkan, lükaku ma aken veidi rohkem avali, siis neil on mõnus kuulata. Selles ruumis harjutades teen vahel ka kangiga mõned jõuharjutused, see tekitab samasuguse tunde nagu lavanärv: pulss on kõrge ja natuke peab hingeldamist alla suruma.”

Mihkel Peäske practices the flute in the attic room of the outbuilding of his home in Laagri. “While young, I had some memorable experiences of how there was a huge difference in the soundscape when I was practicing in a wildly echoing classroom at a music high school and then went to give a concert in a large dull hall. These frights made clear that you should not play in a room with good acoustics and loud echoes before going on stage. There has been no quarrel with the neighbours about practicing, no one has ever said anything. Here, in a private house, the neighbours have sometimes asked me to open the window a little more when I start practicing, so it’s better for them to listen. When I practice in this room, I occasionally do some strength exercises with a barbell, which creates the same feeling as stage nerves: the heart rate is high and you have to suppress your panting a little bit.”

Mati Lukk harjutab kontrabassi kodus Kalamaja asumis Kopli tänaval. “ERSO prooviruumid on kasinad, laed on ikkagi väga madalad, mõnes saab vaid üksi mängida, mõnda mahub ikka mitmekesi. Need asuvad Estonia kontserdisaali garderoobide all ja on akendeta. On juhtunud sedagi, et harjutama minnes on olnud ilus päikesepaisteline ilm, kuid pärast proovi välja tulles üllatud, et lumi on maas. Kunagi mängisin Soomes Turu linnaorkestris, kus mul oli väga äge harjutamistuba. See käis mu majahoidjast naabrile närvidele. Proovisin küll mitte enne kella 11 harjutada, kuid ühel pühapäeval viis minutit pärast harjutamise alustamist tuli läbi ukse postiluugi paber, kuhu oli kirjutatud “mängimine lõpetada” – muud ei midagi. Praegu siin Kopli tänaval eestiaegses majas elades on harjutamiseks väga head tingimused. Mu 40. sünnipäeval mängis meie korteris bänd, kui aga järgmisel päeval ülemise naabri ees vabandama läksin, et nii valju muusikat tegime, oli naaber üllatunud: “Mis? Muusika mängis? Oleksite pidanud varem ütlema, ma oleks hoolega kuulanud.””

Mati Lukk practices double bass at home on Kopli Street in Kalamaja neigbourhood. “ERSO’s rehearsal spaces are sparse, the ceilings are really very low, some can only be used by one person, some can fit several. They are under the dressing rooms of the Estonia Concert Hall and have no windows. It has also happened that when you go to rehearsal, the weather is beautiful and sunny, but when you come out after the rehearsal, you are surprised to find snow on the ground. I used to play in the Turku City Orchestra in Finland, where I had a very cool rehearsal room. It got on the nerves of a neighbour who was a caretaker. I tried not to practice before 11 o’clock, but one Sunday, five minutes after I’d started rehearsing, a piece of paper came through the letter opening on the door with the words ‘stop playing’ written on it – nothing else. Now living in a first Estonian republic era building on Kopli Street, there are very good conditions for practicing. On my 40th birthday, a band played in our apartment, and when I went to apologise to the upstairs neighbour the next day for making so loud music, the neighbour was surprised: ‘What? The music played? You should have said earlier, I would have listened carefully.’”

5. veebruari hommikul käitus Hele-Mai koer Fritz igati tavapäraselt –jooksis kohe suunas, kus kuulis või nägi midagi võõrast. Veidi aega hiljem oli koer tagasi ja lamas, käppade vahel surnud imik. “Imikut kandis ta õrnalt ja tasa ning ei protesteerinud üldse, kui ma beebi ära võtsin,” meenutas Hele-Mai. Mis oli lapsega juhtunud, seda ei teadnud siis veel keegi.

THE MYSTERY OF THE DEAD INFANT IN SUURE-LÄHTRU

On the morning of 5 February, Hele-Mai’s dog Fritz behaved as usual – he immediately ran in the direction where he heard or saw something unfamiliar. A short while later, the dog was back and lying down, a dead infant between his paws. “He carried the infant gently and meekly and didn’t protest at all when I took the baby away,” recalled Hele-Mai. What had happened to the child, no one knew at the time.

22. jaanuaril alanud õpetajate streik tõi meeleavalduse ka riigikogu ette. Streigi teiseks nädalaks oli tänaval pedagooge vähemaks jäänud, aga kui üheskoos liiguti Toompea lossi juurest Stenbocki maja juurde, sai streigi eestvedaja ja haridustöötajate liidu juht Reemo Voltri tervitada peaminister Kaja Kallast.

The teachers’ strike that started on 22 January also included a demonstration in front of the Parliament. By the second week of the strike, the number of teachers on the streets had dwindled, but as they moved together from Toompea Castel to the Stenbock House, Reemo Voltri, the leader of the strike and the head of the Estonian Educational Personnel Union, had a chance to greet Prime Minister Kaja Kallas.

Pärnu Kesklinna silla kõrval parvlaeva Reet lähistel õngitsevad kalamehed justkui jääpankadel, kuid tegelikult on need vanad murdunud jäätükid, mis uuesti külmusid. Soojakraadid sulatasid Pärnu jõejäält lumekihi, mistõttu torkavad kontrastsed pangad eriti silma. Kalapüügientusiast Erkki Mäevälja sõnutsi on Pärnu jõe lapiteki-jääl paksust 20–30 sentimeetrit ning kala tuleb hästi: saab nii koha, ahvenat kui ka vimba.

FISHERMEN ON FROZEN DRIFT ICE

Next to the Pärnu Kesklinna bridge and near the ferry Reet, fishermen seem to angle as if perched on pieces of drift ice, but in fact they are broken pieces of old ice that has frozen again. The warm temperatures melted the layer of snow from the Pärnu River ice, making the contrasting ice junks look particularly striking. According to fishing enthusiast Erkki Mäevälja, the patchwork ice on the Pärnu River is 20–30 centimetres thick and the catch is good: there is zander, perch, and vimba bream.

The residential complex built right by the TV Tower in Tallinn fulfilled every criterion of success – a wealthy investor, a good location and a beautiful design. But instead, a bunch of debts and lawsuits followed, and the wealthy Russian investor vanished from Estonia. The building’s lights don’t work, the elevator doesn’t work, there’s a big puddle on the floor on the top level, and the walls of the apartments are moldy. ILUS HETK

Tallinlastest elukaaslased Enel Ratnik ja Richard Kirch suusatasid suures üksmeeles 50. Tartu maratoni lühemat ehk 31 kilomeetri pikkust distantsi ning jõudsid peaaegu viis tundi kestnud rassimise järel nagu kord ja kohus finišisse. Seal haaras Richard teadustajalt mikrofoni ja palus Eneli endale naiseks! Hämarduvas Tartumaa tervisespordikeskuses kõlas vastuseks kindel “jah”. Finišis oli kihlumise tunnistajaks ka Tartu maratoni peakorraldaja Indrek Kelk. Ta on olnud sündmuse korraldamise juures juba veerandsada aastat, aga ei suutnud meenutada ühtegi teist sellist kihlumist. Ühtlasi tunnistas ta, et ilus hetk võttis ka temal pisara silma.

A BEAUTIFUL MOMENT

Life partners Enel Ratnik and Richard Kirch from Tallinn took part in the 50th Tartu Ski Marathon on the shorter 31 kilometres long distance covering it in total unison and crossing the finish line after almost five hours of hard work. There, Richard grabbed the microphone from the announcer and asked Enel to marry him! In the dusk at Tartu County Recreational Sports Centre, the answer was a resounding “yes”. At the finish line, the engagement was witnessed by the chief organiser of the Tartu Marathon, Indrek Kelk. He has been involved in organising the event for a quarter of a century but could not recall any other such proposal. He also confessed that the beautiful moment brought a tear to his eye.

Pärnu muuseumi restauraator-konservaator Triin Tammann taastab hindamatu ajaloolise väärtusega esemeid. Tema oskused ulatuvad mööblist paberini, kuid tema erilist tähelepanu on pälvinud vanade dokumentide ja raamatute restaureerimine. Tammann taastab neid samm-sammult, kasutades spetsiifilisi töövõtteid, nagu paberile õrnade vedelikega mõju avaldamine, tupsutamine kustutuskummiga ja õrnade paigatööde tegemine Jaapani paberiga. Tema töö on aeglane, täpne ja nõuab kannatlikkust, kuid on tähtis ajaloo säilitamiseks tulevastele põlvedele.

Restauraatori töötoa seinal on hoiatus “Nii ei tohi teha!”. Selle pildi kohta käib lugu, mida Triin Tammann kuulis meediast. “”Aktuaalses kaameras” oli uudis, kus üks Hispaania memm nuttis, kui kohalik muinsuskaitse teda “ründas”, kuna naine oli kiriku seinal ühe ajaloolise fresko oma äranägemise järgi üle maalinud. Koguduse liikmena tahtis ta pildi paremaks teha. Naine halas ametnikele, et kunagi lapsena oskas ta joonistada. See oli nii meeldejääv, kuidas Jeesusest sai Mr Bean. Aga memm oli südameataki ääre peal, tema tahtis ju head,” naerab Tammann.

Triin Tammann heard a story about this picture in the media. “There was a news story in Aktuaalne Kaamera (news programme Current Camera) where an old Spanish lady was crying when the local heritage protection ‘attacked’ her because she had painted over a historic fresco on the church wall according to her own taste. As a parishioner, she wanted to improve the painting. The woman said whiningly to the officials that as a child she was able to draw. It was so memorable how Jesus became Mr Bean. But the lady was on the verge of a heart attack, she wanted to do good,” Tammann laughs.

Triin Tammann, conservator-restorer at Pärnu Museum, restores objects of inestimable historical value. Her skills range from furniture to paper, but she has a particular interest in the restoration of old documents and books. Tammann restores them step by step, using specific techniques such as applying mild liquids to the paper, dabbing with an eraser, and making delicate repairs with Japanese paper. Her work is slow, precise and requires patience, but it is important for preserving history for future generations.

Päikesetõusu ajal on rannakalurid juba teel teist mõrda tühjendama. Lappajat veetakse slepis, saatjaks kiljuv kajakate parv.

At sunrise, coastal fishermen are already on their way to empty another trap. The other boat, which is being towed behind, is accompanied by a flock of screaming seagulls.

SPRING FISHING FOR BALTIC HERRING IN PÄRNU BAY

For Pärnu County coastal fishermen, fishing for the Baltic herring in the spring is the busiest time of the year. The journey begins in the moonlight before dawn on a kakuam boat, with a brigade of fishermen in a second boat towed behind. This kind of work requires the combined effort of the whole fishing brigade. At sea, the work continues until the herring has been scooped out of the traps. If the weather is good, the sweat and toil of emptying the traps is rewarded with a good dose of picturesque sea views and sunrise.

A BIG DREAM COMES TRUE!

Ulvi Rosenberg is a native of Soomaa. She is a woman with a strong character and lives alone in an old farmhouse, as far from civilisation as is possible in our tiny Estonia. The house slides inexorably towards the river and the walls do not keep warmth. In winter it is below freezing inside. However, Ulvi has dreamed of one thing all her life – if only she could go to sea on a sailboat. Journalist Madis Jürgen and musician Jaanus Nõgisto decided to make this dream come true. The start is from Pirita in the capital.

Ulvi on elus vaid korra varem Tallinna sattunud. Enne pikka reisipäeva tuleb ka hobustele head aega öelda. Ulvi has only been to Tallinn once before in her life. A long day of travelling is ahead and it is time to say goodbye to the horses.

Viljandis on folk, Tartus ülikool ja Pärnus suvi, aga mis on Eesti ühe väiksema linna Püssi nägu? Võib-olla saab päriselt Püssi asjaks tuhamäe jalamil kõmisev festival Püssi Punk. 2004. aastast korraldatud pungifestival oli vahepeal mitmeks aastaks soiku jäänud, aga tuli eelmisel aastal tagasi.

Viljandi has a folk music festival, Tartu has the university and Pärnu has taken the ownership of summer, but what is the niche of Püssi, one of the smallest towns in Estonia? Perhaps the real Püssi thing will be the festival Püssi Punk, which is raging at the foot of the slag heap. The punk festival, which has been organised since 2004, had been on hiatus for several years, but returned last year.

In the decathlon pole vault, all 20 men have completed their jumps. Only Janek Õiglane – name Õiglane means ‘fair’ in Estonian – is left to jump. He has raised the bar to a height of 5.30 metres. If he could clear the bar now, he would improve his personal best by 20 centimetres. The otherwise deafeningly buzzing full house at the Stade de France remains eerily silent. He takes a deep breath and starts, the momentum grows and grows, his quick steps echo in the Olympic Stadium. Reaching top speed, he forcefully pushes the pole into the ground and stretches himself towards the sky... and he clears the bar! Within a split second, before Janek Õiglane has even landed on the mat, the eerie silence of the stadium turns into a deafeningly loud party.

The sheep of the Vana-Vasara farm in Viljandi municipality were attacked by a wolf several times within a few weeks. At the end of August, the owner found an old sheep torn to pieces in the field, and one of the lambs went missing. One sheep came back with bite marks on its neck. The owner Villu Käo bandaged the sheep’s wounds himself with his tender hand so that the animal would heal.

Üle kolmekümne aasta järjest on rabi Breslovi Nahmani järgijad kogunenud sügiseti Kesk-Ukraina linna Umanisse, et palvetada ja tähistada juutide uut aastat ehk roš hašana’d. Eelmisel aastal võõrustas Umani linn circa 50 000 palverändurit üle maailma, seda vaatamata riigis toimuvale sõjale ja tõsiasjale, et nii Ukraina, Iisrael kui ka Ameerika Ühendriigid ei soovitanud teekonda ette võtta. Linn sattus 2023. aastal ka Vene armee raketilöögi alla, kus sihtmärkideks olid elumajad. Breslovi Nahman sängitati Umani linna mulda 19. sajandi alguses.

Ametlikult algab päev veidi pärast kella viit hommikul, kui palverändurid seavad sammud sünagoogi, kus ootab ees ühispalvus. Kolme ruutkilomeetrine kvartal, kus juudid uut aastat vastu võtavad, on niivõrd populaarne, et igapäevaselt samas kvartalis elavad umanlased üürivad oma elupinna palveränduritele paariks päevaks välja. Sellele vaatamata on kõigi palverändurite majutamine suur katsumus. Officially, the day begins shortly after five o’clock in the morning, when pilgrims make their way to the synagogue for a communal prayer. The three-square-kilometre quarter where Jews welcome the New Year is so popular that the residents of Uman who live in the area rent out their homes to the pilgrims for a few days. Nevertheless, accommodating all the pilgrims is a major challenge.

Roš hašana’d Umanis tähistavate juutide päev koosneb suuresti kolmest osast: varahommikul palvus sünagoogis, pärast seda Breslovi Nahmani haua külastus ja seejärel palvus kvartali peatänaval. Kahekorruseline sünagoog, kuhu hommikul kogunetakse, mahutab väidetavalt kuni 5000 palverändurit.

The day for Jews celebrating Rosh Hashanah in Uman largely consists of three parts – an early morning prayer in the synagogue, followed by a visit to the tomb of Nachman of Breslov, and then a prayer on the main street of the quarter.

The two-storey synagogue, where people gather in the morning, is said to hold up to 5000 pilgrims.

ROSH HASHANAH – THE MOST IMPORTANT EVENT OF THE JEWISH RELIGIOUS YEAR

For over thirty years, followers of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov have gathered in the city of Uman in the Central Ukraine every autumn to pray and celebrate the Jewish New Year, or Rosh Hashanah. Last year, the city of Uman hosted some 50,000 pilgrims from around the world, despite the ongoing war in the country and the fact that both Ukraine, Israel and the United States advised against the journey. In 2023, the city also was targeted by Russian army missile strike, that hit residential buildings. Nachman of Breslov was buried in the soil of the town of Uman in the early 19th century.

Sünagoogi seinad on kaetud riiulitega, kust saab endale meelepärase palveraamatu võtta ja pärast tagasi asetada. Enne ametlikku algust lasevad mõned palverändurid veel silma looja, kui on parima istekoha endale välja valinud.

The walls of the synagogue are lined with shelves where you can pick up a prayer book of your choice and put it back afterwards. Before the official start of the celebration, some pilgrims take a little nap once they have chosen the best seat for themselves.

“My whole life passed by driving a trolleybus,” said Olga Siim at 00.42 on Thursday night, after she had parked the last trolleybus in Tallinn at the Paldiski Road depot. The time of Tallinn’s current trolleybuses has finally come to an end, and they have been replaced by buses. The wait for new trolleybuses will be long – they are not expected to arrive in the capital until the first half of 2026. The last journey was very emotional for the long-time trolleybus driver. “There are tears in my eyes. I have a very sad feeling right now.”

Elin Toona, who fled in 1944 as a child with her mother and grandmother, returned to Estonia from Florida three years ago. Mälukaardil ja filmirullidel, mis kaevatakse välja Maailma Kaubanduskeskuse rusude alt neli päeva hiljem, on imekombel alles 154 hetke ühe fotograafi viimsest reportaažist.1 Viimased pildid on tehtud kell 10.28. Just sel minutil variseb kaksiktornidest põhjapoolsem. Bill on ainus fotograaf, ainus ajakirjanik, kes tol viha ja pisarate päeval surma saab.

Miks see pilt ja see lugu on mulle olulised?

Hea ajakirjandusfoto ei sõltu üksnes sellest, kui hästi sa pildistada oskad. Kompaktkaamerate kättesaadavus õpetas meid kõiki päästikule vajutama, pildistavate telefonide tulek võttis maha paljud piirangud ning

tehisaru toodud algoritmid kannavad hoolt, et iga kujutis oleks terav ja täpne. Sünteetiline mõistus seab värvid ja fookuse ning eemaldab kõik üleliigse. Mis jääb siis masinate ja massipiltnike ajastul pressifotograafile?

Mis jääb meile siis, kui meisterlikkus ei loe ja kui tehniline täiuslikkus on igaühel? Närv ja julgus, elukogemus ja kohusetunne? Inimlikkus ja vaist? Meeletus ja kirg?

Kuidas oma inimlikkust, oma närvi, oma elukogemust vaatajale näha anda? Kuidas tabada hetke, konteksti ja emotsiooni nii, et need jutustaksid ehedat ja usaldusväärset lugu? Jutustaksid ausalt, julgelt, valusalt? Millisel viisil otsida tõde maailmas, mis on täis võltsitud ja ilustatud kujutisi?

Uudisfoto ei sünni ainult pressikonverentsidel, mis siis, et toredaid žeste, ilmekaid käepigistusi ja koomilisi hetki leiab sealtki. Et uudist elusana pildile püüda, tuleb kummikud jalga panna, käed mudaseks teha, minna elu keskele. Tuleb mitte peljata ja astuda sammuke lähemale. Astuda isegi siis, kui terve mõistus või elus püsimise ihk sind tagasi hoiab. Jevgeni Maloletka, kes pildistas Mariupolis kuulsa seeria puruks pommitatud sünnitushaiglast, mõistis alles tükk aega pärast päästikule vajutamist, et tema pildid võivad muuta sõja käiku. “Minu töö on olla seal, kus toimub midagi olulist. Sageli tähendab see, et ka ajakirjanik peab võtma riske, et olukorda seestpoolt näha,” ütleb fotograaf, kelle tööd tunnustas nii Pulitzeri kui ka World Press Photo žürii. Sõjas pole ellujäämine sugugi garanteeritud. Sellest, et sa pildi ära teed, üksi ei piisa. Sa pead selle pildi ka vaatajani tooma, ütleb Maloletka. 2

Meie märkamise võimest, lugude äratundmise oskusest, meie siirusest ja julgusest sõltub, millised lood jõuavad inimesteni, millised lood innustavad ja millised lood mõju(ta)vad. Meie võime sündmuste tähendust tajuda, ja tajuda ka sündmuste jäädvustuse mõju ja tähendust, eristabki meid, inimesi, siiani ränikivist.

Fotoreportaaž ei tähenda mitte lihtsalt mitut pilti samal teemal, vaid ennekõike kohustust luua tähendust ja seoseid, näidata asja olemust, selle suhestumist ümbritsevasse ja ka omaenda positsiooni. Portree pole passipilt, vaid peab tooma esile varjatut ning lisama konteksti. Sporti ei saa pildistada, kui sa ei oska näidata jõudu, valu, pingutust, rõõmu. Ja uudispildi jaoks tuleb kõigepealt astuda kas või paar sammu sündmusele lähemale. Astuda isegi siis, kui need sammud viivad sind mugavusest meeletuse poole. Sest ka kirg on üks meeletuse vorme, ja kirglikke ajakirjanikke on meil väga vaja.

A PASSIONATE JOURNEY FROM COMFORT TO MADNESS

What will we be left with if everything we have is taken away? Our passion and courage, our honesty and humanity.

One image has appeared to me in my life and dreams several times. A dusty, tattered messenger bag. A half burnt, battered, but still unmistakably recognisable Canon EOS-1N. Two more cameras in almost the same shabby condition, a handful of fraying film cassettes. Glasses with a layer of opaque emulsion drawn on their lenses by fire and ash. A bundle of plastic cards charred on the left edge, the one on top has a name written in a brisk handwriting and an equally brisk signature on it. In the centre of the card, a man with thinning hairline, younger than me, stares back, captured as many of us inevitably are when we press our backs against the back wall of the passport photo booth, pull in our stomachs and look straight into the lens, trying to seem as young and slim and businesslike as possible.

I first saw him in Washington 23 years ago, at an exhibition alongside very ordinary, everyday objects. An elevator cab, a handbag, a pair of shoes, a baseball cap, a fire engine door. All around, concrete torn by explosions and metal warped by fire.

In the Newseum, dedicated to journalism and journalists, I have over the years, stood many, many times silently in front of a three-storey-high wall, the mosaic surface of which is made up of hundreds and hundreds of images of faces just like the one that stared at me from that tattered entrance card. The bag and the cameras and the work permit and the glasses. It is a memorial to journalists killed while working.

As thousands of people rush away from a building in Manhattan with a doomsday fire raging at the top of it, Bill Biggart, a freelance news photographer who has seen war, grabs his camera bag and presses himself in the opposite direction. Click! Click! The Twin Towers are getting closer and closer. Smoke, flames, sirens, people panicking. Click! Click! The South Tower collapsing into a cloud of dust, a facade scattered like a bloom of flower. Chaos. Click! Click! He’s right here, just on the side, he’s got firefighters in the frame. Click! The hand rises automatically, the man and the machine are working in a well-trained tandem. Click! Click! No other photographer is that close to the event, not right in the middle of hell. Click! Click!

Crash!

A memory card and rolls of film that were dug up from the rubble of the World Trade Centre four days later miraculously contain 154 moments of one photographer’s final report.1 The last photos were taken at 10.28 am. It was at this very minute that the northern one of the Twin Towers collapsed. Bill is the only photographer, the only journalist, to die on that day of anger and tears.

Why is this picture and this story important to me?

A good press photo doesn’t just depend on how good you are at taking pictures. The availability of compact cameras taught us all to press the shutter, the advent of camera phones removed many of the limitations, and the algorithms introduced by artificial intelligence ensure that every image is sharp and precise. Synthetic intelligence adjusts the colours

and focus and removes everything that is superfluous.

So, what is left for the press photographer in the age of machines and mass photography? What will we be left with when mastery counts for nothing, and technical perfection is for everyone? Perception and courage, life experience and conscientiousness? Humanity and instinct? Frenzy and passion?

How can you show your humanity, your perception, your life experience to the viewer? How do you capture the moment, the context and the emotion in a way that tells a genuine and credible story? Would tell it honestly, courageously, painfully? How do you search for truth in a world full of fake and embellished images?

News photos are not only taken at press conferences, even though you can find nice gestures, expressive handshakes and comical moments there too. To capture the news alive in a photo, you must put on your wellies, get your hands muddy, and go into the midst of life. You cannot be intimidated and have to take a step closer. To take that step even when common sense or the will to stay alive holds you back.

Yevgeniy Maloletka, who took the famous series of photos of a bombed-out maternity hospital in Mariupol, only realised that his images could change the course of the war long after he pressed the shutter. “My job is to be where something important is happening. Often that means taking risks as a journalist to see the situation from the inside,” says the photographer, whose work has been recognised by both the Pulitzer and World Press Photo juries. Survival is by no means guaranteed in a war. Just taking the picture is not enough. You also have to bring the image to the audience, says Maloletka.2

Our ability to notice, our ability to recognize stories, our sincerity and courage determine which stories reach people, which stories inspire, and which stories have an impact and influence. Our ability to perceive the meaning of events, and also to perceive the impact and meaning of the reproduction of events, is what still distinguishes us, humans, from the flintstone.

A photo reportage is not just several pictures on the same topic, but above all the obligation to create meaning and connections, to show the essence of the thing, its relationship to the surroundings and also your own position. A portrait is not just a passport photo. It must also bring out the hidden sides and add context. You cannot photograph sports if you cannot show strength, pain, effort, joy. And for the news photo, you first have to take a few steps closer to the event. Even if those steps take you from comfort to frenzy. Because passion is also a form of madness, and we very much need passionate journalists.
