Reasons to Ride October 2025

FROM THE PUBLISHER

I’m confident that the death of Charlie Kirk will go down as one of the most critical points in our nation’s history – as it has appeared to galvanize our nation in a manner not seen since 9/11. In many ways, though, his assassination is a much more personal affront because it forces us to reconsider so much of ourselves.

This is not a discussion about “riding” – but rather about “living”. How should we be living our lives? For many of us, we ride as a means of coping with a crazy world that seems intent on pigeonholing us into a small box with routines defined for us. Jumping on a motorcycle allows us to break free of that and to redefine ourselves.

I had admittedly just started learning about Charlie Kirk in the month’s leading up to his death. I had just started clicking on the countless reels and video clips that others have put using tid bits of his campus debates. It was hard not to be enthralled by his words – he was taking on all challengers and responding boldly and without any hesitation. It was hard to believe that these scenes weren’t being staged, but after watching so many of the clips – it was clear that he really was that good, in every sense of the word.

Charlie Kirk was incredibly sharp and quick witted, and he seemed to draw on a never-ending wealth of knowledge. Most of the clips before his death focused on divisive and almost shocking questions that were thrown at him, of which he took them all. And in each case, he responded decisively and with clear facts to back his position. Then after his death, I started watching the more complete videos and I discovered that it wasn’t just a wealth of statistics that drove his arguments – it was really his unwavering faith.

Charlie is a devout Christian and that really defines his entire approach to life. He seems to have had a faith and passion within him that seems almost biblical in itself. He listened and considered the position of those challenging him. Even when he was personally attacked and viciously slandered by those standing at the microphone across from him, he never seemed to waver. Sometimes he would respond boldly and decisively, especially when it came to a few critical issues; but he never seemed to lose control. In many cases, he almost seemed amused or even ashamed by the words being thrown at him. I can easily imagine him shaking his head inside, while he prayed “Lord, forgive them – they know not what they are saying…”

I could go on all day but simply put – Charlie was an amazing man. And we are now left wondering who could possibly fill those shoes. Who can speak the words that we all need to hear, who can hold the other side accountable when they are simply spewing unsubstantiated rhetoric and hate? The simple truth is that we all need to.

We all need to step up and stop accepting less from the “other side” –and stop accepting less from ourselves.

So while many of us RIDE for a REASON, supporting charities and causes we believe in with our bikes – the real challenge is for us to LIVE FOR A REASON. We need to be the people we know we should be every day, every moment, and in every exchange we have with others.

We need to be Charlie Kirk. We need to live with faith in our hearts and our actions need to exemplify the beliefs that matter to us. Nothing less.

That is the legacy of Charlie Kirk, in a brutally personal manner. And if we accept that challenge, we are going to ignite a fire in this nation and change the world. The potential is limitless, but it needs to start with each of us.

Thank you,

Layering Your Motorcycle Gear

A few suggestions for Staying Safe and Comfortable on the Road

This time of year - riding a motorcycle can expose you to changing weather conditions – including wind, temperatures, and rain (maybe even ice and snow!) It’s important that you dress appropriately –and we usually recommend layering your riding gear. Layering not only offers better protection but also enhances comfort, allowing you to adapt to various climates and riding situations.

Why Layering Matters

Layering motorcycle gear serves two primary purposes: safety and comfort. Multiple layers can absorb impact, resist abrasion, and regulate body temperature. By understanding how to layer effectively, you can ensure you are protected against both the elements and potential accidents.

The Three-Layer System

Motorcycle gear layering typically follows a three-layer system: base, mid, and outer layers. Each layer serves a specific function, and choosing the right materials ensures optimal performance.

Base Layer

Purpose: Wicks moisture away from your skin to keep you dry and comfortable.

Materials: Synthetic fabrics like polyester, merino wool, or technical blends. Avoid cotton, as it holds moisture and can make you cold.

Layering for Different Seasons

Cold Weather: Use a moisture-wicking base layer, a thick insulating mid-layer (such as fleece or heated gear), and a windproof, waterproof outer shell. Consider thermal liners in pants and jackets, and insulated gloves and boots.

Features: Lightweight, breathable, and close-fitting to maximize moisture transport.

Mid Layer

Purpose: Provides insulation by trapping body heat.

· Materials: Fleece, down, or synthetic insulating fabrics.

· Features: Should be warm but not bulky, allowing freedom of movement and proper fit under the outer shell.

Outer Layer (Shell)

· Purpose: Offers abrasion resistance, impact protection, and weatherproofing.

· Materials: Leather or textile (such as Cordura or Gore-Tex), often with built-in armor at key impact points (shoulders, elbows, knees, back).

· Features: Waterproof and windproof capabilities, adjustable ventilation, and high-visibility elements for safety.

Warm Weather: Opt for a lightweight, breathable base layer and a ventilated, protective outer shell. Some riders skip the midlayer but should still prioritize abrasion and impact protection. Mesh gear helps with airflow while maintaining safety.

· Wet Conditions: Ensure your outer layer is waterproof or use rain-specific gear. Carrying compact rain liners or suits over your protective gear can be useful for unexpected downpours.

Additional Tips for Effective Layering

· Fit Matters: Each layer should fit comfortably without restricting movement or causing bunching. Try on all layers together to ensure compatibility.

· Adjust as Needed: Choose removable liners or packable layers to adapt to temperature changes throughout your ride.

· Don’t Forget Accessories: Layering also applies to gloves, socks, neck warmers, and balaclavas, which can make a significant difference in comfort and protection.

· Maintain Visibility: Make sure your outermost layer includes reflective materials or high-visibility colors, especially in low-light or inclement weather.

Layering your motorcycle gear is an essential part of safe and comfortable riding. By understanding the purpose of each layer and choosing the right materials, you can prepare for any weather while ensuring maximum protection. Always invest in quality gear and adapt your layers to match your riding conditions for the best experience on the road.

Dress for THE RIDE, not just the SLIDE.

While many say the opposite, the real truth is that if you don’t find yourself comfortable in your protective gear, you’re not likely going to wear it. It’s also a hard truth that if you think you look like an idiot – you may also not wear the stuff that’s meant to keep you safe. And then, if you do slide… the fancy safety gear isn’t going to do you much good in your closet.

Why we strongly recommend TOBACCO MOTORWEAR. Admittedly, we first ordered some of their gear because we thought it looked really cool. And if we could justify ordering because it was safer – all the better! And then we got it and discovered that not only does the stuff look really cool and is essentially “bullet proof” (made out of genuine Kevlar) – it’s also really comfortable. So, I’spent most of the summer riding with one of the Bandito Riding Shirts (see stripped jacket looking piece to the right) and a pair of their American Archetype Riding Jeans. Now first off, these are expensive items – especially for someone as notoriously “cost conscious” as myself. HOWEVER, I learned some time ago that spending a little more for something that’s really well made and will last – especially if it’s legitimately safer for you – is money well spent. And both of these items are VERY well made, and it’s easy to see how they will help protect me in time of need. BOTH of them are made with DUPONT KEVLAR at key points and have space for removable D30 armor. Additionally, they are surprisingly comfortable. Despite having the Kevlar sewn in – the canvas and denim are amazingly flexible and still breath. And yes, I think they look cool as well. So –based upon comfort and looks, sure I’m wearing them often. And oh, yeah.. if I go on a slide – they will help protect my skin! Check them out online at TobaccoMotorwear.com.

Reasons to Ride on You Tube

Yet another platform for riding info!

RtR is proud to announce that we’ve added a new YouTube channel for sharing information with riders. We have accumulated over 15 years worth of videos on Facebook and other services, but those are spread all over and some sites are now talking about cutting back on the old stuff. So we’ve decided to start developing a library of videos that are more easily accessible on YouTube. We will still to the reels and Live Ride Reports on Facebook, but we will be moving more and more content over to the new YouTube channel.

HELP WANTED: VETERANS

AFFAIRS EDITOR

Help support local veterans through Reasons To Ride

We will also start sorted playlists with Ride Reports, Ride Stop Profiles, and Event Previews. It’s our intention to build the channel into a resource that folks can access for helpful information and maybe a spot for ideas on new rides and destinations to visit.

I’m also especially proud to share that the channel and unique content on it are being managed by my son Cole. He took the initiative to start the channel and has been working on developing new content for it. With that in mind, we are committing to this being a family friendly format which we hope everyone will appreciate and respect.

Since our launch more than 15 years ago, the RtR Crew has been dedicated to helping to support local charitable organizations, nonprofit events, and those in need. Of particular focus has always been the Veteran Community. We believe strongly that we need to not only recognize but help support those that have sacrificed for our community and nation.

As part of this commitment, we have actively sought out and worked to support Veterans organizations within the motorcycle community. We have regular features such as our “SERVICE NOTES” columns and our annual Veterans Edition.

We are looking to bring on a VETERANS AFFAIRS EDITOR as a member of our team to help direct and drive this effort. This individual does not have to have any publishing or journalism experience – and doesn’t even have to be a Veteran, although we believe that would certainly help. While the position itself is “volunteer”, financial compensation is available through sponsorships and corporate support if desired. However, this is not a “sales” position and RtR has NO desire to retain revenues generated by this program. For more than 15 years we have actively supported grass roots veterans’ organizations and ran hundreds, if not thousands, of ads and notices for events free of charge for them. And as proud as we are of this record, we want to do even more in 2025.

We’re looking for someone with a passion for the Veteran community that can help us establish a more consistent and effective resource for local Vets and their families. If you’re interested in this position, please shoot us an email at Info@ ReasonsToRide.com In addition to an overall Veterans Affairs Editor position, we have additional opportunities for folks in more regional positions. So location is not necessarily a major issue. The primary requirements are being organized, being able to talk to folks, and having a dedication to the Veterans Community.

Join now to help with our upcoming VETERAN’S EDITION, coming out this Fall.

Email us at Info@ReasonsToRide.com with your contact information.

SUBSCRIBE and WIN!

To help get the channel going, we would like to invite everyone to stop by and consider hitting the “subscribe” button. If you find something you like and appreciate what we’re building, you might consider subscribing and possibly sharing to your page. If you do – and include the #ReasonsToRide tag on your post, you will have the chance to win prizes as part of our Ride n Win Challenge.. possibly even that ’49 Harley or $500 GC! We will be awarding at least 20 prizes a month based upon the YouTube subscriptions!

MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES

Let’s just do it!

Hello October! It’s the 10th month already and we are sliding into home…three hits, no errors and we are up by three. The bases are loaded, John Henry is up to bat, and he’s already had one homer in this game…will he do it again?!

If you’re a baseball fan, these kinds of games have you up on your seat with your heart pounding while in great anticipation of the next pitch. What will happen next? Will he get another home run? Will the pitcher strike him out? The questions just roll around in your mind. Well, life is kind of like that ball game. We never know what is going to happen, when it will happen and if we will even survive the next go around. We all face challenges, and somehow, we all survive through them, even though we think we can’t. Personally, the motto is: “Can’t never did anything except cry in the corner.” Not too many tears have been shed in that respect on this end of the typewriter.

This leads me to the enthusiasm of many of our members in CMA and I am sure it holds true in many other groups as well. We have the ones who say, “Let’s do it!” when given an opportunity to serve or just go to an event, and then there are those who say, “Well, I don’t know. I may have other obligations that day, I don’t want to commit myself to something just yet. What if ….” What if is just as negative as ‘I can’t’. There is always an opportunity to say no, but when will the ‘yes’ be more quickly used than the ‘no’? What does it take to get enthusiastic about getting out and just going and doing? How do we get motivated to run instead of walk, move instead of just sit? Here's a little hint…check your heart. What gets the heart pumping? Movement. What keeps the heart clean? Action.

In the ministry of CMA, we are celebrating 50 years of ministry this month. If you didn’t know, it started with one man, Herb Shreve, who was a Pastor in a little country church in Arkansas. He was given an opportunity to reach out to the motorcycling world and share the love of Jesus with them. He didn’t know how to start, talked to his church, they looked at him like deer in the headlights. So, he moved out in faith and put an ad in a motorcycle magazine that read, ‘looking for Christians that want to start a Christian Motorcyclists group. Contact…’ and that was it. Hundreds of people from all over the US responded! Thus, was born, in 1975, the Christian Motorcyclists Association. Herb picked up the ball and started running/riding with it. His heart began a movement that turned into an action that has lasted for 50 years. The number of members grew from hundreds to thousands and spread outside of the US into 38 other countries! All because he decided to ‘Just do it!’

Many of us have the same attitude… ‘it’s raining…just do it.’ ‘It’s hot…just do it.’ ‘It’s pointless, just do it.’ ‘No one wants us there… just do it.’ Do it for the ministry, do it to make a difference, do it for the one who may not have heard, do it for the one who may be hurting, do it for your own self encouragement, do it for Jesus. Just do it. Look, there are many other ministries out there going through the same questions and wondering why do we go and do? It seems no one is listening. However, there is always at least one and we have a commissioned mandate to go and tell. Don’t be discouraged, go for the one, go until you’re done, but mostly, go for the Son. You may be asking, what does this have to do with baseball? Well, let me tell you the rest of the story…Ol’ John Henry got up to the plate, his confidence was high and he was ready. The first pitch came, it was a swing and a miss. The second pitch came, it was also a swing and a miss! Holy moly! What if he strikes out? What if he hits a fly ball? What if he fouls? The questions rolled around in the

minds of the fans…but not John Henry’s. He was not looking at the misses, he was looking at the next opportunity to swing and swing he did! It was another home run!!

The game was won and the trophy was sealed, ol’ John Henry never said can’t and not a tear was shed. He left the game a hero with a crown on his head!

Be blessed, be encouraged, be the one who says, ‘Let’s just do it!’

Catch you in the Wind!

Mary G.

FlyBy Week 2025

FlyBy Week always amazes me by how different it feels every year but I thought 2025 would be simpler and have fewer surprises. Not true! The first change was early attendance. Attendees are planning further ahead- coming earlier and staying longer. Registration was very busy on Monday and by evening we already had about 70 attendees. The crowd just kept growing all week and we ended with 190 attendees representing 22 states!

The FlyBy week tradition of dinner tours with provided transportation downtown to nice restaurants shifted this year due to the opening of a large Texas Roadhouse restaurant about 300 feet from the hotel. Along with the existing Wings Etc Sports bar and IHOP restaurant across the street, there is much less incentive to go downtown for dinner. Next year we will probably discontinue the shuttle service we have been providing as there are enough attendees with four wheel vehicles to accommodate those who still want to dine downtown.

This year we didn't set up the “outdoor lounge” chairs, tables and popups until Thursday. Especially with the nice weather in the evenings, many attendees preferred hanging out in the

lot,

Last year we had good weather every day- little rain but some heat and humidity. This year was even better- it only rained once during the night and was mostly dry otherwise. Only a couple isolated scattered showers during daytime with partly cloudy and overcast skies that protected us from the sun's heat. Very pleasant riding!

How about routes? We kept the route catalog of 27 road and 11 adventure routes the same as last year except for the usual changes due to construction. I worked on these in advance but of course there were many more last minute changes due to closures during the week of FlyBy itself.

I try to ride the routes most likely to be affected early in the week, and on Monday rode the 35 Staunton Turnpike route that's been under development for a couple years. The morning route has been great all along, but even though I thought I fixed it, the afternoon route still turned out to have a gravel section. There were eight riders in the group- all survived and most of them forgave me. (Jeremy Riffle on his new Ducati Panigale was NOT pleased with the gravel section!) On Monday night I worked on the route, making the version with gravel an ADV option and creating a new fully paved part 2. All fixed!

One of the routes goes along the Ohio river on OH route 7 and had a major detour that added about 8 miles to it. I had it fixed

front parking
looking at bikes, kicking tires and telling lies.

before FlyBy, but when Scott Lane tried to ride it, he got through just as road crews were setting up yet another detour that made the route unrideable. We notified attendees to simply avoid the route for this year.

Likewise, several routes that use Sisterville ferry across the Ohio river were also taken off the route list due to the ferry not running. It's been closed all summer due to the lack of a captain to operate it but we are told it will reopen next year.

That's why we have such a large route catalog- more attendees are coming for the whole week and they can choose different routes every day with plenty to choose from in whatever style they prefer.

Will close with a some of the review comments I have received...

• The event was amazing- all the people were nice and great to hang out with in the evenings.

• The variety and number of bikes was amazing to see and can not wait until the next one.

• Huge thank you to everyone involved in making the event happen there was a huge smile on my face the entire time.

• This is one of my favorite annual events that I look forward to all year!

• I thought it was a really good mix of well organized routes and open so anyone could do whatever they wanted.

• Flyby Week is a highlight of my riding year. Thanks for organizing it!

• Norm you did an awesome job. Our group will be back again next year!

FlyBy Week will return next year at Comfort Suites Marietta, August 17-23, 2026. See you There!

BIKE SHOW REPORT

RTR SERIES CLOSES OUT WITH BLOCKBUSTER SHOWS!

Geneva-on-the-Lake and Rochester Hills drew more bikes – all makes, models, and years!

This year’s Championship Bike Show Series is on track to have over 800 bike show registrations over the course of approximately 20 shows and rallies, with over 500,000 riders and guests attending host events over 3 states!

Once again, we’d like to thank everyone for making our Bike Show Series one of the nation’s largest – with over 20 stops and over 800 bikes on display through the series! We added a number of new stops, and each of the new shows did GREAT! With several being some of the largest of the series, including our Bikes & BBQ Show held at the Shooter’s Warehouse in Northeast PA. Our Rochester Hills Michigan Bike Show drew a great crowd to our new lakefront location, and our Thunder Zone Bike in Geneva-on-the-Lake Ohio was our largest ride-in bike show ever – with over 150 bikes on display! And it’s not just the numbers that set our shows apart – it’s the great mix of bikes and the folks showing them. All makes, models, and years welcome – both riders and bikes! It’s more than just a tagline, it’s how we drive our shows!

Our relatively informal, friendly, owner / exhibitor focused shows have resonated with a lot of folks that have enjoyed the more social atmosphere of even our smaller shows. Exhibitors are encouraged to share their experience and passion for the bikes with not only those attending the shows but each other as well. Over 40% of our exhibitors have participated in multiple RtR shows, with many traveling to show their bikes outside their immediate area. Many have made connections with other exhibitors and enjoy joining them at subsequent shows. They’ve become part of the “RtR Family” and that’s a great thing! It’s the community that we celebrate – just as much as the bikes we show!

year and are already looking to continuing this success in 2026. While ReasonsToRide.com covers events from coast to coast, the RtR Bike Show Series has been focused almost exclusively on our core Midwest States. While we continue to focus on this area, we are looking to expand to the surrounding states in 2026 and introduce new shows at national rallies as a means of introducing RtR to even more riders!

We’ve already begun reserving dates for the upcoming year and considering new venues in new areas. We have also begun refining the show concepts, making more distinctions between our basic show formats – the Bike Night Shows, Bikes & BBQ’s, Regional Shows, and our Championship Invitationals. Each show offers a distinct format that both those hosting the shows and those exhibiting their bikes can expect, and the consistent format still allows for customization for each location.

Venues and event organizers have also discovered that it’s a lot easier to join the series and have Reasons to Ride out to produce the shows, then do it themselves – even though many can do it on their own and have in the past. Being part of the series not only brings in more new folks from outside the area, it also allows them to focus on hosting the guests themselves and their core business instead of the contest. We are grateful for the support of both those attending the events and those having us out to host the shows. Together we are building the community and introducing more to the concept of not just riding the bikes but customizing, restoring, and showcasing their rides! While there are always opportunities for improvement, we are extremely pleased with the response from the riding community this

If you’d like to host a show or recommend a location, please don’t hesitate to reach out and let us know. You can email us at Info@ ReasonsToRide.com As always, our shows – like the magazine and online resources – are driven by our friends and family within the riding community. We are grateful for your support and consider it our responsibility to deliver and not disappoint in all of these areas. It’s what we do – and is certainly our passion! So thanks for making this such an amazing year – and we are already looking forward to the next one!

BIKE SHOW YEARBOOKS!

We are excited to announce that we will once again be creating a “Yearbook” upon the completion of the 2025 Bike Show series. The 2024 Yearbooks were a clear hit, with only a few books still available. The feedback from exhibitors and venues was overwhelmingly positive as the yearbooks captured the spirit of the shows and help share the events with those that weren’t able to attend. For many show winners, it was a great way to commemorate not only the win but the moment they shared with family, exhibitors, and others from the tour!

It’s our hope to have the 2025 Bike Show Yearbooks in-hand in time for the holiday season and Christmas. These books will once again be hardcover with full color pictures printed on high quality paper stock. Our goal to make these keepsakes that are worthy of showcasing the bikes featured inside.

The books will contain photos and recognition of some of the amazing bikes featured throughout the year at Bike Shows ranging from the Memorial Weekend Show at Hudson Leather in Pioneer, through the end of the year shows at Rochester Hills and Iron Pony Powersports. We will also be accepting pre-orders for the books through October. If you’d like to reserve a book or find out more information on getting your bike featured, you can email us at Info@ReasonsToRide.com

We will also be accepting a limited number of photo submissions from those having attended shows this year. If you have a great picture that you believe really captures the bike or the moment, please don’t hesitate to email us a copy of the photo. If we use the picture, we will recognize you as the photographer and you might just score a RTR PHOTOGRAPHER shirt, hoodie, or other swag!

NEW TROPHIES and MEDALLIONS!

Reasons to Ride has always sought to present unique trophies and awards at the Bike Shows, and this year we are once again kicked things up even more with the introduction of custom acrylic medallions. These custom full color acrylic medallions were presented to Best of Class and Judges Choice winners at regional and even bike night shows this season. We also developed custom layered trophies for the Best of Show Awards. The medallions were be presented to the exhibitors as part of the awards ceremony, hung around the neck by our own Iron Angels! Later, though, they can be hung on racks or displays – or even mounted onto the bikes. We also brought back the popular wall plaques to go along with the medallions. We love seeing all the pictures of exhibitors displaying the wall plaques on their office, shop, and garage walls – even in their trailers! We will have some of the JUMBO Best of Show plaques as well – but do realize that the 3’ placards aren’t the easiest to take on the bikes! We will have smaller ones also available for those that prefer them.

“Since launching the Bike Show Series, we’ve always wanted to have unique trophies and awards that represented a custom look that was as unique as many of the bikes shown in the series.”

We’ve used a number of different styles over the years, even changing things up from show to show sometimes in the midst of the season. This is meant to keep things exciting and different, especially as many exhibitors join us more multiple shows – including a handful of folks that attended more than 6 shows this year!

Please let us know what you think of the trophies – and if you’ve got a display set up at home, we’d love to see it! Shoot us an email at Info@ReasonsToRide.com with pictures or just your thoughts! We’d love to hear them.

NEW PRO CLASSES!

We’re excited to announce a set of new classes for the PRO BUILDER.

One of the ongoing issues we’ve had since we started hosting Bike Shows over 20 years ago is how do you distinguish between guys building in their garage or even kitchen, hobbyists adding a few bolt-on’s, and the professionals with a full shop and craftsman on staff? And make no mistake, there are plenty of hobbyists and home builders that can give even the best of the Pro-Builders a run for their money. However, is that really fair? And if not, who decides who goes into what classes?

Which brings us to the NEW RtR Pro Classes, being introduced with the 2026 shows. We will be rolling out a lot more details to come, but suffice it to say – that we will now offer classes for those that consider themselves PRO CALIBER and those classes will usually include CASH PRIZES. As always, we will be kicking things up for those pre-registering for the shows – but the PRO CLASSES will include lots more swag, perks, and the chance to win cold hard CASH!

Sorry to say, that’s all we’re going to share at the moment. Probably should have waited, but we’re excited to get the word out. It’s going to kick things up to a whole new level!

How to Store Your Motorcycle Over the Winter

A Simple Step-by-Step Guide to Protecting Your Bike During the Off-Season

Storing your motorcycle properly during the winter months is essential to keep it in good condition and ensure a smooth ride when spring arrives. Cold temperatures, moisture, and long periods of inactivity can cause damage to your motorcycle if not addressed beforehand. This guide will walk you through the best practices for winter motorcycle storage.

1. Clean Your Motorcycle Thoroughly

Before storing your bike, wash and dry it completely. Remove dirt, grime, and road salts, which can corrode metal surfaces over time. Waxing painted and chrome surfaces provides an extra layer of protection against moisture.

You can find complete kits for detailing your bike online or at your local shop. And it pays to go that extra mile before parking your bike for the winter.

2. Change Engine Oil and Filter

Old oil can contain contaminants that may damage your engine if left sitting for months. Change the engine oil and replace the filter before storage. Run the engine for a few minutes to circulate the fresh oil.

3. Fill the Gas Tank and Add Fuel Stabilizer

Fill the gas tank to prevent moisture from accumulating and causing rust. Add a highquality fuel stabilizer to prevent the gasoline from deteriorating. Run the engine for a few minutes to ensure the stabilizer circulates through the system.

4. Care for the Battery

Batteries can lose charge and capacity during long periods of inactivity. Disconnect the battery and store it in a cool, dry place. Alternatively, use a battery tender (trickle charger) to keep it charged throughout the winter.

Replacing your battery annually is an annoying expense that can be avoided with proper care for your battery over the winter, especially if your bike is stored below freezing. Hooking up a Battery Tender can save you a lot and avoid Spring frustrations.

5. Protect the Tires

Inflate the tires to the recommended pressure to prevent flat spots. If possible, elevate your motorcycle with a stand so the tires aren’t resting on the ground. If that’s not possible, move the motorcycle slightly every few weeks to distribute the weight.

6. Lubricate Moving Parts

Apply lubricant to the chain, cables, pivot points, and any exposed metal parts to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation when you return to riding.

7. Cover and Store in a Dry Location

Store your motorcycle indoors in a dry, well-ventilated area. If you must store it outside, use a high-quality, breathable cover designed for motorcycles. Avoid using plastic tarps, as they can trap moisture and promote rust.

8. Check Insurance and Registration

Review your motorcycle insurance policy. Some insurers offer discounts for motorcycles stored seasonally. Also, make sure your registration is up to date before taking it back on the road in spring.

PRO-TIP: If you’re considering getting some work done on your motorcycle at your local shop or dealership, NOW is the time to get it done. Demand is less, and many shops offer discounts and deals on work done during the off-season.. which often include discounted or even FREE winter storage.

Following these easy steps will help keep your motorcycle in excellent condition during the winter months. When riding season returns, you’ll be ready to hit the road with confidence and minimal hassle.

Traveling with a Firearm on a Motorcycle 2A REPORT

Legal, Practical, and Safety Considerations for Responsible Riders

Traveling by motorcycle offers a sense of freedom and adventure that is unmatched by many other modes of transportation. For some riders, this journey may include the responsibility of carrying a firearm, whether for personal protection, sport, or as an integral part of their lifestyle. However, carrying a firearm on a motorcycle introduces a unique set of legal, practical, and safety challenges that require careful planning and adherence to the law. This comprehensive guide aims to help motorcycle enthusiasts understand what it takes to travel responsibly with a firearm, focusing on legal compliance, safe transportation, storage options, and best practices.

Understanding Legal Requirements: State, Provincial, and Federal Laws

The first and most critical step in traveling with a firearm on a motorcycle is to fully understand and comply with all relevant laws. Firearm regulations vary widely between countries, states, and provinces, and failure to adhere can result in severe penalties.

Carry Permits: In most jurisdictions, carrying a concealed firearm requires a valid permit. Check whether your permit is recognized in the area you are traveling through (known as reciprocity).

· Open Carry vs. Concealed Carry: Some states allow open carry, while others prohibit it. Be sure to research the specific rules for each location you plan to visit.

Transporting vs. Carrying: There is a legal distinction between transporting a firearm (unloaded, locked away) and carrying (loaded and accessible). Your method of storage on the motorcycle may determine which category you fall under. Federal Transportation Laws: In the United States, the Firearm Owners Protection Act (FOPA) provides guidelines for interstate transportation. Firearms must be unloaded and stored in a locked container, separate from ammunition. Ammunition Regulations: Some places have restrictions on the type or quantity of ammunition you can carry. Always verify these laws for each jurisdiction.

Safe Storage and Transportation

Choosing an Appropriate Storage Solution

Unlike cars, motorcycles have limited storage space and exposure to the elements. Proper storage is essential for legal compliance, safety, and convenience.

Theft Prevention / Lockable Cases: Invest in a high-quality, lockable hard case designed for firearms. It should be weatherproof, tamper-resistant, and securely affixed to your motorcycle, such as in saddlebags, panniers, or a top box. Motorcycles, especially those parked outdoors, are tempting targets for thieves.

· Disassembly: Consider transporting the firearm disassembled, with parts stored in separate compartments. This may be a legal requirement for some jurisdictions and adds a layer of security. Separate Ammunition: Store ammunition in a separate, locked container, ideally in a different compartment from the firearm.

· Concealment vs. Accessibility: Balance the need for concealment with accessibility. The firearm should not be visible to passersby, but if you are legally carrying for self-defense, consider an appropriate holster that allows for safe, quick access.

Physical Security

Motorcycles are more vulnerable to theft than cars. To minimize risk: Park in secure, well-lit areas whenever possible.

· Consider adding alarms or GPS tracking devices to your motorcycle.

· Never leave your firearm unattended or unsecured on your motorcycle.

Weather and Environmental Factors

Firearms are sensitive to moisture, dust, and temperature extremes.

· Choose weatherproof containers and regularly inspect seals and locks.

· Clean and maintain your firearm more frequently if traveling through wet or dusty conditions.

Riding Gear and Clothing

If you are carrying on your person, select riding gear that supports safe and comfortable firearm carry.

· Concealed Carry Apparel: Some companies manufacture motorcycle jackets and vests with built-in holsters.

· Holsters: Choose a holster that secures the firearm during rapid movement or impacts. Shoulder holsters, waistband holsters, and tank bag holsters are popular options, but each has pros and cons regarding accessibility and comfort.

Safety Best Practices

Interacting with Law Enforcement

Always be prepared to communicate respectfully and transparently with law enforcement.

· Carry all documentation pertaining to your firearm and permits. Inform officers of the presence of a firearm if stopped, and follow their instructions carefully.

Be aware of “duty to inform” laws, which may require immediate disclosure of firearms during traffic stops.

Training and Familiarity

Never underestimate the importance of training. Responsible firearm owners should:

Be proficient in safe handling, operation, and maintenance of their firearm.

Practice drawing and holstering with the motorcycle gear they will use.

Understand emergency procedures in case of accidental discharge or malfunction.

Travel Planning

Route planning is essential when traveling with a firearm.

· Map out your route and research firearm laws for every jurisdiction along the way.

· Be flexible to adjust plans if unexpected legal restrictions arise. Plan overnight stops in areas where secure storage is available.

Insurance Considerations

Some insurance policies cover firearms during travel, while others exclude them. Review your policy and consider supplemental insurance for high-value items.

RECIPES

Cheesy Spaghetti with Ground Beef and Velveeta Marinara Sauce

Ingredients:

• 12 oz spaghetti

• 1 lb ground beef

• 1 jar (24 oz) marinara sauce

• 8 oz Velveeta cheese, cubed

• 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

• ½ tsp garlic powder

• ½ tsp onion powder

• 1 tsp Italian seasoning

• ¼ tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

• Salt and pepper, to taste

• 1 tbsp olive oil

• Chopped parsley or basil, for garnish (optional)

Directions:

1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the spaghetti until just al dente, then drain and set aside.

2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until fully browned, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain off any extra grease.

3. Season the cooked beef with garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes if you like heat, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir everything together.

4. Pour in the marinara sauce and mix well. Let it simmer on low for about 5 to 7 minutes so all the flavors can blend together.

5. Add the cubed Velveeta to the skillet and stir gently until it melts into the sauce, turning everything thick and creamy.

6. Add the drained spaghetti right into the skillet and toss to coat every strand in that cheesy beef marinara goodness.

7. Sprinkle mozzarella over the top, then cover the pan and let it sit for 2 to 3 minutes until the cheese melts. For a golden top, you can pop it under the broiler for a few minutes.

Smothered Pork Chops with Potatoes in Gravy!

Ingredients:

• 6 pork chops (bone-in or boneless, about 1-inch thick)

• 4 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks

• 1 green bell pepper, diced (optional for added flavor)

• 1 small onion, chopped

• 3 tablespoons olive oil or butter

• 1 teaspoon garlic powder

• 1 teaspoon onion powder

• 1 teaspoon paprika

• Salt and pepper, to taste

• 1 teaspoon dried parsley (for garnish)

• 2 cups chicken broth

• 1 can cream of mushroom or cream of chicken soup (10.5 oz)

• 2 tablespoons flour (optional, for thickening)

• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions:

• Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

• Season the pork chops with garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.

• Sear the pork chops in a skillet with oil over medium-high heat until golden brown (2–3 minutes per side). Set aside.

• In the same skillet, sauté onions and bell pepper until tender. Add flour and cook for 1 minute.

• Stir in the chicken broth, soup, and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer for a couple of minutes to make the gravy.

• In a large baking dish, arrange the potatoes in the bottom. Pour a bit of gravy over them.

• Place seared pork chops on top of the potatoes, then pour the remaining gravy all over everything.

• Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Uncover and bake for an additional 15–20 minutes, or until the pork and potatoes are forktender and the top is slightly browned.
