The forest products industry ranks among the top 10 employers in 40 of the 50 states, directly employing some 1.4 million people with an annual payroll of around $31 billion. This counts only those people directly involved in the industry, not the many thousands more who indirectly make their living from forest management and forest products.
Vinyl Siding Sales Glimb
Vinyl siding for new home construction will continue to increase its share of siding sales because of competitive pricing and specialty profiles.
"During the last two years, vinyl siding has made tremendous inroads into the new home construction market," said Howard E. Hartsfield, national sales and marketing manager of Reynolds Metals Co. "Althoughvinyl has historically been linked to the remodeling market, we have seen significant penetration into the new home market in recent years."
According to Hartsfield, 720/o of current vinyl siding sales volume goes into remodeling and 230lo is targeted for new home construction. The remaining 50/o is used for manufactured housing. "l expect that the 3.5 million squares of vinyl siding sold for new home construction in 1988 willdouble within the next five years," he added.
Frost Moves After 67 Years
After 67 years at its present downtown location, Frost Hardwood Lumber Co., San Diego, Ca., is readying to move its headquarters to its nearby Miramar, Ca., mill site.
Frost will consolidate in Miramar at the end of December, giving up the downtown yard to redevelop- ment. Says v.p. Bruce Frost: "We actually can do more business out of one facility than out of two. We will have our inventory where our customers are and eliminate constant delivery runs between stores."
The new 38,000 sq. ft., two story structure includes 7,000 sq. ft. of of- fice space, 6000 sq. ft of commercial and retail space and more than 25,000 sq. ft. of product display and storage.
Outside are ample customer parking, a drive-through and pick-up area, will call desk and unloading dock for rail cars.
Wood Window Demand Rising
Almost 700/o of windows used in single family construction and 55% of those in multifamily construction are wood or wood-clad windows.
According to specifiers surveyed by the National Wood Window and Door Association, the increased popularity of wood windows is due to problems they have with all-metal or all-vinyl windows including rust and corrosion, damage from extreme cold. lower manufacturer standards and lower buyer acceptance.
The study also shows that exterior use of wood doors has risen by 9%.
Hollow core wood tlush doors are selected most often for interior use. Solid core wood flush doors, along with molded and simulated panel doors also have shown a significant increase.
