Inglewood residents to get smoke alarms

American Red Cross

Western Los Angeles Chapter, the City of Inglewood, UCLA Health, U.S. VETS and Inglewood Unified School District are offering free smoke alarm installations for Inglewood residents in need during a Sound the Alarm home fire safety event on April 29.

“ A working smoke alarm can be the difference between survival and tragedy when a home fire strikes,” said Sean Inoue, Executive Director, American Red Cross Western Los Angeles Chapter. “That’s why the Red Cross is teaming up with local partners to help ensure Inglewood residents, especially those most vulnerable, have these lifesaving devices.”

Residents who need assistance can register at redcross. org/LAhomefire for a 20-minute home fire safety visit between 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 29. Volunteers will also share information on the causes of home fires, how to prevent

them, what to do if a fire starts and how to create an escape plan.

Volunteers needed: Those who want to give back in Inglewood can sign up at redcross. org/LAhomefire to volunteer during the April 29 Sound the Alarm event. No prior experience is needed — training will be provided for installing smoke alarms and sharing fire safety information.

Can’t join the event? You can also help by donating to the Red Cross at redcross.org/ LAhomefire to help people prepare for, respond to and recover from home fires.

Inglewood even is part of a National Campaign

Local Sound the Alarm events like this one in Inglewood are a critical part of the national Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, which has helped save at least 1,664 lives since launching in October 2014. Locally, during this time, the Red Cross in Los Angeles and local partners have installed more than 54,700 free smoke alarms and made more than 18, 200 households safer time in Los Angeles County.

Singer, actor, activist, and cultural icon Harry Belafonte has passed at the age of 96. Belafonte was a striking force in the middle of the Civil Rights

Movement during the 1960s. However, his activism for social and racial justice was not limited to a certain time period. The star of "Carmen Jones"

and "Buck and the Preacher," Belafonte was also a giant on the big screen. The song, "Day-O" is perhaps Belafonte's most memorable song.

The campus has become a sustainability leader in higher education for innovations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across campus with new rooftop solar panel installations and other energy-sav-

ing measures. Just last month, the university earned STARS Gold under the AASHE sustainability ranking system. No other campus in the CSU system has progressed from Bronze through Gold in a

shorter time.

Each year, the Office of Sustainability hosts the Earth Day Festival to highlight the university’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and to supporting environ-

mental justice. Communities of color are inordinately burdened by the effects of climate change. Sustainability is one of CSUDH’s core values and one of the critical ways we support our South Bay neighbors.

Unpacking Sexual Health: Demanding Change for Our Communities

As Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Awareness Month draws to a close, it’s the perfect time to get real about how STIs impact our communities. As Black women, mothers, and health advocates, we have a stake in this matter, but the truth is that we’re often left out of the conversation, and our experiences are overlooked. We need to be listened to and respected, which starts with raising awareness and taking action.

WE’VE seen firsthand the stigma and shame associated with STIs, and the lack of access to quality health care makes matters worse. Unfortunately, STI rates among Black women and youth are alarmingly high, accounting for almost half of the 20 million new cases yearly. In 2021 alone, there were 2.5 million reported cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis in the United States, disproportionately affecting Black women and youth aged 15-24.

The stakes have always been high for our youth regardless of race, gender, or socioeconomic status, and when it comes to STIs, there’s no difference. Left undiagnosed or untreated, STIs can cause severe long-term health consequences, including infertility and a heightened risk for HIV. Recent data in California has shown a sharp increase in congenital syphilis among young Black women, which, if pregnant, could lead to premature delivery, low birth weight, and even infant death. For our communities to thrive, we must dismantle the systemic inequities that allow these

health disparities to persist; this includes changes in our education, communication, health systems, and policies.

Comprehensive sex education that provides physical and emotional wellness strategies is essential for our health and well-being. We need access to accurate information and health systems tailored to the needs and experiences of those this issue most affects.

To be effective, comprehensive sexual health education must be evidence-based, trauma-informed, culturally competent, and inclusive. Moreover, providing comprehensive sexual health education is not just about preventing STIs. It's about promoting healthy relationships, building self-esteem and confidence, and fostering respect for oneself and others. These values can benefit young people throughout their lives beyond just their sexual health.

But it isn’t just about education- we must also break down communication barriers. Discussing sexual health can be uncomfortable or taboo in many communities. But it's precisely because of this discomfort that we need to create safe spaces for open and honest conversations where people feel seen and heard talking about their sexual health needs and concerns.

Addressing inequitable health outcomes for diverse communities throughout California, especially among our youth, will also require a collaborative approach to health care. Local health systems, from community health centers to private practices, would do well to listen to the challenges of our youth by meeting them where they are and expanding culturally sensitive STI testing, screening, and treatment through non-judgmental, person-centered care administered with dignity and respect.

Additionally, we must continue to demand policies like Senator Caroline Menjivar's Youth Health Equity + Safety (YHES) Act, which prioritizes

the health and well-being of our communities. The YHES Act seeks to expand access to free internal and external condoms in California high schools. So young people who often face barriers to accessing sexual health services will have greater access to resources that can help protect them.

Just as we came together to increase testing to begin turning the tide in the battle against STIs, it is vital that as vanguards of sexual health advocacy and reproductive justice, we stand together to make a difference in the lives of our communities. Let's keep fighting to improve the lives of all people and demand the change we need to see.

LA County Dept. of Health Services will continue to provide abortions

The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services will continue to provide medication abortions to patients in need, including those performed using mifepristone when medically appropriate.

LA Health Services will continue to provide access to the full range of sexual and reproductive health care which includes medication abortion. This access is fundamental to the health and wellbeing of in-

dividuals, families, and communities.

LA Health Services has a sufficient supply of mifepristone, one of two drugs commonly prescribed for medication abortion. If the court system prevents further marketing and distribution of that drug, well-established practice and extensive scientific evidence support the use of a second FDA approved drug, misoprostol, both alone and in combination for medication abortion.

Abortion is legal in California. The Department of Health Services remains committed to ensuring that

all residents, and in this case pregnant people, have access to compassionate care. Safe and confidential abortion care remains available to pregnant people of any age, regardless of immigration status, or insurance coverage. LA Health Services patients can find more information on our Abortion services, including safe and confidential access to mifepristone at: LA Heath Services_Family Planning

Los Angeles County’s Safe Haven Abortion Project website has a guide to resources in LA County for anyone who needs abortion care, family planning

care, or related services.

You can find the guide at: Abortion Safe Haven. Or you

can talk to your own doctor or nurse and get information about your options.

Carson students receive gift cards

The City of Carson celebrated 24 winners, grades 3-8, amongst City staff, the Public Relations Commission, contest judges, family and friends, school principals, coordinators, and teachers, as well as the City Council on Thursday, April 20th, at the Carson Event Center. There were around 170 attendees.

THIS essay-writing contest was started in 1996 by the late Councilmember Mary Anne O’Neal to foster community pride among our youth. It is the original and first civic contest of its kind in our City.

Every year, Carson students submit entries that demonstrate why Carson is a great place to live, work, and play. The winners of this contest

exemplified excellence, creativity, and civic pride through their essays. Each winner received a certificate, medal, and gift card. The honorable mention awardees received $100; the 3rd place winners received $150; the 2nd place winners received $175; and the 1st place winners received $200.

The program included a poem reading, acknowledgement and rec-

ognition of the judges and participating schools, special remarks by the City Council, a sit-down dinner, and the announcement of the winners.

“I am very proud of our Carson schools and students. Congratulations to the 24 winners. We look forward to a continued partnership with the schools to raise intelligent and civic-minded individuals,” said Mayor Davis-Holmes.

It’s Always the Guns

Gun violence takes a relentless toll in our nation. Every day more than 300 people are killed or injured by guns in the United States, and most of their stories never make the news at all. But this was yet another week when multiple gun tragedies made national headlines.

ONE of those tragedies started out as a celebration: Alexis Dowdell’s sweet 16 birthday party at a dance studio in Dadeville, Alabama on April 15. She and her family had been planning the party for months, and the dance floor was filled with young people and a DJ when gunfire broke out. More than thirty people were injured and four were killed, including Alexis’s older brother, 18-year-old Philstavious “Phil” Dowdell.

Alexis remembered Phil pushing her to the ground to protect her in the chaos, but the next time she saw him he was lying in a pool of blood. She told an interviewer, “I got on my knees and he was laying face down.

And that’s when I grabbed him. I turned him over, I was holding him. . . I was trying to be strong instead of panicking. And so I said, ‘You’re going to be all right, you’re a fighter, you’re strong.” But Phil, a high school senior and star athlete who had a football scholarship to Jacksonville State University, was gone—along with another 17-year-old Dadeville High senior and two more young guests. Many of those injured remain hospitalized in serious condition.

The nonprofit Gun Violence Archive, which keeps track of mass shootings in the U.S. where four or more victims are killed or injured

by guns, notes that there have been more than 165 mass shootings so far in 2023— more than one a day. On April 15 there were seven mass shootings, the most in a single day so far this year.

So, the devastating mass injuries and deaths at a birthday party that night were heartbreaking, but they were not unusual for America. But those stories about the “everyday” trauma and tragedy of mass shootings were also joined this week by the latest headlines about a series of “mistake” shootings.

On April 13 in Kansas City, Missouri, 16-year-old honors student and musician Ralph Yarl was shot in the head and arm after mistakenly ringing the wrong doorbell while trying to pick up his younger brothers from a friend’s home. The man who shot him said that when the 5’8”, 140-lb teenager came to his door, he

looked out and saw a 6-foottall Black man and felt “scared to death.” Instead of asking any questions he immediately shot Ralph through the locked glass storm door. Two days later in Hebron, New York, 20-year-old Kaylin Gillis was shot and killed after she and a group of friends mistakenly drove into the wrong home’s driveway.

The young people, who were in a rural area with no cell phone service, had already realized their mistake and were trying to leave when the homeowner started firing on them, hitting Kaylin inside the car where she was sitting in the passenger seat. And on April 18 in Elgin, Texas, two elite high school cheerleaders returning from practice were shot after one of them mistakenly opened the door to the wrong car in an H-E-B grocery store parking lot.

Eighteen-year-old Payton

Washington, who was planning to attend Baylor University in the fall on an acrobatic and tumbling scholarship and who had already overcome physical challenges after being born with only one lung, was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition with injuries to her spleen and other organs.

All of these only-in-America atrocities took place the very same week that many Republican politicians were attending the National Rifle Association’s annual convention to pledge their allegiance to the gun lobby.

Reuters Pictures shared a series of photos from the convention of children as young as six and seven holding guns whose triggers barely fit their small hands as they pointed them at the camera. Shannon Watts, the founder of Moms Demand Action, said afterwards in an interview, “Responsible gun owners and par-

ents would not allow a child to put their finger on a firearm’s trigger while pointing it at other people—even if they’re props . . . It’s more clear than ever that the NRA’s goal was never to teach children about responsible gun handling but to market guns and gun extremism to a new generation.”

But there is a large majority of Americans who favor common sense gun safety laws, who did not vote to put the NRA in charge of our national security, who are not grooming our own children and grandchildren to become gun extremists, and who do not want our children and grandchildren to be shot or killed because they attended a birthday party, recognized the wrong car in a parking lot, or accidentally drove to the wrong address. In our nation with more guns than people, we know we need to do something about the guns.

‘Old’ man LeBron James shows up young Grizzlies

The Lakers superstar is leading the way for Los Angeles in first round playoff series

LOS ANGELES

(Compton Bulletin)The "old" man is having his say. LeBron James scored the tying basket in regulation with less than a second left and helped the Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Memphis Grizzlies 117-111in overtime.

THE win gives the Lakers a 3-1 advantage in this best-of-seven series. James finished the game with 22 points and 20 rebounds at Crypto.com Arena. It was a different scenario for the Lakers and Grizzlies in Game 4 than Game 3, but the same results. The Lakers wound up getting the "W."

The Grizzlies were run out of Crypto.com Arena in Game 3. Midway through Game 4, the Grizzlies found themselves playing demoralized and looking like they had just been handed the house keys to go home.

This was not supposed to be a repeat of Game 3, but Game 4 turned in favor of the Lakers late in the first quarter and second period. Memphis didn’t think the series would go like this. The first-round Western Conference series was not supposed to be this hard.

The Lakers hammered the No. 2 seeded Grizzlies with a scoring blitz in the first quarter of Game 3 and rode that wave all the way to a 111-101 win at Crypto.com Arena.

After that victory, the Lakers held a 2-1 series lead. Win Game 4, and the Lakers would have Memphis in a near-impossible scenario to win the series. That meant coming all the way back from a 3-1 deficit. Well, that's a reality now for the young Grizzlies.

It’s crazy to think that the Lakers, a team that to play its way into the postseason in the first place, would just flick the young and restless Grizzlies to

the brink of getting dismissed out of the playoffs early. That’s where we were Monday night.

James is trying to inch the

Lakers to the second round of the playoffs. James represents the old guard in the NBA. A four-time NBA champion,

James and the Lakers seemed to be playing better now in the postseason than they did during the regular season.

But with the playoffs, you have to have a watch-and-see approach. By this time next week, we’ll know if the Lakers have advanced to the next round or were eventually sent home on an early vacation. In both Game 1 and Game 3, James and the Lakers looked like world-beaters.

But on the other side of the coin, Morant and the Grizzlies are the young upstarts looking to knock out the old dragon. The difference between the Lakers and the Grizzlies is experience, which is why Los Angeles should win this series.

While Morant is the next NBA superstar in waiting, Memphis is basically a youth-laden team that does a lot of chirping. Yes, the Grizzlies are a talented and athletic bunch, but they talk too much. During the season, the Grizzlies were able to back up a lot of the trash talk they’ve been known to dish out on the basketball court.

All those wolf tickets the Grizzlies have been trying to sell have been sent back for a refund by the purple and gold. Trash talk doesn’t mean squat to veterans like James and Anthony Davis. Before Game 4 during his pregame press conference, Lakers coach Darvin Ham talked about keeping his guys focused on the task at hand and not yielding to the “distractions.”

So, what happened in Game 4? The Lakers raced out to a double-digit lead in the second quarter. Memphis closed the gap to two points by the time halftime rolled around. Ok. Now, we have a ballgame. By the end of the second period, the Lakers suddenly got cold feet, which would explain why the Grizzlies were able to close on them late in the quarter.

The game would remain close all the way until the final seconds ticked off the clock in overtime. The Lakers survived this one, and just need to win one more game to close out the series.

Georgia is once again at the center of voting rights disputes

Organizations challenge portion of anti-voter law that blocks Georgians from providing food and water to voters waiting in long lines at poll

ATLANTA — Voting rights organizations filed an emergency preliminary injunction motion to lift part of the restriction in Georgia’s anti-voter law, S.B. 202, that blocks Georgians from providing food and water to voters waiting in long lines at polls.

THE motion was filed as part of ongoing litigation AME vs. Kemp, which challenges S.B. 202 for unconstitutionally creating barriers to voting that diminish the voices of communities of color, women and people with disabilities. If granted, the preliminary injunction would allow volunteers to provide voters with food and water within 150 feet of a polling place.

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), the Legal Defense Fund (LDF), American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the ACLU of Georgia, and the law firms WilmerHale and Davis Wright Tremaine LLP (DWT) filed the preliminary injunction motion. Plaintiffs are the Sixth District of the American Methodist Epis-

copal Church (AME), Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Georgia ADAPT, and the Georgia Advocacy Office, represented by LDF, ACLU Ga, ACLU and Wilmer Hale, as well as the Georgia Muslim Voter Project, Women Watch Afrika, Latino Community Fund of Georgia and The Arc of the United States, represented by SPLC and DWT.

“The cruel barriers to voting enacted in S.B. 202 target both the basic needs and basic rights of Georgians. There can be no reason for denying food or water to people in long polling lines, other than trying to prevent them from exercising their freedom to vote,” said Poy Winichakul, senior staff attorney for voting rights with SPLC. “These barriers to voting must be removed so all Georgians can have a voice to advocate for their communities in

the crucial 2024 elections.”

“Our clients used to be able to offer a bottle of water or a snack to voters waiting in long lines at the polls,” said Rahul Garabadu, senior voting rights staff attorney at the ACLU of Georgia. “SB202 largely banned these activities, adding to the burdens that many voters, including voters of color and voters with disabilities, face when casting a ballot. Last year, the Court found that there were serious constitutional concerns with portions of the ban on line relief. We’re now asking the Court to strike down the unlawful provisions of the ban so that our clients can provide crucial support to voters across our state.”

“This restriction on providing food and water to voters waiting in long lines is a brazen attempt to make voting more difficult in Georgia. It stifles our

clients’ First Amendment right to express, through action, the important message that voting is vital, and that Georgians, particularly Black Georgians and Georgians of color, should persist through obstacles laid in their path as they have throughout the state’s history,” said Davin Rosborough, senior staff attorney with the ACLU’s Voting Rights Project.

“S.B. 202’s provisions restricting line relief activities are cruel and discriminatory,” said Rhonda Briggins, Chair, Strategic Partnerships Taskforce for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. “These restrictions prevent Deltas from providing necessities like food and water to voters experiencing long lines, which impact significant numbers of Black Georgia voters. We are hopeful the Court will block the unlawful restrictions it has already recognized may be unlawful so that we can resume some of our line relief efforts for upcoming elections.”

“Georgia’s cruel line-relief ban makes it harder for Black voters to fully participate in elections,” said John Cusick, assistant counsel at LDF. “The Court has already found constitutional concerns with certain aspects of the line-relief ban. We’re asking the Court to block those provisions in up-

coming elections so that the organizations we represent and other groups throughout Georgia can resume modest line-relief efforts like passing out food and water to Georgia voters who continue to stand in unacceptably long lines.”

“S.B. 202’s line relief ban imposes unjustifiable and unconstitutional burdens on voters at the polls,” said George P. Varghese, a partner at WilmerHale. “We are filing this motion to ensure that our clients’ fundamental right to vote, and their right to support fellow Georgians who vote, are not compromised—including in the upcoming 2024 elections.”

“Instead of making it easier for folks to cast a ballot in sweltering heat or blistering cold, S.B. 202 makes it a crime for a neighbor to offer these voters a bottle of water or warm cup of coffee,” said Adam S. Sieff, counsel at Davis Wright Tremaine. “That’s not only inhumane, it’s also a clear violation of the First Amendment and these citizens’ rights as voters. The Court has already found that aspects of S.B. 202’s line relief ban raises serious constitutional problems, and we’re filing this motion to ensure that these fundamental rights are respected in future elections, including in 2024.”

If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 800-280-2832 for information regarding the trustee's sale or visit this internet website http://www.qualityloan. com, using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-22-946490AB. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section

2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an "eligible tenant buyer," you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an "eligible bidder," you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase.

First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call 800-280-2832, or visit this internet website http://www.qualityloan.com, using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-22-946490-AB to find the date on which the trustee's sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee's sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee's sale. If you think you may qualify as an "eligible tenant buyer" or "eligible bidder," you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. NOTICE TO PROSPECTIVE OWNEROCCUPANT: Any prospective owneroccupant as defined in Section 2924m of the California Civil Code who is the last and highest bidder at the trustee's sale shall provide the required affidavit or declaration of eligibility to the auctioneer at the trustee's sale or shall have it delivered to QUALITY LOAN SERVICE CORPORATION by 5 p.m. on the next business day following the trustee's sale at the address set forth in the below signature block. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the property address or other common designation, if any, shown herein. If no street address or other common designation is shown, directions to the location of the property may be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. If the sale is set aside for any reason, including if the Trustee is unable to convey title, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the monies paid to the Trustee. This shall be the Purchaser's sole and exclusive remedy. The purchaser shall have no further recourse against the Trustor, the Trustee, the Beneficiary, the Beneficiary's Agent, or the Beneficiary's Attorney. If you have previously been discharged through bankruptcy, you may have been released of personal liability for this loan in which case this letter is intended to exercise the note holders right's against the real property only.

The women of ‘1776’ re-ignite moments leading up to the Declaration of Independence

(News4usonline) - The nation’s Founding Fathers were white men.

Old white men. The cast of “1776” flips this narrative and comes through with all women telling the story of our forefathers. I know what you’re thinking.

THIS is probably another version of “Hamilton,” a theater phenom that bounds hip-hop with a cast made up largely of people of color who gives audiences another version of representation of how America came into being.

I’m sorry to bust your bubble, but “1776” is a much different show than the offering of “Hamilton.” While “1776” is a musical, this theatrical

production is not a remix of “Hamilton.” All that be-bopping that has made “Hamilton” a once-in-a-generation production should not be confused with the nuanced and deliberate delivery of “1776.”

If anything, “Hamilton borrows a page or two from the original “1776,” which made its stage debut back in 1969. This more up-to-date version of “1776” goes the way of “Hamilton by bringing a much diverse cast to its show.

Making this showcase even more profound is the fact that “1776’ has an all-female cast.

Whereas “Hamilton'' focuses more or less on the immigrant story of Alexander Hamilton, “1776” concentrates on the events leading up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. All the major players are in the room.

John Adans (a relentless Gisela Adisa) is all over the place. John Hancock (played by the dominating presence of

Oneika Phillips), who serves as the president of the Continental Congress, lays the law down as the adult in the room. Benjamin Franklin, played by a show-stopping Liz Mikel, seems to have humorous one-liners attached to her hip pocket.

We see Thomas Jefferson (Nancy Anderson) more focused on being a hapless romantic. In “Hamilton,” Jefferson is more swashbuckler and flamboyant than anything that he does in “1776.” So let’s get to the gist of “1776.

The first half of the two hour and 45-minute performance is more concentrated on dialogue rather than singing. The show opens up a lot more in the second half when singing dominates the platform.

Perhaps the most moving song of the whole production comes from Connor Lyon, who plays the role of Martha Jefferson. Lyon sounds like an absolute angel as she nails the song in one big lyrical gush in

the second half of the performance. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Probably one of the more telling fixtures of this musical comes right at the beginning of the performance when Adisa measuredly walks on stage and glances at this giant mural of the Founding Fathers. The contrast couldn’t be more significant. And stunning.

The portrait of the Founding Fathers is one of older men. All white, mind you. Then there is Asida, a Black woman who walks on stage with a purpose and attitude.

For sure, if John Adams had Asida’s swag, he’d have a lot more going on.

Better yet, he would have signed off on the Declaration of Independence himself instead of letting Jefferson, a slave owner, command ownership of it. All this talk about freedom and liberty didn’t rub off too much on the owners of slaves like Jefferson and

George Washington.

As Adams, Asida is rather unnerving and kind of gets under your skin. She is very good at commanding the stage and brings a lot of depth to her role. But the actor who overshadows Asida is Phillips.

As Hancock, Phillips is a powerful presence on the stage without having to say too much. Her voice is both mommanding and authoritative as she rules the Continental Congress with an iron fist as Hancock. Though her role is somewhere in the midrange, Phillips has lead stardom written all over her. It’s just a matter of time before that is born into fruition.

The same might be said of Mikel. MIkel brings a refreshing air to Franklin. She’s quick-witted, has a deadpan delivery over her lines, and owns the space she walks in. It’s not just two or three people that make “1776” a wonderful production. It’s the entire cast.
