Sen. Steve Bradford: “The Time is Right” to Run for Lieutenant Gov

Antonio Ray Harvey | California Black Media

California State Sen. Steven Bradford (DInglewood), 64, says the “time is right” and he is “up to the challenge” of becoming the next Lieutenant Governor of California.

BRADFORD , who serves as the Vice Chair of the California Legislative Black Caucus (CLBC), announced his bid for the second highest office in the state on April 22. The election will be held in 2026.

“I think it’s time we need someone in that office who is committed to doing the work. It’s not a glamorous job. It’s an intheweeds job but it’s a job that impacts us every day,” Bradford told California Black Media (CBM).

“I want to do the work that is in front of me,” said Bradford, who has served in the Legislature for 15 years as an Assemblymember and State Senator and will be term out at the end of this year.

“That’s what my career has been about: doing the work of the position I’ve been elected to do.”

In the Legislature, Bradford represents Senate District 35. It is home to nearly one million residents, and it includes the communities of Inglewood, Compton, Gardena, Torrance, Carson,

Harbor Gateway, San Pedro, Hawthorne, and Lawndale in Los Angeles County.

Under California’s Constitution, the Lieutenant Governor serves as Acting Governor whenever the Governor is absent from the state, and automatically becomes Governor if a vacancy occurs. The Lieutenant Governor is the President of the California Senate and votes in case of a tie. Currently, Eleni Kounalakis is the current Lieutenant Governor. However, her term in office is set to expire in 2026 due to term limits.

California State Treasurer Fiona Ma has also declared her candidacy for the Lieutenant Governor’s office and has launched her campaign. Bradford told CBM that he intends to visit every corner of the state to make the case that he is the person for the job.

“I have two years to touch all 58 counties. It’s not going to be an easy task, but I am up for it,” Bradford said. “We have to let the people know what I’ve done and what I plan to do as Lt. Governor. I am excited about the opportunity.”

Bradford said he is following in the footsteps of Mervyn M. Dymally, his mentor. Dymally was a trailblazing federal and state elected official representing Southern California. In 1974, Dymally made history by becoming California’s first Black Lieutenant Governor.

A member of the Democratic party and the CLBC, Dymally served in the U.S.

delegates from Africa with interests in commerce and trade with Black businesses.

House of Representatives and both houses of the State Legislature. He passed away in October 2021 at the age of 86.

“More importantly, that’s why I am running,” Bradford said of Dymally. “I want the challenge and I want to pay homage to the individual who got me involved in politics — that’s the state’s first and only African American Lt. Governor, Mervyn Dymally,” Bradford said.

Over the years, Bradford has championed legislation aimed at addressing racial disparities and advocated for justice in housing and property rights, police reform, as well as making the case for reparations for the descendants of enslaved Black Americans.

In 2021, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill (SB) 796 authored by Bradford. It authorized the County of Los Angeles to return the

beachfront property known as Bruce’s Beach to the family of the African American couple Willa and Charles Bruce, who purchased the Manhattan Beach site in 1912. However, the property was confiscated in the late 1920s through eminent domain.

Newsom also signed Bradford’s SB 2 into law. Also known as the Kenneth Ross Jr. Police Decertification Act of 2021, SB 2 was designed to increase law enforcement’s accountability that corrodes public respect and enforcement officers who commit serious misconduct and illegally violate a person’s civil rights.

SB 2 created a statewide decertification system to withdraw the certification of a peace officer in California following the conviction of serious crimes or termination from employment due to misconduct.

Originally launched December 12, 2023, LARRP continues to provide crucial financial support to landlords who have been economically impacted by the COVID19 pandemic. Spearheaded by the LA County Board of Supervisors and

Bradford served two years on the firstinthenation Task Force to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans.

Bradford and eight other members of the task force analyzed the institution of slavery and its continuous effects on the Black Americans.

Another bill Bradford authored, SB 1403 (formerly SB 490), proposes the establishment of a new state agency called the California American Freedman Affairs Agency (CAFAA). The agency, a direct recommendation of the reparations task force, would be responsible for setting up the infrastructure required to manage reparations activities as directed by the Legislature and Governor.

On May 16, the Senate Appropriations Committee voted 52 to approve the SB 1403. It now moves to the Senate Floor for a consideration.

“Our state is experiencing a significant economic downturn. People across California are struggling. Housing costs are out of reach, homelessness is at crisis levels, the global threat of climate change, underfunded schools, and debtinducing higher education costs,” Bradford said in an April 15 statement announcing his candidacy for lieutenant governor. “While California has led the nation on enacting smart, forwardthinking policies, the reality is that we must do more to solve our many challenges.”

administered by The Center by Lendistry, the program’s funding has increased by $6.7 million, bringing the total to over $74 million in financial support available to qualified landlords.

Eligible landlords have been able to apply for up to $30,000 per rental unit, covering past due rent and eligible expenses since April 1, 2022.

5 Things to Know About Asthma and Summer Heat

(StatePoint) Nearly 25 million people of all ages in the United States are living with asthma, a lifelong chronic disease that makes it harder to move air in and out of the lungs.

HERE’S what the American Lung Association wants everyone to know during summer, when extreme heat can make asthma harder to manage.

1. New challenges are emerging.

Beyond traditional asthma triggers like respiratory infections, secondhand smoke and pets, new challenges are emerging. The effects of climate change include extreme heat, poor air quality, increased allergens, extreme weather events, and more frequent and intense wildfires, all of which are making asthma more difficult to manage.

Excessive heat and humidity increase the risk of asthma exacerbations, asthmarelated hospitalization and asthmarelated death, especially for children and women. Patients should limit time outdoors during heat waves, seek access to air conditioning and take steps to improve indoor air quality, as humidity allows dust mites and mold to thrive.

2. City dwellers are particularly vulnerable.

Twothirds of the average U.S. city is made up of roads, parking spaces, sidewalks and roofs. Since these surfaces are typically dark and nonporous, they contribute to flooding, increased air pollution, poor health and what is known as “urban heat,” a phenomenon in which cities experience warmer temperatures than surrounding areas. Urban heat, combined with pollutants from power plants, motor vehicles and other pollution sources, creates

ozone pollution, also known as smog. Those with asthma can experience symptoms like shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing from both groundlevel ozone and particle pollution, as well as from the impacts of extreme weather and airborne allergens. Sadly, these issues disproportionally impact certain communities. Due to a history of discriminatory practices like systematic denial of mortgages, insurance loans, and other financial services on the basis of race and ethnicity, Black and Indigenous people, and other people of color, are more likely to be living in areas impacted by urban heat and poor air quality.

3. Flooding can harm lung health.

Increased severe storms due to climate change results in more flooding, which can harm lung health. Chemicals, sewage, oil, gas and other dangerous substances found in floodwaters can pose health risks, and mold, associated with asthma attacks, can grow anywhere there is water or dampness.

4. Advocacy efforts are underway.

The Smart Surfaces Coalition is made up of 40 national and international organizations committed to making Smart Surfaces the global urban design standard. Smart Surfaces encompass a suite of cuttingedge technologies, including reflective (cool) roofs and pavements, green roofs, trees, solar panels and rain gardens. Designed to mitigate urban heat, enhance

air quality and improve health, these transformative urban features can cool cities by 5 degrees F, reduce flooding, provide economic benefits and potentially advance environmental justice.

The American Lung Association, an active member of the Smart Surfaces Coalition, encourages cities to take these actions:

• Install lightcolored roads, parking lots and driveways to reflect sunlight and reduce heat.

• Install solar panels to convert sunlight into electricity and provide shade for roofs.

• Plant trees to increase shade.

• Select porous surfaces to collect polluted stormwater, soak it into the ground, and filter out pollution.

Other strategies to reduce urban heat, air pollution and ozone levels include using public transportation carpooling, increasing green spaces and installing cooling centers in extreme conditions.

5. Resources are available. Educational programming can help people better manage the disease in summer and yearround. Patients can check out the selfmanagement education programs, information and tools available at Lung. org/asthma or call the American Lung Association’s Lung Helpline at 1800LUNGUSA. Living with an illness, or being the caretaker to someone who is, can take a physical and emotional toll. Patients can get support and knowledge, and connect with others by joining the Lung Association’s Patient & Caregiver Network.

For the 24.8 million Americans living with asthma, extreme summer temperatures and emerging environmental threats can make life more difficult. Fortunately, new educational resources and expanded programming can help patients navigate new and old challenges alike.

COMMENTARY

Lessons for young graduates

This is the joyous time of year when families, friends, and teachers are cheering on graduates of all ages who have worked so hard and made them all so proud.

Ihope many of today’s high school and university graduates will wander off the beaten career path and help redefine success in our culture, asking not “How much can I get?” but “How much can I do without and share?”

Asking not “How can I find myself?” but “How can I lose myself in service to others and leave our nation and world better than I found it?”

During this season I like to share some of the lessons for life I offered my own children and many of the extraordinary young graduates I’ve had the privilege of meeting over the years.

The pace of change in the world young people are inheriting continues to accelerate exponentially, but I still believe there are some enduring values

and advice older people can share, and agree with Archibald MacLeish that “there is only one thing more powerful than learning from experience and that is not learning from experience.”

I feel strongly that it is the responsibility of every adult—parent, teacher, preacher and professional—to make sure that young people hear what we have learned from the lessons of life that helped us survive and succeed, for them to hear from us what we think matters, and for them to know that they are never alone as they go to meet the future.

Here are a few of those lessons:

–There is no free lunch. Don’t feel entitled to anything you don’t sweat and struggle for. Take the initiative in creating your own opportunity, and don’t wait around for other people to discover you or do you a favor. Don’t assume a door is closed; push on it. Don’t assume if it was closed yesterday, it’s closed today. And don’t ever stop learning and improving your mind.

–Set thoughtful goals and work quietly and systematically toward them. Resist quick fixes, simplistic answers and easy gains. They often disappear just as quickly as they come.

–Assign yourself. My daddy used to ask us whether the teacher gave us any homework.

My

Dr. James L. Snyder

Over the past few weeks (or was it months?) I’ve been recovering from some health issues. They were not that serious, just annoying. I spent one day in the hospital and the rest of the time in bed, which is not the kind of vacation I want.

During all that time, I’ve not had much time to exercise. I asked about it when I was at the Doctor’s for my last examination. I said, “Doctor, what should I do about exercising? I haven’t been able to do much of that during my sickness.”

Looking at me rather grimly, he said, “If I were you I would exercise daily.”

Smiling at the doctor, I said, “Thank You, I appreciate that.”

The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage drove me to

If we said no, he’d say, “Well, assign yourself.” Don’t wait around for your boss or your friends or spouse to direct you to do what you are able to figure out and do for yourself.

Don’t do just as little as you can to get by. If you see a need, don’t ask, “Why doesn’t somebody do something?” Ask, “Why don’t I do something?” Hard work, initiative, and persistence are still the nonmagic carpets to success for most of us. And a critical reminder in an election year and every year: Don’t be a political bystander and grumbler. Vote. Democracy is not a spectator sport.

–Never work just for money. Money alone won’t save your soul or build a decent family or help you sleep at night. Don’t confuse wealth or fame with

character. Don’t tolerate or condone moral corruption, whether it’s found in high or low places, whatever its color or class. And don’t confuse morality with legality. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once noted that everything Hitler did in Nazi Germany was legal. Don’t give anyone the proxy for your conscience.

–Don’t be afraid of taking risks or of being criticized. If you don’t want to be criticized, don’t say anything, do anything, or be anything. Don’t be afraid of failing. It’s the way you learn to do things right. It doesn’t matter how many times you fall down. All that matters is how many times you get up.

–Always listen for the genuine within yourself. “Small,” Einstein said, “is the number of them that see with their own

eyes and feel with their own hearts.” Try to be one of them. “There is,” the great Black theologian Howard Thurman said, “something in every one of you that waits and listens for the sound of the genuine in yourself. It is the only true guide you will ever have.

And if you cannot hear it, you will all of your life spend your days on the ends of strings that somebody else pulls.” There are so many noises and competing demands in our lives that many of us never find out who we are. Learn to be quiet enough to hear the sound of the genuine within yourself so that you can hear it in other people.

–And a final lesson: Never think life is not worth living or that you cannot make a difference. Never give up—no matter how hard it gets, and it will get very hard sometimes. An old proverb says that when you get to your wit’s end, that’s where God lives.

Harriet Beecher Stowe said when you get into a “tight place and everything goes against you, till it seems as though you could not hang on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and the time that the tide will turn.” The tide will turn—if you dream it, if you believe in it, if you have faith in it, struggle for it, and never give up.

only exercise Is jumping to conclusions

the Doctor’s appointment and was now driving me back to the house. While driving, she looked at me and said, “Well, do you think you’re going to start exercising now? What are you going to do first?”

I just looked at her and laughed.

“What are you laughing about?” She said.

“Did you hear what the doctor said? He said he would exercise daily for me.”

Looking at me with her eyes rolling in her head, she said, “This is why I have to come with you when you go to the doctors. You never hear what the doctor says. That is not what he said.”

“You heard it as well as I did,” I said, “he said, ‘If I were you, I would exercise daily.’”

Still rolling her eyes, she said, “That is not what I heard

him say.”

I was still chuckling, and then she said, “I think you have some loose marbles rolling around in your head.”

Smiling at her, I said, “Thank you, my dear, for recognizing that I have some activity in my head.”

If I look at my life, I can

blame a lot of my problems on my habit of jumping to conclusions. If only I would just let people say everything on their mind and wait until they’re done to make some kind of a decision.

I jump to conclusions because I think I know what that person is talking about. I wouldn’t get into so much trouble if I weren’t so smart.

A dumb person would usually say, “What do you mean?” And then wait for the explanation.

I come from Pennsylvania, and the Pennsylvania Dutch have a saying that goes like this: “Throw Papa down the stairs…” There’s a pause, and after the pause, they finish it by saying, “His hat.”

If you don’t listen to the whole sentence, you’re liable

to throw Papa down the stairs. But if you listen to the entire sentence, you will throw his hat down the stairs.

There are times when I don’t listen to the entire sentence.

In my Bible reading, I discovered a verse dealing with this.

Proverbs 25:89, “Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame. Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself; and discover not a secret to another.”

I get into trouble when I respond “hastily” to what I hear. I need to slow down and listen to the whole sentence, not just what I want to hear.

SPORTS Rams visit Compton students for football and fun

A fun, free family event featuring exciting youth football clinics and giveaways took place in Compton on Friday, May 17 at Whaley Middle School, in the Compton Unified School District, led by USA Football and the Los Angeles Rams.

“ IT was a good time to be out here and watching everybody have fun and having a good time,” said edge rusher Jared Verse, who was selected in the first round (No. 19 overall) of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Rams.

USA Football’s Blitz event offered a day of free youth football activities for students. The event marks one of several Blitz events taking place nationwide through August.

The Blitz featured a Fan Fest area, complete with youth football clinics, yard games,

giveaways, and appearances from the Rams Cheerleaders and mascot Rampage, and other exciting activities for kids and families.

More than 700 students from various schools in the Compton Unified School District attended throughout the day. In addition, the Rams 2024 rookie class supported USA Football’s 3rd annual Los Angeles Blitz Fan Fest and were in attendance during the daylong event.

Whaley Middle School

Principal Ronald Wheaton sounded excited about the partnership between the school district and the Rams.

“It means more than you can imagine,” Wheaton said. “It’s a birth of a new beginning. First of all, the kids were so excited for this to happen. They couldn’t believe it…This means everything to us, not just to Whaley, but to the community itself.”

USA Football is the sport’s governing body in the United States and the sole organizer of the U.S. National Teams that

represent the country in international competition, including when flag football debuts at the

Summer Olympics Games in Los Angeles in 2028.

The Rams and USA Football’s efforts throughout Southern California have helped bring flag football to young athletes wanting to pursue the sport through numerous camps, clinics and talent identification camps.

Rams rookie defensive lineman David Olajiga said the event was a good way to being about engagement with students.

“It’s great to be of service to the community and everything, Olajiga said. “I definitely enjoy giving back to the kids.”

Clark and Fever prevail against Sparks

LOS ANGELES Los Angeles Sparks discovered the Indiana Fever is more than a oneperson team. With a lot of hype surrounding Caitlin Clark, the rookie guard from Iowa, the other players for the Fever helped Indiana come up with its first win. And they did it at the expense of the Sparks.

Clark struggled in the Fever’s 7873 win at Cryptocom Arena. For the game, Clark made only 4 of 14 field goal attempts and finished with 11 points, not exactly earthshattering numbers. But she didn’t have to be perfect. Her teammates took up the scoring slack.

Indiana recorded its first win by playing defense, especially in the second half. At halftime, Indiana trailed the Sparks, 4534. The doubledigit deficit was mostly of their own making as the Fever misfired on open looks at the basket.

After giving up 45 points

in the first half, Indiana held the Sparks to 28 points through the last two quarters. The pivot in the game came in the third quarter when Los Angeles scored 11 points while the Fever put up 19 points. Indiana then finished the Sparks with a 2517 advantage in the fourth period. For the Sparks, a team in the same boat as the Fever with just one win on the season, the defeat could be blamed on several factors. For one, the Sparks

played giveaway for most of the night, accounting for 18 turnovers in the game. The sloppy ballhandling by the Sparks led to 14 fastbreak points for the Fever.

Putting the ball in the basket was another issue for the Sparks. After scoring 20 points in the team’s only win of the season against the Washington Mystics, Sparks guard Lexie Brown scored five points on a 2 of 10 shooting from the field in 38

minutes of action. Forward Kia Nurse was just as off as Brown. Nurse, one of the more dependable scorers on the Sparks, connected on just 2 of 11 field goal attempts for four points. Nurse also went 0 for 7 on threepoint attempts for the ballgame.

As a team, the Sparks shot 42 percent from the field. The Fever had something to do with that.

All those open lane passes zipping through Indiana’s defense in the first half flipped to turnovers for Los Angeles. Some of these miscues were attributed to Indiana playing aggressive defense and Sparks’ players trying to force the issue when there were no open lanes to pass the ball. One of the major takeaways from the team’s third loss on the season is that Sparks have to figure out their identity. It was clear against Indiana, that the Sparks don’t have a real goto player they can depend on in the crunch. What’s also missing is leadership.

As Indiana was making its run in the second half, the Sparks didn’t have anyone to step up to stop the bleeding. That could be because the Sparks have a very young team and everyone is still trying to find their way.

The Sparks did have some bright spots against the Fever. Rickea Jacskon, the No.4 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA draft, had a productive night, going for 16 points in just 20 minutes of playing time. Dearica Hamby continued her steady play with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

And despite being in foul trouble, Cameron Brink tallied 15 points and 9 rebounds for the Sparks. But this night belonged to the Fever.

And amidst the hoopla around Clark, the Fever has a pretty decent team. Indiana center Aliyah Boston gave the Sparks fits with her inside the paint physicality. And with the Sparks so focused on locking up Clark, Kelsey Mitchell dropped 18 points on them.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER:

The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 800-605-2445 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site: www.servicelinkasap. com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case. Information about postponements

that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code, If you are an “eligible tenant buyer”, you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder”, you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call 800-605-2445 for information regarding the trustee’s sale, or visit this internet website https:// www.servicelinkasap.com, using the file number assigned to this case to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45

ANY INFORMATION OBTAINED WILL BE USED FOR THAT PURPOSE. “NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid on a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of the outstanding lien that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or

more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 844-477-7869, or visit this internet Web site www.stoxposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case T.S.# 82447. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.” For sales conducted after January 1, 2021: NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (844) 477-7869, or visit this internet website www.STOXPOSTING.com, using the file number assigned to this case 82447 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid; by remitting the funds and affidavit described in Section 2924m(c) of the Civil Code; so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase.

16th Annual Pink Pump Affair marks milestone for Special Needs Network

BEVERLY HILLS

The Special Needs Network (SNN) held its 16th Annual Pump Affair at the iconic Beverly Wilshire Hotel on May 19, 2024. The event turned out to be a success.

THE “Sweet Sixteen” event commemorated sixteen years of dedicated service to families affected by autism and other developmental disabilities. The awardwinning journalist Pat Harvey from CBS 2 News hosted the affair!

“This year’s Pink Pump Affair was a testament to the power of community and the impact we can have when we come together for a common cause,” said Areva Martin, President and Founder of Special Needs Network.

“The support we received will allow us to continue our mission of providing critical resources and advocating for the rights of individuals with disabilities. I am deeply grateful to our board members for their unwavering dedication and support in making this night unforgettable.”

The past year has highlighted an urgent need for increased support and advocacy, particularly underscored by the recent tragic events, including the loss of young Ryan Gainer.

These events have prompted essential conversations about the intersection of disability and societal systems, culminating in a pivotal Town Hall discussion and policy briefing in Washington, D.C. These discussions have reinforced the necessity of SNN’s mission and the critical impact of its services.

Honoring Excellence and Advocacy

The event honored four

exceptional individuals whose work and advocacy have made a significant impact on the lives of people with disabilities:

• Trailblazer Award: Tam

era MowryHousley, an Emmy

Awardwinning host, author, actress, producer, and entrepreneur, celebrated for her inspiring career and advocacy efforts.

• Game Changer Award:

Alva AdamsMason, Group Manager, Multicultural Business Alliance & Dealer Relations, Toyota Motor North America, recognized for her exemplary leadership in promoting diversity and inclusion.

• SelfAdvocate Award: Cristy Romero, is a dedicated SNN participant and an inspiring advocate for individuals with developmental disabilities.

• Areva Martin Everyday Advocate Award: Michael Jett, entrepreneur, and autism selfadvocate, was honored for his tireless efforts to increase supplier diversity at Kroger and his advocacy in the autism community.

A Night to Remember

The event included a lively auction by comedians Kym Whitley and Buddy Lewis, showcasing exclusive opportunities such as a VIP Padres Suite Experience and a culi

nary extravaganza with celebrity chef Kevin Bludso.

Attendees enjoyed an elegant gala dinner and were moved by SNN President and Founder Areva Martin, Esq’s remarks, and a special appearance by Jackee Harry. Furthermore, impactful testimonials emphasized the essential contribution of SNN’s services.

The recently highlighted Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities (C.A.D.D.) at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital has been prominently featured, representing a significant advancement in providing comprehensive resources and improving the ability to effectively cater to the needs of the South Los Angeles community.

This center serves as a symbol of hope, addressing the notable disparities in healthcare and educational service access, particularly within marginalized communities.
