Community Update

Happy August! I hope everyone had a relaxing July and time well-spent with family. I spent a wonderful couple weeks with mine in Michigan, and we had so much fun! As we get back into the swing of things, I want to highlight an exciting event coming up next month.

Mark your calendars for one of our most impactful and fun events of the year: the Chandler Chamber Charity Golf Tournament, happening September 26th.

This is one of my favorite events of the year because it’s a chance for our community to come together in support of the Chandler Chamber Community Foundation and its mission to provide scholarships for local students pursuing higher education at Chandler-Gilbert Community College.

Each year, this event brings out business leaders, community partners, and Chamber members for a day of friendly competition, networking, and benevolence. Sponsorships and team registrations help fund these scholarships, empowering the next generation of leaders in Chandler.

Whether you’re an avid golfer or just enjoy being part of something meaningful, we invite you to join us. Your participation helps open doors for local students and strengthens our entire community. I’ve been practicing my golf skills all year for this, so let’s tee up for a great cause and make this year’s tournament one to remember.

Why Career Fairs Still Matter in a Digital World

As hiring continues to evolve, many businesses are leaning heavily on digital tools to find talent. However, career fairs remain a valuable part of the recruitment strategy, especially when it comes to building long-term relationships and community visibility.

Career fairs offer something online listings cannot: human interaction. They allow companies to meet potential candidates face to face, share their values, and put a personality behind the brand. For job seekers, these events provide a chance to learn more about a company’s culture, expectations, and opportunities in a more personal setting.

From the business perspective, attending career fairs can increase recognition and trust within the community. A familiar name and presence can lead to better engagement from applicants and support a stronger employer reputation. Even brief conversations or interactions can create meaningful connections that might influence a candidate’s future decisions.

These events also provide insight into what job seekers are looking for, how your company is perceived, and how you compare to others in your industry. This feedback can be valuable for shaping future hiring strategies and improving your overall recruitment approach.

For companies interested in building a talent pipeline, career fairs should not be overlooked. Consistent participation can help cultivate interest in your organization and keep you connected to emerging talent.

The Chandler Chamber’s upcoming job fair offers local employers a chance to engage with our community in a meaningful way. To learn more about how to get involved, email Carly@chandlerchamber.com.

The Great Debate:

In-Office, Hybrid and Remote Work

Chandler’s Economic Future: A Collaborative Vision

As Mayor of Chandler, I’m proud to share how our city is taking bold steps to ensure long-term economic vitality and prosperity. The City Council approved an agreement last month with Arizona State University’s Seidman Research Institute and Thunderbird School to launch a 20-year Economic Vitality Study, funded by the Chandler Industrial Development Authority.

This forward-looking initiative is designed to identify emerging economic trends, guide industry diversification and ensure Chandler continues to attract top talent and investment. Thanks to collaboration across businesses sectors with academic experts, the study will culminate in early 2026 and feed directly into our General Plan update.

Chandler’s economy is currently faring exceptionally well. Unemployment is still below three percent and vacancies remain extremely low in the retail, industrial and medical office sectors. Our city continues to focus on talent development, industry diversification, infrastructure investment and sustainable growth driven by major investments from private sector companies and developers.

A few statistics that highlight Chandler’s economic resilience include:

• We rank 16th nationally and 1st in Arizona for Foreign Direct Investment.

• Over 27 percent of our workforce is in high-tech industries, well above the East Valley’s average of 15 percent and national average of 10 percent.

• Residents’ educational attainment of a bachelor’s degree or higher is 49 percent, which far exceeds state and national averages and creates opportunities that fuel household income and community prosperity.

Chandler stands at a pivotal moment to build upon a robust economic base and boldly embraces strategic planning that shapes our future. The synergy of the economic vitality study with ASU and our community-driven General Plan update could offer a transformative path.

The General Plan update, which is required every 10 years by state law, covers 17 essential topics, including land use, housing, transportation, open space, water and sustainability. These topics represent pillars of Chandler’s long-term growth as we balance job growth with housing supply and support mixed-use and infill projects with sustainable design, especially along employment corridors. We’re proud to have Chamber Board members Crystal Blackwell and Rick Heumann and Chamber President Terri Kimble serve on the General Plan Resident Advisory Committee.

Insights from Chamber members and the business community matter. Your feedback can shape zoning, development, transportation and amenities that will support Chandler’s next era of opportunity. Together, we’re building not just a stronger economy, but a thriving, inclusive city that sets Chandler apart as a national model of innovation, resilience and shared vision.

Welcome Chandler’s Acting City Manager

I’m John Pombier, and I’m honored to introduce myself to Chandler’s dynamic business community. I thank Terri Kimble and the Chandler Chamber of Commerce for the warm welcome and for your tireless efforts to create an environment where entrepreneurs and companies can thrive.

The partnership between the city and the Chamber is essential to build the strong, collaborative business climate that defines Chandler. From our diverse workforce development programs and number of companies expanding their footprint here, Chandler is advancing in all the right ways.

Chandler has earned a national reputation for innovation and opportunity, not by chance, but through long-range planning, smart investment and meaningful collaboration. I want to foster an open dialogue with the business community to hear about the ways we can continue to support the growth and prosperity of local businesses. Likewise, I want to ensure the business community is aware of and engaged in the key issues facing our city.

We continue to invest in what’s next through planning workshops to update our General Plan and the upcoming bond election reflecting community priorities. We’ve launched a strategic partnership with Arizona State University to produce a report on Chandler’s long-term economic vitality. With the City Council adopting a property tax rate reduction for the tenth straight year, we remain focused on fiscal responsibility while supporting growth.

For more than 50 years, Chandler has embraced change and turned ideas into action. Today, our high-tech manufacturing, aerospace, bioscience and advanced software sectors are driving the innovation economy. I’m excited to help accelerate that momentum and ensure Chandler continues to be a place where people and businesses want to grow, succeed and lead. I look forward to working with you, our business community, to shape that future together.
