Like I have always done for my scouting throughout the years for deer hunting, I placed my tree stand on a deer run, which had a lot of oak trees and lots of acorns on them. I had been watching a nice eight point in the area. One fall morning I got up and I was going to this tree stand. It had rained all night, but it was quiet in the morning. I went out and set up in the stand. I had my bow hanging on my right side off a limb on the tree. I was just sitting there listening to the water dripping off the leaves of the trees. When all of a sudden when I looked down there was that eight point right in front of me! He didn’t even see or hear me and he was feeding on acorns. I had to move slower to get my bow and my hands off the branch, so that I didn’t frighten him. I finally got my bow in front of me and he looks up, but I didn’t move. He put his head back down and I drew my bow back. I made a text book shot and it goes right through him and the arrow sticks in the ground. This deer reacted different than I had expected, like he didn’t even know that he was hit! He walked slowly away and was still eating on acorns. The deer walked over to a tree and started rubbing his antlers on the tree. I brought my bow up and watched him. This was amazing! A fox squirrel ran down a tree and was barking at him. The buck took a couple more steps and stopped. He got down on his legs really gracefully and put his head down and he was “DEAD”! I was just sitting there up in my stand as that fox squirrel made his way towards me. He ran up a tree and got at the same level I was in the stand. He poked his head around the tree and was barking at me. I took an arrow from my quiver and put it in my bow and I shot him right in the head. This was nice. This was an extra bonus, because I love squirrel hunting. Yet another awesome day hunting in Michigan! “Get outdoors if you can it’s a great place to be. this is Michigan! it doesn’t get any better than this.”

The Michigan Grand Slam is the title given for having the state record of the four Michigan animals that CBM recognizes as trophies by a single hunter. Those four animals are deer, bear, elk, and turkeys. The accomplishment has always been considered so rare. The added challenge of drawing a limited bear tag and particularly a bull elk tag, and to harvest animals that make the record book minimums seems insurmountable. However, it miraculously has been done by a select few. Crow Man is of that select few. SEPTEMBER 2018 THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MICHIGAN 47
