Drawer 4779, Arcata, Ca. 95521 7O7-822-3648 south to join Brush Industrial Lumber, Montebello, Ca. Over the next 20 years he worked for Sand Door and Plywood, Toal Lumber and Brady Hardwood before founding Buchanan Hardwoods in 1981.
John, who has 13 years experience in the hardwood business, purchased Buchanan Hardwood from his father with the help of Sumwood, Inc., Palos Verdes, Ca. Combining the domestic stock of Buchanan with Sumwoods' imported hardwoods, the two companies stock hard to find items along with a wide selection of Asian, African and Central/South American hardwoods. Both sell only to wholesalers.
Buchanan will continue to represent Holmes & Co., Columbia City, In., and Robinson Lumber Co., New Orleans, La., in selling domestic woods.
John will supervise the Long Beach operation assisted by Brenda Sanfilippo and Doug and Mike Reynolds. Jack Buchanan will sell part time for both companies. Jim Summerlin and Betty Jeniye handle direct import inquiries at the Palos Verdes ofl'ice of Sumwood.
Short timber supply hurts housing
Poorly managed timber resources will result in the loss of affordable housing for more than 650,000 families over the next decade.
Lawrence C. Hart, chairman and president of Fibreboard Corp., Concord, Ca., representing the American Forest Resource Alliance, told the Federal Advisory Commission on Regulatory Barriers to Affordable Housing meeting in San Francisco, Ca., Sept. 2: "lt's not that the U.S. is running out of timber. The opposite is true - each year we grow more than we harvest - some 3lo/o more. Yet, under the specter of environmental litigation over spotted owls, national forest planning and old growth harvesting, the volume of timber available for sale has been reduced to a trickle. Through better management of the natural resources under its care, the federal government and its regulatory agency, the U.S. Forest Service, can create a stable supply of timber."
Hart continued, "Since wood is the major material used in construction of new homes and in remodeling of existing homes, the cost of wood products plays an important role in the affordability equation. As many as 65,600 families will be priced out of the housing market annually as a result of increases in the cost of wood products."
Hart emphasized that while regulations should respect environmental needs, they should also be balanced with, and not determined at the expense of, people and their communities. He said, "l do not want to suggest that current federal policies, such as the Endangered Species Act, fail to play a useful, indeed very important, role in protecting the environment. However, the commission could and should address the need for a more sensitive implementation of this act by considering the economic plight of affected communities and the nation's need for affordable housing, while also protecting the spotted owl."
"The decline in available timber in the Pacific Northwest alone has seriously reduced the number of new homes built. The region supplies more than one-third of all lumber produced in the U.S., which could build more than 270,000 homes with the volume of wood withdrawn from renewable timber management last year. Pending proposals for more nouse forests would remove enough wood to build millions of homes."
Addressing industry concerns regarding three initiatives scheduled for the November ballot in California, he said, "All three of the propositions facing the voters will reduce timber harvesting in the state, either to a large or lesser degree. Of the three, Proposition 138
(Californians for New Foresty) is by far the most reasonable, but it will still have some impact."
Hart also cited the l5 years of administrative and legal delays in implementing the National Forest Management Act (NFMA) of 1976 which have seriously reduced the timber supply. Hart and 169 industry, labor and community groups are strongly supporting pending legislation (5.2762 and H.R.5094) which will allow the NFMA forest plans to be implemented and result in the harvesting of more timber.
