Be as honest as you can be with your employees in all situations. Let your team know if you are not capable of sharing information because it is confidential. If you don’t know an answer then don’t make one up. It is okay to say you need to research and get back to the employee or the team with an answer.

If you tell your team that you will research and get back to them with an answer, then be sure to follow through by setting a due date and either providing an answer or a status update at that time. Keep a running list of outstanding items that you are working on. Refer to these items in team meetings as appropriate to let the team know that you are still actively working on answers.

Take accountability for the tasks that are assigned to you and your team. If a mistake is made by a team member, hold the team member accountable, but also think about what you could have done differently as a leader as well. If you are recognized for the work of your team, be sure to share the success and recognize the team’s work in bringing about positive change.
