Reasons to Ride JUNE 2025 Digital Edition

FROM THE PUBLISHER

Another riding season is upon us, and once again we are out celebrating the Brotherhood of the Open Road.

While that may sound cheesy, like something you’d see on a Facebook meme or cute poster – it’s something real that we all know and feel. If you’re reading this magazine and have a bike that you’ve taken out past your local coffee shop – chances are it’s why you’re smiling right now. If you’ve picked up the magazine at a local barbershop or bar and never actually ridden a bike – you might be wondering if that’s some sort of club like that one on tv.

The Brotherhood – or Sisterhood – of the Open Road is that sense of comraderie, sense of common spirit that all riders share. It’s the understanding that out on the road there are thousands of destinations to discover and adventures to be had. It’s the realization that getting caught out in the rain or even running out of gas along the way – just adds to the story and experience. It’s why some abhor the electric start and crave the challenge of a kick. It’s why we look on in admiration when we hear of Mary Blackard (see story pgs 32-34) traveling cross country on her bike alone – and it’s why we understand that she really never was. It’s because we understand that as riders – we’re all in this together. When we’re out on the road – or in life in general – we’re all in this together, bound by a kindred spirit that we all share.

It's why when Mary lost her husband, Ray Clemens, the owner of the local Harley dealership (Ray C’s Harley-Davidson) encouraged her to go ahead and live out the dream they shared. He knew what lay ahead of her – and he knew she’d discover not only a new world out on the road but a new family of Brothers and Sisters along the way.

This magazine and our organization is built upon this spirit. We are essentially a cooperative effort to support the local riding community. We work to help support and spread the word of local businesses and celebrate the stories of Mary and a thousand other riders out there discovering themselves. The regional motorcycle magazine is something unique in the publishing world, and why we’ve not only survived but grown during these challenging modern times. We help define the riding community, helping riders identify destinations, businesses, and events that cater to the riders. Riders will travel hundreds of miles to get a hot dog or a fried bologna sandwich, knowing that they will meet other riders along the way and find other riders there. We know that the journey itself is the appeal, not just the dog at the end of the trail. We’re just looking for an excuse to travel that direction.

That’s why I smile every time a young marketing professional or an experienced one from outside the motorcycle world tells me that they don’t believe in “print media”. Sure thousands read this magazine every month in print, but more than 300,000 see it online every month! I can share those numbers and try to explain that we are far more than just a “print magazine”. But they won’t get it.

They don’t understand the connection riders feel when they turn the pages and see the ads for small local bars that they’ve been to – especially ones miles away or in another state. They don’t understand the connection riders will always have to rallies and rides they’ve shared. They don’t understand the sense of Brotherhood that riders share with other riders that they’ve met out on the road. And they most likely will never understand that this magazine is what ties it all together.

My cute response to those marketing “experts” that scoff at the idea of advertising in or supporting a print motorcycle magazine is to reply – “It’s not the Easter Bunny or even Santa Claus.” It’s right there in your hand, you can see for yourself – it’s real! But it’s the spirit behind the concept that they have to experience for themselves in order to really believe – just like those holidays themselves. It’s the spirit that makes it real.

So, I’d like to once again thank you all – for your continued support and faith in our publication and the spirit that it embodies. In these modern days, it’s really something special as far too many lose faith and no longer believe in neither the spirit of Christmas – or the Brotherhood of Open Road. We, though, know better.

Thank you,

D.A. Smith

Rodeo Time!

More local events incorporating riding challenges!

While we all love to ride to events, few of us actually ride at the events we attend. That may change this summer. Several partners will be incorporating riding challenges into upcoming events, and we’re exciting to be a part of the fun.

First up it’s the OHIO BIKE WEEK Burn Out Bash, held at the Mickey Mart on Milan Road just down from Mad River Harley-Davidson on Friday, June 6th at 2pm. This fun little parking lot party is sponsored by Twisted Tea and blew up last year with the addition of Billy Morris on stage and the Reasons To Ride Crew not only hosting a Burn-Out Challenge but also Slow Drags! If you’re not familiar with them, “slow drags” are when two bikes line up and they have to go a distance – say 40-50 ft. The last one to cross the finish line, without putting their feet down, wins! Anyone can compete on just about any bike – although some rides might have an advantage over others, and not the ones you might expect. Of course trikes and anything that stands up on it’s own can’t compete – but all two wheeled motorcycles are welcome.

Then we're headed up to Ray C’s Harley-Davidson in Lapeer, Michigan for their 19th Annual Rodeo Day on Saturday June 14th! While it may seem tame compared to the Rodeo hosted by our Easyriders friends – this Rodeo is a great day that includes a Bike Show, Live Music, a Horsepower Challenge, an Audio Challenge – and yes, slow drags! All are hosted by the Reasons To Ride Crew working with the Ray C’s Team! It’s a fun time for the entire family, and last year they even had a free ice cream truck on site! In fact, it’s free for everyone to attend and there are only fee’s for competing in the trophy competitions. Proceeds from those go to help support local charities and non-profits. This will be our third year hosting the event and it’s gotten bigger every year!

Arsenal Harley-Davidson in Waterford, Michigan is taking things a step further with two days of riding games with their 2025 Summer Games! On Saturday, June 21st – they will be hosting a day of riding games for solo riders. These include barrel racing, “jousting”, and pole in the hole. Then Saturday, July 19th – Arsenal will be hosting competitions for teams, couples riding together on the same bike. These include “cones & balls”, “rodeo poker”, and of course – the “weenie bite challenge”! Admittedly, we’ve never seen a few of these games – but others are old school traditional games that have been a staple for field days and riding rodeos for decades.

And of course, we wrap up the season with the one and only –Easyriders Rodeo in Bloomville, Ohio over Labor Day Weekend. This is mother of all traditional motorcycle events – the one that defines old school across the country. And for all the craziness that happens in the campground there, it’s the two wheeled competitions that make it a RODEO! Weenie Bites, slow races, motorcycle drags, and other rodeo games will have the bikes roaring throughout the weekend. They even have bar stool races for anyone that feels up to trying something new – and fun!

And that’s the whole idea. Come on out and have some fun on your bike! Almost all of the challenges involve slow riding and minimal risk – although some scrapes and falls have occurred. But those pale in comparison to the stories and bragging rights offered up. How many people can say that they took home a rodeo trophy on their Street Glide or put the “pole in the hole” from their Dyna? Who knows – it could be you this summer! And we hope to see you there!

Building the Riding Community

Widows Sons Chapter Recognizes Two Pillars

As part of their annual Night at the Races Fundraiser, the Ohio Widows Sons Chapter XV “3-5-7” recently recognized Amy and David Hunting of Ravenna, Ohio as the recipients of a Community Builder Award. A new component to their program – the Community Builders Award serves to recognize individuals for their community service efforts within their local area. The Widows Sons 3-5-7 Chapter sought to recognize the Huntings for their contributions to both the local riding community and the community at large through the charitable organization they lead – Akron Bikers for Boobs. This organization brings riders together to help those in need through a wide variety of programs and initiatives. While “Bikers for Boobs” or BFB as it’s known is primarily dedicated to raising funds annually for Stewarts Caring Place (stewartscaringplace.org) an organization supporting those struggling with cancer – they impact the lives of many through their broad approach to outreach that the Huntings have developed over the years.

As WS 3-5-7 Chapter President Josh “Postal” Stoltz stated, “Amy and David Hunting set an example for us all by helping so many people in need – throughout the area. ”.

Like just about every other charitable organization out there, Akron Bikers for Boobs has faced a lot of adversity the last several years and has had to adopt new strategies to deal with a steady stream of challenges. While everyone struggled to deal with COVID and all of the challenges that brought, BFB also had to transition through changes in primary sponsorship – including their host dealership. Through it all, Amy and David not only met the challenges – they consistently raised the bar and set an example for others. In fact, despite all the challenges – the least of which was not a rainy day for their primary fundraiser – the Annual Bikers for Boobs Poker Run, they raised an eye-popping record breaking amount for Stewarts Caring Place – OVER $100,000.

They accomplished all of this by leading a dedicated group of volunteers that adhere to a few fundamental approaches –networking with everyone they can and making a year-round commitment to the organization. There’s a lot of lessons that can be taken from this approach, really serving as an example for all that try to support a cause through riding.

Throughout the year, the Huntings and their merry group of riders attend various fundraisers throughout the area – supporting a wide range of riding organizations and the causes they back. In turn, those organizations and their riders come out to support Bikers for Boobs. It’s a pretty basic concept, but one that far too many miss. They support the other groups and are prominently represented at rides and other fundraisers throughout the year. The bright pink BFB sweatshirts are a staple at just about every local event – and everyone knows what they represent.

The numbers speak for themselves. In 2024, the Akron Bikers for Boobs ride had 820 bikes and over 970 riders / passengers. Over 1,300 folks participated in the event – in the rain. After the run and entire year of fundraising efforts, they presented a check for over $103,000 to their primary charity – Stewarts Caring Place. Great job – and thank you for making our community a better place while showing us how it’s done!

The Widows Sons are a Masonic Riding Association dedicated to promoting Freemasonry within the motorcycling community by living a lifestyle demonstrating the core principles of the organization while celebrating brotherhood.

Now a word from our Sponsor

We’re proud to recognize Erskine Law as the Presenting Sponsor of Reasons to Ride in both Michigan and Ohio.

Let’s be honest — there’s no shortage of attorneys out there advertising themselves as “motorcycle attorneys.” These days, it seems like anyone with a leather jacket and access to a bike is suddenly an expert on motorcycle law. But owning or riding a motorcycle doesn’t automatically qualify someone to handle your case when it really counts.

What matters is experience, legal expertise, and a proven track record — not photo ops or gimmicks. While it might sound cool that your attorney rides, it’s far more important that they know how to win.

At Erskine Law, practicing law isn’t a marketing strategy — it’s their mission. Unlike some so-called “motorcycle firms” that prioritize swag bags over courtroom strategy, Erskine Law focuses on what really matters: you, your case, and your rights. They won’t hand your case off to a stranger, sell it down the line, or treat you like a file number. And they don’t gauge your case based on how fast it might settle with the least effort — they’re prepared to go the distance, all the way to trial if needed. That’s not just a promise — it’s what they do.

When you work with Erskine, you get an actual attorney, not a commission-driven rep walking you through a checklist. You’ll get real legal advice, tailored to your situation, from a firm trusted for years by some of the largest companies in the country. Now, that same level of legal firepower is available to you.

Because when an accident happens, and your life changes in a moment, you don’t need someone to polish your bike — you need someone who knows how to fight for you in court. That’s what Erskine Law delivers.

We’re honored to have them as a partner, and we’re even more proud to recommend their services

If you need help following an accident or injury – don’t call a marketing firm, call a real law firm. Erskine Law

MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES

Jumpin’ into June!

My goodness we are just rolling along! It’s June already and quite the month for celebrations and ceremonies! Graduations, weddings, birthday and anniversary parties and even more Bike Blessings!! I thought May was jammed packed with stuff but as I look at June… well hang on honey…we have a lot of roads to travel!

Ever wonder why the bike blessings started? Well let me tune you in…the first one was done in 1999 at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. A Reverand Canon Thomas Miller wanted to bring bikers together for a spiritual moment before riding season began. It wasn’t just about safety; it was about community and respect for life on the road. It’s a time to join with others of like mind and heart to share a moment and prepare hearts for the season ahead. Community and Comradery. What better way can we think of to begin a season of what we enjoy as bikers, blowing the dust off after a hard day or during moments of our lives that can only be settled by the wind and prayer? Some of the best moments of life have been on a motorcycle.

So, what is the big deal then? Are the blessings just a ritual we go through, or could they be more than just a minute in a line of bikes? For us, it’s the opportunity to cover all bikers in prayer and give a bit of hope in the hearts of those we get the honor to pray with. Yes, honor. It is a great honor for us to be there when you need us. To be part of your season of joy and to share the smallest of moments for a season of happiness. We don’t take it lightly either. We want you to know that the Lord is with you wherever you go and in every situation you encounter. We want you to know that you can reach Him when you need Him. We want you to know that His love goes deeper than a prayer line of bikers on a spring day. We want you to know that He’s not just our co-pilot, but our pilot, leading us and guiding us through every curve, every turn, on every path we take. We want all to know He sees and even when we take a wrong turn and mess it up, He is there to pick us up and get us back on track. He’s awesome that way! And that is the big deal…relationship. Relationships grow when we ride together. A group ride, a couple riding together, or just us in the peaceful evening air cruising and enjoying our time with Him, that is if we invite Him along. You’ve seen the cards that say, “He would have ridden a Harley or a motorcycle” right? Well, did you know that God has wheels?

Ezekiel 1:16 “The appearance of the wheels and their workings was like the color of beryl, and all four (living creatures) had the same likeness. The appearance of their workings was, as it were, a wheel in the middle of a wheel”

Ezekiel 1:20 “Wherever the spirit wanted to go, they went, because there the spirit went; and the wheels were lifted

together with them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.”

Ezekiel 3:13 “I also heard the noise of the wings of the living creatures that touched one another, and the noise of the wheels beside them, and a great thunderous noise.”

There it is my friends…the Spirit of the Lord is in the wheels and the wind! So don’t leave home without Him! Invite Him along with you today. Give a little moment to ask for protection and guidance along the way and He will jump right on with you!

One last thing…if you missed any Bike Blessing event and you want to have that moment, contact any CMA member, or better yet, if you see us out and about in your area, come on over and let us know you want the blessing…again, we are always here when you need us!

Time to hit the road…KTRSD!

Mary G.

Sport Touring Corner

Ozark Escape rally

The Motorcycle Sport Touring Association (MSTA) Ozark Escape rally is held annually the first weekend of May in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. It's one of the few MSTA rallies I have not attended, mostly

because it's 690 miles away from my home in Dayton, Ohio. There were four of us going from Ohio- Tim Mullins and Bruce Schweikert were trailering, but Bill Rusk and I decided to ride. It was my first really long trip on the Triumph 900 Rally Pro and I was looking forward to doing it on an ADV style bike.

Our friend Mark Brunk lives near I70 in central Illinois so we rode to his place and stayed overnight to make the trip easier. On the Tuesday ride there, it rained for about 150 of the 330 miles but temps were mild in the 60s. My Klim and Revit gear kept me dry but Bill

got damp in his 10 year old Frogg Toggs. Looking at Wednesday's weather on the Drive Weather app, we saw that if we went south in Illinois, crossed the Mississippi river at Cape Girardeau and took US 60 across Missouri, we could avoid most of the thunderstorms.

Sure enough, as soon as we started heading south we hit beautiful 75 degree weather all the way to Springfield, Missouri, where we took US65 South into Arkansas. In the last 100 miles to Eureka Springs, another thunderstorm system caught up with us and we finished the ride in a downpour. Again my gear did great except for the cuff of my pants that rode up and let water in my boot. The alternate route added a lot of miles- about 515 miles total for the day.

I kept my Samsung S23 phone on the Quadlock wireless charging mount in

the rain. It has an IP68 rating which means it supposedly can withstand submersion up to 5 feet deep in water for up to 30 minutes. The USB-C charging port is not waterproof but I had a rubber plug that kept it dry. It was fine after the first day of light rain and worked fine the whole time (Raindrops hitting the screen made it unusable during the heavy rain as the screen went crazy.) but when we arrived at Eureka Springs the camera lenses had water droplets inside. Not good!

Our hotel was the Best Western Inn of the Ozarks which had many rooms, a convention center and a nice restaurant.

Thursday morning it was sunny, but Bill's gear was soaked and he was exhausted from riding in all the rain. Event coordinator

Jerry James took me on a ride with a few others that featured lunch at the Oark General Store in Oark, AR. Established in 1890, it's the oldest continuously operating store in Arkansas. It was founded by F.M. Nelson to serve the isolated mountain community of Oark, providing groceries, supplies, and a central gathering place.

Most attendees arrived Thursday afternoon and evening including my roommate Tom Bremmer from Illinois. People hung out in the lower parking lot of the hotel and there was plenty of tire kicking and telling lies. The hotel hosts many groups similar to ours. When we arrived there was a group of vintage BMW car owners who left that morning, only to be replaced by a Ford Model T group that afternoon. Rain moved in about 6PM and everyone car-pooled to nearby restaurants for dinner.

Friday morning it was still raining but cleared up and dried off about 10:30AM so Tom and I rode the lunch ride that went to Flat Creek restaurant at Table Rock Lake, MO. There were about 20 of us in three separate riding groups. On the way there we got stuck behind half a dozen Model Ts that were only going less than 20 MPH up some of the hills. Fortunately they turned off pretty quickly.

Saturday Tom and I were joined by Ohio friends Tim and Bruce, plus Debbie Gardiner, a Yamaha Super Tenere rider from Arkansas. We rode the popular Jasper loop and had lunch at the Ozark cafe in Jasper.

Saturday evening was the banquet at the hotel. There were about 70 attendees who had three days of fun roads and nice weather riding during the day. Spent quality time with old friends and made some new acquaintances too.

Sunday it was time to go home. My wet phone had quit working for calls and text by then so Tom and I rode together until he split off on I57 in Illinois and it started to rain shortly thereafter. The temperature dropped to 48 degrees and there was light rain for about 200 miles until I got past Indianapolis. Heated gear was running full blast and I made it home- 690 miles in less than 11 hours. My wife was not happy about me being not being able to take phone calls. The phone had to be replacedfortunately covered by insurance.

What did I learn from the trip? The Triumph is a GREAT long distance bike. Weather protection is not as good as my FJR, but it's 150 pounds lighter plus the rider position and suspension are better. Regardless of claims, phones are not waterproof. My new one is going in the tank bag whenever there is enough rain to put the rain cover on it. While water droplets did cause the screen of my Garmin zumo XT GPS to jump around, it kept working perfectly the entire trip. Use a dedicated GPS if you want to navigate when it rains! Ride safe.

BIKE SHOW REPORT

NEW TROPHIES and MEDALLIONS!

Reasons to Ride has always sought to present unique trophies and awards at the Bike Shows, and this year we are once again kicking things up even more with the introduction of custom acrylic medallions. These custom full color acrylic medallions will be presented to Best of Class and Judges Choice winners at regional and bike night shows this season. We are also developing custom layered trophies for the Best of Show Awards. These medallions will be presented to the exhibitors as part of the awards ceremony, hung around the neck by our own Iron Angels! Later, though, they can be hung on racks or displays – or even mounted onto the bikes. We will also be bringing back the popular wall plaques to go along with the medallions. We love seeing all the pictures of exhibitors displaying the wall plaques on their office, shop, and garage walls – even in their trailers! We will have some of the JUMBO Best of Show plaques as well – but do realize that the 3’ placards aren’t the easiest to take on the bikes! We will have smaller ones also available for those that prefer them.

Check out the custom lanyard displays available online at ReasonsToRide.com

Local SHOP SHOWCASE!

If you’re a local builder or work with a local shop, we’d like to extend an invitation to come out and join us at an upcoming RTR BIKE SHOW! While you’re welcome to join us at any shows, we’d especially like to encourage you to join us at a show in your area. Builders and shops are encouraged to bring your clients out and showcase your work. For the rallies, shops can even set up and offer services during the rallies. Or they might just set up and sell t-shirts and other swag or parts. For shows in their area, shops can show off their work and connect with local riders and future customers. Shops will be able to sponsor their customers in the shows as a means of showcasing their work as well. These sponsorships and even the display space will often be available at NO COST to RtR Advertisers and Sponsors.

For most shows there will be limited space available, so we would encourage everyone to plan ahead. For information:email Info@ReaonsToRide.com or BikeShowInfo@gmail.com

My Riding Adventure

Sixty years ago, my love affair with motorcycles began. I rode every chance I got with whomever would take me. Life in the mid-sixties was certainly a safer time AND God kept His eyes on me! After many years of cycle envy, I bought a new 1978 orange AMF Harley 350. My husband and I took turns getting our cycle endorsements, riding and learning. But, alas, our daughter took precedence and our riding was suspended.

My desire to ride my own Harley did not wane and we planned to someday explore the United States together. Unfortunately, I went on alone, due to my husband’s death in 1996. In 2001, I bought my 2002 Harley Low Rider! My first REASON TO RIDE: Because I finally could! Many classes to hone my skills built confidence. HOG meetings, rides and trips, great new friends, mileage challenges and the tragedy of September 11, 2001 [NEVER FORGET!] filled many hours and days with unforgettable times in the wind. Also, I had the opportunity to go on a Harley Cruise with HOG friends and our bikes. We rode on guided tours around the Islands of St. Thomas, St. Maarten and Puerto Rico. OUTSTANDING!!

In 2011, I graduated from the Low Rider with 165,000+ miles to a new Ultra Limited. REASON #2 TO RIDE: Many more miles with

new acquaintances and dedication to the remembrance of September 11, 2001, especially Flight 93 and those brave heroes who lost their lives in Pennsylvania.

Another Ultra Limited in 2017 continued the wind and sun on my face and the making of more memories as I traveled around America. REASON #3 TO RIDE: I was blessed to reach my goal of riding in each of the 48 contiguous states.

I am now comfortably astride an Army green 2022 Tri Glide Ultra Enthusiast. The change to three wheels was a positive decision and I feel safer as I age. I am part of the Tour of Honor (TOH). We proudly celebrate and honor American Heroes – our veterans, first responders and American citizens who have built this wonderful nation. This association with TOH has given me the BEST REASONS TO RIDE: Honoring those selfless individuals that protect and serve. In addition to the deep friendships that have developed and our shared times of riding together, I am able to visit memorials and statues about which I would not have known if not for the guidance of TOH. With the available lists, maps and locations, I have a mission to see American Doughboys (WWI soldiers), Madonnas of the Trail, Hueys and Cobras, Gold Star Family Memorials (honoring families who lost a military family member), National Cemeteries, 911 Memorials and salutes to K9/War Dog Heroes as well as Veterans’ Memorials.

With TOH research in hand, I planned a trip for May of 2024 to accept the challenge called Sea to Shining Sea. I wanted to visit the 12 Madonnas of the Trail. These are identical statues, other than color, set across America from Bethesda, Maryland to Upland, California on National Old Trails Road. They represent the courageous Prairie Women who bravely traveled this road with their families in the 1800’s; they were dedicated by the DAR in 1928 and 1929.

My Riding Adventure

My decision made to travel West to see seven of the twelve Madonnas, I embarked on the solo trip of a lifetime!! By the time I left home in Michigan, I had added many more different memorials to my route and had the opportunity to take pictures of the seven Madonnas, plus 19 911 memorials (at least one per state except Oklahoma), 18 TOH State sites, in addition to the original Freedom Rock, five Gold Star Families, four Doughboys, three War Dogs, two National Cemeteries and a Huey.

For 18 glorious days, I was blessed to ride roughly 6,500 miles through 18 states. It began across the diverse terrain of Northern USA from Michigan, mostly on I-80. Through Indiana and Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada and Oregon I went, all the way to the Pacific Ocean! That led me to the Red Wood Forest of northern California. OMG!!! I actually parked in one of the trees. A bucket list item, to say the least! Heading south through California and Yosemite National Park, I arrived at Madonna #1 in Upland. From there, I traveled east to Payson, Arizona to visit a lifelong friend before stopping in Springerville, Arizona and Albuquerque, New Mexico to see Madonnas #2 and #3. Being so close, I took a short detour to Vega, Texas to view a 911 memorial there. Cutting back west to New Mexico and then north through the panhandle of Oklahoma, I was headed to Madonna #4 in Lamar, Colorado – one of my favorite states! Council Grove, Kansas is home to the fifth Madonna of my journey. While in Kansas, I stopped in Lansing to hug my daughter and son-in-law. The sixth Madonna visited was in Lexington, Missouri. Returning to my Michigan home, I stopped in Vandalia, Illinois visiting the final Madonna #7 of the trip. My soul was filled with joy! What an experience!!

Of course, the enthusiasm did not end. In June, the quest continued East. Two friends of mine joined me on the next leg of the journey to see the remaining 5 Madonnas. Our first was in Richmond, Indiana (#8). Then we traveled on to Springfield, Ohio for #9. Wheeling, West Virginia has Madonna #10. We went to Beallesville, Pennsylvania next to see Madonna #11 and finally, in downtown Bethesda, Maryland, hidden between buildings, was Madonna of the Trail #12. I was elated to share my conquest with my riding buddies.

As we traveled, visiting other memorials brought miles of pleasure and honor through Indiana, Ohio and West Virginia. While in Ohio, we happened upon the gravesite of Annie Oakley near Brook. Our visit to the Flight 93 Memorial in Stoystown, Pennsylvania always fills our souls with thoughts and prayers for the 40 heroes who died there protecting the USA. New Jersey included the Tear Drop Memorial (911) presented to the USA by Russia and Empty Sky Memorial which is New Jersey’s tribute to the state’s 911 victims. Both look across the Hudson River to New York City and the new skyscraper named One World Trade Center. Our totals were 11 911 memorials, four TOH state sites, three War Dogs and one each of a Huey, Gold Star Families and Doughboy, in addition to the five Madonnas. Our voyage was 1,750 miles.

REASONS TO RIDE for me now are many. I have the desire and purpose to honor and thank those who have served or are serving this wonderful country, as often as I can. NEVER FORGET 9/11 and thank those who have maintained the freedoms we enjoy every day in these United States. GOD BLESS AMERICA!

25th Anniversary OHIO BIKE WEEK 2025

May 30 – June 7, 2025 Sandusky Ohio www.OhioBikeWeek.com

It’s the 25th Anniversary of Ohio Bike Week! It started as a State HOG Rally and has since evolved into the “Largest Motorcycle Event in the Midwest” and one of the largest in the nation! It draws riders from across the Midwest and nation to the shores of Lake Erie. It’s call for riders to come and celebrate the start of riding season on America’s North Coast. The ten days of rides and activities culminate with the “World Famous Block Party” the 2nd weekend on the streets of downtown Sandusky.

The rally kicks off the first weekend at Mad River Harley-Davidson and then expands with the Block Party in downtown Sandusky. The Block Party will once again run along the shoreline, centering around the Jackson Street and Barrel House piers – right on the water. Jackson Street offers a broad park-like setting surrounding the big national stage on the water. You couldn’t ask for a more chill place to enjoy a concert with thousands of brothers and sisters. Then there’s the Barrel House Pier – which is Party Central and the place to go for great music and to meet up with folks at one of the coolest “Biker Bars” in the country in the midst of the Rally.

Ohio Bike Week is built around a rather unique concept – just throw a giant party, with good music, but make all the shows FREE. There are VIP areas, but you can see all the bands – including the national acts – without spending a dime. The organizers are hoping, though, that if you’re having a great time – you’ll support the vendors and maybe pick up a shirt or two along the way.

Last year’s Rally was one of the best ever – with RECORD BREAKING numbers attending the Block Party and feature concerts!

Over the years, Ohio Bike Week has constantly evolved as rally organizers have sought to further develop their concept and bring even more riders together each year. And it’s really the riders that make this rally. Certainly there are a lot of really cool places to go and things to see along the “Vacationland” stretch of Lake Erie, but it’s the folks that really separate this from other rallies for us. Ohio Bike Week is once again offering a VIP All-Access Pass which allows you to get upfront and personal with the performers. A limited number of these are available for purchase through OhioBikeWeek.com These always include a lot of bang for the buck – and are a great way to show your support for the Rally. This year they are offering a limited number of discounted VIP Block Party Passes which includes access to the VIP areas as well as a limited edition laminate that is always the coolest souvenir of the Rally. Ohio Bike Week features an Official Ride each day, and these rides have become as much a tradition as the Rally itself. The Wednesday Kelley’s Island Dice Run and the Jesse James Dupree Charity Ride (Thursday) are two of the long standing favorites. And of course the George Roeder Memorial Parade on the second Saturday is a site to behold. You can find out more information on each of the rides at OhioBikeWeek.com

OBW BURNOUT BASH

Friday, June 6th 2pm– Mickey Mart 4701 Milan Rd, Sandusky

Last year’s Burnout Bash was the hit party of the week, reminiscent of the old pool parties for those that attended. It featured a mix of asphalt craziness including burnouts and slow drag races – with rock stars and Twisted Tea girls on stage! It was a blast, and the craziness is returning for a 2nd Edition!

This year’s Burnout Bash will feature AWARDS for BEST, LONGEST, and LOUDEST burnouts; slow drag races, and NEW THIS YEAR: the Official Ohio Bike Week BASS + AUDIO COMPETITION - a judged, technical competition! Billy Morris and the Sunset Strip will be performing live – and the Reasons To Ride Crew will once again be hosting the party! For those OBW Veterans, think “Pool Party with Burnouts!”.

NEW SOUND CATEGORIES and BASS CHALLENGES!

New TECHNICAL aspects added and improved pre-registration options.

We are proud to announce our new SOUND COMPETITION PROGRAM, developed in partnership with Bruce Dulgar, of Altered Sounds in London OH. Bruce, a veteran mobile audio professional and producer of Bass Wars events, has developed a new motorcycle audio series called S.A.C.K. – Sound and Competition Kings! This is a technical audio competition utilizing state of the art technology, as well as scoring by judges, across multiple classes. Outlined below, this program will offer an objective competition for those looking for such a premium challenge. However, Reasons To Ride will still offer the popular crowd driven audio challenges as part of our Bike Shows. The S.A.C.K. competitions will be a separate program in most cases, although the winners will be recognized and sometimes exhibited as part of our larger rally shows.

We will be introducing the S.A.C.K. Motorcycle Audio + Bass Competition as part of OHIO BIKE

WEEK!

The audio judging station will be set up at the MICKEY MART at 4701 Milan Road in Sandusky on Thursday, June 5th and Friday, June 6th as part of the OHIO BIKE WEEK Audio Competition and BURNOUT BASH. Please note that during OHIO BIKE WEEK, sound trials can be scheduled in advance in order to keep things moving throughout the day. Sound and Competition Kings

Where sound bites harder, lights shine louder, and pipes roar like thunder!

This isn’t just a competition—it’s a full-throttle showcase of audio insanity, mechanical flex, and electrified style. With five wild contests and multiple classes to keep things fair, there’s a lane for every rider ready to bring the noise (and maybe a little fire).

How it works

The competition opens up 5 different contests: Sound Quality (Bike Wars), Sound Pressure, Loud Pipes, and Light it Loud. Standard registration is for just one contest of choice, however optionally competing in multiple sections can be added. Each section contains classes that separate the contestants based on modifications.

Contest 1: Sound Quality (Bike Wars)

• Class 1- Street Style Stock 1st, 2nd, 3rd

o Factory builds up to 4 speakers

• Class 2- Street Style Modified

o Builds up to 10 speakers

• Class 3- Extreme Cycle

o Unlimited all out set ups

Contest 2: Sound Pressure

• Class 1- Ported Subwoofer(s)

o Measured with a microphone placed on the diver seat

• Class 2- Sealed Subwoofer(s)

o Measured with a microphone placed on the diver seat

Contest 3: Loud Pipes

• Measures the decibel level of the exhaust 6 ft. away from the furthest point of the rear of the bike.

Contest 4 + 5: Light it Loud

• Class 1: LED Lights

o Best lights in the show

• Class 2: Flamethrower (NOT at all shows, depends on venue.)

o Best exhaust fire in the show

Judging and Point Scale

With a 3 judge panel, each class will have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. For Bike Wars judges will use the following 5 criteria to give a rating on a 10 pt. scale totaling up to 50 pts. After all judges submit their score card, the contestant’s final score will be the average. For the sections Sound Pressure and Loud Pipes, the winning contests would have the highest meter reading. And then lastly, the section Light it Loud winners will be chosen based on the panel's choice.

Bike Wars Judging Criteria

• Song Choice → 10 pt

• Clarity → 10 pt

• 360 Sound → 10 pt

• Loudness/Volume → 10 pt

• Full Frequency Sound → 10pt

This is your playground. Pick your class, prep your ride, and let’s see who really runs the sound streets. LET’S GET LOUD!

25th Anniversary OHIO BIKE WEEK 2025

May 30 – June 7, 2025 Sandusky Ohio

Key Stops -

JACK DANIEL’S BARREL HOUSE SALOON

Certainly, our favorite place to escape to during the Block Party is the back outside deck at the JD Barrel House. (Just don’t tell anyone… we want to keep it a secret!) No matter what’s going on a few feet behind you in the Saloon – looking out over the water is amazingly relaxing. Then when you’re ready – turn around and step back into the chaos at the undisputed PARTY HQ of OBW!

The Jack Daniel’s Barrel House Saloon is at the end of the Barrel House Pier – which during Bike Week is stocked full of vendors, motorcycles, an occasional stage and bar or two. But as you make your way back, it’s clear you’re making your way “through court” to reach the KING of BIKE WEEK BARS. This is always where the party is – and this year, the entertainment is second to NONE!

RALLY TIP:

Many of the HARD-CORE Party Bands are scheduled at the Barrell House, and you’ll want to visit their Facebook page for the final schedule and any updates (that will surely happen). This is always the closing stage in terms of end of the night performances and is the go-to place in times of inclement weather.

MAD RIVER H-D

Mad River Harley-Davidson is the presenting sponsor of Ohio Bike Week and plays host to Rally HQ for the week. For most folks, this is the landing spot for when they arrive in Sandusky. You can pick up your VIP and Concert tickets within the dealership, and the lot is filled with vendors and hundreds of bikes for sale! Last year, they added the Mad River Saloon – which was an undisputed hit with live music and fun throughout the entire week!

The other big attraction at Mad River H-D is the Harley-Davidson Factory Demo Trucks. You can stop by and test ride all the new Harley’s – including the new ROAD GLIDE, Pan America, the Sportster S, and even ALL THE CVO’s! You’ll want to visit the Ohio Bike Week Facebook page or website to confirm the schedule for the demo rides. They are traditionally not there the last Sunday and will close down if the weather is considered adverse.

Special Thanks to Maggie Hrovat, David Eggert, Jennifer Gore, and Dan Hare for Bike Week photographs.

Carrying While Riding a Motorcycle

The reasons why we ride are as varied as the number of different makes, models, and styles of motorcycles on the road. I fall into the “way of life” category and log in the neighborhood of 10,000 miles per year. My yearly riding profile consists of daily commuting, errands, rallies, and at least two long-haul (2.5k+ mile) trips.

Through all these years and miles on a motorcycle, I have managed to carry in some form the majority of the time. My experiences while riding, my evolution as a firearms instructor, as well as student questions have given me time to really think about concealed carry while riding. My thoughts on the “why,” “how,” and strategies for success have evolved over the years based on these factors.

If pocket carry is used, you most likely will need to shift and/ or stand to make room for the draw.

To come up with a strategy, you first need to apply the plausibility principle: What are the most probable and plausible situations you could encounter while riding where you would need to defend yourself with a firearm? The situations while riding a motorcycle are basically the same as if you were in a car — the situations all involve being stopped. The quick run to the store, getting gas, stopped at a traffic signal or sign, taking a break at a rest area, and the list goes on of the different places you would stop. The major difference is that sitting on a motorcycle, you don’t have an intermediate barrier to give yourself extra time to react and to provide cover or concealment.

Let’s quickly cover that statement about carrying left-handed for “just in case” scenarios while riding. To be clear, I have heard this from multiple sources (students as well as strangers at rallies). Is it possible that someone could threaten your life while riding down the road? Absolutely! This usually comes from being tailgated or having your right of way taken. In these situations, your first reaction is to get out of the way, come to a stop, or some other evasive maneuver, not draw your gun. I submit that even if in some post-apocalyptic anomaly where someone starts shooting at you while riding, your first action should still be escape, evade, or safely come to a stop. You are already in a compromised position by being on two wheels and with no steel cage surrounding you. Taking one hand off the bars to draw a weapon only magnifies your bad position.

Consistency

The second area I like to look at when developing a strategy is consistency. We all have limited time, money, and energy, so whatever we do that is different from our primary carry method, some portion of time needs to be dedicated to training. For this reason, I recommend that whenever possible, carry in the same manner and position while riding as you do when walking around.

I recognize that this isn’t always possible, based on things like the type of motorcycle you ride and how you’re positioned on the bike. If your everyday carry is inside-the-waistband appendix and you ride a sport bike,

I am pretty sure this wouldn’t be comfortable (or good for the tank paint). In a case like this, let’s say the person switches to a shoulder holster while riding. They will most likely be wearing a jacket or vest for concealment. This alternative carry method must be trained and should be done wearing the same cover garment worn while riding. The context of wearing the cover garment provides the sensory perception for setting and developing the neural pathways for a consistent response.

Methods

On-Body

Riding vest with built-in holster is a possible alternative carry method and should be included in your training.

In my opinion, on-body carry is preferable to off-body whenever possible. Remember the plausibility principle and when you are most likely to need to defend yourself — while stopped or at some point after you have parked and dismounted. It’s a big plus to have the gun readily available if it’s needed, and you don’t have to worry about finding a private spot to transition from a storage location.

Now for the downside. I was a Motorcycle Safety Foundation Certified Instructor as a RiderCoach for my state. I began every class with the statement, “There are two types of riders: those that will go down and those that have gone down.” That said, the typical on-body carry positions don’t dissuade me from still recommending on-body whenever possible. The gun safety (or safeties) and holster (covering the trigger) should be more than enough to keep the gun from going “bang” in the event of a crash.

Depending on where it is on your body, there’s a good chance you will land on the gun. And depending on the type of retention, it’s possible it could come out of the holster when you go down. So keep in mind where you carry and what the chances are of it being an impact area should you go down. Some of the impact areas are subject to your body type, type of motorcycle, and your position while riding. But there is one type of carry method I don’t think anyone should ever consider while riding: small-of-the-back carry. It’s bad enough you have worry about being injured in an accident, so why put a hunk of metal and polymer right up against your spine and increase the potential of severe injury or paralysis?

One final thing to consider with on-body carry. When riding down the road, you are “in the wind” and it’s pushing your pant legs up, making the bottom of your shirt flap around (and sometimes ride up), as well as trying to push items out of your pockets. This is why I highly recommend wearing a jacket, vest, or some other cover garment that has a strong zipper (or snaps) and will not easily ride up. Also, if you are going with pocket carry, make sure to use a good holster that has enough tack and/or is shaped such that it will stay in your pocket (or the pocket has a closure). One note on pocket carry: if you need to access the gun immediately upon stopping, you most likely will need

to shift your body to open up room in the pocket and pant leg to complete the draw. If this applies, make sure it is incorporated into your training.

Off-Body

Fanny pack is a convenient and covert option for offbody carry.

Going back again to my days of teaching new riders, here’s another quote from every class: “Everyone has a different definition of risky behavior or what risk they are willing to accept.” Maybe you aren’t willing to accept the perceived additional risk of on-body carry while riding, or maybe off-body is your preferred method out of necessity. Off-body is storing the gun in a saddle bag, tour pack, tank bang, or some other variant not attached to you while riding.

The plus side of this method is you don’t have to worry about the on-body downsides, meaning the consequences associated with a crash or your cover garment riding up and exposing your gun. On the minus side is the fact that you don’t have immediate weapon access upon stopping. Here are some things to consider with off-body carry. When stopping, are

you going to transition to on-body? If so, develop a routine when stopping, such as finding a private area to perform the transition without detection and then moving to your desired parking spot (or gas pump). Another solution that’s convenient for on- or off-body motorcycle concealed carry is the fanny pack. I know people who use this method and, when they stop, the first thing they do on dismount is pull out the fanny pack and strap it on. I’ve heard that the fanny pack screams “guy with gun,” but the evidence doesn’t support that argument.

Companies such as Corporate Travel Safety make motorcycle-specific gun vaults.

When carrying your firearm in one of your bags, understand that, if you are in an accident, the contents of your bags may be strewn everywhere (aka the “yard sale”). Because of this possibility, I strongly recommend putting the gun not only in a holster but also in another bag or, better yet, invest in a “vault” made for your motorcycle.

Final Thoughts

You may be wondering why I didn’t cover rides where you cross state lines. There are a couple of reasons for this. First, because it is no different than travelling in a car. You must plan ahead and decide your strategy for carry and storage accordingly. Second, with laws constantly changing, you have to do your own research and contact the necessary authorities for clarification.

Hopefully I have provided the information needed to develop a strategy for motorcycle concealed carry while enjoying the freedom found on the back of a motorcycle.

RECIPES

Crispy Cheddar Chicken Tacos

Ingredients:

• 1 lb (450 g) chicken thighs, boneless and skinless

• 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

• 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

• 1/2 tsp paprika

• 1/2 tsp garlic powder

• 1/2 tsp onion powder

• 1/2 tsp salt

• 1/4 tsp black pepper

• 2 large eggs, beaten

• Vegetable oil, for frying

• 8 small tortillas

• Toppings: shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, avocado slices, sour cream, salsa

Directions:

• Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

• In a shallow bowl, mix flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.

• Dredge each chicken thigh in the flour mixture, then dip in beaten eggs, and coat with shredded cheddar cheese.

• Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Fry chicken thighs until golden brown and crispy, about 4-5 minutes per side.

• Transfer cooked chicken to a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes, or until fully cooked.

• Slice the chicken into strips and serve in tortillas with your favorite toppings.

Sticky Honey Garlic Sausage Pasta Skillet

Ingredients

• 8 ounces penne or rotini pasta or preferred pasta variety

• 1 pound Italian smoked, or chicken sausage, sliced into ½-inch rounds

• 3 cloves garlic minced

• ¼ cup honey

• ¼ cup low-sodium soy sauce optional

• 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

• ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes optional; adjust according to preference

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

• Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

• Fresh parsley finely chopped, for garnish

Instructions

• Bring a large pot of salted water to a rolling boil. Add the pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente, typically 8–10 minutes. Reserve 1 cup of the pasta cooking water. Drain the pasta and set it aside

• Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or sauté pan over medium heat. Add the sliced sausage to the pan and cook for approximately 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until browned and caramelized. Reduce the heat to medium-low, add the minced garlic, and sauté for an additional 1 minute, ensuring the garlic becomes fragrant but does not burn.

• Prepare the Sauce

• In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the honey, soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, and red pepper flakes. Pour this mixture into the skillet, stirring to combine with the sausage and garlic. Allow the sauce to simmer for 2–3 minutes, stirring frequently, until it thickens slightly and evenly coats the sausage.

• Combine the Pasta and Sauce

• Add the cooked pasta to the skillet. Using tongs or a spatula, gently toss the pasta with the sausage and sauce until thoroughly coated. If the mixture appears too thick, gradually incorporate the reserved pasta water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the desired consistency is achieved.
