EMODELING expenditures reached more than $100 billion last year with kitchens leading the way as the most remodeled room in a house.
Story at a Glance
Dealers should suggest solid hardwoods for kitchen remodeling. .. beautiful, durable woods please customers. give store a share of growing market.
Although hardwood can be used extensively in remodeling any part of a home, kitchen cabinets, counters and flooring needs can be well satisfied by tough, yet handsome, hardwoods. The Hardwood Manufacturers Association proved this in the 1989 Nashville ( Tn. ) Designer's Show House.
Working with an award winning kitchen designer, they used quantities of hardwood to update the kitchen of a 62 year old home. Solid oak countertops were in- stalled with cherry cabinets. Strip oak flooring was used underfoot and basswood shutters on the windows.
Hardwood can be recommended for the kitchen with confidence today, both the designer and HMA stressed. Solid oak countertops are treated with a special finish that repels everything from glass rings to nail polish remover. Oak strip flooring has a protective finish that resists spills and everyday soil. Hardwood cabinets are both practical and beautiful.
C0UI|TERT0PS are solid oak manufactured with an application ot/ Durakryl 102 to improve the durability characteristics of the wood. The new finish protects solid hardwood countertops from spills and everyday mishaps.

All-Coast Buys Kaibab Denver
Kaibab Industries, Phoenix, Az.. and All-Coast Forest Products, Inc., Chino, Ca., have signed a letter of intent for the sale of Kaibab's Denver, Co., building material distribution center to All-Coast. Details of the transaction were not disclosed. However, they are aiming for a late October closing.
The operation employs 60 people on a 15 acre site in Sheridan, a Denver suburb. Started in 1970, it distributes specialty building products in Colorado and the five state surrounding area.
All-Coast, a privately owned company with sales exceeding $60,000,000, is the largest independent building material distributor in California. Its Chino facility contains extensive remanufacturing capabilities and current plans for Denver involve similar facilities there. Other products and services will be added.
In commenting on the proposed acquisition, Daryl Bond, All-Coast president, said he views Denver as a logical first extension of its geographic reach beyond the West coast. "The Denver trade region has good potential for growth over the next five years and the excellent quality of both the facility and the people will give us a running start to capitalize on this growth."
Kaibab president Bruce Whiting said the Denver division had been consistently profitable over the years but did not fit Kaibab's long-range intent to concentrate on its core business as a lumber producer, metal fabricator and distributor of gasoline and lubricants.
