PRESIDENT | CEO
What a way to start 2023! Meet the Elected Officials Legislative Breakfast was a sold-out crowd welcoming over 60 elected officials. This is always one of my favorite Chamber events as it brings together business, community and government for a productive meeting of the minds! Our elected officials shared a brief overview of their 2023 legislative agendas; as an advocate for business, we want to keep you informed on the issues that affect business at the local, state, and federal levels of government.
During the coming year, you will see a broad range of programs that will keep you updated on issues and relevant topics, such as February’s Policy Impact Series featuring Legislative Districts 12 & 13 delegations and Arizona’s top 2 political consultants, Chuck Coughlin and Chad Campbell. The Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion committee is strategically planning programs to educate our members and developing resources to share with the community. The Education & Workforce committee is planning educational workshops surrounding the partnerships between schools and booming workforce industries. And, the Women in Leadership committee is thinking outside of the box to bring innovative speakers to you!
Speaking of programs and events, the Ostrich Festival is right around the corner: March 16 – 19. We know everyone loves to attend, but there are so many ways you can be involved with sponsorship and volunteering. We have some fabulous music and entertainment lined up! As always, the rides are spectacular, the food is delicious, and the entertainment is out of this world.
As you can see, the Chandler Chamber’s programming for the coming year touches many facets of our businesses, our schools and community. We offer something for everyone and we hope that you will take advantage of our exciting programs and events that we design with our community in mind.
BOARD CHAIR
The excitement is starting to build toward the annual 33rd Chandler Ostrich Festival at Tumbleweed Park on March 16 – 19! Four days packed with high profile concerts, exciting rides, attractions and of course, fabulous festival food.

This is the Chandler Chamber’s signature event, created by the Chamber Board of Directors in 1988, that allows us to bring together our Chandler community and the Valley. The Ostrich Festival funds so many great programs that we offer here at the Chamber, but a large portion of that also goes back into the community to businesses, non-profits, and other vital activities.
The Chandler Chamber prides itself in encouraging innovation. In support of this, the Ostrich Festival offers many fun and educational attractions and shows throughout the weekend for the workforce of the future (our kids). A big hit among families are the hands-on science activities…yes, science can be fun!
So when you are rocking out to your favorite band, tasting your first fried Twinkie or carrying around the giant stuffed animal you just won, know that the Ostrich Festival is positively impacting Chandler. I look forward to seeing everyone out at the festival!
CHAMBER NON-PROFITSPOTLIGHT

Child Crisis Arizona creates strong families
Child Crisis Arizona has been helping our community’s most vulnerable children, youth and families for nearly five decades. In times of crisis, we are there to help. When no crisis threatens, we are there to strengthen families, build resiliency and prevent crisis situations.

Child Crisis Arizona’s mission is to provide children and youth in Arizona a safe environment, free from abuse and neglect, by creating strong and successful families.

We do this through prevention, intervention and education programs designed to support the thousands of children and families who may be at risk. All of our work centers on our vision of safe kids…strong families.

FROM THE MAYOR
Every year, mayors across the Valley showcase their cities and towns in their State of the City programs. The focus is almost always on the previous year’s wins and success stories. This year, we’re doing something a little different.
Chandler is rich in history, and our story of becoming a Community of Innovation began

well before the millennium. It is so important to know that history and to understand how the decisions of leaders before us paved the path we’re on today. In doing so, we can also make better decisions to pave a new path to the future.
With all that said, I would like to formally invite the Chandler Chamber and its members to the 2023 State of the City on Thursday, Feb. 16 at the Chandler Center for the Arts. This year’s program will take you Through the Decades, looking at Chandler’s past and how it helped set the stage for where we are today. And of course, there will still be plenty of 2022
success stories to tell. From economic development activity to strong fiscal management to new neighborhood engagement programs, there is a lot to cover.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. where attendees can take part in an incredible “Lobby Experience” with complimentary food and drink samples, infused with some decade-themed décor and flair. At 6:30 p.m., four incredible vocal and dance groups will perform to iconic 70s, 80s and 90s music, followed by my remarks.
Visit chandleraz.gov/ StateoftheCity for information and join me to celebrate our community.

Black History Month provides us an opportunity to honor and celebrate Black Americans’ contributions, accomplishments, and endeavors in our country. National Black History Month origins date back to 1915 when Carter G. Woodson and others from across the United States traveled to Washington D.C. to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the emancipation of Black people. Fast forward to 1986 when President Ronald Reagan issued Presidential Proclamation 5443, which proclaimed that “the foremost purpose of Black History Month is to make all Americans
aware of the struggle for freedom and equal opportunity.
It is also a time to celebrate the many achievements of blacks in every field, from science and the arts to politics and religion. It not only offers Black Americans an occasion to explore their heritage, but it also offers all Americans an occasion and opportunity to gain a fuller perspective of the contributions of Black Americans to our Nation.
The American experience and character can never be fully grasped until the knowledge of Black history assumes its rightful place in our schools and scholarship.
This year as we reflect on Black History Month the D.E.&I. Committee encourages you to reflect on and celebrate the numerous achievements and accomplishments of Black Americans and their contributions
to the American experience. Consider some of history’s most influential AfricanAmerican leaders in business and entrepreneurship such as:
• Annie Malone who in 1917 founded a commercial and educational business that specialized in African-American cosmetics and was recorded as the first African-American female millionaire;
• Arthur Gaston established the Citizens Savings and Loan Association and was one of the richest African-American men in the United States throughout the 1960s and a leading employer in Alabama;

• Madam C.J. Walker a self- made millionaire developed a special line of beauty and hair products for African-American women;
• John Johnson was the founder of Johnson Publishing company, which published Ebony and Jet Magazines and was the first African-American to appear on Forbes 400 in 1982;
• Reginald Lewis, a graduate of Harvard Law School, founded the venture capital firm TLC Group LP and in 1987 bought Beatrice International Foods –at that time the grocery store conglomerate was the largest Black owned and managed company with more than $1 billion in annual sales.
These are just a few examples of the contributions of Black Americans to business and entrepreneurship in our country.
The American experience and character can never be fully grasped until the knowledge of Black history assumes its rightful place in our schools and scholarship.”
All nominations for the following categories must be submitted to the Chamber no later than Friday, April 7, 2023.

The collective political experience and knowledge of the speakers at this meeting can not be understated, and those of you who like to be informed on policy will not want to miss this opportunity!

Five Star Review for local author Ebonie Fields
and understanding. Siblings Lenny and Leila are unhappy that their family will soon be moving from Jamaica to the United States.
The pair runs away together in search of a place to stay in their beloved country. On their journey, they are met by two magical birds that transport them to different cities and places in the United States. Colorful and detailed illustrations capture the joy and beauty Leila and Lenny experience throughout their travels.
Lenny and Leila and the Magical Hummingbirds by Ebonie P. Fields is a valuable message about the strength of family bonds as well as the good that can come from being open to new experiences. Often it is easiest to stay with what is comfortable, but through Leila and Lenny’s adventures, young children will see that new experiences can be enjoyable and exciting.
Lenny and Leila and the Magical Hummingbirds by Ebonie P. Fields is an insightful story of discovery

Along the way, they see many varied and vibrant places and meet interesting and kind people. Meaningful connections and discoveries are made and Leila and Lenny learn valuable lessons about the importance of family and the wonderful opportunities change can bring.
