Primary Industries Why Indonesia? Indonesia has a growing middle class and increasingly young urbanised population. Demand for food including fresh produce is expanding along with consumer preference for increased diversity and healthy food options. Western Australia’s reputation as a reliable supplier of clean, safe and high-quality food provides an entry-point for local producers to supply Indonesia’s growing interest in premium food and beverage products. Similarly, as Indonesia battles reduced land availability and food security, there is also an opportunity for Western Australian producers to export their technological expertise to increase productivity in the agrifood industry. The Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA-CEPA), signed in 2020, allows for more than 99% of Australian agricultural products to enter Indonesia duty free. Indonesia also guaranteed the automatic issue of import permits for key products such as live cattle, frozen beef, sheep meat, feed grains, citrus, carrots and potatoes. Historically, Indonesia has consistently been Western Australia’s largest market for wheat and live animal (cattle) exports. IA-CEPA provides an opportunity to expand and diversify our primary industries exports to Indonesia.
