Harry Belafonte

Singer, actor, activist, and cultural icon Harry Belafonte has passed at the age of 96. Belafonte was a striking force in the middle of the Civil Rights

Movement during the 1960s. However, his activism for social and racial justice was not limited to a certain time period. The star of "Carmen Jones" and "Buck and the Preacher," Belafonte was also a giant on the big screen. The song, "Day-O" is perhaps Belafonte's most memorable song.

continued from page 1 included a Farmer’s Market with locally and sustainably grown produce, free recycling of e-waste, batteries, and shoes, and a talk by environmentalist and artist Kim Abeles.

The campus has become a sustainability leader in higher education for innovations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across campus with new rooftop solar panel installations and other energy-sav- ing measures. Just last month, the university earned STARS Gold under the AASHE sustainability ranking system. No other campus in the CSU system has progressed from Bronze through Gold in a shorter time.

Each year, the Office of Sustainability hosts the Earth Day Festival to highlight the university’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and to supporting environ- mental justice. Communities of color are inordinately burdened by the effects of climate change. Sustainability is one of CSUDH’s core values and one of the critical ways we support our South Bay neighbors.
