Compton’s Alma Backyard Farms hosts L.A. County’s food grantee event

Event in Compton celebrates 46 nonprofits working to provide BIPOC communities with more equitable access to nutritious and affordable food

Nearly three dozen community-based groups convened at Alma Backyard Farms in Compton to celebrate receiving federally funded L.A. County grants to ease food insecurity in our region’s most vulnerable communities.

The $9.6 million in grants will fund a wide array of food-related work conducted by local nonprofits to improve access to nutritious and affordable food in communities of color and immigrant populations. The funds have been made available through the American Rescue Plan Act, which earmark nearly $1.9 billion for Los Angeles’ postpandemic recovery efforts.

Roughly 1 in 3 County residents experienced food insecurity last year, meaning that they had insufficient access to a sufficient quantity of healthy food to feed themselves or their family. Brown and Black residents have disproportionately higher food insecurity rates, nearly 2 to 1 compared to White residents.

Food insecurity can lead to a number of poor health outcomes that disproportionately affect BIPOC residents, such as diabetes and obesity. Decreased academic and work performance has also been linked to food insecurity, studies show.

The grantees will help fulfill ambitious recommendations laid out in the newly released Los Angeles Food Equity Roundtable Action Plan. The Roundtable, a private-public partnership n Compton Green, see page 6

Compton revels in celebration as city unveils new fire engines

In 2022, the Compton City Council approved a resolution to shift funds from the American Rescue Plan Act to pay for four Pierce Arrow XT fire engines. Two years after that resolution, Compton and its residents stand to reap the benefits from that transaction and the agreement the City made with South Coast Fire Equipment Inc.

ON May 30, the City of Compton reveled in a grand display that showed off what they paid for. In celebrating with city residents, Compton officials beamed with pride as each fire engine was rolled out in grand style to the public, the results of nearly $5 million being invested in the new trucks.

The total cost of the combined fire engines and a truck with a ladder, the cost amounted to $4,988,817.35.

How Compounding Pharmacies Can Help Patients Get Needed Care

(StatePoint) Most consumers know how a traditional pharmacy works. Far fewer are aware of an alternative option: a compounding pharmacy. Here’s everything you need to know about these specialized healthcare facilities, and how they have the potential to improve your wellness.

WHAT is a compounding pharmacy? A compounding pharmacy employs the art and science of creating personalized medications based on a patient’s specific requirements, ensuring an individualized approach to healthcare.

“The conventional, mass-produced, one-sizefits-all approach to medication unfortunately does not work for all patients. Compounded medications however can help ensure patients get the therapies they need safely,” says Shaun Noorian, CEO and founder of Empower Pharmacy, a compounding pharmacy that specializes in men’s health, women’s health, der-

matology, hormone replacement, weight management, IV therapy, longevity, sexual wellness, mental health and gender affirming care. Why is this important? Compounded medications are crafted to address individual requirements, such as allergies to certain ingredients, dosage adjustments, or the need for alternative forms of medication (for example, needing a liquid instead of a pill form). In short, compounded medications deliver therapy required for individuals to live healthier, happier lives in a form that can optimize their care. These medications can also play a vital role in addressing challenges related to FDA-approved prescription medication shortages. How common are compound pharmacies? Compounding pharmacies make up 2% of the current pharmaceutical market, but that figure is growing as more patients and providers grasp the benefits that compounded medicines provide.

How does this change the role of the pharmacist? Pharmacists have always been an important part of patients’ care teams, dispensing medications and offering advice on side effects and dosing. At a compounding pharmacy,

that role also includes producing customized prescription drugs for patients, most often from raw ingredients. Are compounding pharmacies within reach for regular patients? Some compounding pharmacies are working to prioritize access. Empower Pharmacy, for example, provides medications at an affordable cost in an effort to ensure everyone has access to the treatments they need. And because the pharmacy operates online, patients with mobility and transportation issues are able to fill their prescriptions from the comfort of home.

Are there any safety issues to be aware of? Compounded medications are not FDA-approved, making it important for patients to stick to trustworthy pharmacies that use safe compounding practices. Be sure your pharmacy has Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board (PCAB) accreditation.

To learn more, visit empowerpharmacy.com.

“We believe that understanding the nuances of compounding, its benefits, and its role during FDA-approved shortages helps equip patients to make informed decisions about their healthcare,” says Noorian.

What If I Do Have A Brain?

After about a month on a health hiatus, things started returning to normal, and then I had a doctor’s visit scheduled for a checkup.

AT my visit, the doctor thoroughly examined me but couldn’t find anything wrong, and then I saw him standing there scratching his chin. Then he said, “I wonder if maybe you had a mini stroke?”

He looked at me a little bit and then said, “I think maybe you did have a mini stroke and we need to take some more examinations to check it out. I’ll schedule you for an MRI next

Fest

week. I want to see if maybe there is any brain damage.”

Quite often, The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage would tell me when I screwed something up, “Do you have a brain or what?”

She will also tell me when I don’t get things done precisely on schedule, “Where is your brain today?”

A few weeks ago, I was trying to fix something, and nothing was going right. Then, the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage walked in and casually told me, “If only you had a brain.”

What if, for example, the doctor finds I have a brain and has the proof? How would that set with The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage?

If they find my brain, I’ll

definitely keep any pictures they might have.

Then, when The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage says, “If you only had a brain.” I could pull out the picture of my brain, show it to her, and say, “Oh, my dear, here is a picture of my brain.”

The worst side of this scenario is that if the doctor does find my brain, and has the evidence, then, the worst days of my life begin. No matter what I do, it is my responsibility now. After all, I do have a brain.

I was sitting in my easy chair drinking coffee when The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage came in and sat down.

She asked me, “Are you ready for your MRI tomorrow?”

Brown continued from page 1

It also welcomed guest musicians and music industry professionals in a panel discussion, as well as food and vendor booths.

Numerous musical styles were showcased, from rap, hip hop, folk, blues, and punk rock. Some of the inspiring acts included the dynamic duo Flyana Boss, Dominguez senior D3 and his brother P3, Uchie Boy, Jetbeezy, Gho$t Eyez, Eli Wishing on a Star, Treyvon Philips, Dominguez High School custodian Mr. Vic on the bass with the soul band The Mark Sells Band, punk rockers Buenos Nachos with Dominguez drumline captain Josiah, and many more.

The event was conceived by Jamar “Raj” Williams, Dominguez High School Audio Production Instructor and CTE AME Program Coordinator, who sees it growing into a larger showcase of all Compton Unified school musicians in the coming years.

of government, philanthropy and local nonprofits, seeks to fundamentally transform our region’s disconnected food system to better meet the needs of disadvantaged communities.

“The County has a responsibility to act as a safety net for our most vulnerable communities, who disproportionately suffer from food insecurity,” said L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn, who helped create the Food Equity Roundtable. “This new round of funding marks an important first step in bringing the Roundtable’s Action Plan to life and helping those most in need.”

Food production organizations supported reflect a wide range of diversity, from ALMA Backyard Farms’ urban agriculture programs in Compton to Street Company’s efforts to better feed the homeless in Lancaster through indoor hydroponic farming.

Food access groups receiving funds include Prosperity Markets, a one-of-a-kind Black farmers market and commerce hub for Black food producers and chefs, and Special Services for Groups/Asian Pacific Islander Forward Movement, which supports BIPOC farmers by creating better markets for culturally relevant crops like cassava and taro.

I was quiet for a moment, and then, looking at her, I said, “What if they find out that I do not have a brain?”

Without skipping a beat, she said, “Well, if that happens nothing will change. You’ll be the same person you’ve always been.”

Staring at her, she suddenly broke into hysterical laughter.

It took her a while to calm down, and when she did, she explained her laughter.

“As long as I’ve known you, you have worked quite well without using your brain. I’m sure that will continue for a long time yet to come.”

I’m not sure when, but one of these days, I will use my brain and surprise her. I’m not

sure how she will handle that shock, and I’m not sure how I will do it. I’m just going to have to wait for the results of the MRI.

As I was waiting for my doctor’s appointment, I thought of Bible verses in James 1:19-20, “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.”

My father always told me, “Listen and think before you speak.” This has been the great challenge of my life. My tongue does not seem to be attached to my brain for some reason.

Board of Education decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled separating children in public schools based on race unconstitutional,” Dr. Buul said. “The work is not done. We must continue to address system inequities to help students face the challenges of today.”

The expert panel consisted of Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D., California Secretary of State; Dr. Luke Wood, President, California State University, Sacramento and a member of California’s Racial Equity Commission; Dr. Edward Bush, President, Consumnes River College and President and Co-founder of the African American Male Education Network and Development (A²MEND); Dr. Adam Clark, President, California Association of African American Superintendents and Administrators; and Pamela Haynes, member of the California Community Colleges Board of Governors and a Los Rios Community College District Board Trustee.

Both Secretary Weber and Ms. Haynes experienced the segregation of schools before the Brown v. Board of Education decision and the subsequent integration while they were students in

California.

“This decision was significant because it addresses the issue of what racism and separation does to people physically, emotionally and economically,” Secretary Weber said. “We’ve learned since then that the decision has been a mixed bag, as we’ve seen the disintegration of many things that were important to the Black community that we must continue to address today.”

The California Community Colleges presented the Brown v. Board of Education roundtable discussion as part of its ongoing commitment to address the racial inequities in higher education and how its policy initiatives, such as its Vision 2030 roadmap, are making a difference in educational outcomes for the Black and African American students the system educates today.

The California Community Colleges’ ICanGoToCollege.com campaign launched the EDUCATE. ELEVATE. podcast series to inspire current and prospective Black and African American students, particularly Black males, through thoughtprovoking conversations,

to enroll or stay enrolled in a California community college.

Topics include the benefits of California community colleges, services like Umoja and A2MEND designed to support Black students, and the availability of financial aid. The series also aims to increase student transfer rates to the University of California, California State University, private not for profit colleges and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Episode 8 and 9 of the three-part EDUCATE. ELEVATE. podcast series on Brown v. Board of Education are available now. Part three is scheduled to be released in mid-June and will feature a panel of community college students reacting to the expert panel discussion and sharing their thoughts and experiences on where higher education in California is today.

The EDUCATE. ELEVATE. podcast series on Brown v. Board of Education and previous episodes on other topics can be viewed now through the ICanGoToCollege.com website, YouTube channel and social media pages.

THE goal of this renovation is to ‘create a home away from home’ for the teachers, and to upgrade their lounge that hasn’t been renovated for many years.

“I have not seen or felt so much excitement in the hallways of Centinela, since the first day of school,” said County Administrator Dr. James Morris. “This is a monumental day for our school and community.”

Dozens of teachers, staff, administrators, students, and even parents gathered together in the hallway of Centinela with smiles on their faces waiting to see the surprise that the LA Rams and Bob’s Discount Furniture had for them.

Despite its large size, the staff lounge wasn’t fully utilized. Before the renovation, it contained just six tables and 11 chairs, which didn’t provide a

nice and comfortable setting.

After the renovation, the lounge was furnished with comfortable couches, tables, and chairs that made use of the entire space, rather than just a portion.

“Many of our teachers don’t use our lounge and probably haven’t used it in many years, but hopefully that’s going to change their mind now. It’s really a home away from home,” said the school’s principal, Kym Gero-Burris.

This isn’t the first time that the Los Angeles Rams partnered with another organization to bring something to the community, and it also won’t be the last. The Rams have big

goals for the future, especially with this new partnership with Bob’s.

“With Bob’s Discount Furniture we’re going to have a fan-cave sweepstakes. Someone is going to get Bob’s Discount Furniture to build a fan-cave within their home,” said Jennifer Prince, the Los Angeles Rams Chief Commercial Officer.

“We’re going to have Bob’s Discount Furniture present our fan cam at the SOFI Stadium and we also have them connected as the presenting partner of Rams Roster Moves, where we will be highlighting different trades, signings, and squad evaluations throughout

the season. This is a multifaceted, multi-year partnership,” said Prince.

Similar to the Rams, Bob’s Discount Furniture has always been an organization that loved to leave their mark in whatever community they find themselves in, but this specific renovation was special to them because it is the start of something new.

“Bob’s is thrilled to be partnering with the LA Rams to bring the staff lounge makeover on a national teacher appreciation day to the deserving community of Centinela elementary school,” said Bob’s Discount Furniture Divisional Vice President, Kevin Parker.

While the Rams partnership brings significant opportunities for Bob’s Discount Furniture, the most rewarding aspect is supporting Centinela Elementary School by reno-

vating a room for its dedicated staff, who shape the future of the community.

“They have our most precious people in their hands every day to teach and guide, I think that’s a pretty important job and we all got to support our teachers of today as much as we can. Bob’s is just trying to do a little bit along with the Rams, so we’re happy to have this partnership and be able to do it together,” Parker said.

Before unveiling the room to the staff, students, and parents, the principal expressed her gratitude towards both organizations.

“On behalf of the Inglewood Unified School District, and also the Centinela family, I want to thank the Rams and Bob’s Discount Furniture organization for funding this amazing project here at Centinela,” said Gero-Burris.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.

NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 800-605-2445 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site: www.servicelinkasap.com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case. Information about postponements

that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NO-

TICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code, If you are an “eligi-

ble tenant buyer”, you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder”, you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call 800-605-2445 for information regarding the trustee’s sale, or visit this internet website https://www.servicelinkasap.com, using the file number assigned to this case to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” of “eligible bidder”, you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase.

If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 866-539-4173 or visit this internet website www.ndscorp. com/sales, using the file number assigned to this case 24-00140-VCCA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT*: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are a “representative of all eligible tenant buyers” you may be able to purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call 888-264-4010, or visit this internet website www.ndscorp. com, using the file number assigned to this case 24-00140-VCCA to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as a “representative of all eligible tenant buyers” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. *Pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code, the potential rights described herein shall apply only to public auctions taking place on or after January 1, 2021, through December 31, 2025, unless later extended. ‘The Garfield Movie’ ushers in summertime

“Garfield and Friends,” based on comic strips by Jim Davis, was one of my favorite cartoons growing up. With all due respect to the show’s talented writers and other voice actors, the best thing about the show was Lorenzo Music’s performance as the title tabby. Music’s voice, which somehow always sounded like a yawn, was the perfect fit for a character that spent every waking moment wishing he wasn’t awake. Yes, Garfield would engage in frenzied eating, especially of lasagna, but that was mostly handled with whooshing noises from the sound effects team. Otherwise, Garfield, with Music’s voice, was the personification (catification?) of laziness.

Itake this moment to applaud Music as Garfield because I have nothing but negative things to say about Chris Pratt as the character in “The Garfield Movie.” The guy just doesn’t have it in him to sound that lazy. It’s not like he doesn’t have experience playing lazy. He was always something of slacker as Star-Lord and his “Parks and Recreation” character spent most of the first season milking an injury. But here, he always sounds like he’s up for an adventure. The movie around him isn’t much of a winner anyway, but it’s already off on the wrong paw when Garfield doesn’t sound like Garfield.

The story opens with a glimpse into Garfield’s days as a kitten, when he was left in an alley by his father Vic (Sam-

uel L. Jackson) and found his way to Jon (Nicholas Hoult), his doormat of an owner. The household soon adds loyal dog Odie (Harvey Guillen, limited to dog noises) and the pets live in sedentary luxury. Of course, something has to happen to

keep Garfield from enjoying complacency, and one night he finds himself cat-napped, as opposed to indulging in a cat nap. He and Odie are brought to a hideout where they meet the long-absent Vic. But Vic isn’t their captor, he’s very

ing her during a milk heist at a farm (sadly not Jim Davis’s “U.S. Acres,” though I would have loved that crossover) years earlier. But Vic can repay his debt if he, Garfield, and Odie can pull off the same heist now, with the farm having stronger security. The three reluctantly take on the assignment, even though Garfield and Odie are pampered housepets and Garfield and Vic’s relationship is sorely strained.

The rest of the movie is an adventure-comedy that could be filled by characters from any franchise with a spoiled lead lacking in skills and street smarts. The only thing that makes it recognizable as “Garfield” is that Odie, to the movie’s credit, is as awesome as ever with his ingenuity and unwavering friendship. A few physical gags work, and there are some scene-stealing moments from the villains and a bull voiced by Ving Rhames (I took twisted delight in the very idea of the Arby’s pitchman voicing future roast beef). But every time there’s a string of solid gags or decent action, the miscast Pratt will open his mouth and I’ll be reminded that this movie has a major flaw at a fundamental level.

“The Garfield Movie” is mostly middling, brought down by how much Pratt pales in comparison to Lorenzo Music. At least it has the decency to be wholly animated, as opposed to the Bill Murray movies where the environment was live-action and Garfield was a CGI abomination. The new movie is never “that” painful, but it doesn’t strike me as anyone’s best work either. I guess what I’m saying is that this movie, while it could have been worse, is lazy – and not in a way that’s on-brand for Garfield.

much on a short leash himself. The operation is actually headed by feline crime boss Jinx (Hannah Waddingham) and her hench-cats Roland (Brett Goldstein) and Nolan (Bowen Yang). She has a vendetta against Vic for abandon-

“The Garfield Movie” is rated PG for action/peril and mild thematic elements. Its running time is 101 minutes. Contact Bob Garver at rrg251@nyu.edu.
