Local leaders and residents unite to honor city’s history and culture in milestone celebration
On Tuesday, May 7, the City of Compton marked its 136th year since incorporation with a special celebration.
RESIDENTS and community leaders came together to commemorate the city’s founding on May 11, 1888, when it started with a population of 500 and has since grown to nearly 100,000 residents representing diverse backgrounds.
“It was great to see the
community gather for such an important celebration. Compton is a culturally rich city and this event was a great opportunity to celebrate all aspects of its history and legacy” stated Mayor Emma Sharif. “It’s important to reflect on how much we have grown since our establishment and honor our achievements along the way.”
Attendees learned about the unique elements of the city’s history and connected with the roots and milestones of the city over the years. The celebration was a testament to the diversity, resilience, and rich cultural
heritage that defines Compton.
“Compton has a lively community,” said Compton City Clerk Vernell McDaniel. “It is amazing to celebrate 136 years of resilience and I’m looking forward to seeing how the city continues to change. We appreciate everyone who came out and celebrated our community.”
The city will also be hosting a Founder’s Day Celebration in collaboration with the Compton 125 Historical Society later this month on Saturday, May 25 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Douglas Dollarhide Community Center.

On Thursday, May 9, a total of 52 polished recruits lined up at STARS Center Gymnasium in what would be their final platoon formation as academy classmates. After 22 weeks of rigorous academy training, the recruits pressed through an equally intense and meticulous formal class inspection by law enforcement executives just before the ceremony.
THE ceremony was a formal transformation of academy recruits into sworn peace officers. Sheriff Robert G. Luna presided over the graduation ceremony and delivered encouraging remarks to the 7 females and 49 male graduates and their guests.
Sheriff Robert G. Luna, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was joined on stage by Chief Jason Sims, Culver City Police Department; Chief Gary Tomatani, Hawthorne
Police Department; Chief Brian Solinsky, South Pasadena Police Department; Chief Darren Arakawa, South Gate Police Department; Assistant Chief Robert Dunn, Torrance Police Department; Ms. Diane Stone, Sheriff’s Relief Association Representative in presenting the 52 graduates with their Peace Officer Standards
and Training certificates. The graduates were then officially sworn in as California Peace Officers.
In a special segment of the ceremony, Deputy Jorge Mata, LASD, was named as the class Honor Recruit. This award is earned by the recruit who achieved the highest numerical average based upon lead-

The new central office will cultivate and innovate transformative practices across the system’s 23 universities as well as underserved communities.
After a competitive review process involving multiple university candidates, the California State University (CSU) has selected California State University, Sacramento, as the location for its new CSU Statewide Central Office for the Advancement of Black Excellence.
THE systemwide office serves as the primary entity to oversee and implement the recommendations articulated in the CSU’s Black Student Success report issued last June. In addition, the office will cultivate and innovate transformative practices across the system’s 23 universities as well as underserved communities.
“We are thrilled to establish the CSU’s first-ever Statewide Central Office for the Advancement of Black Excellence, not only to accelerate action and drive change across
our 23 universities but, just as important, to clearly demonstrate our institution’s deep commitment to becoming a national leader in Black student success,” said CSU Chancellor Mildred García.
“With an exemplary track record in supporting and elevating outcomes for Black students, I am proud that Sacramento State has been selected as the inaugural site and will continue its legacy of inspiring, informing and empowering our statewide efforts in
close collaboration with our universities across the system,” Garcia added.
A CSU statewide office selection committee, which included members from the original Black Student Success Workgroup, selected Sacramento State for its proven success in supporting Black students, staff and faculty, and addressing inequities and achievement gaps within the Black student community.
Sacramento State’s vision for oversight of the office, in-
cluding strategies to enhance experiences both in and outside of the classroom, were a deciding factor in its selection.
The office will be funded with an initial investment of $1.3 million, part of an original $10 million one-time allocation to Black student success initiatives provided by the Chancellor’s Office following the publication of the student success recommendations.
“We are honored by the trust and support shown by Chancellor García and the CSU for Sacramento State and our work to help Black students realize their educational dreams,” said Sacramento State President Luke Wood.
half of the entire CSU,” Wood added.
In addition to the selection of the statewide office, the CSU recently completed its first-ever systemwide inventory of practices and services that aligned with the Black Student Success report recommendations.
As part of this self-assessment, universities submitted action items to advance their efforts in supporting Black student success. The Chancellor’s Office allocated more than $4.5 million to help fund these activities at all 23 universities.

In recent weeks, California’s mostly tranquil college quads have erupted into epicenters of pro-Palestine and anti-Israel activism. At Stanford’s White Plaza, dozens of tents have sprung up, while UCLA’s Royce Hall was tagged with the graffiti message “Free Gaza”. Students are demanding divestment from companies linked to Israel and calling for a U.S. government-brokered ceasefire in the ongoing Israeli-Hamas conflict.
A Groundswell of Support, But Tensions Rise
This wave of protests and student encampments reflects a surge of support for Palestinian civilians in Gaza which has ignited tensions on campuses.
As the protesters try to stand their ground, daily disruptions to campus routines including affecting graduation ceremonies, clashes involving students with and against non-student agitators, trespassing, and acts of vandalism underscore the issue’s complexity and its profound impact on university communities.
Balancing Act for University Leaders
The student protests have posed a formidable challenge for administrators who must balance respecting free speech and the right to protest with maintaining safe and stable conditions on campus for students to pursue their studies, while also ensuring staff can perform their jobs effectively.
These challenges require university leaders to tread care-
fully to navigate the tensions and uphold core university values. Their decisions shape not only campus life but also the broader discourse on democracy and civil rights.
While echoing the spirit of past student movements, today’s student protests differ from those of the 1960s and 1970s, which focused on broader social and political affairs, encompassing issues like civil rights, the Vietnam War, and campus culture. These protests align more with the 1980s’ anti-apartheid protests, sharing a focus on specific global issues, collective action for institutional change, and campus-based activism.
A key difference is today’s use of social media as an orga-
“Placing the statewide office on our campus acknowledges our work and success, and further highlights our programs such as the first-ever Black Honors College, as well as our having the largest population of Black students of any CSU campus. We know our success will be reflected and multiplied by the work that will be done here on benizing tool.
The Rise of Social Media
Social media platforms like Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram enable rapid mobilization but can inadvertently create echo chambers, where students encounter information that reinforces their existing beliefs. This fosters a more polarized environment compared to the reliance on traditional campus newspapers, mainstream media coverage and political pamphlets and leaflets of the past.
The Challenge of Antisemitism
The current wave of protests risk tipping into intolerance by conflating criticism of Israel with prejudice against Jewish students. Universities face a delicate challenge: creating an environment where pro-Pal-
“The selection of the statewide office represents a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to advancing equity and inclusivity within the CSU,” added Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic and Student Affairs Dilcie D. Perez. “We are committed to ensuring that we create the opportunities that allow all students to thrive, and we look forward to partnering with Sacramento State in moving this important work forward.” estinian and pro-Israeli voices can be heard, while maintaining respect and ensuring that rising antisemitism does not take hold.
Historically, Jewish students have been at the forefront of social justice movements, marching alongside Black students for civil rights and LGBTQ+ students for equal rights. However, today some Jewish students feel a lack of similar support from student groups advocating for the Palestinian cause. As a result, some report feeling intimidated and unsafe on campus.
Universities must cultivate an atmosphere of inclusivity and intersectionality, ensuring students from all backgrounds can advocate for their beliefs. Open dialogue and mutual respect are essential to avoid marginalizing

(StatePoint) In today’s evolving reproductive health landscape, informed decision making about contraception is crucial, particularly for women affected by inherited blood clotting conditions or thrombophilia. Selecting the right birth control method is pivotal, say experts, who point to research that shows the risk for potentially life-threatening blood clots is 35 times greater among women with genetic clotting disorders who use estrogen-based contraceptives.
Recent advances in technology and healthcare policies have fueled debate around screening for thrombophilia, a condition characterized by an increased tendency to develop blood clots, before starting estrogen-based contraceptives.
Current guidelines discourage universal thrombophilia testing, citing concerns such as costs and potential adverse psychological effects. Instead, selective screening, focused on individuals with personal or family histories of blood clots, is more likely to be embraced by the medical community. Also, concerns about unfair treatment by insurers or employers due to genetic disclosures underscore the complexities of this approach.
However, people in support of a more patient-centered approach to healthcare and this type of birth control decision making stress the importance of identifying individuals at higher risk for blood clots.
Each year, many hundreds of women in the United States
alone lose their life due to blood clots linked to estrogen-based contraception, as studies demonstrate. Advocates for genetic testing emphasize its role in facilitating personalized healthcare decisions, potentially reducing the incidence of clot-related fatalities, and empowering women with information and a more patient-centric approach to reproductive healthcare.
Cost considerations remain a significant factor, but for many, the value of preserving health and saving lives far outweighs financial concerns. While insurance coverage for genetic testing varies, studies show a willingness among women to bear screening costs, underscoring the importance of informed decision-making.
Despite the perceived low absolute risk for blood clots among individuals with genetic clotting disorders, personal factors must be considered. Tailored approaches to contraceptive decisions, guided by individual risk profiles, may be warranted, especially in certain populations with higher rates of genetic clotting disorders.
For individuals with genetic thrombophilia, contraceptive options such as copper IUDs or progestin-only pills offer effective alternatives without increasing clotting risks. Prioritizing safety and effectiveness is paramount in contraceptive decision making.
While genetic testing may
cause some level of anxiety or concern, studies indicate that most individuals do not regret pursuing testing. Knowledge empowers individuals to make proactive decisions about their health, outweighing potential psychological burdens.
Despite legal protections, concerns about discrimination persist. Understanding the implications of genetic disclosures on insurance and employment can inform decision-making processes, though these concerns may rightfully deter some individuals from pursuing testing.
Women interested in pursuing genetic testing should talk with their healthcare provider about their testing options. Genetic counselors can also provide valuable help. Women considering their contraception options and interested in learning more about genetic testing can get more information from the Rowan Foundation at www. alexrowanfoundation.org.
Genetic testing holds the promise of empowering women to engage in informed discussions with healthcare providers, fostering shared decision making in reproductive healthcare. Informed choices, guided by genetic information, may pave the way for more personalized and patient-centered care.

From Civil Disobedience to Increased Police Presence
The increased reliance on law enforcement to manage student protests today is a stark contrast to the 60s and 70s, when administrators often tolerated civil disobedience. Universities today seem quicker to call in police to disperse encampments or quell disruptions, raising concerns about the potential for police using excessive force on students and the chilling effect it may have on free speech.
History reminds us of tragedies like the Kent State shootings in 1970, where National Guard troops opened fire on unarmed students protesting the Vietnam War, leaving four dead and nine wounded.

Police force should be a last resort against student protestors. Universities must prioritize de-escalation, while ensuring that police maintain peace when necessary.

Similar protests have sprung up at Stanford, San Francisco State University, Occidental, UC Irvine, and UC Riverside with varying degrees of disruption and administrative responses. At Sonoma State University, protests have been relatively subdued, with campus police taking a hands-off approach.
The situation at the University of Southern California (USC) reached a boiling point, with arrests, the cancellation of a pro-Palestinian valedictorian’s speech, and ultimately, the university cancelling its main commencement ceremony.
UCLA witnessed a convergence of pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli groups, leading to con-

“We get to do a lot of art in the school,” said sixth-grade student Destiny Turner, who aspires to be a singer and performer in the future. “I really like painting and dancing. It helps me focus more on the things I have to do. You get to show ac-
frontations that escalated to violence. Following a night of clashes prolonged due to delayed police intervention, classes were cancelled, and ultimately police were called in to dismantle the pro-Palestinian protesters’ unlawful encampment.
These student protests highlight growing activism on campuses and underscore the complex challenges university leaders face when managing passionate student demonstrations and navigating pressure from lawmakers and alumni.

Recognized as an arts education pioneer, Lynwood Unified was commended by Turnaround Arts for its dedication to using arts as a vital educational tool, honoring Superintendent Gudiel R. Additionally, the District showcased its visionary approach to nurturing an arts-centric community at the LACOE Celebrating Arts Education with Equity and Vision event on May 1.
“At our Turnaround Arts schools, innovation and imagination are thriving, student engagement and achievement are improving, and school cultures are radiating with positivity,” Crosthwaite said. “Art teaches our students about the potential impact of their imagination and gives them the freedom to express it, and we are grateful to be able to provide our students with enriching and powerful learning experiences.”

On April 2, 109-yearolds Viola Fletcher and Lessie Benningfield Randle appeared together at a Tulsa courthouse in a hearing before Oklahoma’s Supreme Court.
MOTHER Fletcher and Mother Randle, as they are known in their communities, are the last two known survivors of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. In 2020, they were part of a group of survivors and descendants who filed a lawsuit seeking reparations for the White supremacist mob violence that destroyed Tulsa’s Greenwood District on May 31-June 1, 1921, devastating Tulsa’s Black community with effects that have rippled through generations.
At the time of the massacre,
Greenwood was one of the most prosperous Black communities in the country, nicknamed “Black Wall Street,” and home to Black businesses, theaters, churches, restaurants, and thousands of Black citizens.
By the end of the mob violence, historians estimate as many as 300 Black citizens were killed, 35 city blocks were burned down, and 10,000 people were left unhoused. Instead of stopping attackers, police deputized White civilians.
They gave them more guns and ammunition, and the Oklahoma National Guard helped round up and detain 6,000 Black residents. No one was charged for any of the deaths, injuries, or property damage. The lawsuit has been an attempt to seek a measure of justice.
In 2021, Mrs. Fletcher, Mrs. Randle, and Mrs. Fletcher’s brother Hughes Van Ellis, who passed away in October, were invited to provide Congressional testimony on the massacre’s centennial.
Mrs. Fletcher, who had just
turned seven when the massacre happened, said: “On May 31st in 1921, I went to bed at my family’s home in the Greenwood neighborhood of Tulsa. The neighborhood I fell asleep in that night was rich—not just in terms of wealth, but in culture, community, heritage, and my family had a beautiful home. We had great neighbors and I had friends to play with. I felt safe. I had everything a child could need. I had a bright future ahead of me . . . Within a few hours, all that was gone.”
She continued: “I will never forget the violence of the White mob when we left our home. I still see Black men being shot and Black bodies lying in the street. I still smell smoke and see fire. I still see Black businesses being burned. I still hear airplanes flying overhead. I hear the screams. I have lived through the massacre every day. Our country may forget this history, but I cannot.”
Mrs. Randle, who was six, testified about her own memories before her grandmother’s home was destroyed: “I didn’t
have any fears as a young child, and I felt very safe. My community was beautiful. It was filled with happy and successful Black people.
Then, everything changed. It was like a war. White men with guns came and destroyed my community. We couldn’t understand why. What did we do to them? We didn’t understand. We were just living, but they came, and they destroyed everything. They burned houses and businesses . . .They murdered people.
We were told they just dumped the dead bodies into the river. I remember running outside of our house. I ran past dead bodies. It wasn’t a pretty sight. I still see it today in my mind—100 years later.”
Mrs. Randle added: “You can help us get some justice. America is still full of examples where people in positions of power, many just like you, have told us to wait. Others have told us it is too late. It seems like justice in America is always so slow or not possible for Black people. We are made to feel crazy just for asking for things to
be made right. There are always so many excuses for why justice is so slow or never happens at all . . .We have waited too long, and I am tired. We are tired.” She ended: “I am asking you today to give us some peace. Please give me, my family, and my community some justice.”
Last summer, a judge dismissed their case. Many observers believe their appeal before the state’s Supreme Court on whether they have the right to continue their lawsuit may be one of the final chances for Mrs. Fletcher and Mrs. Randle to receive some measure of justice and peace. They said in a joint statement: “We are grateful that our now-weary bodies have held on long enough to witness an America, and an Oklahoma, that provides race massacre survivors with the opportunity to access the legal system.
Many have come before us who have knocked and banged on the courthouse doors only to be turned around or never let through the door.” The fight continues.

You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. Notice To Property Owner: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. NOTICE OF TRUSTEE’S SALE
NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property.
NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (866)-960-8299 or visit this Internet Web site https://www. altisource.com/loginpage.aspx using the file
number assigned to this case 2016-03977CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.
NOTICE OF TRUSTEE’S SALE
NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction, if conducted after January 1, 2021, pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (855)-976-3916, or visit this internet website https://tracker. auction.com/sb1079, using the file number assigned to this case 2016-03977-CA to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid, by remitting the funds and affidavit described in Section 2924m(c) of the Civil Code, so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase.

“Civil War” presents one of the most intriguing premises of the year, maybe of the last several years: what if Texas and California were to secede from the United States and join forces to wage war against their former home country? In short, everyone would lose. The economy would tank so badly that $300 would buy you a ham sandwich or cheese sandwich – but not both. There wouldn’t be a sports stadium left for sports and not crisis centers. Violence and death would lurk around every corner. And needless to say, things would be a nightmare for the press.
DUNST stars as Lee Smith, a hardened photographer. She’s not without her compassionate side, giving her life-saving press jacket to stranger Jessie (Cailee Spaeny) during a riot in New York City. But otherwise, she is fearlessly committed to bringing America (whatever that means anymore) the truth about the war. She and her colleague Joel (Wagner Moura) set off to Washington D.C. to get what will likely be the final interview with the President (Nick Offerman) before advancing Western forces inevitably take him. The two are joined by occasionally-annoying tagalong Jessie and veteran reporter Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson, always a great scene-stealing presence, and here making the most of his most high-profile role to date).
Much of “Civil War” is a glorified road trip movie largely set in rural areas,
which I suppose makes sense since the movie can’t afford to show major cities getting torn to pieces in every scene. But the small-scale villains are even scarier than the largescale ones, with fewer authorities than ever around to keep them in check. The team visit a gas station where thieves are tortured for as long as the
captors can have fun torturing them. Even worse is a militia group filling a mass grave of civilians that were probably not killed as an act of war, but whose disappearance will probably be lazily blamed on the war.
“Civil War” can’t be bothered to answer all the questions it raises, like those involving
they don’t like – some people just want an excuse to shoot people regardless of what they represent. Humanity is forever on the edge of destroying itself from within and all that.
Watching “Civil War” reminded me of “The Purge” with its mass violence with or without sense. That franchise started off as a pretty standard home-invasion thriller with lots of bells and whistles about the overlying concept of The Purge that weren’t really necessary for the small-scale conflict. The sequels got deeper into why people needed to kill for reasons other than revenge, while at the same time expanding the scale of the action with ever-growing budgets. Maybe there’s a future for “Civil War” as a franchise. The sequels will need to spend more money, though, because the D.C.-set finale of this movie looks rushed and cheap.
the origins of the war. Given that Texas and California are the states that seceded, I can only assume that immigration was a major factor, though details are left unclear. Not all the violence in this movie is about the war anyway, some people just want an excuse to shoot people they don’t like. In fact, it’s not necessarily people
“Civil War” might be onto something as a first chapter in a series that will have many sequels and prequels. On its own, however, I found it bland. There are certainly some powerful scenes, like one with an unbilled Jesse Plemmons as a militia member chillingly doling out death sentences according to his whims. The stars of Moura, Spaeny, and Henderson are deservedly going to rise thanks to their performances here, though I can’t be the only one who walked out of the theater thinking that Spaeny’s character was responsible for too many deaths for her character to be likeable. I can’t say the film lives up to the ambitiousness of its premise, but with more worldbuilding in future installments, there’s potential here for a memorable dystopian future.
Grade: C
“Civil War” is rated R for strong violent content, bloody/disturbing images, and language throughout. Its running time is 109 minutes. Contact Bob Garver at rrg251@nyu.edu.
