you remember that 2+2:4?

wE LIKE to think our periodic articles on business basics are among the most valuable features we present. Some stick their noses up at this, figuring that as industry veterans they are somehow beyond all this elementary stuff. We think that's a mistake.

An article in this issue's special section on hardwood deals with the a-b-c's of how to figure hardwood board measurement. It is written by longtime contributing editor Gage McKinney. For someone unfamiliar with the process, it's solid gold.

Even if these calculations are old stuffto you, we still urge you to review your basics whenever the opportunity is presented. You are likely to learn that some things are not quite as you recall. Points have somehow been forgotten. Unless we are blessed with a never failing memory,

time takes its toll on what we think we have in our heads.

Whether you're talking merchandising, marketing, sales, management or wood products, a learning and re-learning of the basics in all phases of business is time wellspent. While two plus two still equals four, some truths occasionally change or are modified by the rapid pace of development in our frenzied business world.

When a commercial enterprise fails and the post mortem begins, someone will point out sooner or later that fundamental operating and management rules had been ignored or given short shrift.

For those enamored with complexity, high tech and sophistication, we suggest a brief return to the school house. It may be the best investment of time you can make.

Hardwood dimension lumber: a softwood shortages answer?

lJ IGHER prices, shortages, empty yardsthese I I specters haunt the wood products industry as it sees more and more trees and harvests locked up with environmental rulings and laws.

However, if the threatened shortage of softwood structural lumber becomes reality, there are readily available hardwood species suitable for use as economically competitive dimensional lumber produ.cts.

Recent research has resolved many of the technical problems of manufacturing dimension lumber flrom hardwoods. A saw, dry and rip (SOR) process developed by the Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, Wi., eliminates the excessive warp and twist usually associated with the drying of hardwood structural lumber.

In addition, the American Lumber Standards Committee has approved structural grading rule descriptions and allowable design stresses for four lower density hardwood species (red alder, cottonwood, aspen and yellow poplar) and several higher density hardwood species or species groups (red maple, mixed maple, beech-birchhickory, mixed oak, red oak, northern red oak and white oak).

Simply put, the SDR process has three steps: (l) parallel cuts of wide board flitches; (2) drying the flitches; (3) ripping out dimension materiai in the sizes needed. The process, according to Robert R. Maeglin, one of the developers, produces hardwood lumber that is "straighter and more stable." Another advantage of working with hardwood dimension is the lack of splinters, he adds.

The process could make hardwood structural lumber a standard commodity and relieve the pressure on the diminishing softwood resources in the west. Eastern states already grow a good supply of low to medium density hardwoods suitable for structural lumber. These species, including yellow poplar, aspen, eastern cottonwood, sycamore, red alder, black guin, paper birch, black willow, basswood, soft maple, sweet gum and black cottonwood, are common in many states.

Supplies of lower quality hardwoods not suitable for high value products such as furniture or cabinets are abundant. Processed with the SDR method, these lower quality hardwoods closely resemble the western soft-

woods and southern pine in characteristics. Their working properties and densities make them equally suitable for structural lumber.

Despite the promising research and approved grading rules, structurally graded hardwoods are not readily available in the market at present. Production has been discouraged by the economic considerations of educating consumers to the product, competition with softwood lumber, pricing and profit margins.

Mill owners will be examining all variables of economic feasibility such as log and stumpage prices, yields and product values, the costs of processing hardwoods and capital investments for conversion of existing facilities to hardwood production or building a new mill specifically for producing hardwood dimension lumber.

The Forest Products Laboratory is conducting research to evaluate the yield of machine stress rated and visually graded dimension lumber from red oak logs versus alternative uses for these logs. This information will be available to help mills select the most profitable alternative for processing hardwood logs.

Teak plentiful despite distorted claims of preseruationists

E! ADICAL preservationists, who

Jl prefer to call themselves environmentalists, are a threat to those who depend on logging, sawmilling, manufacturing and the sale of tropical timbers for a livelihood.

A case in point: they have singled out teak as an endangered species and have begun a crusade to discourage its use. They are making false claims that teak is threatened by commercial exploitation and not being properly preserved on a sustainable basis.

In Myanmar (formerly known as Burma), where the world's best quality and largest reserves of the precious wood are found, the teak growing area covers 66,000 sq. miles, roughly equivalent to the entire land mass of the six New England states combined. The second major source of teak is Indonesia. About half of the U.S. teak imports are of Myanmar origin. Indonesia accounts for nearly 40% with the small balance coming from scattered plantations of mostly Burma teak taken

by early traders in seedling form to a dozen or so South and Central American, African and island nations.

In 1875, the Burma Selection System was established. A relatively simple, but effective forest management technique, this selects for extraction mature trees of a specified diameter within a certain area on a grid map of the country. Only those trees are harvested. Each particular area on the grid map is logged at 30 year intervals. Since it takes 90 years for a teak tree to reach full maturitv.

growing roughly one foot in diameter during each 30 year period, the system achieves the continuous extraction of only mature trees. In addition to this perpetuation of naturally grown teak, there is another government program under which plantations of teak are continuously and systematically planted at the rate of about 30,000 acres per annum.

Monitoring has been enhanced during the last decade by sophisticated data collection and analysis made possible by aerial and satellite photographs and computers through the technical and financial assistance of the United Nations Development Program.

Twenty years ago, there were 44.94 million teak trees in naturally growing stands in what was then called Burma. Today that number has grown to 56.68 million, a260/o increase in both numbers and cubic volume since the continuous extraction of only the mature trees provides a constant average content per tree. Even more impressive, there has been an almost three-fold increase in numbers of teak trees on government managed plantations, from 67.39 million trees in 1970 to 191.78 million today. So, according to a recent publication from that

country, "The 130 year technical experiences of the Forest Department indicate that no environmental impacts will be felt and Burma's [sic] forests will be managed forever."

Turning to Indonesia, plantations of teak seedlings were planted more than a century ago during Dutch colonization. As the mature trees in these plantations have been harvested in recent years, new seedlings have been planted, in keeping with the policies of sustained yield forest management. This policy of harvesting no more timber than is being replenished with new growth is being

r r ARDWOOD floors are "in" for JI homes. Flip through any consumer home magazine, check out any model home or interior design studio, ask anyone who is building or remodeling homes. Hardwood is back.

Consumers want hardwood, but how does a home center or lumber dealer get them to buy it from him instead of the guy down the street, especially the one with a "flooring" store?

First, one dealer emphasizes, let shoppers know you have hardwood. Advertise in the yellow pages, the newspaper and circulars. Distribute literature. Display banners and color photos of hardwood applications. Maintain knockout displays. Participate in trade shows and events such as the Parade of Homes.

Establish the concept that you have everyday savings and in-stock merchandise, stresses a manager. He maintains a flooring aisle of approximately 7,000 sq. ft. emphasized with a huge display and a 25 ft. rack of products. A second dealer who also stocks lots ofproduct adds, "There's just something about a big pile of wood that punches the customer's buttons. That bulk on the floor lets them feel confident that we're serious about hardwood flooring."

Almost every dealer agrees impressive displays attract customers. One store constructed an elevated display in a high tra{Iic area. Another uses spotlights to highlight the beauty of various hardwoods on display.

One independent creates exciting visuals using hardwood. Mini rooms set up throughout the store display various products including hardwood flooring. Strip and plank floors are

carried on with an almost religious fervor to ensure that Indonesia's claim of "forests forever" is no mere slogan. The fifth most populous nation on earth, the government long ago established and continues to keep as a top priority the wise utilization of its natural resources. It does so with a totally integrated and sophisticated forestry program which is a model for the world.

It is hard to characterize as anything but ill informed and irresponsible the radical preservationists' campaign to discourage the importation and use of teak. They

should be promoting the use of teak and other properly protected rain forest timber around the world. During a recent Smithsonian Institution Conference on tropical forestry, it was made clear that if the merchantability of timber is denied, and thus its economic value, a logical result is the conversion of the land by its inhabitants toa more valuable economic use such as farm or grazing land.

To preserve our precious timber resources, we must use them - but wisely.

Hardwood flooring promotions that work

shown in kitchen, office, dining room and living room settings. All emphasize the versatility of hardwood flooring.

"The displays help the customer visualize the product as it might look in their home," explains the store manager. "This helps our sales quite a bit, especially on big ticket items. It boosts add-on sales, too. Someone comes in to buy cabinets and decides that he has to have a hardwood floor to go with them."

Confident sales people equipped to sell hardwood flooring aggressively are claimed as secret weapons by many dealers. One store maintains a training program for all its employees plus one expert to handle unusual situations. Another conducts an ongoing training program for its hardwood flooring sales staff.

Consumer education is stressed as another constant necessary for successful hardwood flooring sales. One store has frequent hardwood flooring clinics, advertising them in the newspaper as well as asking the editor for a news story, both giving the dates and details. This store also participates in the local Parade of Homes and other community projects.

A small home center chain features hardwood flooring periodically on its weekly home improvement radio talk show. They invite a guest

host who is one of their suppliers to discuss product selection and installation.

A decorator asked to hold a seminar discussing the possibilities of hardwood flooring in home design was popular at a suburban store. This was followed by a d-i-y installation clinic the next week.

Dealers are divided on the question of installation. Some sell a high percentage of their hardwood flooring to contractors and remodelers and don't want to become involved in installation. Others regularly hold d-i-y installation clinics. Some loan out installation videos and a few offer free use of installation tools. Some recommend installers while others only maintain a list.

Show it. Tell it. Sell it. Dealers who move a lot of hardwood flooring agree that by following these precepts consistently they can sell more hardwood flooring than the guy down the street.

6 OFTWOOD lunrber is sawn to 9 dinrensional sizes1 x 12,2 x 4, and so forth - which nrakes nteasuring pine or fir or redwood relatively easy. Hardwoods, on the other hand, are sawn in standard thicknesses but in randonr widths and lengths. This is so the nranufacturer can get as nruch lunrber as possible out of each log.

This "randonr" quality of hardwood lunrber nrakes its nreasurenrent conrplicated and, to son'le consunrers, even nrystifying. "What's a board foot?," custon'lers have asked nre. "What are the hieroglyphics on that stick?" "What are you charging nre for?"

All good questions. And nrost hardwood dealers do their best to answer thenr and dispel any confusion. So if you're not sure how the lunrber you buy is being nreasured, or exactly what you're paying for, ask questions.

The answer to most questions is an explanation of the "board foot." It's a cubic unit of nleasure equal to 144 cubic inches, or 1" x 12" x 12". It's also a unit based on rough sawn

Speaking board feet

(unplaned) lunrber. Even when hardwood lunrber is planed, it is still nreasured as if it were rough fronr the sawnrill, so a board slightly nrore than 3/4" thick is sold as l" stock. The way to think of this is that it takes 1" to net3/4" (actually 25/32" in nrany cases).

The easiest way to figure board footage is to calculate the nunrber of square feet on the surface ofa board, and then multiply that by the nunrber of rough inches thick. Here's the fornrula:

Thickness x Width (inches) x Length (feer), divided by 12 : Surface Footage

Surface Footage x thickness in Rough Inches

: Board Footage

For exanrple: l"x12"xl':Iboardfoot

2"x6"xl':lboardfoot

And further: l"x8"x6':4boardfeet

2" x 6" x 12' : 12 board feet

Using this fornrula and a tape nreasure you can calculate footage as quickly as a hardwood clerk. Your hardwood supplier will use a tally stick, a flexible yardstick of hickory, to nrake the sanre calculation, but the results should be the sanre.

If this still seents conrplicated you can take conrfort that sonre hardwood dealers also sell hardwoods by the lineal foot. This stock will be surfaced on four sides (S4S) so the price will include sonte premiunr for nrachining. Many users, including furniture plants and other nranufacturing concerns, feel it's worth the extra price.

Hardwoods less than 1" thick - l/2" and 3/8" are conrnron thicknesses - are sold by the square foot and at a price less than the cost of 1" nraterial. Occasionally exotic woods, which are often sold in billets as well as snrall chunks and unusual sizes, are sold by weight, a practice that dates back to the days when British fi rnrs donrinated inrported lunrber.

If you're still wondering about tally sticks, I can tell you fronr nry own experience that they are extrenrely accurate. When I was ntanaging a hardwood distribution yard in Los Angeles, Ca., we were visited by

inspectors front the state departntent of weights and nreasures. They were suspicious of our standard hardwood tally sticks.

The inspectors had us nteasure a unit of hardwood with a tally stick, which took 30 nrinutes or so. They then spent the rest of the day renreasuring the sanre unit using tape nreasures and a pocket calculator. (We loaned thenr an experienced lunrber handler or it would have taken even longer.) They rounded their figures to the nearest quarter inch! When all their calculations were finally done, their tally was alnrost identical to ours.

Story at a Glane

Valuable primer for mastering hardwood measutements... formula for calculating board feet.. basics of getting what you pay for.

For consunrers paying retail prices a dealer nray, depending on conrpany policy, round the nreasurenrent offto the nearest half-foot. For a wholesale custonrer buying only a board or two to fill a specific order, the tally will be rounded off to the nearest foot. Wholesale customers can expect their luntber to be tallied in strict accord with the rules of the National Hardwood Lunrber Association. Your hardwood supplier can acquaint you with these rules.

In whatever fornr you buy hardwoods, you should always understand how they are tallied. As the buyer you have every right to know, and your hardwood supplier will want to nrake sure you do. McKinney is a contributing editor who has considerdble knowledge qf hardwoods -editor.

Ohhh, my aching back

Fr ACK INJURIES are the most El tiequ.nt and costly ol work related injuries, especially in a lumber yard or home center.

About 250/o of all Workers Compensation claims are back related and account for between 35% and 40% of all Workers Comp costs.

Story at a Glance

Ways tocut insurance claims for back injuries. hiring and training methods. Preventive exercise and belts. . . Posters and reminders can reinforce good lifting habits.

Prevention of back injuries and subsequent insurance claims should begin at the time of hiring. Employees should be made aware through the use of a job description of the specific duties and requirements of the position including the amount of lifting involved. The job application should require information about any physical condition affecting the performance of the duties outlined in the job description. In addition, pre-employment medical examinations should be used to determine if the applicant is physically qualified for the position.

The second phase of back injurY prevention begins with orientation to the job. Employees must be trained in all functions of the job including potential hazards such as lifting. The personnel department after completing the responsibility of proper selection should continue to train and counsel employees with safetY in mind.

Material handling techniques should include instruction in proper

lifting. Posters illustrating proper methods should be displayed in the lunch room, by the time clock and near the job site. Company newsletters or bulletins should periodically carry information about correct lifting habits. Employees should be observed regularly in the practice of proper lifting techniques. If necessary, lifting training sessions should be scheduled with an emphasis on eliminating strains and sprains.

Some companies reinforce lifting training by providing all employees required to do lifting with special back belts or vests. These devices support the back and lessen the possibility of back strain. Stretching exercises done as a group with a leader before beginning work also lessen the possibility of back injuries.

Available statistics on back injuries support the concern of lumberyard and home center managers. Males between the ages of 25 and 34 have 330/o of the reported back injuries. The most common causes are sudden body movement or motion, a too bulky object, or frequent lifting on the day of the injury.

In evaluating the potential for back injuries in an operation, insurance companies use a list of l0 factors. A manager can also use them to judge conditions at his companY. Items considered are maximum weight of objects lifted, size and configuration, frequency of the lift, height and distance of the lift, number of workers involved, age and length of employment of workers, comparison of workers' wages to Workers Compensation rates, extent of material handling devices in use, lift training provided and availability of light duty work.

Diligence is required to reduce or eliminate back injury claims, but it is possible to do so. Establishing policies and maintaining control and supervision from the time of pre-hiring interviews is important.

Why har

6 ROFIT! Hardwood specialty f products like mouldings and millwork have the potentialto be big money makers for home centers and lumber dealers.

Up to now, d-i-yers, builders and architects have sometimes shied away from hardwood millwork on mid-level building and remodeling projects because of cost. Of course, cost is relative to value and today the consumer appears willing to spend a few extra cents per linear foot if he or she thinks there is some benefit.

Very little attention has been paid to promoting solid hardwood specialty projects. Despite the fact that the four major product lines (boards, panels, moulding, flooring) are estimated to represent nearly $l billion in annual retail sales, they have been ignored. Regardless, the solid hardwood specialty products segment of the market is growing dramatically.

Now, however, the Hardwood Manufacturers Association has developed a promotion program for specialty products much like the successful campaigns it created and now manages for the solid hardwood furniture and kitchen cabinet industries. HMA's campaign to enhance consumer awareness of solid hardwood furniture, cabinetry and now millwork, involves a 3/4 million dollar investment by the hardwood lumber industry. This investment pays for the development of timely marketing communications and point-of-purchase support for manuflacturers and dealers. The furniture and cabinet campaigns are built around the "Solid Hardwood From

14 The Merchant Magazine

rood millwork has profit potential

the USA" trademark. It appears on hang tags, in brochures, on television commercials and other promotional items.

A similar type of logo has been created for solid hardwood specialty products. The identification mark aims to create instant recognition with a perception of quality on behalf of consumers.

The solid hardwood millwork program includes a number of marketing tools. A new hardwood millwork sales brochure is targeted at the average home remodeler and builder. Other point-of-purchase materials, including a "seasonal" hardwood aisle-ender, are also being developed.

And the association specializes in consumer publicity. Thanks to our involvement in home remodeling and construction projects, HMA has generated publicity in Country Living, Family Circle and I00l Home ldeas, just to name a few home furnishings magazines. Several editors have already contacted us for ideas on small-scale home remodeling projects featuring hardwoods. kitchen & bath displays Gooking up effective

Story at a Glance

Recipe for kitchen and bath pro- jectselling... ideas to create vignettes and full displays that will attract attention and help make sales.

A LINEUP of bath vanities or a frl catalog of kitchen cabinetry is usirally not enough to excite many customers into a major remodeling. But designing a classy, detailed display might.

Here's the recipe for heating up kitchen and bath sales: MLY All IngredientsShowcase

the whole project, not just the cabinets. Do-it-yourselfers spend much more on related items than they do on cabinets in an average bath remodeling, and a nearly equal amount in redoing the kitchen, according to the National Kitchen & Bath Association.

Highlight appliances, fixtures, fittings, floor and wall coverings, and window materials. You'll attract customers to the display and sell a bigger ticket project.

Add Spice - Adding decorative accessories to the display helps customers better imagine that this kitchen or bath could be theirs. Add towels, plants, even a bar of soap to your bath scene. Glasses, bowls, cans and a rolling pin can help spice up the kitchen.

Heat - Making the vignette's lighting brighter than that of the rest of the store willdraw attention to the area. Different lights can warm up the scene or make it look more realistic. Tungsten halogen bulbs can provide special accents within the display itself.

Stlr - Change your displays every so often, perhaps once every six months. After a while your once exciting showcases will begin to look stale, especially to regular customers and as styles change.

Let Stand - Obviously, the splashier, more spacious productions will attract more attention. But the average retailer is dogged by severe space constraints. Effective displays, though, can be constructed in limited space.

Set vignettes into sections of rack storage systems. Build a second story display, which can be seen clearly from below if the display is shallow and the aisle wide. Intersperse full displays with smaller vignettes. Utilize compact sample displays offered by many manufacturers.

Full displays show the public that you are an expert in kitchens and baths. When they're ready to remodel, they'll think of you.

Both timber and environmentalist groups criticized the stop gap plan presented by the White House task force to solve the problem of protecting both the northern spotted owl and timber iobs.

The task force appointed by President Bush in June after the owl was declared a threatened species proposed that Congress reduce timber harvests next year on national forests in the Pacific Northwest, including Northern California, and convene a high level committee to come up with a long term strategy for the owl. Harvesting held to l4o/o lower than this year's cut would be significantly higher than the level recommended by a team of federal scientists in April.

"This is not a perfect answer because a perfect answer does not exist," Agriculture Secretary Clayton Yeutter and Interior Secretary Manuel Lujan said in a joint statement. "But it is the beginning of a good balance to protect our heritage, while minimizing economic dislocation in timber deoendent communities."

Interests of the owl are still being put above those of the timber workers and their families, the industry countered. "We are extremely disappointed that the task force has chosen to adopt a plan that has the potential to devastate the livelihoods of literally thousands of Californians," said Bill Dennison, president of the Timber Association of California. "The task force was given three months to develop a balanced solution and it has failed."

Sierra Club field director Bruce Hamilton's response was that the task force had "ducked all the hard decisions and laid out a road map leading to the destruction of the ancient forests and the extinction of the spotted owl."

Mountain States Lumber & Building Material Dealers Association's 1990-91 Supplier Directory and Product Guide is available for retail dealer and associate members.

Staff associate Geri Bagby said the 140 page guide lists 158 suppliers. In the first section, wholesalers, manufacturers and other suppliers are listed alphabetically. This section includes addresses, telephone and FAX numbers. The second section lists in alphabetical order key products and services used by retail lumber dealers.

Members will receive a free guide by mail. Additional copies are available for $25 to members and $45 to nonmembers.

The association's l00th anniversary will be kicked off in conjunction with the 74th National Lumber & Building Material Dealers Association convention at

the Broadmoor Hotel, Colorado Springs, Co., Nov. 1-4.

The centennial observance will include the grand opening celebration on Nov. I and breakfast with keynote speaker Michael LeBoeuf on Nov. 4. Approximately 550 people are expected to attend the celebration which will follow a western jamboree theme and honor 100 years of volunteerism in the retail lumber industry.

Western Building Material Association is reminding its dealers of several rulings which have a direct effect on their business.

ll a store uses radio as an "on-hold" device for the phone system, it could end up costing a lot of moneyunless it has a license to do so. Using a radio station in

this manner without a license is an infringement on copyright laws. And there are disadvantages to using a local radio station. For instance, a customer may have to listen to a competitor's commercial while holding for lurther assistance from a store. There are documented cases of this happening.

Alternatives include using pre-recorded music or recording the store's own message. With a personal message, a store can tell customers about its services, new products or special sales promotions. Callers stay on the line l7%r longer with a "message on-hold," according to research.

As a result ofthe repeal ofSection 89, company-paid physical examinations are once again a tax free benefit. Medical plans revert to the discrimination test effective before Section 89 was enacted. The benefit is now tax free even if provided only to highly paid employees. ln another developmenl, Congress is considering a bill that would increase the 1990 FUTA base ol $7,000 by $1,000 each year to a maximum taxable wage base of $10,000 in 1993. Also under consideration is a measure to eliminate the .2(h surtax.

One of the features of the Workers' Compensation Reform Act of 1989 is the creation of the Workers' Compensation Administration Revolving Fund. The Reform Act of 1989 made several provisions which purport to speed up the resolution of claims, including the reorganization and increased functioning of the Division of Workers' Compensation.

The WCA surcharge requires all insurers to collect an assessment from their insured to help defray the adminis-

Work Smarter, Not Harder

Although every materials handling manager knows productivity could be improved by working smarter, in the face of daily deadlines and countless problems, most are forced to substitute working harder.

lmproving materials handling productivity shouldn't be hard work. "Working smarter is really nothing more than anticipating problems and planning in advance," explains Paul Laroia, general manager, parts & service operations, Hyster Co. "lt's relatively easy to reduce downtime, lower repair costs and increase efficiency if you know what to do."

He suggests:

(l) Anticipate downtime and schedule periodic maintenance.

(2) Plan ahead to save time locating parts, establish a relationship with a reliable source.

(3) Help operators work smarter by providing training.

(4) Maximize equipment productivity with special attachments and options such as sideshift carriages, heavy duty alternators, high temperature shutoffs.

(5) Seek advice from experts.

Panelized Homes On The Rise

Despite declines in manufactured homes, factorybuilt housing is rising with the steady growth of modular and panelized houses, according to a Frost & Sullivan report.

Factory-built housing is forecast to climb from 1989's $13.8 billion to over $20.94 billion in 1995. Factory-built as opposed to site-built homes will rise from 32.80/o of all homes constructed in the U.S. to 370/o by 1995.

In 1989 61,000 modules were produced, totalling $3.47 billion, and are expected to hit 121,000 at $9.24 billion in 1995. Panelized houses, which basically are enormous kits, totalled nearly 126,000 units at $4.4 billion in 1989 and are headed for $7.44 billion by 1995.

Big growth is predicted for manufacturer-builders who manufacture mainly for their own consumption and especially panelizing specialists, who sell their products to builder-dealers or individuals.

Other predictions include more use of plastics and automated techniques such as those being used successfully in Sweden and Japan. "lt is not impossible that imported housing will follow the same growth pattern as imported cars, and for many of the same reasons," the report said.

Delinquencies Rate Falls

Delinquency rates on mortgages in the first quarter of 1990 fell to 4.410/0, their lowest level in more than a decade, reports the Mortgage Bankers Association of America.

The first quarter rate was also down sharply from the 1989 fourth quarter rate of 4.960/0. The sharpest drop was in loan payments 30 days late.

TIMBER SIZER

Sumwood/Buchanan Venture

After 37 years in the hardwood industry, Jack Buchanan, Buchanan Hardwood, Inc., Long Beach, Ca., has semi-retired and turned the business over to his son John.

Jack entered the lumber trade in 1953 with Mathews Hardwood, Seattle, Wa. Seven years later he moved

south to join Brush Industrial Lumber, Montebello, Ca. Over the next 20 years he worked for Sand Door and Plywood, Toal Lumber and Brady Hardwood before founding Buchanan Hardwoods in 1981.

John, who has 13 years experience in the hardwood business, purchased Buchanan Hardwood from his father with the help of Sumwood, Inc., Palos Verdes, Ca. Combining the domestic stock of Buchanan with Sumwoods' imported hardwoods, the two companies stock hard to find items along with a wide selection of Asian, African and Central/South American hardwoods. Both sell only to wholesalers.

Buchanan will continue to represent Holmes & Co., Columbia City, In., and Robinson Lumber Co., New Orleans, La., in selling domestic woods.

John will supervise the Long Beach operation assisted by Brenda Sanfilippo and Doug and Mike Reynolds. Jack Buchanan will sell part time for both companies. Jim Summerlin and Betty Jeniye handle direct import inquiries at the Palos Verdes ofl'ice of Sumwood.

Short timber supply hurts housing

Poorly managed timber resources will result in the loss of affordable housing for more than 650,000 families over the next decade.

Lawrence C. Hart, chairman and president of Fibreboard Corp., Concord, Ca., representing the American Forest Resource Alliance, told the Federal Advisory Commission on Regulatory Barriers to Affordable Housing meeting in San Francisco, Ca., Sept. 2: "lt's not that the U.S. is running out of timber. The opposite is true - each year we grow more than we harvest - some 3lo/o more. Yet, under the specter of environmental litigation over spotted owls, national forest planning and old growth harvesting, the volume of timber available for sale has been reduced to a trickle. Through better management of the natural resources under its care, the federal government and its regulatory agency, the U.S. Forest Service, can create a stable supply of timber."

Hart continued, "Since wood is the major material used in construction of new homes and in remodeling of existing homes, the cost of wood products plays an important role in the affordability equation. As many as 65,600 families will be priced out of the housing market annually as a result of increases in the cost of wood products."

Hart emphasized that while regulations should respect environmental needs, they should also be balanced with, and not determined at the expense of, people and their communities. He said, "l do not want to suggest that current federal policies, such as the Endangered Species Act, fail to play a useful, indeed very important, role in protecting the environment. However, the commission could and should address the need for a more sensitive implementation of this act by considering the economic plight of affected communities and the nation's need for affordable housing, while also protecting the spotted owl."

"The decline in available timber in the Pacific Northwest alone has seriously reduced the number of new homes built. The region supplies more than one-third of all lumber produced in the U.S., which could build more than 270,000 homes with the volume of wood withdrawn from

renewable timber management last year. Pending proposals for more nouse forests would remove enough wood to build millions of homes."

Addressing industry concerns regarding three initiatives scheduled for the November ballot in California, he said, "All three of the propositions facing the voters will reduce timber harvesting in the state, either to a large or lesser degree. Of the three, Proposition 138

(Californians for New Foresty) is by far the most reasonable, but it will still have some impact."

Hart also cited the l5 years of administrative and legal delays in implementing the National Forest Management Act (NFMA) of 1976 which have seriously reduced the timber supply. Hart and 169 industry, labor and community groups are strongly supporting pending legislation (5.2762 and H.R.5094) which will allow the NFMA forest plans to be implemented and result in the harvesting of more timber.

Featured speaker will be Harry Merlo, president and chief executive officer of Louisiana-Pacific. "Any time Merlo speaks is memorable, but imagine what he can say about the future of the lumber industry only a few days after California's election, when we will know how the various propositions fared at the polling place," Wayne Gardner says. "Exciting times are ahead and Merlo is just the man to outline them for us.tt

Hardwood for remodeling

EMODELING expenditures reached more than $100 billion last year with kitchens leading the way as the most remodeled room in a house.

Story at a Glance

Dealers should suggest solid hardwoods for kitchen remodeling. .. beautiful, durable woods please customers. give store a share of growing market.

Although hardwood can be used extensively in remodeling any part of a home, kitchen cabinets, counters and flooring needs can be well satisfied by tough, yet handsome, hardwoods. The Hardwood Manufacturers Association proved this in the 1989 Nashville ( Tn. ) Designer's Show House.

Working with an award winning kitchen designer, they used quantities of hardwood to update the kitchen of a 62 year old home. Solid oak countertops were in-

stalled with cherry cabinets. Strip oak flooring was used underfoot and basswood shutters on the windows.

Hardwood can be recommended for the kitchen with confidence today, both the designer and HMA stressed. Solid oak countertops are treated with a special finish that repels everything from glass rings to nail polish remover. Oak strip flooring has a protective finish that resists spills and everyday soil. Hardwood cabinets are both practical and beautiful.

C0UI|TERT0PS are solid oak manufactured with an application ot/ Durakryl 102 to improve the durability characteristics of the wood. The new finish protects solid hardwood countertops from spills and everyday mishaps.

All-Coast Buys Kaibab Denver

Kaibab Industries, Phoenix, Az.. and All-Coast Forest Products, Inc., Chino, Ca., have signed a letter of intent for the sale of Kaibab's Denver, Co., building material distribution center to All-Coast. Details of the transaction were not disclosed. However, they are aiming for a late October closing.

The operation employs 60 people on a 15 acre site in Sheridan, a Denver suburb. Started in 1970, it distributes specialty building products in Colorado and the five state surrounding area.

All-Coast, a privately owned company with sales exceeding $60,000,000, is the largest independent building material distributor in California. Its Chino facility contains extensive remanufacturing capabilities and

current plans for Denver involve similar facilities there. Other products and services will be added.

In commenting on the proposed acquisition, Daryl Bond, All-Coast president, said he views Denver as a logical first extension of its geographic reach beyond the West coast. "The Denver trade region has good potential for growth over the next five years and the excellent quality of both the facility and the people will give us a running start to capitalize on this growth."

Kaibab president Bruce Whiting said the Denver division had been consistently profitable over the years but did not fit Kaibab's long-range intent to concentrate on its core business as a lumber producer, metal fabricator and distributor of gasoline and lubricants.

Bankrupt Diamond Liquidating

Diamond Lumber Inc., North Highlands, Ca., and its holding company have reentered bankruptcy and will liquidate their 2l lumberyards, according to chairman and c.e.o. Bernard Kritzer.

BMC West, Boise, Id., plans to buy the Fresno, Ca., yard, while investors group Craig, Jacobs & Walker, Dallas, Tx., is negotiating to buy the other 14 central and northern California outlets; Reno, Nv., yard, and, with a second group, five New England locations, said Kritzer.

Diamond and holding firm

Michigan General first filed for Chapter I I bankruptcy protection in 1987, emerging a year later with an insurmountable debt. said their attorney.

HWI To Build Oregon DC

Hardware Wholesalers, Inc. was scheduled to decide between Woodburn and Albany, Or., on Sept. 28, as the new location for its west coast distribution center.

Frank Tiwari, Woodburn public works director, was confident that a 100 acre site along Highway 214 in west Woodburn would be their choice.

To help HWI make a decision about the $10 million industrial development, Woodburn city council agreed to seek grant money to help pay for more than $1.166 million in street, water and sewer improvements for the project.

Hardware Wholesalers will pay $375,000 for water, sewer and street improvements. Adjacent property owners will pay $155,000 and the city $641,000 including $411,000 of grants from the Oregon Highway Division and Department of Economic Development. Water and sewer lines in the area are already due for replacement and will be done in conjunction withthe development. oflicials said.

Formation of a related but separately funded corporation of manufacturers of glued engineered wood products and systems, such as glulams and l-beams, has been authorized by the American Plywood Association's board of trustees.

The new nonprofit organization will provide a full range of services to members, including product promotion, product and systems research, and quality auditing. Qualified products and systems will be promoted under a newly established American Plywood Association-Engineered Wood Systems (APA-EWS) trademark.

"The expansion of APA services

to cover glued wood products and systems is viewed by the board of trustees as an activity capable ofcontributing significantly to the faster growth of structural panel markets," said board chairman and Simpson Timber Co. president Thomas R. Ingham, Jr. "The board recognizes APA as a logical organization to assist in creating that growth, based on its experience and acknowledged performance."

APA is proceeding with a sixmonth implementation plan that targets Jan. l, 1991, as an official launch date. Several companies have already made commitments to the new program.

Annual Forest Products Week

Wood product dealers are being urged to celebrate National Forest Products Week, Oct. 2l-27, with community events and media tours.

The theme is "Wise Use of America's Forests." The American Forest Foundation of the American Forest Council, 1250 Connecticut Ave., N.W., Suite 320, Washington, D.C. 20036, has a free kit available. This package includes sample news releases, stories and a governor's proclamation draft as well as ideas for ads, several informative brochures and an order form for additional materials.

National Forest Products Week aims to remind people of the importance of the forest and its products in everyday life. It also calls attention to the growing need for productive and healthy forests to meet the increasing demand for wood products in both the U.S. and the world. In America alone, the average person

Vinyl Siding Sales Glimb

Vinyl siding for new home construction will continue to increase its share of siding sales because of competitive pricing and specialty profiles.

"During the last two years, vinyl siding has made tremendous inroads into the new home construction market," said Howard E. Hartsfield, national sales and marketing manager of Reynolds Metals Co. "Althoughvinyl has historically been linked to the remodeling market, we have seen significant penetration into the new home market in recent years."

According to Hartsfield, 720/o of current vinyl siding sales volume goes into remodeling and 230lo is targeted for new home construction. The remaining 50/o is used for manufactured housing. "l expect that the 3.5 million squares of vinyl siding sold for new home construction in 1988 willdouble within the next five years," he added.

Frost Moves After 67 Years

After 67 years at its present downtown location, Frost Hardwood Lumber Co., San Diego, Ca., is readying to move its headquarters to its nearby Miramar, Ca., mill site.

Frost will consolidate in Miramar at the end of December, giving up the downtown yard to redevelop-

ment. Says v.p. Bruce Frost: "We actually can do more business out of one facility than out of two. We will have our inventory where our customers are and eliminate constant delivery runs between stores."

The new 38,000 sq. ft., two story structure includes 7,000 sq. ft. of of-

fice space, 6000 sq. ft of commercial and retail space and more than 25,000 sq. ft. of product display and storage.

Outside are ample customer parking, a drive-through and pick-up area, will call desk and unloading dock for rail cars.

Wood Window Demand Rising

Almost 700/o of windows used in single family construction and 55% of those in multifamily construction are wood or wood-clad windows.

According to specifiers surveyed by the National Wood Window and Door Association, the increased popularity of wood windows is due to problems they have with all-metal or all-vinyl windows including rust and corrosion, damage from extreme cold. lower manufacturer standards and lower buyer acceptance.

The study also shows that exterior use of wood doors has risen by 9%.

Hollow core wood tlush doors are selected most often for interior use. Solid core wood flush doors, along with molded and simulated panel doors also have shown a significant increase.

"The popularity of wood windows and doors can be attributed to recent advances in wood treatment and wood cladding, among other things," said John Shoemaker, executive v.p., National Wood Window and Door Association

High Lights

Step-flashed roof windows and skylights from Wasco Products combine a natural wood curb with weather resistant vinyl features, such as a gutter to capture and hold condensation from the glass, for durability and weather protection. There are also no weep holes to leak energy or drain poorly.

Screwdriver Challenge

An in-store demonstrator that lets consumers compare Grrip non-slip tipped screwdrivers to conventional tools is now available from RemGrit. The merchandiser consists of a spring-loaded test element and sample conventional and Grrip screwdrivers.

The Excel-10's two-piece construction eliminates disassembly and reassembly of skylight parts. Its wood curb rests completely on the roof deck, reportedly making it easier to install and finish than skylights that are suspended inside the roof opening.

The steel fittings connect flex to boxes in seconds by simply screwing them into the conduit and snapping them into the box locknut. There is no need to deburr the conduit or unscrew and screw on a locknut.

Consumers are instructed to compare the products by inserting them one at a time in the screw head, twisting the screw to achieve resistance and pulling back on the screwdriver while maintaining twisting pressure. An indicator demonstrates the pull-out performance of each tool.

The power behind quality wood

The National Grading Rule for dimension lumber was established nearly two decades ago to standardize softwood grades, sizes, design values, and species groupings. Its homogenous standards have greatly simplified the work of building inspectors, builders, remodelers, and even do-it-yourselfers.

But this was not always the case. In the early 1900s, improved transportation allowed a multitude of regional grades, products, sizes and species to pour into a national distribution system. The resulting product mix was diflicult to follow and stirred the lumber industry to establish order.

By April, 1924, the industry had approved its first set of voluntary product standards with guidance from the Department of Commerce. The voluntary standards are depend-

ent on self-regulation.

That first effort also produced a Central Committee on Lumber Standards, later named the American Lumber Standards Committee (ALSC). Made up of softwood producers, retailers, wholesalers, engineers, architects, consumers, and government agency relpresentatives, it has continually refined the standards to meet changing conditions.

The current and most effective standard is Product Standard 20-70, or simply PS 20-70, in effect since September, 1970. Promulgated by the ALSC, it has produced numerous benefits for softwood lumber users, manufacturers, and related industries.

One of the more far-reaching effects of PS 20-70 is National Grading Rule for dimension lumber under five inches thick. In essence. this

successfully condensed regional grades, sizes and design values to establish universal grade descriptions and names for dimension lumber.

This ensures end users that lumber conforms to clearly stated sizes and grades, regardless of source or manufacturer. Without surrendering product integrity, the rule simplified grading design, specification and use.

The standard set a precedent by defining dry lumber as that with a moisture content (MC) of l9o/o or less, the level at which decay organisms no longer function. Secondly, it was the level most uniformly adopted by various grading agencies. Thislevel was accepted by the Federal Housing Authority and numerous building codes.

The new standard required grade marks to show moisture content at time of surfacing: Surfaced Green

The standard also soecified different minimum dressed sizes for green and dry lumber to compensate for shrinkage of the green lumber. This assures similar sizes whether seasoned or unseasoned lumber is used.

In addition to grades and moisture

content, the standard simplified strength and stiffness values. Studies at the time, which are still valid today, gave a more precise definition of the performance capabilities of lumber for both single species and species combinations. Species groupings such as Hem-Fir originated at this time.

Through PS 20-70 the industry imposed stringent self-regulation by redefining an existing Board of Review. The board, a third-party governing body, approves rules (as conforming to American Lumber Stand-

INDUSTRNT

ards), approves agencies to grade under those rules and monitors grading agency performance, determining if agencies conform with the standard. The board is empowered to revoke a grading agency's certification for not conforming to the standard.

Provisions in PS 20-70 allow the standard to adapt to changing times. Upon ALSC review, and with gen(Corttittucd on nexl ltage)

eral approval of the industry, the standard may be amended to include new technologies or replace outmoded systems.

The current standard has been in effect for nearly two decades. These provisions ensure its continuation as a means of efficient self regulation for the protection of all those who depend on wood products.

American Lumber Standards Committee grade stamps on lumber are like packaging labels that provide information about a product.

Much like the label on a product's carton or box, the ALSC stamp indicates what the lumber is made of, where it came from. its structural limitations, and who determined those uses and limitations. and bv reference what it can be used for.

Grade stamps of ALS approved agencies are standard throughout the U.S. This assures the buyer that grademarked lumber conforms to

universally accepted industry standards. More important, it identifies the lumber as manufactured to the American Lumber Standards system.

The ALSC approved stamp condenses this information in four basic parts. These include: place of manufacture (mill name or-number); species or species combination; appro- priate grade as defined by an ALSC approved rules writing agency; the registered symbol representing the approved ALS grading agency.

Characteristics such as vertical grain, items such as grade rule para-

graphs under which the lumber was graded, or other information may also be indicated. Although not shown on the grade stamp, lumber sizes conforming to ALSC industry standards must be shown on the bill of sale or tally. Moisture content is also commonly shown on most surfaced lumber.

For brevity, codes, symbols and other abbreviations are used on the stamp. Each is specifically defined in the appropriate ALSC agency grading rule book.

Only one Forestry Initiative on the November 6 ballot strikes a balance between environmental, economic and human concerns.

Have you heard about what some environmencal extremists are trying to do to the forest products industry in California?

They are literally trying to run it into the ground. And they don't care if it costs thousands ofCalifornians'jobsperhaps yours.

Earth First!notorious for sabotaging logging equipment and driving spikes into treesis the leading supporter of Proposition 130, a November 6 ballot initiative that California simply cannot afford to support.

Ifthey succeed, Proposition 130the Earth First! Initiativewill: { Put at least 75,000 Californians out of work, including forestry workers, retailers and wholesalers.

{ Reduce timber harvesting by nearly 70%.

{ Dramatically increase consumer piices for lumber, paper products and homes. { Raise taxes by $1.3 billion.

{ Increase the risk of runawav wildfires.

Thaf s why professional foresters, wildlife biologists and forest products industry workers are fighting back with a more rquonable initiative, Proposition 138.

hoposition 138 strikes a balance between the public's demand for forest protection and the need for a dependable, affordable supply of forest products.

Proposition 138the Reasonable Initiativewill:

{ Respect the rights and livelihood of timber and forest product employees and their families to make an honest living.

'rt Keep harvesting practices in the hands of licensed professional foresters and biologists and away from Sacramento politicians and bureaucrats.

{ plant millions of trees throughout California.

{ Expand California's redwood parks by 1,600 acres.

Please take these actions today:

. Contribute financially to the Proposition 138 campaign at the address noted below.

. Register to vote by October 9.

Educate your employees, customers, family and friends about the issues.

. Vote on November 6better yet, vote early by mail.

yeurs, Hoo-Hoo International voted to remain an all male organization. The international lumbermen's fraternal order, during its 98th annual convention voted 630/o in favor of a proposal that would delete the word male from the by-laws, thus opening the door to admitting women members. A 7 5o/o yes vote was required for the motion to pass. Delegates earlier had wrangled over a board proposal to lower from 750/o to 660/o the percentage needed to change the by-laws. The percentage change motion did not pass. Even if it had, the vote in favor of admitting women would still not have had the 660/o required to pass. Current regulations allow local clubs to admit women as associate members.

The twin proposals sparked lengthy, vigorous and at times acrimonious debate among delegates representing members in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The meeting was held Sept. 9-12 in Oakland, Ca.

Four westerners were elected to the top four elective offices of the international organization. The new snark (president) is Brent Crosby, Brent Crosby Enterprises, Walnut Creek, Ca.; lst v.p., JeffLoth, Loth Lumber Co., Gold Bar, Wa.; 2nd v.p., Dave Blasen, Blasen & Blasen, Inc., Portland, Or.; sec-treas., Bernie Barber, Woodwork Institute of California, Fresno, Ca.

The status of California initiative Proposition 138 was reviewed by Kevin Eckery, Timber Association of California. Sponsored by the lumber industry, Prop. 138 is being opposed on the November 6 ballot by two other measures mounted by environmentalists that would have a disastrous effect upon the state's forest industry. Eckery said the three measures - 138, 130 and 128were neck and neck in mid-September polls. He said donations and participation were essential for Prop. 138 to pass. Speaker Roy T. Brophy, a former developer and current chairman of the University of California Board of Regents, said industry must reach the teachers with its message so a balanced presenta-

Help your customer add an outdoor room

t\ ONSUMERS are expected to V spend $40 billion this year on residential additions and alterations, but many of your customers are

probably looking for an inexpensive way to update or enlarge their present home.

"Add a deck" is usually the best advice you can give them for adding the most square feet of living space at the most economical cost. Compared to adding a room, a deck is an excellent buy. It is the most economical way to add extra living space and extra value.

There is no living space more readily adaptable to serving a multitude of changing family needs. All in the course of a single day a deck can serve as a breakfast room, an exercise room, a reading room, a

sun room, a game room, a party room or a pleasant retreat.

Story at a Glane

Ways you can help your customer add space to a cramped house at budget prices and get your share of the $40 billion remodeling market.

The popularity of decks is confirmed by Qualified Remodeler Magazine which rates decks as one of the top five improvements that can be made in remodeling a home. In addition to better living benefits, the homeowner receives an estimated 800/o return on the investment, according to their figures.

llECKS such as these can add living space and a new look to an older home. Simoson Timber Co. in their new TooDeck redwood product line is marketing the most popular redwood decking grades and lumber sizes air seasoned, graded for decking use and available in 2 ft. increments ranging from 8-20 ft.

A deck project often allows a dealer to sell more than decking. Larger windows, French doors, wooden sliders, patio doors, railings, trellis, fencing and building materials such as hardware, nails, stain, paint and tools are needed to complete each project. Finishing touches including outdoor furniture, planters, garden containers, grass, plants and flowers are additional sales.

Dealers with deck design software packages can custom design a deck to fit each customer's special needs, providing plans and material lists. Those without computer design centers can help their customers modify existing deck plans if necessary.

Dealers also can recommend contractors to build decks, provide installation service or assist the do-ityourselfer. All are an incentive for a customer to buy materials.

In many areas there's plenty of time to complete a deck before winter. If not, it's not too early to plan for next spring.

NationalSells Sob Strong Units

Although National Lumber & Supply, Fountain Valley, Ca., has thrown in the towel, holding liquidation sales at l0 of its 12 remaining stores, the company name may not disappear entirely.

Company president Mel Jaffee has purchased one of the chain's healthiest stores, in Cathedral City, Ca., along with non-exclusive rights to use the National Lumber name and exclusive rights to mascots Shorty and Cheap Chicken. The bankruptcy trustee retains the right to sell use of the name to buyers of other vacant locations.

Builders Emporium, Irvine, Ca., purchased the other profitable unit, in Encinitas. Ca.. as well as a vacant store in Southgate, Ca. Jaffee had also tried to buy the Encinitas store, but the sale was snagged by protests from creditors and owners of the site.

Kuwaiti Firm Near Normal

Kuwaiti-owned Western Lumber, National City, Ca., is operating as usual despite a freeze on the country's U.S. assets aimed at preventing Iraq from seizing them.

The U.S. Treasury Department has granted several exemptions, providing the government Iraq has established in Kuwait won't benefit financially from the U.S. firms. "We have no other restrictions than that we are not supposed to transfer assets to the government of Kuwait

or to lraq," said Roger Regelbrugge, president of the four-store chain's parent, Georgetown Industries.

Newell Lavoy, Western Lumber president, was in London to address American and Kuwaiti board members on U.S. operations when hostilities broke out in the Middle East. The meeting was canceled immediately.

Due to Kuwait's policy of low profile business practices estimates of their U.S. investments range from nearly $10 billion to over $50 billion,
