Compton College student Skyy Sorrell has discovered her purpose; she is a natural people connector.
“My journey in life has shown me that what feels good to me is helping people,” she said. “Wherever I am, if I see someone that I think might benefit from a connection to a resource, I provide contact information to an organization or person that can help. I enjoy making sure people are taken care of and are receiving resources that are available to help them.”
A Compton native and single mother, Sorrell is on track to graduate with an associate degree from Compton College in fall 2024 and plans to transfer to California State University, Dominguez Hills to major in business administration and psychology.
In the future, she sees herself pursuing a career as either a college counselor or owning a counseling practice to help foster and at-risk youth, as well as those whose families have experienced incarceration.

The Aquarium of the Pacific has announced the recipients of its new Community, Equity, Learning, and Persistence (CELP) Scholar Program.
FIFTEEN students studying fields related to the ocean at Southern California higher education institutions have been awarded $10,000 each to support their academic pursuits. The CELP Scholar Program seeks to broaden participation in marine sciences, help more students find their own community in STEM, and support students’ persistence in the field.
With this program, the Aquarium looks to bring a greater variety of lived experiences to the challenge of ensuring a healthy and sustainable ocean for everyone.
“All of us have a role to play in addressing climate change and the degradation of our ocean. But not everyone may have the same access. The goal of this program is to open the door to as many environmental stewards, advocates, allies, and young scientists as possible,” said Dr. Peter Kareiva, Aquarium of the Pacific president and Carson, CA -- California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) and Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) launched a multipronged program focused on transportation equity for the university and its surrounding communities based on the idea of “Mobility for All.”

The 2024 CELP cohort includes two students from community colleges, eight undergraduates from four-year programs, three master’s degree students, and two Ph.D. students representing nine different schools in Southern California. Eighty percent of the recipients are the first in their family to attend college.
The scholars can participate in a wide range of engagement opportunities curated by the Aquarium. Individuals receive one-on-one engagement with Aquarium staff to explore career paths and support their person-
al growth.
As a group, CELP scholars can participate in community building events and development sessions. They join a growing community of peers in marine-related fields of study who can support, uplift, and learn from each other.
“I feel great comfort knowing that I’ll be in a program that will support me...to accomplish my goals of giving back to my community. Over the next year of the program, I’m looking forward to being in a cohort of like-minded students who have similar goals and interests. I’m excited to be motivated and in-
spired by the successes of my peers in this program,” said Willow Jackson, a 2024 CELP Scholar.
Award recipient selection was informed by a committee of Aquarium staff, scholar alumni, and members of the community. You can hear from this year’s scholars by watching the video on the Aquarium’s website at https://pacific.to/3UL9CS3.
Those interested in applying for the second year of the CELP Scholar Program can visit the Aquarium’s website in the fall/ winter 2024. For additional information about eligibility and the application process, please

The CELP Scholar Program is supported by contributions. The public is invited to make a donation at pacific.to/celpfund. Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, gifts will be matched up to $10,000.
Several students from nearby Cal State University, Long Beach, have been named recipients. Their names are:
Carlisle Zasio is a fourthyear undergraduate student at California State University, Long Beach studying marine biology. Zasio is passionate about making science education more accessible to learners from all walks of life.
Frank Nicolas-Juan is a fourth-year undergraduate at California State University, Long Beach studying marine biology. Nicolas-Juan looks forward to learning more about the science and staff members behind the Aquarium’s sunflower star conservation efforts and learning how to communicate conservation messages to the public.
Ivanna Arrizon Elizarraras is a graduate student at California State University, Long Beach pursuing a master’s in biology. Her thesis studies the effect of temperature on purple urchin larval development to better understand how distribution may be impacted by climate change.

The initial phase of the program will establish the Center for Resilient, Equitable, and Sustainable Transportation (CREST) at CSUDH, made possible by a $1.2 million grant from Toyota. Housed within CSUDH’s Center for Innovation in STEM Education, CREST will engage faculty and students in research, curricula, and paid internships to find solutions to the myriad mobility challenges faced by members of the univer-
sity and wider community.
“Toyota believes that when people are free to move, any-
thing is possible,” said Tom Stricker, group vice president, Toyota Sustainability & Regula-
tory Affairs. “CREST aligns perfectly with Toyota’s ‘Mobility for All’ vision, which aims to leave ‘no one behind’ by providing people with accessible, low, and zero emission mobility solutions to meet their diverse needs.”
CSUDH students, many of whom are low-income, minority, or first-generation, face numerous barriers to education—one of which is inadequate transportation. More than 95 percent of CSUDH students commute to campus, and a needs assessment conducted in communities around the university revealed transportation

(StatePoint) The health care system can feel uncoordinated and costly. One in 10 U.S. adults ration medication because they can’t afford their prescriptions, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In fact, the more a patient must pay at the counter, the more likely they are to abandon their treatment. Other Americans simply lack convenient access to primary care providers and pharmacies, and go undertreated as a result.
PHARMACY services companies exist to fill these gaps in care. Because these companies sit in the middle of the health care delivery system, they have the unique ability to spot and solve problems across the supply chain to drive affordability and deliver improved clinical outcomes.
“Every day at Express Scripts, we use our clinical expertise and patient-centered programs to help the more than 100 million Americans we serve keep their health on track,” says Adam Kautzner, president of Express Scripts, a leading pharmacy services company.
Before filling your next prescription, check out these insights from Express Scripts:
• Check your coverage: At a time of rising drug costs and access barriers, some pharmacy services companies are helping people take their medications as prescribed. Express Scripts, for example, was the first in the industry to cap the out-ofpocket costs of insulin and other diabetic treatments,
saving people more than $45 million in two years.
“A prescription drug doesn’t work if it’s priced out of reach,” says Kautzner. “Reducing out-of-pocket costs is the single best thing we can do to improve the health of people we serve.”
• Tools to stay adherent: Half of all treatments fail because people don’t take medication as prescribed and nearly one-quarter of hospitalizations are due to medication non-adherence, according to the American Hospital Association. Further, chronic conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease have been on the rise for more than two decades – today, 60% of U.S. adults have at least one chronic condition. One of the biggest – and costliest –challenges with managing the rise of chronic conditions is ensuring patients get on and stay on the medicines they need.
Express Scripts is helping patients better understand and manage their conditions through comprehensive disease management, including condition-specific coaching, tracking medication adherence, and digital tools.
“By taking medications as directed and working with
their pharmacist, patients stay healthier longer and spend less on health care, requiring fewer emergency room visits, hospitalizations and medical tests,” says Stephanie Smith Cooney, PharmD, senior director of independent pharmacy affairs at Express Scripts.
• Understand your pharmacy benefits: Prescription drug coverage is the most frequently utilized benefit that employers and health plans offer. On average, a pharmacy benefit is used approximately 11 times a year. Unfortunately, pharmacy care benefits, like all healthcare benefits, can be confusing. That’s why pharmacy services companies are taking steps to give patients greater clarity. Starting this year, prescriptions from Express Scripts include an easy-to-understand digital pharmacy benefits statement with drug price information, out-of-pocket costs and the value delivered.
• Pharmacy access: Pharmacists often fill care gaps in their communities, particularly where there are shortages of physicians, such as in rural areas. One in five Americans live in rural areas, yet less than 10% of

Longtime educator
Dr. Claudio Toledo is known across Lynwood Unified for his positive impact on students, colleagues and the District community –a dedication that has earned him recognition as the 2024 District Teacher of the Year, announced during the Board of Education meeting on April 25.
TOLEDO – an educator at Lynwood Unified for over 20 years – received a standing ovation and an enthusiastic round of applause
from the audience, which included friends, family and colleagues, including Teachers of the Year from across District schools.
“This has been the most extraordinary professional experience of my life since being allowed to put into practice one of my lifelong callings of being a teacher,” Toledo said. “I am honored and am grateful for the opportunity to positively impact the lives of my students – the most amazing blessing in my life – and to collaborate with dedicated colleagues who share my passion for education.”
Toledo started his journey with Lynwood Unified in 1999 as a secondary En-
glish teacher, where he said his passion for enriching young minds ignited. After serving as an assistant principal for six years, he answered his calling to the classroom and began a new chapter as a teacher at Vista High School, a 2024 California Model Continuation High School.
Colleagues of Toledo laud his passion for personally connecting with every student, providing individualized support, and ensuring their academic and social-emotional success.
“I have had the privilege of observing Dr. Toledo in action. I have seen his rare gift for fostering a sense of belonging and empower-

Ensuring equitable access to affordable, quality pharmacy care and health services will not only improve health, but it will also help individuals, families and communities thrive.

CREST will serve as an information hub, offering resources for accessible and affordable transportation options for CSUDH students, faculty, and staff. CREST will expand its reach to the City of Carson and other target geographic areas over the course of five years.
“CREST will offer students and local residents mobility options that are flexible, affordable, reliable, and accessible,” said Kamal Hamdan, executive director for the CSUDH Center for Innovation in STEM Education. “This is a transformational project focused on improving quality of life and creating lasting change in the communities we serve.”
Providing students with sustainable and accessible transportation is another key element of the program. KINTO, Toyota’s carsharing program, will supply CSUDH with 20 hybrid and/or battery electric vehicles starting in Fall 2024 to increase students’ access to convenient vehicle renting at a highly discounted rate. With improved transportation options, students could have more time to better focus on their academic goals, have easier access to job opportunities, and be able to take full advantage of living in Greater Los Angeles. To accommodate the new vehicle fleet and offer improved charging capabilities on campus, CSUDH is also partnering with Southern California Edison to install Level 2 electric charging stations on campus in the near future.
“KINTO mobility solution is designed to increase mobility through the EV-based ridesharing program,” said Kevin McKeever, general manager, KINTO & Fleet Management. “With 34 locations already across California, we’re excited to open the newest KINTO location on the CSUDH campus for students, faculty, and staff. To make the program even more accessible, for the first year, we are offering a special discounted hourly rate to the CSUDH community.”
Additionally, CSUDH is in the early stages of reconfiguring the space along Victoria Parkway into a Metro Transit Hub. This joint project with the City of Carson would be funded by $3.5 million allocated to the campus by LA Metro. The ultimate vision of “Mobility for All” is to create a campus Mobility Hub to help minimize commuters’ carbon footprint with upgraded public transit and transportation inter-modalities.
“Just as the university upgraded its infrastructure to support the 1984 Olympics and host events, CSUDH aims to ready the campus to better serve attendees of the 2028 Summer Olympics, for which we are hosting several events,” said Vice President for University Advancement Eva Sevcikova.
“Whether it’s higher education, the government, or the private industry, every partner at the table is driven by a collective focus on the socio-economic mobility of our students— helping them attain a college degree and join the region’s workforce,” she said. “These initiatives promise to create ripples throughout the South Bay, benefitting communities and better connecting us all.”
May 6-10 is Teacher
Appreciation Week this year, but in an era of headlines and concern about burnout and stress, I join many others who believe teachers should be applauded and deeply appreciated all year long.
WE know teachers are not sufficiently valued in our society if we measure their worth by money—yet after parents, teachers are probably the greatest influencers and molders of children’s futures.
For many teachers and educators, it is not money that keeps them in this profession, but better salaries would still enable many more qualified people to enter and remain in it. We must do much more to recognize the importance of teaching in our nation and celebrate the best educators in a very visible way.
Being the kind of educator who consistently nurtures, respects, and inspires the students in their care is a special calling, and we all owe an immense debt of gratitude to every professional who answers this call.
How many of us still have wonderful memories about our own favorite teachers? When I was a child my teachers joined our parents and other community members in weaving a seamless safety net of caring for children, and provided buffers of love and encouragement that helped combat the negative in-

“But the work is not done yet,” he continued. “We are opening the new Compton High School in 2025, building a new Centennial High School after that, and continuing to provide better education and elevating the scholars in our District. I am excited to help guide the process on the Board, and as Board President, I will continue to work tirelessly to
fluences of segregated small-town southern life.
They were role models who didn’t equate book smarts with common sense or goodness, but always stressed the importance of education as a means to help improve the lives of others and leave our community and world better than we found it.
They were also dedicated to working with children and young adults to set high standards and made clear their own belief that every student could achieve at high levels. All young people need adults who believe in them and expect them to achieve, who love them, and whom they love so much that they live up to their expectations of success.
I wish for these kinds of teachers for every student.
The Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools® program is especially proud that so many of the college-aged Servant Leader Interns (SLIs) who are trained to teach at CDF Freedom Schools sites every summer go on to pursue careers in education and become these teachers and mentors for the
next generation.
I will never forget the indomitable Dr. Maya Angelou speaking at the graduation of our first small class of CDF Freedom Schools SLIs nearly 30 years ago.
She engulfed us with her passion and confidence in them: “Let me tell you who you are. You are the rainbow in the clouds for people whose faces you have not seen yet, whose names you don’t know yet, whose histories you haven’t been told yet. And you are, each one of you, individually, privately, each one of you is a rainbow chosen to be in the clouds for somebody.”
Every teacher has the unique opportunity to be that rainbow of hope for their students. Children and young people need adults who never give up on them, are constantly searching for their special gifts, and who refuse to let them fail.
The best teachers do this every day. This week is a special reminder to thank all who are already doing their part to transform young people’s chances and our nation’s future by mentoring, challenging, nurturing, and inspiring the students in their care right now.
raise this District to greater heights.”
Ali has served 17 years on the CUSD Board of Trustees, and is the longest serving President in the history of the Compton Unified School District. He helped lead a dramatic turnaround of the district’s educational outcomes as well as help pull it from the brink of state takeover (or state receivership).
The Compton Unified School District Board of Trustees represents seven Trustee areas and are elected by the registered voters residing within those areas. To be eligible for election, Trustees must reside in the area in which they are running for election. The area voters elect the seven Trustees on a staggered basis, such that every two years voters elect either three or four Trustees.
Following those elections, the Board then elects its officers at the next Board meeting for a yearly term.
The National College Resources Founda-

THE two-day event began on April 26, 2024. The first day consisted of combine testing and one on one. Based on how the athletes perform, some are invited to come back the next day.
On a sunny Saturday morning student athletes gathered on the fields at Lynwood high school those that weren’t able to attend during came in.
Student athletes from all over California come out to this event to get evaluated from coaches from many HBCU and get offers.
As many other student athlete waited for phase two of the event, they were on the sidelines stretching while they wait. As the music was playing in the background many did their drills while others waited.
Many of the student athletes have been playing football since they were little.
Jordan Davis, from Diablo Valley College in the Bay Area, came out for evaluations in hopes of speaking for one of the coaches.
The dreams many of these student athletes its to get an offer by some of these coaches, without the need to stay closer to home.
The HBCU range from many different universities, from Jackson State University, Prairie View A&M University and North Carolina Central.
“HBCU is my top pick when it comes to colleges,” said Davis, who is excited to talk to one of the coaches during this event. “So I’m

“But today is really what I’m looking for, and that’s the competition piece,” said Magana, the Jackson State cornerback coach. “Oneon-ones, how you plan against somebody else on the football field.
Prairie View A&M University coach Reggie Moore, feels that coming to these events are very beneficial for student athletes.
“This event has been a tremendous asset for kids that need a second opportunity to kind of get looked at and to have a chance to go forward and seek scholarships,” Moore said. “A lot of these HBCUs aren’t out this way and it’s a good opportunity for guys to get looked at and evaluated and maybe get a chance to go to a different part of the country and see something different.”
HBCU is my top pick when it comes to colleges,” said Davis, who is excited to talk to one of the coaches during this event. “So I’m happy that the coach are out here to give us a chance to do stuff.
Many student athletes just want to be seen by the HBCU coaches and get offered and they don’t fear going away from home.
Don Henry feels that an event like HBCU gives student athletes an opportunity to be seen by the coaches and get offers.
“Good for the players to get exposure in-front of college coaches and show off their skills in front of coaches and get an opportunity,” said Henry. “Any school that offers me, I’ll go it don’t matter how far or close it is from home.”

There has been a push in recent years for the Oscars to add an award for stunt work. I’m all for it, sure, give some often-unrecognized professionals their moment in the sun. My guess is it’s going to happen eventually, given the passion of the advocates and no apparent strong argument against it.
Da-
vid Leitch is no doubt a proponent of the movement, seeing as he’s a former stunt performer himself and his film
“The Fall Guy” is basically a two-hour plea to give stunt performers their due. Which isn’t to say it isn’t a highly entertaining plea. It’s just about the most fun you can possibly have watching a plea.
Ryan Gosling stars as stunt performer Colt Seavers. At the start of the film, Colt spends his days building a relationship with aspiring director Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt) when he’s not doubling for megastar Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). A stunt goes wrong and Colt’s back is broken, which also damages his relationship with Jody. Eighteen months later, Colt’s back is healing, but things between he and Jody may be permanently severed.
But then he gets a call from Gail (Hannah Waddingham), Tom’s go-to producer. Tom is filming a movie in Australia, and everyone wants Colt for stunt work. And “everyone” means Tom, Gail, and the movie’s director: Jody. He reluctantly makes the trip only to learn that Jody emphatically does not want him and Gail has ulterior motives. Tom has gone missing and Gail needs an able-bodied nobody to help track him down. Colt agrees to investigate, only because this movie is Jody’s chance to prove herself as a director and it can’t be completed without Tom.
Colt is soon spending his days filling in for Tom on set, helping Jody with her film in the only way he knows how, by doing dangerous stunts. It takes some time for her anger to subside, but he’s soon back in her good graces and there’s even a hint of the two rekindling their relationship. But then there’s his night job of tracking down Tom. It’s even more dangerous, with drug dealers, gun-toting henchmen, a sword-wielding girlfriend (Teresa Palmer), and a dead body on ice. The adventure requires Colt to use all his expertise as a stuntman, which means Leitch and the movie’s stunt team get to show
off all their expertise. Indeed all the stunt work is impressive, though I feel like the film is cheating a bit by actively trying to get me to pay attention to it. And it’s distractingly smooth at times, like Colt is way too competent for a person in this position. It’s been established that he can handle stunts in a controlled environment, but can he really handle action this well in the moment when he’s unprepared? The trailer hints at the disparity between movies and “real life” in a moment when Colt decides he can’t safely make a jump from a rooftop, but there are hardly any other scenes like that
in the movie. Also, it’s really unwise to have Gosling do scenes where he flies through glass unharmed when certain viewers will remember a scene from 2016’s “The Nice Guys” where his character thinks he can handle broken glass easily and faces consequences when he’s wrong.
Still, “The Fall Guy” delivers on what audiences came to see: creative, stunt-filled action and a delightfully witty romance. Couples that see this movie together are going to wish they had the chemistry of Gosling and Blunt, even when they’re arguing. Movie buffs will be equally enchanted by the love this movie has for
the industry, especially stunts. Fans of well-conceived mysteries may sadly feel left out on this one. But overall, I can say that I “fell” for “The Fall Guy.” That line makes me want to bang my head against a wall. I wish I had a stunt double for that.
Grade: B-
“The Fall Guy” is rated PG-13 (Hooray! The first non-R-rated movie I’ve seen since March!) for action and violence, drug content and some strong language. Its running time is 126 minutes.
