Don't poop out in midstream

llt E THINK it's great that the hardwood inUU dustry has begun in recent years to overcome its ingrained conservatism and really get serious about promoting hardwood and hardwood products, But we worry that the enthusiasm and support for the various promotions will fade before the job gets done. It has happened too often before in many areas of wood products.

Today, various associations and trade groups, bolstered by individual companies, have created hang tags, videos and designer showcases, placed stories in major consumer magazines, advertised in trade journals and hit the road telling the story by tv and radio. In fact, the new Hardwood Institute campaign using CNN Headline News and Turner Broadcasting System has increased its number of television spots from 168 to l9l.

These are exciting programs and they rightly have been well received by clear thinking industry members. But the problem is not today or

next year. Inevitably it comes later when these promotions have not solved every little industry complaint and problem. Unrealistic expectations often kill campaigns prematurely. Effective campaigns take time and are by nature intangibles. No one can absolutely quantify their results or the lack thereof.

While getting people's attention is both difficult and expensive, no one seriously can claim that advertising and public relations don't work. They do work, but the results don't always satisfy the bean counters. You know promotions work, but you can't always account for every last nickel.

We appeal to those who control the purse strings to be farsighted enough to allow these promotions plenty of time to work. Because when today's campaign concludes they need to follow it with yet another. When the investment lessens, results drop, endangering the whole effort. Don't let that happen. It's too important to every member of the hardwood industry.

tr HE REASONS may change, but I rumors that there is a hardwood shortage persist. Gypsy moths, poor forestry management, exPorts and preservationists share the blame in attempts to explain high prices and spot shortages.

There's not much basis for any of the rumors according to some hardwood experts. James L. Gundy, executive vice president of the Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers Inc., says that the U.S. has a greater volume of hardwood trees than at any time in the last 50 years and is growing twice as much as is being harvested annually.

"Growth is assured in the mountains through natural regeneration," he explains. "With management of these stands in Appalachia, Prime species will provide future generations with ample supplies of superior red and white oak, ash, maPle, walnut, cherry, poplar, beech and birch."

The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that about 11.5 billion board feet of hardwood lumber was produced last year, up from I l.l billion in 1987 and l0 billion in 1986. Growth, on the other hand, has been estimated at more than 25 billion board feet each year since 1985 and is escalating each year.

Lumbermen point out that hardwoods in the mountains grow back naturally when the forest floor is exposed to light and moisture as old growths of mature trees are removed. As many as 50 to 60 thousand shoots per acre come out in the Year following a harvest. Those new seedlings that are not eaten or damaged by wildlife are thinned after further growth. Dominant species then take over and the weaker or less shade tolerant trees recede or die out.

According to Robert Joslin, deputy director, timber management staff, USDA Forest Service, "The nation's appetite for forest products is increasing, and for the most part

Story at a Glance

HARDWOOD SHORTAGES: myth or reality?

the U.S. is self-reliant in supplying them."

Citing as an example the one billion board feet of hardwood lumber, about l0o/o of the U.S. hardwood lumber production, used in kitchen cabinet manufacturing each year, he explained that net growth of all hardwood growing stock is nearly double removals. "However," he added, "for larger sized sawtimber of preferred species, such as white oak, sweetgum, yellow birch, hard maPle, walnut and black cherry, removals have been close to or above net annual growth in recent decades."

Several other hardwood species such as aspen, soft maple and yellow poplar are very abundant and present an excellent opportunity for increased utilization, Joslin points out.

According to Gundy, the most pressing problem is the resource base. "Obstructionists would stop all tree harvesting. Organizations making a serious effort to limit harvesting include The Wilderness Society, Friends of the Earth, The Sierra Club, The Audubon Society and regional activist groups that espouse non-use of our forest resources," he said.

The Appalachian association lists the education of the Public, legislators and consumers about the resource, how much exists, who owns it, and what management techniques best insure its continued health and welfare as its most important task.

The issue of the red-cockaded woodpecker appears to have minimal impact on hardwood timber Production and supply at present, according to Elizabeth M. Pease. director of communications at the National Hardwood Lumber Association in Memphis, Tn. She explains this bird does not nest in hardwood trees and most of the land in the southeast is privately held. However, she qualifies her statement by adding that if

the woodpecker were to be listed as an endangered species there could conceivably be a problem for the hardwood industry. In order to maintain nests, which require Pine cover, many hardwood trees would have to be eliminated, thus upsetting the natural ecology of the forest.

The latest Resources Planning Act Assessment projects domestic hardwood sawtimber consumPtion growing over a third bY 2030 with total consumption of hardwoods increasing nearly two-thirds. Hardwood lumber prices are projected to rise at an average annual rate (net of inflation) ofjust over l% Per Year. The increases will probably be largest for high quality sawtimber of preferred species and products made from this timber. Hardwood inventories will continue to grow in the north, the report says, but are projected to gradually decline in the south after the year 2000 due to maturing of stands and shifts to softwood types.

In an effort to use small diameter, low quality hardwoods, research has developed waferboard. This uses smaller diameter trees as well as soft hardwoods such as aspen. Lab research studies show that wood composites combining wood fibers with plastic mesh have potential application in products such as kitchen cabinets, Joslin pointed out. This combination produces a material that can be molded. It is considered strong and resistant to dents and adverse effects of cleaning fluids. Other studies indicate that lower grades of hardwood lumber can be used successfully in kitchen cabinets.

In summary, it appears that hardwood is plentiful although spot shortages may appear due to weather restricting cutting or unusually high demand for certain species. Education of the public and utilization of lower quality species will help to keep supplies plentiful in the years to come.

It's hardwood quality, not price, that sells

1r ODAY'S retailers are torn between I corporate strategies and consumer wants. While giant retailers are waging a price war, their consumers are seeking more quality for their dollar. In other words, a better value not just the lowest price. Nowhere is this more true than in the hardwood do-it-yourself retail board and moulding market.

In a study made in 1987 by Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blackburg, Va., the retail hardwood market was predicted to grow l44o/o over five years. Actual experience is showing this number to be conservative. Red oak is the leading species, followed by yellow

poplar, hard maple and mahogany. Weyerhaeuser's hardwood sales are 420/n red oak,280/o poplar, 120/o hard maple, 100/o mahogany, 8o/o cherry, ash, alder, walnut. A major conclusion of the research study was that consumers purchase hardwood based on quality rather than price, although this has not been the nature of the sales effort throughout the years.

The retail market for hardwood has gone through a major evolution over the past several years. At first, random width, random length lumber was purchased in truckload quantities. This lumber, hardly ever advertised, was stored

in the back of an outside lumber shed. The hardwood was graded by National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) rules, which were designed in 1897 by hardwood producers. The cutting rule method certainly was not designed with the retail customer in mind. In an attempt to increase sales and make it easier to stock hardwoods, the retailers switched to a series of fixed width, random length boards.

The grade was still a product of NHLA rules. Split, cup, warp, sidebend, honeycomb, mineral, moisture problems and poor surfacing were allowable because the consumer would simply cut around them. The retailers were narrowly defining their market to consumers who owned sophisticated woodworking equipment. Furthermore, they assumed the woodworker found enjoyment working around these defects rather than creating their projects. The savvy woodworker was realizing that the lowest priced hardwood board wasn't such a great value when he threw halfof it away, couldn't get the cuts he needed, used tons ofsandpaper or had his "work of art" split or warp after completion.

Some retailers decided to upgradebut to what? The concept of "clear one face" fixed width hardwood came into play. At the same time retailers moved the boards out of the shed and leaned them up against a wall in the back of the store. Soon they found a tangled mess of boards because consumers were very selective when purchasing hardwood.

If there were l0 boards o[ the same size displayed, the consumer would look at all l0 and purchase the best one. Through this process all of the defect boards, or just ugly ones, would remain in the rack. Suddenly all the boards on display were of poor quality. At this

point, many retailers discontinued hardwoods due to quality image. They simply were trying to buy price and sell quality. The consumer went elsewhere.

In 1984 a small company in Titusville. Pa.. called Redi-To-Use Hardwoods had a radical idea. Sell retailers a defect free piece ofhardwood. They provided a free hardwood merchandiser along with point of purchase literature for the consumer. The store didn't have to hold inventory in the back, since they could buy exactly what they needed by the piece, not truckload. Delivery was direct to the store, freeing up distribution center space and middleman markups.

Story at a Glance

How and why the sales of hardwood boards havechanged over the years. .d-i-y customers react positively to a higher priced and higher quality hardwood product.

The merchandiser was attractive and shopable. The hardwood had gone from the back of an outside shed to the front of the store displaying a quality image in retailing. An interesting phenomenon occurred. Retail sales skyrocketed even with high retail price and more important high retailer margins. The stores found that hardwood could be an impulse purchase. Not only that, but the hardwood project purchase was accompanied by tools, stains, brushes, sandpaper, bits, fasteners, etc.

The list of retailers stocking the clear hardwood program is impressive. Builders Square, Home Depot, Lowe's, Channel, Grossman's and Home Quarters, to name just a few. Along with these major chains, thousands of independents sell the product.

Of course not everyone has learned the lesson from this evolutionary history. Many cling to substandard products at low invoice prices.

Retailers stocking the clear hardwood don't mind their competition's attitude. The clear product is selling at three to four times higher volume with great margins. And at their stores, the consumer is king.

Western hardwoods: a growing force

?

HE desirability of western hardI woods for a variety of wood product applications has perpetuated a supply problem that continues to challenge the western hardwood industry.

For years western alder has been the crown prince of western hardwoods, but with demand for alder exceeding the current restricted log supply, other western hardwoods are making their way into the royal family.

Those woods, primarily Pacific Coast maple, Oregon white oak, California black oak, tanoak, madrone and chinkapin, all feature unique characteristics suitable for machining and pallet and paper products manufacturing.

Dick Lambert of Lane-StantonVance Lumber Company, City of Industry, Ca., estimates 90 to 960/o of his current western hardwood business is in alder.

"Alder is definitely the big vol-

ume item that we know today," says Lambert. "We move l0 to l2 loads per month for furniture frames, table manufacturing and millwork items. "

great. As far as we're concerned, it's an ideal wood."

Miller's company substitutes alder for cherry, maple and birch in early American and traditional style furniture.

Alder's workability characteristics are due to it being one of the "softer" hardwoods. Its consistent, light straight grain makes it easily finished to look like many other, more-diffi cult-to-mill hardwoods.

Calvin Miller, who operates Thunderbird Furniture in Scottsdale, Az., explains why he's "in love with alder."

"lt's very workable, it's easy to mill and it's easy to turn. Plus, its gluing and color characteristics are

Strict grading standards and the availability of alder veneer have added to the wood's desirability for manufacturing a large variety of products, ranging from exposed wood furniture to upholstered furniture frames, from cabinets to toilet seats, and even chopsticks.

It's estimated that Northwest forests currently hold 22 billion board feet of merchantable alder.

A hardwood flooring inventory solution

A PECIAL ORDER. That's the ! who wants to compete with specialists in his area without the

solution for a dealer the hardwood floor problems of maintaining large inventories.

The hardwood floor market is worth pursuing. Hardwood as the flooring of choice is rapidly coming out of the slump that followed the peak year of 1955. Sales figures have doubled since 1982 with indications that they will be even stronger in the '90s.

lmproved products and increased consumer awareness of quality are driving the demand for hardwood floors in both new construction and remodeling. The narrowing of the price gap between carpeting and hardwood floors which last the life of the house is a contributing factor.

Retailers who want to commit to the hardwood floor business without maintaining large inventories can take advantage of special order programs offered by manufacturers and distributors. Customers make their selection from in depth displays and the dealer delivers with the support of his distributor.

This enables the dealer to offer strip, plank and parquet styles in a variety of colors, finishes and price points. Customers responding to advertisements for low end products will often upgrade to higher end flooring when they are able to see and compare all the products.

In discussing home centers involved with special orders for flooring, Jerry Sporich, d-i-y product manager at Bruce Hardwood Floors in Dallas, Tx.. commented, "There's a trend with our more mobile society to want to see a larger range of products. They see products at commercial installations, friend's houses and vacation spots and they're interested in having them in their own homes. More and more home centers and building product retailers are seeing this and asking to get involved in merchandising that will enable them to take advantage of what's happening at the consumer level."

With next day or almost next day delivery possible for the majority of his sales, the dealer can stock an adequate inventory of carry-home, do-it-yourself flooring plus adhesives, tools and accessories including cleaners and maintenance products. These will satisfy the customers who want their purchase immediately as well as those needing support items.

Are hardwood dimension the domestic market?

exports hurting

11 R E exports of hardwood dimen-

sion products hurting the domestic market? Are they creating shortages and inflating prices?

Negative thinkers in the industry love to blame increasing exports for the woes of their businesses, but it's not so, says Steven V. Losser, executive director of the National Dimension Manufacturers Association. Marietta. Ga. Losser and his association members are working hard to build exports by attending European trade fairs and participating in Hardwood Export Trade Council activities.

Dimension products are gaining popularity abroad because it costs much less to ship dimension products than rough lumber and logs, Losser explains. Dimension buyers also have to dispose of less waste,

sometimes no waste, from dimension products.

Statistics show that their work is paying off. In 1988 hardwood dimension exports increased 510/o to $79.7 million. This figure includes exports of various dimension products such as cut-to-size blanks, solid and laminated squares, flooring, edge-glued panels, machined furniture parts and kitchen cabinet doors and parts. Also specialty items like musical instrument parts and picture frames. All are part of a $l billion total hardwood product export figure.

The top 10 markets for U.S. hardwood products in 1988 were Japan, Canada, West Germany, Taiwan, the united Kingdom, Italy, Belgium, Mexico, Spain and The Netherlands.

What ls Hardwood Dimension? Who Buys lt?

Hardwood dimension encompasses a wide assortment of machined parts ranging from edge-glued panels and cut-to-size blanks to fully machined component parts lor use by furniture, cabinet and other wood product manufacturers. Wood turnings of all shapes and sizes can be made to specifications.

Most hardwood dimension goes to a manufacturer to become part of another product. A small part is used as architectural millwork, interior trim and moulding, flooring, stair case parts, fireplace mantels and such. This market is expected to continue to increase as the home improvement market become more important.

The furniture industry is the hardwood dimension market's largest customer. Cabinet manu-

However, they concede that the trade gap in furniture remained high at more than $3 billion. Wood furniture accounted for 570/o of the total import. Imports from Taiwan declined while those from Canada, Mexico and Thailand increased.

facturers, decorative wood manufacturers and architectural millwork houses are other important customers.

Very little hardwood dimension is sold to the d-i-yer. Weyerhaeuser with the ChoiceWood program is the first company to actively pursue this market segment. They are packaging classic and premium hardwood with knots, checks, skip and warp removed. Labeled 100% usable, the hardwood has no waste or scrap and is blemish free and dimensionally stable.

The line offers S4S, precision cut in six widths and five lengths as well as accurately milled mouldings and shelf edges. Project plans for the home woodworker are part of the marketing package.

Losser maintains that exports have a stabilizing effect on the dimension market, preventing an oversupply. "Exports help in rounding out production cycles," he explains, "avoiding ups and downs, creating steadiness."

When asked what would happen if the exports of hardwood dimension ceased, he pointed out that without exports, there would be a severe oversupply of hardwood dimension. This would lower domestic prices, he said, resulting in producers going out of business. "The cost of overhead keeps increasing," Losser said. "Machinery expenses and costs of employee benefits such as health insurance keep going up."

The only negative to exports, Losser maintains, is some spot shortages, primarily in ash, cherry, red oak and certain other select species, but this is only temporary and offset by the many advantages of hardwood dimension exports.

The chart's strength category pertains to the wood's compressive strength endwise. Stiffness is critical in determining the strength of a long

column. Hardness values measure scuff resistance and the ability to withstand nicks and scars. Good grades in shock resistance refer to the ability to endure heavier

suddenly-applied loads, while high marks in bending are necessary for traverse bending.

A good rating in shrinkage denotes a small volumetric loss in the wood during seasoning. Durability tracks the natural ability to resist decay when in contact with the ground or in indoor situations of high moisture condensation.

The other categories rate how well each hardwood works on machines, resists splitting from nails and screws, holds fasteners, and glues.

American Hardwood celebrates its 75th birthday

E. E. and his oldest son, Charles, were touring the west coast of the United States and Canada, calling on potential customers for their Memphis, Tn., sawmill operation when they learned of the outbreak of World War I. Taenzer & Co. had recently shipped 250,000 bf of hardwood lumber to Belgium that was confiscated by the German army and it seemed unlikely that any of it would be paid for. Taenzer decided to divest himself of his timberlands and sawmill operations in the Mississippi Valley in order to take advantage of the growth he foresaw in the west. He set up a brokerage operation in Los Angeles and, soon after, a hardwood distribution yard.

Charles and his brother. Milton. assumed control of American in 1929 after the death of E. E. The depression hit, but, with attention to quality and service, they guided the company through that time.

The growth of Los Angeles following World War II provided fantastic opportunities for the company. Not only was the construction indus-

try booming, Los Angeles was becoming an industrial center.

At the zenith of American's operations, a devastating warehouse fire in 1956 could have dashed the dreams of the family, but, undaunted, they rebuilt the warehouses and mill, restocked the inventory and moved on.

William C. Moore, who recently retired from the company, is credited with being primarily responsible for American Hardwood going back into business after the fire. Much of the

success of the company from 1956 on is said to be due to his leadership and hardwood knowledge. Beginning his career at American in the sales department, he eventually became president. Moore's commitment to integrity and reliability had been taught to him by family members.

The ability to rebuild from the fire would not have been possible without the help of friends in the industry, a company spokesman recalls. Atlas Lumber Co. agreed to unload cars and sectioned off some property for American's use. Many of the wholesalers allowed American to sell from their inventories until the company could get back on its feet again.

llY TRAVELS in the Northwest

lUlrecently took me into a number of lumber and building material retailers that had a common omission. Lumber was no where in sight. When I reached my office I searched out a column that I wrote in January 1981. It's worth repeating!

I can walk into any discount house or local hardware store and find paint, hardware, tools, electrical and plumbing needs and lots more. The one thing they don't feature (not yet anyway) is lumber. So how come when I visit some home centers the only visual merchandising I'm exposed to are the same product categories I can buy in the discount house and local hardware store?

A common characteristic I find in my work with independent home centers and building material dealers is that their showroom is totally void of the one thing

show a stick on the floor. Some position it across the back of the store area to give them easy access to the warehouse inventory. That's a symptom of a retailer being more operations oriented rather than sales oriented.

All of the marketing programs we develop for dealers who are out to capture more of the big ticket d-i-y business contain the following recommendations:

Bring the lumberyard atmosphere insidel Let'em smell it. Display lumber up front and make it self-selection. Let the customer see lumber the minute he's inside the front door.

If the showroom is 10,000 square feet or more consider splitting the center aisle with lumber and building materials on the left or right running the full length ofthe store from front to back. Allow for wide aisles and provide lumbercarts permitting the customer to serve himself and wheel the cart to a

check-out counter. Stock the racks and shelves with studs, boards, plywood sheets, banks of paneling, moulding, insulation, even "take-with" millwork. The giant home centers let their customers load prehung doors, combination doors, windows and kitchen cabinets and other millwork on flatbed shopping carts. They keep sales help available to answer questions and solve problems but also make it easy for the di-y to self-select if he wishes.

Where space does not allow you to inventory on the sales floor it's important to let the customers know what is in the warehouse and in the yard. Do it with signs and/or sampleboards, Let 'em know about the roofing, siding, plasterboard and timbers.

Big showroom or small, every retail floor should "sell" the end product that their lumber and building materials create, the family room, dormer, fence, garage, shed, porch, deck. Let pictures tell the story. Use photos from shelter magazines or manufacturer's spec sheets mounted on walls, columns and behind the lumber desk. Try merchandising and promoting "packages." They're profitable and relatively non-competitive. And, while they may not actually sell as "packages," their

I I OVEMBER 8-l I is the date for the lI :qth Annual Management Conference of the Lumber Association of Southern California.

The site will be the Marquis Hotel on Indian Ave., one block from Palm Canyon Drive, in Palm Springs. It's close to many of the fine eating establishments, including the restaurant in the hotel, and not very far from any number of enjoyable activities that can be found only in the desert in the fall.

Registrations are already coming in at a good rate. Those members who haven't made their hotel reservations or registered with the association office best do it now.

The theme for this year's conference is "Be A Leader In The NinetiesNot A Follower." To be a leader, you need to position your business properly in the market place. To learn how, be on hand for our keynote speaker, Paul Koenigs-

berg, a senior vice president of Management Horizons, a division of Price Waterhouse. He has had considerable experience working with retail and wholesale distribution firms, assisting them in their market position.

Noel Crisp, who has had considerable consulting experience with retail lumber distribution firms in California, speaks as a lead in to Koenigsberg's presentation. Thursday is the day. Be there to hear it all.

A panel of experienced lumber distributors will discuss "Success, Failure and Luck or How I Have Kept It All Together For The Last 30 Years." This has been an extremely popular panel for the last two years. So here it is again, with new players.

The 2nd Growth Panel is being assembled and organized by the president, Drew Sasser of Buena Park Lumber. He is certain to get the cream of the crop. No one dares to say "no" to him.

Bruce Givner, an attorney, will tell how to transfer the family business and

stay within the confines of the tax laws. Tax law can be intimidating to the average person, but you can get a better understanding of how it affects your business transfers by being at this important session. Laws affecting the relationship between the owner and employees will also be discussed. This is great stuff. Plan to attend.

The Friday lunch speaker will be Gil Hamblett, who has spoken to thousands about "Don't Take Yourself Too Seriously And Enjoy Business More." This gentleman is funny, interesting and informative.

The social schedule includes golf, tennis, cocktail receptions, dinner and dancing, plus meeting some wonderful people and enjoying old friends.

Some members of Lumber Merchants Association of Northern California will be joining us this year. They will be concluding an Owner's Conference at the Wyndham Hotel in Palm Springs just as we begin. As part of an effort for the two associations to do more together, they are planning to participate in our activities. lt will be a great new experience for all.

The 39th Annual Management Conference will be outstanding. As a member of Lumber Association of Southern California, you should be there. Get your reservation in now and we will see you at the Marquis Hotel, November 8, 9, l0 and 11.

How to get more mileage from your CedarPrci Sidifu .

edarPro@ is the number one Knotty Cedar siding because CedarPro performs. Vith consistent qudity from unit to unit. Outstanding decay resistance and dimensional stability Superior acceptance of stain and paint. And a natural beauty that can last a lifetime when it's treated correctly Here's how to build yourself a classic.

Do what comes naturally.

CedarPro Siding is precision manufactured from natural Incense Cedar, and needs to "breathe." Even though it has been properly kiln-dried for its intended application, CedarPro Siding will still gain and lose a bit of moisrure as it adapts to job-site conditions. For top performance, pre-condition your CedarPro Siding, Stack it evenly, with air space between layers. And allow it to rest on-site in a coveredareafor seven to ten days before you install it.

Once your CedarPro Siding has settled-in, minimize future changes by pre-sealing sides, edges, and ends of each length prior to installation. If you'll be painting the finished installation, use a moisture-resistant sealer.

Allow some room to move.

Changes in humidity will cause all wood products, including CedarPro Siding, to expand and contract. If courses are butted together or improperly nailed, these natural changes can cause cracking or loosening of individual lengths. So be on the safe side. Make sure the subsurface is properly spaced, allow the proper expansion clearance between courses, and don't over-nail

CedarPro Siding.

Finish clean and fast. CedarPro Incense Cedar Siding readily acceprs paint and stain. For a classic job, stain or paint CedarPro Siding before it is installed.

Carefully touch-up butt ioints and other exposed ends with sealer and stain. Use a brush to work the finish into tight spaces. Seal-out moisture by caulking the joints around windows and doors with an acrylic or butyl compound.

If your plans call for paintingafter installation, do it as soon as possible to preclude weathering of the wood. If there's a lengthy delay between installation and finishing, be sure to clean your CedarPro Siding using a high-pressure warerwasher, and allow it to dry completely before applying the finish. Always be certain to read and follow the manufacturer's directions for applying primer and paint. For a frst-place finish, apply a coat of high-quality oil-based, stain-blocking primer to seal-in the siding's natural extracts. Then, as soon as the primer has dried, finish with a high-qudity acrylic latex exterior house paint. A brush application will produce better results than a spray or roller application. For proper adhesion, ^pply the top coat within rwo weeks of the first finish coat.

Get into high gear.

Our "Guide to Installation and Finishing" will give you the inside track on getting top performance from CedarPro Siding. For your copy, or to test-drive the complete

OPERATING OPPORTUNITIES

I T USED to be the sticks you bought I became more valuable the longer you had them in your inventory.

Maybe that will be true again someday, but it's doubtful. It will always be hard to make money with unsold lumber, no matter when you have it.

A carload of cedar that will fill demand for the next three years is a profit disaster regardless of its value appreciation. Being a big buyer without big sales is nuts, whether you own the wood outright or not. Inventory is a problem when you don't have it and a profit destroyer when you have too much.

There are numerous examples of inventory concern turned to action.

Honda Motors in Japan is supposedly now turning its inventory 150 times a year. They take inventory during every shift, ask for and get deliveries of raw materials l0 to l2 times daily.

A major chain in this country asks for (and gets within 106 of its unit orders) delivery of mattresses within 30 working hours of order placement with 90 day dating.

A dinette manulacturer produces 10,000 SKU's and turns its inventory l0 tlmes a year.

The growth experienced by structured wholesalers for the past several years indicates the same awareness on the part of many building materials dealers.

You can't sell anything for more than a customer will give you for it. lt doesn't matter how much you have in stock or

what you perceive its value to be.

Any idiot can buy, but it takes a merchant to sell. Inventory problems don't occur with the products and items that are counted and evaluated each week, or at other review periods, but with the stulf that you don't need. We all know the culprits. The plan to sell never existed, didn't work, or was not triggered.

Some of us go off to trade shows without our computers and ask what's new instead of what sells. Then we buy what we think we remember we need instead of what the customers tell us they want. Everyone has special order goods as old as the company.

Nineteen hammers, six deep, is another "no gooder" everyone has. The point is that when what we have doesn't move, we aren't geared to get it out of the system. We ignore it and re-order what sells until we choke on what customers don't take from us.

If you buy the theory that 20% of your items do 800/o of your business, and you should, then recognize something. Your problems are going to be with 80% of your items.

Ignoring a cause never cured a fault. A nonexistent, inept, or unimplemented plan never managed or reduced inventories.

It's your lumber, and guess who's making a meal of it. Wood-boring insects and wood-rotting fungi have invited themselves for a snack.

Timber Gommunities Flex Their Muscle

A year ago August, the seeds of a grass roots revolution were sown in Grants Pass, Or., a small, southwest Oregon timber community.

On a hot August afternoon, more than 1,500 logging trucks from five states journeyed there to participate in the Silver Fire Roundup.

Part celebration, part protest, it drew 10,000 cheering timber industry supporters, all of them mad as hell over preservationist efforts to use the federal court system to block the harvest of about 30 million feet of timber killed by the Silver Fire in I 987.

The convoy to Grants Pass

attracted national media attention. And well it should have. It remains the largest peacetime convoy in American history. At one point, the line of trucks sitting on the shoulder of Interstate 5 North stretched 42 miles. Many drivers sat in 100degree heat for more than five hours, waiting to exit the freeway.

One by one, each truck rolled passed a makeshift stage at the Josephine County Fair Grounds, to be introduced over the public address system, and to receive meal tickets and a complimentary Silver Fire Roundup cap.

There was not a dry eye in the house.

The grass roots uprising that began on that hot August afternoon has spread like wildfire.

There are now organized grass roots groups in more than half of the 202 timber dependent communities in Oregon, Washington, Idaho,

Montana and California. They possess a kind of raw political power the timber industry's association structure could not have imagined in its wildest sweet dreams.

Make no mistake. These groupsthe Oregon Project, Save Our Sawmills, the Yellow Ribbon Coalition, Communities For A Great Northwestface a long, uphill struggle.

In Oregon and Washington, preservationist lawsuits and timber sale appeals currently block the harvest of more than 2.5 billion board feet of national forest timber. The situation is much the same in other western states, where more than 600/o of all forest land is owned by the federal government. In 1988, 650/o of alltimber harvested in the I I western states came from federal forests.

"Preservationists want to stop all timber harvesting on federal forest lands," declares John Kunzman, president of the Sweet Home, Or., chapter of Communities For A Great Oregon, and co-chairman of the newly formed Oregon Lands Coalition.

supply, characterizes the preservationist campaign as "a violation of basic human rights."

"The preservationist strategy is a vicious attack on families," Kuzman declares. "lf we don't get some help from Congress, more than 65,000 timber workers in Oregon and Washington could lose their jobs over the next year. We are in a fight for the very survival of our communities and our families. If we lose this fight, some of America's most productive tree growing land willbe locked up in wilderness areas where timber harvesting is forever forbidden."

The fight is already being waged coast-to-coast. Last month, Atlantabased WTBS, which is owned by Ted Turner, an avowed preservationist, agreed to air a controversial Audubon Society film titled, "Ancient Forests: Rage Over Trees." The film's original sponsor, Strohs Brewing, withdrew its $600,000 sponsorship after being bombarded with letters and telephone calls from timber community grass roots groups in all five Pacific Northwest states.

Although Strohs said it pulled its sponsorship for budget reasons, it is thought the brewer may have received as many as 50,000 letters from timber workers angry about the film's bias. The Audubon Society is one of the plaintiffs in lawsuits currently blocking the harvest of old growth timber from the national forests of Oregon and Washington.

After Strohs pulled its sponsorship, WTBS lined up several new sponsors including the Ford Motor Company, Citicorp, Sears, Discover, Exxon, Hartford Insurance, ITT, New York Life and OMNI Magazine. But by Friday, Sept. 22, two days before the controversial show aired, these sponsors had also withdrawn.

Kunzman, who is one of the spiritual leaders of Oregon's grass roots movement, refused to declare victory over the sponsor pullout.

"Frankly, I don't think we had much to do with it," he said. "We got a tremendous amount of support from the local level, from Strohs distributors, Ford dealers, and the like. We appreciate the fact that these companies share our concern for truth. Preservationists have been lying to the American people for a very long time. I guess it is finally beginning to catch up with them."

WWPA Prediction: 1.4 million housing starts

Housing starts will finish 1989 at 1.4 million units and 1990 with 1.35 million units, Western Wood Products Association members were told at their fall meeting.

Single family units, which use more lumber, will increase their share from 73% this year to 7 3.50/o in 1990. Total softwood consumption should reach 46.6 billion bf in 1989, but drop to 45.2 billion in 1990. Repair and remodeling markets should increase their consumption of the total to 31.40/o in 1989 and 32.10/o in 1 990.

If log supplies are available, the western lumber manufacturing industry will produce 22.57 billion

board feet in 1989 and 22.04 billion board feet in 1990 for the third and fourth highest years in industry history, just under 1987's record 23.9 billion board feet.

"There is a real possibility that lumber demand levels (in 1990), as we know them, could not be met," president H. A. Roberts told the meeting in Tucson, Az., "because legislative and regulatory issues that will [have an] impact [onl federallog supplies are not yet resolved, no attempt has been made to quantify where shortfalls may occur or whether they could be fully offset. Some log shortages have already developed and it is almost certain that

Toal Lumber Co.

shortages next year will cause more mill closures and curtailments."

Possible solutions offered are increased Canadian imports, filling in with lumber from other U.S. producing areas or private timber for the short term or using logs originally intended for export to China.

Processed softwood exports, 3.266 billion bf in 1988, will reach 3.5 billion in 1989 and 3.7 billion in 1990 with 700/o coming from the west. Log exports will drop to 4.1 billion bf (log scale) in 1989, 3.8 billion bf in 1990. Softwood imports from Canada are expected to provide 28.40/o of U.S. consumption.

The board of directors left WWPA's grading service at its present rate of 250 per thousand. They asked that the Wholesaler and Distribution Yard survey be conducted on a biennial basis with results made available to members upon request. Support was voiced for taking a lead role in an $800,000 cross industry Targeted Export Assistance project for Australia.

Discussing quality standards, the board reviewed the procedure and progress of standards writing by the European Economic Community Eurocode Process. They also reviewed a letter to be sent to members and grading service subscribers advising that knot placement for 3x4 and 4x4 structural light lraming will be altered and approved the elimination of the No. I common grade for western red cedar and incense cedar.

Future fall meetings will be held in Monterey, 1990; Seattle, 1991: Coeur d'Alene, 1992, and San Diego, 1993. Spring meetings will be in San Francisco throueh 1993.

L-P To Build in Baja, Mexico

Louisiana-Pacific's western division manager, Joe W. Wheeler, has confirmed a newspaper report concerning L-P's interest in building a manufacturing plant in El Sauzal, just north of Ensenada in Baja California, Mexico.

"Unfortunately, the Los Angeles Times was premature. Many of the specific detailed negotiations for construction of the plant are not complete," Wheeler said. "We also regret that the story appeared before all the division's employees and local

government officials could be notified of the plan, our standard procedure with projects of this nature and magnitude."

He explained that plans currently call for L-P to ship green lumber by barge from the company's port facility on Humboldt Bay in Northern California to the facilities to be built in El Sauzal. In Mexico, the lumber will be air dried and planed, then shipped to lumber markets in Southern California and the Southwest, as well as other plants in Mexico (maquiladoras). Wheeler said the

El Sauzal site could also process lumber from other countries and expand trade with the Pacific Rim.

"This area of Mexico averages only nine inches of rainfall a year, an obvious advantage for a lumber drying operation," he explained.

Wheeler also confirmed the company's tentative plans to build a particleboard plant at the site, using fiber from L-P's planing operations and from nearby maquiladoras and municipalities.

"We're planning this expansion into Mexico for a number of reasons," he said. "lt will allow us to add value to the redwood currently being manufactured by our Northern California mills. And by relying on barge shipments, the new facility will free us from the uncertainties surrounding rail service from California's north coast."

Wheeler said that L-P was invited to participate in the maquiladora program by the Mexican government and that both the company and government officials are excited about the prospects. He said investment in Mexico by U.S. companies was endorsed by California Governor George Deukmejian and the State Chamber of Commerce on a recent mission to Mexico.

"One thing to make clear is that no logs will be exported to the Baja site," Wheeler said. "This project will not export jobs. Instead it will help us maintain employment at our redwood mills in California."

Loggers 1, Audubon SocietY O

Input from those in the forest industry threatening to boycott their product apparently caused Stroh Brewing Co. to drop sponsorship of a National Audubon Society television special.

Although the Detroit, Mi., company denies that contacts by loggers had any impact on their decision to withdraw $600,000 from the project, the forest industry considers the action a victory for their side. The program "Ancient Forests: Rage

Over Trees" ran on cable television in September with a public television run set for later. Actor Paul Newman hosts the show.

Although unconfirmed, rePorts have it that Stroh asked the Audubon Society to make changes in the program "to make it more lavorable

to loggers." When the societY refused, funding was withdrawn. All the other sponsors followed with Exxon Corp., the Michelin GrouP, Ford Motor Co. and the Dean Witter Reynolds Inc. subsidiarY of Sears, Roebuck & Co. cancelling commercials.

Round Top Hardwood Gabinets

Hardwood cabinetry combining clean lines with gently rounded corners on all front edges of doors and drawers is now available from Rutt Custom Kitchens.

Accented by walnut inlays, the book-matched cherry veneers are offered in a choice of hand finishes.

Check Out Back Up

A new system using pressure-sensitive electronic article surveillance labels to both price and protect merchandise has been introduced by Monarch Marking Systems.

Waterproof Wood

Wood*Plus, pressure treated wood said to be termite-proof, rot-proof, water repellent and backed by a 50-year guarantee, is now being distributed by Chesapeake Wood Treating.

Reportedly, a special pressure treatment process dramatically reduces the amount of water absorbed by the wood ( causing it to expand, crack and warp). Annual applications of brush-on water repellents are eliminated.

Panels Plus

A 4' x 9' oriented strand board panel said to go up faster and with greater stability than traditional 4' x 8' panels has been introduced by Blandin Wood Products Co.

D-l-Y Greenhouses

Do-it-yourself greenhouse kits are new from San Antonio Tent & Awning Co.

Ready to assemble kits include revolutionary new filtering fabric

The system includes label printers, labels, hard tags, product marking devices, point-of-sale equipment and monitors to be stationed at exits to alert personnel when unpaid-for merchandise is carried from the store.

Often 4' x 8' panels require patching and splicing when used for wall sheathing, while the new extended length creates one smooth surface. And, unlike with 4' x 8' panels, the grain - and strength - ofthe 4' x 9' panel runs across the panel's short direction.

with a zippered door and grommetted bottom for staking, snaptogether pvc pipe frames and staking pegs.

Six models in three different designs are available.

8-Panel Oak Entry

An eight-panel oak door has been added to Bennett Industries' line of exterior hardwood doors.

The Cambridge door and matching sidelites are constructed of American red oak. Sidelites are highlighted by decorative leaded glass, triple-glazed insulated panels with multi-faceted bevels which produce diamond-like prismatic effects. The

panels are firmly anchored by sturdy zinc or brass caming.

The cores of the stiles and rails of the doors are made of mahogany strips glued and machine joined, reportedly resulting in a stronger, virtually split-proof door.

Western Hardwoods

(Continued from page I2)

Unfortunately, much of it is located in protected riparian (stream side) areas and in contested old-growth federal forest lands. 1988 alder log production was 750 million board feet.

While supplies are sometimes limited, alder's popularity keeps increasing in the pallet and burgeoning pulp and paper industry. "The chip market has been so good, they're taking everything they can get," says Miller. "But so far, we have not had any trouble with our supplier."

In order to get more alder to the wood products manufacturers who can benefit from it most, the Western Hardwood Association (WHA) headquartered in Portland, Or., is pushing for what it calls "species diversification."

The idea, says WHA president Jerry Van Dorn, is to promote the use of other western hardwoods to take the pressure off alder.

According to Jeff Stephens of the California Department of Forestry in Sacramento, tanoak is becoming a preferred species on the West Coast for both Simpson Paper and Loui-

siana Pacific.

Stephens also sees tanoak as having great potential as a sawlog. While pulp remains its biggest use, tanoak is finding its way to the Pacific Rim.

Guy Hall is the president of Cal Oak Products, Inc., Oroville, Ca., a mill that specializes in producing both lumber and finished products from a variety of California hardwood species. He describes tanoak as tougher than oaks with less grain character. On the plus side, he says tanoak is excellent for flooring and structural work. Tanoak comprises 10% of Cal Oak's production.

Cal Oak is owned by Masco, Inc., which recently absorbed Universal Furniture. The purchase of Cal Oak guarantees Masco an uninterrupted supply of western hardwood, chiefly black oak, for its Drexel Heritage, Henry Dawn, Dixie, Beachcraft, Calstyle and Universal lines.

But Hall emphasizes Cal Oak is not captive, and is free to supply its products to anyone. "We're always looking for new buyers."

Black oak is 850/o of Cal Oak's current production. Hall describes the wood in glowing terms. "lt's a more expressive oak and has more figure," says Hall. "lt machines the

best ofall ofthe oaks and is great for fine millwork."

On the negative side, Hall says maximum lumber length is l0 feet, "it's not very straight" and veneer is not available. In addition to small wood products manufacturing, black oak is used by pallet makers.

Hall's operation also mills madrone, which he says is somewhat like cherry and "machines beautifully."

Volume of these hardwoods in California is estimated at 1.9 billion cubic feet for tanoak, 2.5 billion cubic feet for black oak, and 1.5 billion cubic feet for madrone.

Other up-and-coming western hardwoods include chinkapin, which has shown value for the pulp and paper industry, and Pacific Coast maple, which features a highly figured grain and, like alder, can be used in the manufacture of fine furniture, cabinets, veneer, pallets and chips. Oregon white oak, Columbia River ash and aspen also show potential.

Sources for any of the western hardwood species can be found by contacting the Western Hardwood Association at (503) 243-2094. Or writing to them at 133 S.W. 2nd Ave., Suite 450, Portland, Or. 97204.

Ralph Lamon Closes Company

Ending a37 year tenure in the San Francisco, Ca., area, Lamon Lumber Co. closed Oct. I with the retirement of owner Ralph Lamon.

Lamon and his father, Fred Lamon, founded the company in 1952. Both had extensive backgrounds in the industry. Ralph worked with Millington Lumber Co., Coos Bay, Or., and McCloud River Lumber Co. in northern California during vacations from the University of California, Berkeley. After graduation in 1938, he worked for West Fir Lumber Co., Dolbeer Carson Lumber Co., Big Lakes Lumber Co., Willamette Valley Lumber Co., Clark & Wilson Lumber Co., Snellstrom Lumber Co. and Stimson Lumber Co. A move into sales for LamonBonnington, which had been started by his father and Jerry Bonnington in 1936, was interrupted by World War II. Upon his return fro'm service, he worked as a lumber buyer and a salesman before joining his father to found Lamon Lumber.

Fred Lamon, who retired in 1964, attended Colgate and studied forestry at the Biltmore Forestry School in North Carolina and in West Germany's Black Forest. He began his career in the Pacific Northwest and worked for several companies before founding Lamon-Bonnington. He left this firm to start Lamon Lumber Co.

Lamon will continue to play golf in his retirement. He belongs to two golf clubs in Mexico as well as one in Northern California. He also will use his Apple Maclntosh II computer to catalog his personal modern history library.

Bill Freeland, a long time employee at Lamon Lumber, also is retiring with the closing of the company.

success as a promotion can be measured in the increase in the sale of basic lumber items.

Lumber and building materials make up the largest portion of the dollar inventory at the home center. Show these products. Keep 'em uP front. Don't get caught up in jazzy product categories that cloud your market position. Resist the pink fixturing displaying giftware and the Timex watches at the check-out counter. Alice in Wonderland Just Tripped

? WO months ago. grass roots opposition to a I biased Audubon Society television program on the nation's forests caused more than half a dozen blue chip companies to withdraw as sponsors. The flap gained national attention and in the process made people aware for the first time that mindless preservation of our forests is not in anyone's best interest.

It was the first bad press the environmentallists/preservationists had suffered in a long time. We suspect the event is the high water mark for their cause and the beginning of the pendulum's swing back to something approaching sense. Not an end to unquestioning public acceptance of environmental nonsense, but at least a turnaround and an end of the weak beginning of our long industry fight to protect both national and commercial interests from the inevitable harm resulting from locking up the U.S. forests.

The forest products industry has a thin and often amateurish history of telling its story to the public. But finally this is beginning to change as groups of varying involvement press forward to reach the public and let them know what's really happening. Grass roots organizations have appeared spontaneously, mad as hell and determined to fight their David and Goliath battle against well financed forces that seek to eliminate their jobs and break the backs of the communities where they live.

Our side in this fight lacks money and the experience of the opposition in legal and regulation areas and in the critical job of reaching the opinion molders. But in the long haul, we've got something better: plenty of grit and determination to fight the good fight and the reassuring knowledge that the hard facts and the common sense of the issue lay squarely with us.
