Ralph Lamon Closes Company

Ending a37 year tenure in the San Francisco, Ca., area, Lamon Lumber Co. closed Oct. I with the retirement of owner Ralph Lamon.

Lamon and his father, Fred Lamon, founded the company in 1952. Both had extensive backgrounds in the industry. Ralph worked with Millington Lumber Co., Coos Bay, Or., and McCloud River Lumber Co. in northern California during vacations from the University of California, Berkeley. After graduation in 1938, he worked for West Fir Lumber Co., Dolbeer Carson Lumber Co., Big Lakes Lumber Co., Willamette Valley Lumber Co., Clark & Wilson Lumber Co., Snellstrom Lumber Co. and Stimson Lumber Co. A move into sales for LamonBonnington, which had been started by his father and Jerry Bonnington in 1936, was interrupted by World War II. Upon his return fro'm service, he worked as a lumber buyer and a salesman before joining his father to found Lamon Lumber.

Fred Lamon, who retired in 1964, attended Colgate and studied forestry at the Biltmore Forestry School in North Carolina and in West Germany's Black Forest. He began his career in the Pacific Northwest and worked for several companies before founding Lamon-Bonnington. He left this firm to start Lamon Lumber Co.

Lamon will continue to play golf in his retirement. He belongs to two golf clubs in Mexico as well as one in Northern California. He also will use his Apple Maclntosh II computer to catalog his personal modern history library.

Bill Freeland, a long time employee at Lamon Lumber, also is retiring with the closing of the company.

Louisiana-Pacific has completed the first phase of a $70 million modernization project at its Samoa, Ca., operation.

An oxygen delignification system will improve wastewater and air emission control as well as mill productivity. The second phase will be completed next year with a state-ofthe-art chemical recovery boiler unit to replace two existing chemical recovery boilers.
